I know that I shouldn’t be with him. He knows that he shouldn’t be with me. No one would approve. But we didn’t care. Once upon a time…..I used to hate him. Everyone in their right mind hated Draco Malfoy. I did. Harry did. Ron did. He is the jerk, someone who everyone loves to hate. But nobody knows him. I didn’t know him until my sixth year. And then I fell in love.
“Hermione! Come on, we’re going to be late for Potions!” Harry’s voice snapped me out of my thoughts. We had just finished eating lunch at the Great Hall, and now had Potions with the Slytherins. Why was it always the Slytherins? How we never had Potions with the Hufflepuffs or Ravenclaws? Why the Slytherins?
I stood and followed Harry and Ron to the dungeons. I was a little behind them, so I caught some of their conversation.
“I think that whoever controls our schedules wants us dead!” Ron groaned. I smiled; it was almost as if he read my mind.
“It’s bad enough with Snape, but Slytherins! Hermione? Are you alright?” It took me a second to register that they were talking to ME. I looked up from the ground. Both of them were looking at me, more than a little concerned.
“Oh, sorry, what was that?” They shared a look that said, “Is the world going to end?”
“Are you alright?” Harry asked. “Do you need to go to the Hospital Wing?” Ron added.
I smiled. “No, it’ll be alright. I’m probably just tired.” I tried to convince them. I wasn’t tired at all, but I really didn’t want to talk about it right now. I could tell that they didn’t but it, but luckily, they left it alone. This wasn’t how I usually acted, I was the one who listened to everyone and everything, and had never once zoned out in my entire life. But I’ve been doing this all day now. Hmm.
Pretty soon we arrived at the Potion’s classroom. Late. Oh boy.
“Potter! Weasley! Granger! How wonderful to see you’ve finally decided to grace the class with your presence! Ten points from Gryffindor!” Snape barked the second we stepped into the classroom. The Slytherins snickered. The Gryffindors sighed. I was too caught up in my thoughts to be too upset. After Ron and Harry partnered up, there was no more people to partner up with. I sighed. Well then, I’ll just have to work alone.
I made my way to an empty desk near the back, and started to get my Potions book out.
“Granger! What do you think you are doing?” I looked up to se Professor Snape towering over me.
“S-Sirr, I’m, u-um, working?” It sounded more of a question, and less of an answer. Snape could always find ways to make me nervous. Any teachers could, but Professor Snape was an expert of it.
“Do you always just assume that whatever you do is right? If I tell you that you may work alone, then you may work alone. However, I do not believe I gave you permission Miss Granger. Another ten points from Gryffindor!” All I could do was sigh and nod. “Now, your partner shall be Malfoy.”
“Would you like another ten points taken?” Merlin! Why did he hate me so much? I just mumbled a no and dragged myself over to where Malfoy sat alone. No doubt had I gotten a partner, he would be allowed to work alone. But Professor Snape just loved Malfoy. I slammed myself down onto my seat. I expected him to make so snide comment, but he just stared at the desk. Hmm.
We both got to work. Almost as soon as I got my Potions book out, I zoned out once again. For the next thirty minutes it stayed that way. I almost didn’t realize when I had put in a wrong ingredient.
“No!” Malfoy’s eyes widened as he saw what I did. But it was too late. There was a resounding BOOM as the caldron exploded. It was as if cold water splashed onto me, and I came out of my thoughts.
“Oh no! There goes my grade! No!” I can’t believe that I was so stupid! Ughh!
“Granger! Malfoy!” Oh no, not again. I sighed.
“Twenty points from Gryffindor!” The right side of the room groaned. Please, please, pretty please!!
“Twenty points from Slytherin!” Yess! Finally! Fair treatment! I expected Malfoy to start complaining and whining about how it was my fault, but he just sat there. He and Snape exchanged glances, and the Professor gave a curt nod.
It made no sense. The Malfoy I knew would have been begging Professor Snape to change his mind, but this Malfoy just sat and started unblinkingly at the mess that used to be a cauldron. What’s going on? He looked, depressed.
“You’d better close your mouth, Granger. You’re attracting flies.” Malfoy said, but it was wrong. It wasn’t in his usual sneering voice. I didn’t even realize that my mouth had been open, so I quickly closed it. I glanced over at Harry and Ron’s table, but they were too busy discussing something to notice Malfoy’s strange behavior.
“Sorry.” I mumbled to him and turned to clean up the mess that was still on our desks.
“Why are you sorry? I only told you to close your mouth.” Malfoy said. But, it was almost as if he wasn’t here. He didn’t look at me while he talked, only stared at the desk. This was soooo not like him.
“Oh. Well, can you help me clean this up?” I asked gesturing to the desk. I wanted to know what was wrong with Malfoy.
He nodded and started to pull out his wand. This was wrong. This was not Malfoy. I needed to figure out what was wrong. Or else I will die. Not really. But still.
