“Maybe…”

“No…”

“But what if…”

“No!”

“But…”

“I said no,” Remus sharply said to Sirius that night when everyone, including Peter, was dead asleep.

“It’s still a possibility. Nova might be just pretending to date Prongs to help him out with Lily,” Sirius pressed on.

“Impossible,” Remus countered. “She can’t lie. And what if Prongs isn’t even into Lily anymore? He stopped asking her on a date every ten minutes.”

Sirius gave him an ‘are-you-kidding’ look, so Remus sighed. “Okay, yes, fine. So there’s no way in hell Prongs could love a girl for six years and then suddenly stop loving her because another beautiful and smart and nice and-”

“You have a girlfriend, Moony,” Sirius said with a frown. Remus’ cheeks heated up.

“I know that! I’m just listing what other people might think.”

“Mhm. Sure. You carry on with that, Moony, I’m intrigued.”

“Go to bed, Padfoot,” Remus muttered.

“But we do agree that Prongs still pines after Lily?” Sirius asked.

“Yes, fine, whatever. But there’s no way Nova’s pretending. She couldn’t if her life depended on it, you know that. She can’t lie. And besides, maybe Prongs is only dating her to see if he can get over Lily with her.”

Sirius’ frown deepened. “But that’s not right…”

Moony stared at Sirius. “Sirius. Since when have you cared about whether or a girl is treated fair in a relationship? You’ve been just shagging them and tossing them away to get another one!”

“Have you seen me with one yet?” He irritably asked.

Remus opened his mouth to answer that, yes, of course, he had, when he halted. No, the only girls Sirius had been around were Lily, Nita, and Nova.

And he was positive that he hadn’t shagged any of them. Prongs would have killed him if he touched Lily. Nova would have beaten the hell out of him if he touched Nita.

And everyone would hex Sirius if he touched Nova, Remus was sure.

“No, right? That’s what I thought,” he said, turning over to go to sleep.

What was going on with him? Remus had no idea, but he sure as hell was going to find out.

***

“Good morning!”

Sirius opened his eyes to Nova’s bright smile. As he began comprehending that she was in their room, he shouted, “What are you doing here?!” as he pulled the blanket up.

She rolled her eyes. “What does it look like I’m doing? I’m waking you guys up. Remus, get up!”

“And a simple knock wouldn’t have worked?”

“You wouldn’t have gotten up, and you know it,” Nova told him, giving him a disapproving look. “Oh, bloody hell, Remus, would you get up?!”

“Mother of Merlin, Nova, have you any idea what time it is?!” Remus groaned, looking outside his window at the darkness.

She grinned. “Yes, of course, it’s three in the morning.”

Sirius groaned. “Go away, Nova, I’m going back to bed.”

Nova frowned as she watched the two of them climb back into their beds and go back to sleep. “You know, Arthur Weasley has been teaching me his great bat boogey hex, and I’ve been just dying to try it out on an actual person…” she trailed off, smiling amusedly as the two boys jumped out of their beds and ran towards their bathroom to wash their faces.

“Okay,” Remus sighed. “What’s up?”

Nova sat down on Sirius’ bed. “Alright, here’s the deal. I’ve been hearing word that somebody is out to get the four of you Marauders. Once I did, I went snooping and tried to catch what the whole deal is. I don’t know who and I don’t know when, but I know it’s going to be brutal, and I want you guys to be safe. I’m not telling this to Peter because I don’t want him to freak out and not get any sleep tonight. I’ll talk to him in the morning. As far as I know, it’s a seventh year.”

Remus’ eyes widened as he stared at Sirius. “Quidditch,” they both breathed out.

Nova gave both of them a confused glance. “What?”

“They’re going to get back at us through James. On the Quidditch match this Saturday! It makes sense! This Saturday is the Slytherin-Gryffindor match,” Sirius explained.

“And James is going to be the target,” Remus concluded.

“Well, shit,” Nova frowned. “Lily’s not going to be happy,” she said, folding her arms.

Remus stared at her. “You won’t be either.”

“Well, yeah, but…” Nova trailed off before looking up again. “I mean, yeah. Yeah, I won’t.”

Remus and Sirius exchanged glances. “Nova, are you alright?” Sirius asked, looking at her with an unusual look.

She gave a questioning glance. “Yes, of course. Why wouldn’t I be?”

Remus shook his head. “You just seem off, is all.”

Nova blanked for a moment before coming back to reality and blurting out, “Did you know that when you die, your hair still grows for a couple of months?”

“Where on earth do you get this stuff from, woman?!” Sirius shouted, throwing his hands up.

A pillow was tossed at him. “Shut up, arse, I’m trying to sleep!”

Nova suppressed soft giggles into the palm of her hand. “That,” she smiled, “was bloody hilarious.”

