As the year goes on, however, things begin to change between the two. Can James catch his flower, or is it hopeless for him to try? “Well, I know who the Head Boy is.” Lily raised an eyebrow. “Who is he, Potter?” James gave her a smile. “Me.”
A Plague of Poor Potions

Flea Be-Gone, Anyone?
"It was that bad, though," Lily said. "He did his potion perfectly. And then he asked me if I'd ever give him a chance and I said I wouldn't give him a chance, but if he wasn't so arrogant, and would quit asking me out, and would stop hexing people for the heck of it that I might, and I think I shouldn't have said that because now he probably thinks he's got

Of Potions, Pranks, and Pain
Lily sighed. This had turned out awful. Her mood had gone from wonderful to horrible in a matter of minutes. And what were Emmeline and Marlene going to say when they found out what happened? Lily knew they'd find out. Whether from Remus or from herself, they'd find out. So much for befriending James Potter. He probably hated her now. But that was what she had wanted, right? To get him to hate her as much as she hated him? That's what she used to want. And then she had decided, albeit grudgingly, to befriend him, and it had gone like this. Was she supposed to feel this awful?
"Because you're you, Lily! Because you're you! Because you love your friends, and you love your family! Because you work so hard to maintain your perfect grades! Because you stick up for everything you believe in! Because you don't let the Slytherins get to you! Because it's not just lust! With what you've been saying, I've begun wondering if you're afraid to have someone fall in love with you! But you know what? It's too late. I'm in love with you, Lily," he said, his voice dropping in volume. "I'm in love with you. And it hurts."
James' anger suddenly left him, and he was left walking next to the girl of his dreams feeling lost. "I can't take things like this, Lily," he said. "I've tried for ages, and you've never gone out with me. And I don't think I can take it anymore, because things are just getting worse. I don't like fighting with you, but that seems to be the only way to converse with you anymore. So I don't even think I want to do that."
"Yeah," Lily agreed. Again they lapsed into silence, this time walking towards the school. Lily loved the side of James that she'd seen today- the side of James that took care of his friends, and that loved his parents, and cared for her. She didn't know why the part that cared for her suddenly wasn't obnoxious.
When they reached the common room, Lily turned to James in front of one of the couches. "Thanks, James," she said.
"For what?" he asked.
Wonders of Winter
"Lily, how do you do it?" he wondered aloud.
"Do what?" Lily asked. He's probably wondering how I keep my hair straight or something silly like that.
"Nothing," he muttered, his face burning. After all, he couldn't exactly answer her with a, "turn me into a nervous wreck," could he?
"James, are you okay?" Lily asked. She put a hand to his forehead. He seems sick. He feels warm. "You feel warm. Maybe you've caught something?"
They walked down to the shop, and upon entering, they found the shop was completely covered in pink, frill, and hearts. "This is repulsive," Lily whispered into James's ear.
James chuckled. "Let's at least stay and see if the tea is good," he whispered back.
“No, you don’t know! What do you think Lily has been through? And here you stand, smiling, like the world is okay, when her heart is broken! Just leave her be!”
Lily attends her parents' funeral with the support of Emmeline, Marlene, and James.
