It was a dark night. It was fearfully cold and snowing. The road was empty, except for one young woman.
She was running and stumbling down the road. Behind her was a small child.
In the middle of the road, the woman stopped. She bent down to whisper in the child’s ear. Then she got up, slowly, staggering slightly, as if it took a lot of effort.
“You come back, mum?” asked the little girl.
The woman paused to wipe her sparkling eye. “Yes,” she said finally “I will.” She gave a hug to her daughter, and then struggled down the road.
A little later, the road was deserted.
Diary Entry #1:
The villagers found me wandering aimlessly. I was a small girl. My mother had told me to stay. I somehow instinctively knew not to listen. I did not stay. But I was found. I never saw her again, but I knew these were the people she had hoped I would meet.
I had been walking around, the rain pelting down mercilessly when they came. First there was a young man. He was not very old, he could have been my brother.
“Diana?” He asked me, his blue eyes kind.
I nodded my head.
“Your mother told us where to find you. Don’t worry. You’ll be safe.”
I nodded again.
He took my hand and I held it tight.
Next there was a woman, soft and loving. She smiled warmly at me. “Hello.” she said. Noticing my sad expression she said “It’ll be okay.”
I shook my head and started to sob. “I want my mummy!” I cried. But I knew I would not find her.
The woman took me in her arms. She held me and cradled me. “Don’t worry” she whispered "Don't worry, my Arina", like a lullaby, over an over."Arina" meant "strong" in their language. She called me strong. The weak, small thing I was. That was all she said, but it was enough. Then she took me home.
