‘You’ll be able to see the Castle in a minute,’ Hagrid called from the front boat. ‘Three… Two… One’ All the muttering stopped as we stared in awe at the magnificent sight in front of us.

The castle was breath taking the turrets rose into the black sky, standing out grey. From every window warm, yellow light spilled out, the only word I could think of was home. It was even bigger and better than I imagined. When the boats pulled up into the boat house we began our very long journey to the top.

My nerves came back as we were lead into a front chamber and told to wait there by Hagrid who left us. The chamber was quite a big room, you could feel that everyone was nervous and no body spoke. Then the door opened and a tall man came in with brown eyes and brown hair. His robes were fitting but dirty and he was grinning slightly.

‘Good evening, I’m Professor Longbottom.’ He greeted us, his eyes sweeping over our nervous faces. ‘I’m sure many of you know what’s about to happen,’ he smiled, ‘in a few moments you will enter the Great Hall and join the rest of the school. But before you sit down you will be sorted into one of four houses. This is the fun part.’ He grinned at his own “joke”, but we were all silent as ever, so he continued. ‘By now I’m sure all of you know what these houses are named: Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Slytherin and Hufflepuff. While you attend Hogwarts your house is like your second family, you -’

I looked across at Scorpius, he looked as if he was having a conversation in his head, whilst still paying attention to Professor Longbottom, I noticed the rosy pink he had in his cheeks had vanished and his face was quite pail. On my other side was Al, his knees were shaking and he looked as if he was about to faint. I reached for his hand and gave it a squeeze. He looked at me and I smiled. As nervous as I was seeing the people around me who looked as if their lives depended on this decision made me feel a bit better, I know that sounds bad, but it was true.

‘- will earn you points and any rule breaking will lose you points. At the end of the year the house with the most points will win the house cup.’ He explained. When he finished we were so quiet I could have sworn you could have heard a pin drop. ‘Well two straight lines. Let’s go.’ He said, after sweeping the room with his eyes once more and leading us out the door.

The Great Hall took my breath away. It didn’t even compare to what I had imagined when Jasmine had explained to me. The candles were floating in mid-air and poured out a yellow, warm light. Above them was the forever going, never ending, star filled, galaxy swirling, purplely-black night sky. I think my face matched every other first year as we all looked up, gobs hanging open.

As we walked down in between two of the house tables I saw a crowd of red haired people sitting at the furthest to my right. They were all smiling and waved at Rose and Al as we came in. I walked past Jasmine on my left and she patted my shoulder grinning.

At the front of the hall we all gathered around an old, grubby looking hat. I was kind of confused, as were all the other first years. But no one else seemed to be, everyone was staring at the hat, as though it was about to talk. Then all of a sudden it did! I was quite startled I jumped slightly. So did everyone else. The hat sung a song about something, I wasn’t really paying attention I was too nervous about what house I was going to be put in.

When the hat was done Professor Longbottom stood out the front with a long piece of parchment and called the first name: Ark, Louise. A short girl, with long brown hair plated in two, approached the chair nervously and Professor Longbottom placed the hat on her head. She jumped a bit, it looked like she was having a conversation inside her head. Then after a few seconds the hat called out:
‘HUFFLEPUFF!’ The table in between Ravenclaw and Gryffindor cheered and Louise sighed and ran to join the end of her table.

Professor then called up the next person. I soon realised it was in alphabetical order, then without warning: ‘Boot, Katie.’ I almost jumped. Professor Longbottom smiled encouragingly at me as I approached the stool and he put the hat on my head.

‘Ahh!,’ it said.

‘What?’ I thought.

‘You’re a caring soul… mmm… brave I see, you stand up for what you believe. Always… always a good thing to have… mmm… willing to prove yourself I see?’ it continued.

‘I am. My sister is so smart and everyone expects me to be like her.’ I admitted.

‘Oh I know… and smart she is. Do you want to prove yourself?’

‘Yes, yes I do.’ I answered. I did, I wanted to be me.

‘Then I have the perfect place for you. Remember though, always keep your friends close.’ Then without warning it said aloud:

I was a bit startled and didn’t think about moving until Professor Longbottom took the hat off my head. I heard cheering from the furthest table to the left and went to sit down. I couldn’t look at Jasmine. It was dead silence from the other parts of the room. As I sat down in my seat the boy next to me shook my hand.

‘Welcome to Slytherin.’ He grinned. I tried to smile back. But I was confused.

I continued watching the sorting. Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, Slytherin. I jumped up and cheered when a girl called Joss Luther was sorted into Slytherin. She smiled at me and I shook her hand as she sat opposite me.

‘Malfoy, Scorpius.’ When I heard his name the whole room went silent. I could hear the buzzing of my blood cells in my ears. Professor Longbottom placed the hat on his head and it seemed like forever. I ended up looking at my watch and timed 5 minutes before the hat shouted: SLYTHERIN!

I cheered again, along with the rest of my house and hugged him as he came and sat next to me. I heard him breathe out a deep breath and relaxing once everyone’s eyes were back on the hat at the front of the room.

This was it, I thought. Me and Scorpius all the way, but he would probably ditch me. No more Al and no more Rose. I was in the house everyone despised and thought to be evil. I was going to have no friends, I refuse to mix with these status obsessed purebloods. Look, even I was prejudice towards my new house. I sighed, then was sucked out of my thoughts when I heard-

‘Potter, Albus.’ The room filled with whispers and I pinched Scorpius. ‘He’s so nervous.’ I whispered in his ear.

‘I know, but I’m positive he won’t be up there for as long as me,’ Scorpius smirked back. I shrugged.

‘Yeah, you were up there for over 5 minutes.’

‘You timed?’ he stared at me wide eyed.

‘Yeah, so I could tell you after. Now shush.’ I grinned then turned my attention back to Al who was sitting down on the stool. Professor Longbottom placed the hat on his head and he jumped. It took forever. His brow was furrowed and it looked like he was concerntrating real hard, then at last he sighed. It had to have been about five minutes and then the rip in the hat opened and it shouted-

There was a shocked silence all the red heads at the Gryffindor table had their gobs hanging open… I think the rest of the school did too. Rose had turned a pearly white. But at the same time Scorpius and I stood up and started cheering, the rest of the Slytherin table followed except they didn’t stand. Al look forever grateful at us and came to join the end of the table. It was silent everywhere else in the hall, and seemed as if every eye lay on Al. The sorting ceremony continued, but it still felt like there were eyes on Al. So Scorpius and I took the job of death staring anyone who was still staring at him.

‘Wealsey, Rose,’ Professor Longbottom called out. I turned my attention back to the front of the room. She looked a little nervous, but was confident as she walked to the stool. There was only one girl left now. As soon as Professor Longbottom placed the hat on her head, it called out:

The Gryffindor table cheered so loudly. I looked at Albus who was smiling slightly at all his cousin bear hugging Rose before she could sit down. The last girl, Arianna Zabini was placed in Slytherin and we clapped as she sat down at the end of the table.
