The Compartment of Catastrophe We all know how the story of James and Lily ends, but how did it begin? In their seventh year, can James finally win Lily's heart? This is my interpretation of everyone's favorite romance. (rating and warnings primarily for later chapters) |

Snow and Fighting "...She shouldn't even trust him with a glass of pumpkin juice, really. Never again, Lily decided. James Potter was not responsibe enough to take her fate in his own hands. But he had already done so once, and Lily was still alive..." Hogsmeade Weekend, and the first snow of the year. |

The Inevitable "She felt no release from him, no emancipation from whatever it was that made her keep tolerating, even liking him. Gone was the notion that she would loathe him eternally. Lily couldn’t make an empty promise to herself to hate him any longer, the repent she felt was proof of that. Clearly, something in her was changing. She did not like it, nor did she welcome it, but it was inevitable." In which James is upset, Lily doesn't get quidditch, boys have cooties, revenge is sought, and someone keeps coming to the rescue. |

A Brief Decline of Genius And, though it was a stretch, if Lily was in a good mood, they would have a very light, trifling conversation that might pertain to topics neither of them found any interest in, but a conversation nonetheless. In which Lily can't sleep, Slughorn is disappointed, Sirius is good-looking, and James has freakish abilities. |

Friends With Those Boys “I don’t know, you’re just the kind of person I always imagined would be…well, a swinger who really never settles down throughout his whole life, and lives in one of those hip, fancy London apartments that he can only afford because he has rich parents. And he makes money playing quidditch, but spends it all on really irrational investments, like firewhiskey and really strong cologne and prostitutes.” In which James reveals something unexpected, Sirius pisses himself, and Lily is left on the edge of her seat. |

Sucker Punch “It’s that…it wouldn’t be right,” he told her, trying his very hardest to be rational, but it was torture. It felt so cruel to tell her no when she needed someone as badly as she did, to upright refuse to the breaking girl before him; however, he told himself that everything else was just a catastrophe waiting to happen. In which 'Rinney trips, Sirius quips, and the news is revealed. |

Distraction He glanced nervously back at Lily and saw the resigned look on her face, her chin resting on her hands. It appeared that she was squinting at something, but looking closer, her eyes were merely puffy from last night. She seemed to have made an effort to look put together, her hair pulled neatly back in a ponytail and her uniform crisp. But three pounds of makeup wouldn’t have been able to conceal that she was anything but cool and composed. In which Lily keeps moving, Corinne keeps falling, and apparently, Peter's mum is a bimbo... |

Potions and Persuasion It wasn’t that she didn’t know what it was she wanted. She knew she wanted to turn back time and tell her parents to stay home on Sunday morning. She knew she wanted to stay at Hogwarts during break, and she knew she wanted to be the independent, strong Lily that everyone recognized and remembered. But she also knew that what she needed most was James, and there was no way she was going to tell him that. In which Lily knows what she wants, and it's definitely not Sirius half-naked. |

Weakness "This is what I've been trying to tell you my whole life. ...You’re boring! Ever since you became totally infatuated with this perfect, teacher’s pet, abstinent little bit of skirt, you’re the boringest bloke on the surface of the world! D’you see what I’m getting at, Prongs?" In which decisions are everything, and some people fail to make the right ones. |

Dangerous Games As unexpected as the situation was, Lily couldn’t help but smile to herself. This was James Potter she was lying beside, in his house, on Christmas Eve, in the clothes she was wearing yesterday, not running away. Never in a million years could she have imagined it. In which Lily wakes up, Sirius throws up, and James takes a risk, for once. |

For the Fun of It And this was the girl who had kissed him. This was the girl he had chased unremittingly until she told him she would rather go out with the giant squid, and this was the girl who once despised every last thing about him. But now, Lily Evans was the girl who was sleeping in James’ house and kissing him for reasons he didn’t yet understand. |

Just One Last Time “Oh, very astute, James. My sister evicted me from my own house, the one my parents lived in, so she can sell it, and now here I am, taking out all this stuff that’s been cumulating in my room for the past eighteen years, and I don’t even know what I’m going to do with it. Frankly, there are other things I’d much rather be doing right now on Christmas than this, so yes, I’m angry. Do you happen to have a problem with that?” In which James explores the upside of anger and the downside of fish n' chips. |

Mercy The pain subsided until it was only a throbbing ache all over. Her vision was hazy, but she saw a dark figure walk in front of her, and heard her wand being dropped in the snow. Then she heard the figure’s quick, heavy footsteps grow softer, and everything fell away into a quiet, tired, spinning black. In which Friday the Thirteenth is true to its meaning...mostly. |

Valentine 4Ever It only seemed right to James that he treat Lily to tea at Madame Puddifoot’s for Valentines Day. Although he and the other Marauders used to poke fun at the types of people that went into Madame Puddifoot’s, especially on romantic occasions such as Valentine’s Day, he now felt obligated to do what countless Hogwarts boys had done before and brave the pink, frilly horror scene in the name of love. In which James and Lily finally have a fun, romantic, uninterrupted date...sort of. |

Pressure and Protocol ...Then came her voice, the last one he wanted to hear, all sweet and strong and pretty. He could feel her hand on his back…she had a different touch…warm, soft, and understanding. He did not want to be understood, especially not by her. In which staff freak out, James throws up, Lily talks down, and everything is turned on its side. |

Wasted James was unconscious, lying on his side in the tub, his legs sticking out and one arm hanging listlessly over the edge. His face was white as a ghost and his mouth lolling open, cheek squashed against the sloping side of the bath. Were it not for the slow, faint rise and fall of his chest, Lily might have presumed he was dead. In which Lily, James, and even Sirius and Peter deal with the consequences of the Hospital Wing incident. |

The Full Moon and The Black Lagoon She spent 73 minutes doing unproductive things that day. Showering, eating, using the toilet, and telling Sirius and James to stop bothering her. The remainder of the day was spent on Runes, Charms, Potions, Transfiguration, and making a color-coded list of careers Lily would be qualified for, depending on her N.E.W.T. scores. It wasn’t worth stopping for dinner, but a concerned James smuggled a few sausages and a plate of beans up to Lily in the library, where Madame Pince had unwillingly left her unsupervised past closing time. The ups and downs of the Easter holidays. |

Fear and Loathing “Don’t lie to me, Severus! You’re the only Slytherin at this school who could execute that escape! You stayed out of the action to keep a good reputation, so you could graduate and help You-Know-Who infiltrate the Ministry. You’re clever, knowing you couldn’t win his trust by some silly attack. He’ll just love to have you, won’t he? Cherish you as his own son?” In which blood is shed, more love is declared, and the rules are forgotten. |
