Lucy is dead and Audrey is waiting patiently. She is now too tired to mourn so she waits and waits and waits for Lucy to come back to her.
Audrey Weasley is fidgeting slightly.
Molly sits beside her and is composed. And then there's a tiny shatter. A crack has formed. Another. And some more.
Molly Weasley is slowly breaking.
All Percy can think is fuck fuck fuck. Where did he go wrong, was it him, was it her, where did Lucy go?
Percy Weasley begins to cry.
Lucy Weasley was killed by a blade that was struck by a storm and punctured this one damn bubble.
They never even knew what it was called.
A for apple, B for blood. C for clot, D for dead.
The clot was like a massive star towards the end of its life. It expanded and expanded, and then it ruptured, turning into nothingness. That is what Lucy Weasley is now. She didn't know, no one knew. She was in the library, reaching up to get a book and her brain popped like a balloon and like all the little children at the party, everyone screamed when she fell.
Audrey. Audrey. Audrey.
She is not coming back.
She can almost hear her saying, "I am, I will, I shall."
Audrey needs her to come back.
Molly realizes that she is an only child, just like she was back when she was six and Lucy had not happened yet.
Lucy will no longer wear her hand me downs, will no longer do her hair or steal her glasses. Lucy had stolen her heart and gone away, that bitch.
When Percy found out, he ran and ran and ran. It was too late though, Lucy had died on the spot. Her body lay in an awkward position and there was no way he could have made himself believe, "She's only sleeping."
Lucy was his baby girl.
The family sits and stands, cries and weeps. They are alone and they are all waiting.
"She's not coming back."
Molly is the one who says it first. The first blow.
"But we can hope?" asks Audrey. She is so weak. Percy's arm goes around her and his daughter and he holds them there for many moments. The family has aged ten years in ten days, Percy is now an old man.
They all know Molly is right. And they all know they need to move beyond the sadness and the grief. Her absence will linger forever, but that is a bitter truth they must accept.
"I'll make tea." Molly stands and kisses both of them on the cheek. She needs to be strong for everyone, so they can recognize that Lucy will be gone forever. As she reaches the cupboard, for the first time, she does not remove Lucy's cup.
They drink in silence. Audrey holds hers with both hands and Percy is already finished.
Sitting together makes them feel like everything might be okay one day.