“Oh, bugger off,” Sirius muttered, with a grim expression.

***

The hours that passed were quite dreary. All Peter did was sleep. All Remus did was stay up and worry. All Sirius did was dream about Nova. And all Nova did was pace around the common room before eventually passing out on the couch.

Remus was the first to get up and head down. He was also the first to find Nova.

He watched her with an amused expression on his face. “Nova, get up,” he said, shoving her a little. “Hey, Nova, come on. Wake up,” he tried again, shoving her a bit more roughly.

Nova only moaned, and pushed his hands off of her. “Go away.”

“Come on, Nova, you’ve got to wake up. You’ll miss classes.”

Her eyes opened as she stared right at Remus. She was silent for a few moments as she took the time to enjoy Remus’ wet hair and ‘just out of the shower’ sexiness. “Hi.”

He chuckled. “Hurry up, Nova, go up and get ready for classes.”

She nodded and did as he said, leaving just moments before Sirius came down. “Mate,” he worriedly said, ushering for him to sit down, “I have a serious problem.”

Remus lifted his eyebrows and sat opposite Sirius as he waited to hear the problem.

Sirius opened and closed his mouth several times before jumbling out, “I think I’m falling for Nova!”

Remus blinked. He was certainly not expecting that. “Er…what?”

Sirius groaned, and held his face in his hands. “This is horrible. She doesn’t even like me! She’s going out with James, for Merlin’s sake! I’m a shit best friend! What do I do?!”

Remus blinked. He didn’t know what else to do. “Why don’t you try taking her out somewhere and seeing if it changes anything?”

Sirius perked up. “I can! I know exactly what to do! Remus, you bloody genius, I love you, brother!”

Remus shoved Sirius off of him. “Get off me, Padfoot,” he muttered, as he started up an internal battle between himself and…well…himself.

“Oh, morning, Sirius!” they heard at the top of the Girls’ Dormitory stairs.

Nova came rushing down with Nita close at her side. “I didn’t know you were awake, yet,” she said, smiling sweetly at him. Sirius gave Remus a pained look when neither girl was looking.

Remus only shook his head.

Down at breakfast, Peter cleared his throat. “Now, in light of all the damn confusion in life and between us all, I’d like to find out what the fucking hell is going on.”

Nova shot a worried glance to Remus and Sirius. “First thing’s first. I’ve looked into this rumor, and someone, another seventh year, is planning major revenge on you four, and Sirius and Remus reckon it’ll be taken out at the match this Saturday, on James.”

Lily freaked. Literally. “NO! They can’t do that! No, that can’t happen! They’re going to hurt him! It’s Severus, I know it is! He’s got to be behind it, he despises James! He’s going to nearly kill him!”

All six of them craned in their seats to stare at Lily. James lifted a brow. “Lily, you don’t give a rats’ ass about my health.”

She threw her hands up. “Oh! What do you know! You selfish, arrogant, pig headed, self-centered, annoying prick! Why won’t you speak to me properly? Why do you go and dally away with Nova? You don’t even look at me anymore! Just look at me!”

Even Nova was surprised that Lily cracked like this. James gave a sort of taken aback look. Lily stood up and marched to the other side of the table, standing directly in front of James. “Lily, I didn’t mean to come off like a-”

He never got to finish because Lily chose that moment to crash her lips on his. Even James looked taken aback at her quite sudden action. Nova leaned back, satisfied.

Remus, Peter, and Sirius gave her incredulous looks. “You should be angry! You’re dating him! What are you doing?!”

“Shit,” Lily muttered. “Nova, I-”

Nova grinned at her. “It was a matter of time, girly.”

James looked like he was in heaven. “James only asked me to help him learn how to be proper and we ended up fake dating, so that he acted up less often and you would see that he isn’t so bad,” Nova explained. “None of it was real. I may be a terrible liar, but I do quite like acting, and they’re two different things, lying and acting. James just persuaded me to pretend that we’re acting this for a film.”

Lily’s mouth fell open. “I’ll forgive you, only because I got to snog him out of it.”

“You can do that whenever you want, I will never object,” James uttered, coming out of his little dreamland.

Remus frowned. This meant that he ditched his Ravenclaw date at Hogsmead for nothing.

Sirius, on the other hand, looked as joyful as can be. He shouted a very loud “YES!” and jumped out of his seat, kissing James on the cheek and sitting back down.

“Sirius, are you quite alright?” Nova asked, concerned. “I do hope you haven’t just noticed your gay feelings toward James, as that would put him in a right situation, now that he’s finally gotten the girl of his dreams.”

Sirius rolled his eyes and stared at her. “Believe me, I’m very straight.”

Nova had a hint of a smile playing on her lips as she spread the jam on her toast. “I’ll bet you are, Snuffles.”
