DISCLAIMER:: I do NOT own these characters. They belong exclusively to the great J. K. Rowling. The song I used is Don Henley's "Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough." Hermione sat on her bed and faced the wall. It had been five days since she’d last seen Draco, and she knew it was for the best. But that didn’t ease her pain. She heard the door open and a familiar voice call, “’Mione! I’m home, sweetheart!” She conjured up a smile and headed down to greet her husband. Ron Weasley had changed from his days at Hogwarts. They all had. He looked a lot like his father did, and Hermione couldn’t help but wonder if she resembled Mrs. Weasley. Ron looked at her with such love that it hurt her. Wrapping her in his warm embrace, he spun her around. “Oh, how I’ve missed you!” He planted a kiss on her lips. A warm, gentle kiss, not hot and fiery like Draco’s were. ~Stop that! Ron is my husband, not Malfoy! ~ She swallowed against the lump in her throat when she looked into Ron’s bright blue eyes, eyes just bursting with love. Love for her. She couldn’t stand hurting him like she was. She couldn’t stand doing that behind his back. She knew what she had to do. I don’t wanna lose you, I don’t wanna use you Just to have somebody by my side Later on, Ron was sitting on his favorite easy chair, reading the Daily Prophet. Hermione had told him that she had a headache and headed up to bed. She sat at her vanity and looked in the mirror. As she did, she pictured Draco standing behind her, with his hands on her shoulders. She could almost feel his lips on her ear, and hear him whispering the things she longed to hear from him. She knew that she cared for him. Yes, she cared about Ron, no doubt about that. But it wasn’t the same. Ron was, and always would be, a very good friend. He had never exactly swept her off her feet. Yes, he was sweet, and yes he was kind, and yes, he loved her. But she didn’t feel it in her heart. Carefully, she turned the mirror to expose the hidden shelf behind it. She took out a picture. It was one of Draco. She’d taken it while he was sleeping. He’d looked so peaceful, his pale blonde hair draped over his face and his eyes closed. She hadn’t been able to resist just one picture. He probably didn’t even know she had it. But that didn’t matter anymore. Sighing, she put the picture back on the shelf and returned the mirror to its normal position. She was tired of lying, tired of sneaking. But most of all, she was tired of pretending. She didn’t love Ron, not the way he deserved. Tears trickled down her cheeks, but she’d made up her mind. She had to tell him. And I don’t wanna hate you I don’t wanna take you But I don’t wanna be the one to cry Hermione almost missed the owl. If it hadn’t pecked her on the back of her head, she wouldn’t’ve even known it was there. She whirled around and gasped in surprise. It was Draco’s owl! Hands shaking, she took the letter. The owl quickly flew out the window without waiting to see if she opened it or not. She stared at it for a moment, unsure of what she should do. Then, her curiosity got the better of her and she opened the letter. ~My dearest Hermione, ~ I have left. It’s better this way. You can live your life in peace, now. I wish you only happiness. ~Draco~ That don’t really matter to anyone, anymore But like a fool I keep losing my place And I keep seeing you walk through that door Hermione closed her eyes against the tears. She knew that he’d done it for her, to protect her from herself. But she was through with hiding. She had to end this with Ron. She couldn’t let him live believing that she loved him when she didn’t. Not the way he loved her. She loved Draco. With all her heart, she loved Draco. But there’s a danger in loving somebody too much And it’s sad when you know it’s your heart you can’t trust There’s a reason why people don’t stay where they are Baby sometimes love just ain’t enough Ron was dozing when she came down the stairs. Again, she debated her decision. Maybe it would be better if she just forgot about it. After all, he was a Malfoy… Ron snorted in his sleep and disturbed her thoughts. ~No…I have to do this. ~ She dropped to her knees in front of him and shook him gently. “Ron…Ron, dear, there’s something I need to tell you…” Now I could never change you I don’t wanna blame you Baby you don’t have to take the fall Ron held his head in his hands and fought back tears. This couldn’t be happening. This had to be a dream. His life, his world, his everything, was leaving. She didn’t love him. She probably had never loved him. He felt so betrayed. How could she do this to him? Why hadn’t she said something sooner? He looked up at her, words of rage on the tip of his tongue. But one look into her eyes, also filled with tears, and the anger simply melted away. This was hurting her as much as it hurt him. It killed him to see her cry. Ron took a deep breath. “Are you sure this is what you want, Hermione?” A single tear rolled down her cheek before she spoke. “This is what’s best, Ron. For the both of us. I don’t want to hurt you…” “Jesus, Hermione, you already have!” Ron burst before he could control himself. Instantly, her tears spilled out and down her lovely ivory cheeks. Guilt filled him. “God, Hermione, I don’t want to make you cry…” “I know, Ron. It’s not your fault. This is just the way it has to be.” Yes I may have hurt you But I did not desert you Maybe I just wanna have it all It makes a sound like thunder It makes me feel like rain And like a fool who will never see the truth I keep thinking something’s gonna change The next morning, Hermione had finished packing her things. Harry had offered to take her trunks to the Leaky Cauldron for her today, and she’d move in tomorrow. She sat on the bed and fiddled with her wedding band. Such a simple thing, yet it symbolized so much. She sighed and slid it off, as well as her engagement ring. Ron stood at the door. She handed them to him. He hugged her once, then with a *pop* he Disapparated. But there’s a danger in loving somebody too much And it’s sad when you know it’s your heart you can’t trust There’s a reason why people don’t stay where they are Baby sometimes love just ain’t enough She looked up when she heard a *pop*. There, in her bedroom stood Draco Malfoy. And there’s no way home When it’s late at night and you’re all alone Are there things that you wanted to say Do you feel me beside you in your bed There beside you where I used to lay She ran into his arms and cried. Draco wrapped his strong arms around her and held her like he’d never hold her again. “Hermione…oh, Hermione…there’s something I need to ask you…” She looked up at him. His icy blue eyes were filled with love--love like Ron had, but stronger. “Hermione, I love you. But I want you to be happy. If you really love Weasley, “ he struggled to say Ron’s name without insulting him, “then tell me and I’ll never bother you again.” She put her finger to his lips to silence him. Then, she smiled up at him through her tears. “I left him. Ron and I are through.” Draco’s eyes searched hers. Hope filled him; frantically, he grabbed her left hand. There were no rings. He smiled down at her, tears again filling his eyes. He laughed lightly and whirled her around. “Oh, Hermione! I love you!” “I love you too, Draco!” she giggled. And there’s a danger in loving somebody too much And it’s sad when you know it’s your heart they can’t touch. There’s a reason why people don’t stay who they are Cause baby sometimes love just ain’t enough. Baby sometimes love just ain’t enough. From down the hall, Ron watched with a heavy heart. He’d returned to say good-bye. He’d wanted to hold her, to kiss her, one last time. But she was with Malfoy. She’d left him for Malfoy. Ron’s head spun. How could she have done this? Did Harry know? When did she? What had happened to them? For a moment, he wanted to rush in there and beat the living daylights out of that arrogant prat. But then he thought of Hermione. He’d seen how she’d looked at him. She’d never looked at Ron like that. And no matter how much he didn’t want to admit it…it looked as thought Hermione was in love with Malfoy. And there was nothing he could do about it. Or was there?
