There was no way Malfoy would break her heart any more than he already had. She would make sure of that.
Hermione remembers some memories of a certain old flame of hers.
A Battle Won
Hermione wins the respect of Draco.
Hermione simply replied, “Don’t worry Malfoy. I still hate you…I’m just a bit distracted.”
Narcissa’s eyes narrowed and it was clear she was rummaging through her mind for an appropriate curse for the situation. She parted her mouth slightly – apparently she’d found the right one. Hermione hunched her shoulders in defense and turned her head.
Hermione staggered. He hadn’t uttered the word love to her in all his life and now as he neared death he chose to give it to her. Was it a gift? Was it unlike the disease Draco had now? Hermione would crumble with the weight of it all her life until she disappeared into mere nothingness.
Hermione kneeled in front of him. “I’m sorry Ron,” she said, meaning it with every shred of her being. She was sorry for hurting him and their future. She was sorry for Draco and the future they would never have. Hermione began to cry softly and Ron looked sidewise at her in surprise.
