Lily’s anger had wrapped so tightly around her she felt she would suffocate. She had curled into a ball in the corner of the Gryffindor common room, unable to stop the rage that welled inside her. She hated him. With every ounce of her being, she hated him. She knew James Potter had redemptive qualities otherwise Remus and Sirius would not be so loyal. But this time, James had done to far. Sending Severus out into the Forbidden Forest on a dare when he knew the full moon had sent Remus on the prowl. Severus’ life was in danger just because James was once again jealous of seeing the two together. Why couldn’t he just grow up? “Lily?” “Sirius?” The torn clothes and bloody trail made Lily rush to his side. “It’s James.” His breath was ragged. Lily’s heart skipped a beat. “He went to try and find Snape.” “Well, if he wouldn’t have…” the dark look in Sirius’ eyes silenced her. “I am not your silly little girlfriend, Lily, and I don’t have time right now to listen to you ridicule James for being arrogant and self-absorbed.” Sirius growled. “He’s my best friend and he’s out there to save a useless git like Snape just because of you. Either help me or live with it on your conscious.” Unable to find a retort, Lily pulled on her coat. “What can I do?” “I can keep Remus occupied.” Sirius whispered as they hurried across the Hogwarts grounds. “But I can’t get James out at the same time. Peter’s disappeared somewhere too.” As they reached the edge of the forest, Sirius could feel Lily shiver beside him. “You aren’t frightened?” “No. It’s not that.” Lily smiled to reassure him. “It’s just James does such irrational things sometimes.” “And you are always rational?” Sirius asked quietly as he led her deeper into the forest. “I seem to recall an evening we had third year…” Lily’s laughter was silenced as she felt Sirius tense beside her. “There.” Sirius pointed toward a dark form stumbling toward them. “Please be Snape. Please don’t be James.” Lily’s voice was a whisper. She didn’t even care if Sirius could hear her. As long as James wasn’t hurt… “It’s James.” Sirius’ said with certainty. “Get him back to the school. I’ll find Remus and Peter.” “And Snape?” “Only for you, Lily, would James and I risk our life for that snake.” Sirius spat. “Yes, I’ll make sure he’s safe.” Lily nodded and ran to James. Sliding his arm over her shoulders, she tried to help him walk. “Lily?” James shook his head. “I’m going to kill Sirius!” “Oh, be quiet. I’m already here. Besides, you always said you wanted to take me on a romantic moonlit stroll.” “I’m sorry about Snape, Lily.” James whispered. “It just got out of hand.” “I know.” Lily nodded. “I don’t know what I would’ve done if…” “Anything had happened to him. Yeah, I get it, Lily.” “No, you don’t. You never do.” Lily leaned closer and kissed James softly and tenderly on the lips. “But you are learning.”
