In which we meet Our Heroine
Catherine Macmillan has just graduated Hogwarts and is resigned to the fact that re-reading her favourite novel for the sixteenth time is probably the most exciting thing that will happen to her all summer. However, her prospects for romantic adventure are greatly improved when she is invited by her wealthy, childless neighbours, the Allens, to spend her holiday with them at the wizarding resort of Hidden Springs.
In which Our Heroine forms an expedient acquaintance
Catherine is slightly disappointed that her first week in Hiddden Springs is filled with shopping and grooming instead of intrigue and mystery. But her spirits are lifted when the day before a grand ball, she meets a new friend who is even sillier than she is.
In which Our Heroine meets Our Hero
Catherine attends The Birthday Ball with the Allens and finally meets a young man of consequence, Remus Lupin. She finds Remus's irreverant sense of humour instantly charming and the young man so diverting that she completely forgets her promise to meet up with Isabella.
In which Our Heroine is painfully unobservant
The day following the ball, Catherine meets with Isabella at The Pump-room to discuss the previous night's diversions. Later, the pair is surprised by a chance encounter with two young men they are each intimately connected with, Isabella, perhaps, moreso than Catherine.
