Run-In With a Redhead

Run-In With a Redhead

“Watch where you’re going, you’ll knock someone over if you’re not paying attention!” Meredith Bain chides.

“I can see perfectly well,” you reassure your friend. “Even though I’m toting fifteen books around, but that‘s what I get for being sick for—Oof!”

You miss a step, coming down a staircase. You slam into someone, and books go flying everywhere. You fall forward, luckily catching yourself before your face smacks the ground. The person you’ve run into isn’t quite so lucky.

Body meets stone with a loud thud, and the sound of an inkpot smashing doesn’t exactly make you happy.

Abandoning your many library books, you rush over to help. You reach out a hand to pull the person upright. “I’m really sorry,” you apologize quickly, “I really should’ve been watching where I was going and—” Your face flushes. The victim of your accident is a boy…A very good-looking boy, at that. You bite your lip as you notice that his entire uniform, tie and all, is spattered with large amounts of bluish-black ink. “I can pay for that.”

The boy blinks a few times, looking slightly dazed. “S‘alright, these rags need replacing anyway.” He blinks again, and his eyes focus. He grins, taking your hand and getting up. “Now I’ve a good reason to get new ones. Mum keeps saying they’ll last me another few years, but I really can‘t agree.” He holds up an ink-splattered sleeve to reveal a large hole. “See?”

You smile. “I see. I’m really, really sorry about…” You sigh, eyeing a particularly large ink spot on his shoulder. “Everything.”

“Eh, don’t worry about it. I’m Ron.” He blows fiery red hair out of his face. “Ron Weasley.” He bends down, helping you retrieve your books.

You open your mouth to thank him, but Meredith cuts in.

“Sorry to interrupt, but we’re going to be late for class.”

You give Ron a quick wave, then start walking after Meredith.

She’s waiting anxiously for you, halfway down the hall. “Did you forget we have Snape next?” she asks. “He’ll be furious if we’re late!”

“I know…But it‘s kind of fun watching him freak out, don‘t you think?”

Instead of answering, she rolls her eyes.

“Is that a yes?”

She groans and doesn‘t answer with a yes or a no. “Well, what’re we waiting for? Let’s go!” Meredith sets off at a brisk walk, and you follow her.

“Ron, there you are! I thought you were right behind me but…You’re a complete mess!” a boy with messy black hair exclaims.

“I’ll be fine, Harry.” Ron mutters, dropping a book back into his bag.

“Maybe I can get those ink stains out.” a bushy-haired brunette says.

“It’s okay, Hermione. Really. I need new robes anyway.”

Harry sidles up to Ron and punches him jokingly. “Who was that girl you were talking to?” He grins. “You didn’t run into her on purpose did you?”

“I didn’t run into her, she ran into me!” Ron protests.

Harry grins again. “Look at him, ‘Mione.”

Hermione looks, then laughs suddenly.

“You’ve got—that goofy smile—on your face.” she chokes, between bursts of laughter.

The corner of Ron’s mouth twitches as he tries to look serious. “What smile?”

“You know, the one that comes up every time you think a girl’s hot…That one. The one you had whenever Fleur Delacour was around.” This time, Harry starts laughing.

“Whatever, Harry.” Ron’s ears go pink.

“You know, I think she’s in our House,” Hermione interjects. “You could talk to her…” she adds with a wink.

“But you’d have to know her name first, mate.”

Ron smacks his forehead. “I didn’t even ask! Merlin…I’m so stupid…”

“Don’t just stand there, Ron! Go!” Harry gives his friend a little shove.

You‘re down the next corridor when Ron yells after you, but you’re too far away to hear. “Wait! I don‘t even know your—” Ron sighs, trailing off. “name…”
