The golden glow of the street lamp was fractioned, broken down into tiny little stars that fell upon Remus’s face like snow. She found she quite liked the view with her eyes half-closed.

Remus felt as though they were no longer talking about Marrisa. He avoided Emilie’s eyes carefully and quickly finished his glass of water. ‘It’s getting late,’ he said awkwardly. ‘I should probably be heading home.’

‘But you never – you never said –’ Emilie stuttered, stumbling over her own words. He gently cupped her cheek, silencing her by brushing his thumb over her still-parted lips.

Remus’s thumb drew feather-light circles the back of her hand, and then he said, softly, ‘Maybe it’s best if... if we see less of each other. If it makes you unhappy.’

Emilie’s breath caught in her throat, and she swallowed before she replied. ‘I’m happiest when I’m with you.’
