Quarter Moon Chapter 5:

Luna watched as Harry and Ron sneaked up on Hermione. She swore mentally and her face was pressed against the glass window of the book shop.

“Can I help you?”

Luna turned from the window and saw a young girl with shoulder length dark hair approach her.

“Uh, no I was just looking,” she picked up the first book she saw titled “Gardening to Dummies.”

The girl chuckled, “I can see that.” She looked passed Luna and out at the scene that was unfolding. Harry and Ron were yelling at Hermione who returned their yells. She noticed a blonde man retreat into the darkness.

“Luna Lovegood?”

Luna looked up from pretending to flip through the pages of the book. “Erm, yes?”

“Tsk. Tsk. You haven’t changed a bit.”

Luna closed the book and put it back on the shelf, “do I know you?”

She smiled, “I’ve been getting that a lot lately. I’m Pansy…Pansy Parkinson.”

Luna backed away from her a few steps. Pansy treated her like she was a piece of garbage. Why was she being so nice to her now? “Why are you even talking to me? I’m ‘loony’ remember?”

Pansy rolled her green eyes. “Luna, that was when I was young and stupid. I was only a bitch to everyone because I wanted to be cool. I wanted to impress Draco.”

Luna crossed her arms and narrowed her eyes, “so you’re still infatuated with Mafloy?”

She laughed, “no, of course not! I’ve moved on from him.”

“Oh,” she uncrossed her arms.

“Luna, can we talk to you?”

Luna looked over Pansy’s shoulder and saw Ron and Harry walk in the shop. She noticed Ron nod at pansy who nodded back. Was she civil to everyone now? Maybe people do change for the better. First Malfoy, now her. Who’s next? Lucius? Yeah right, Luna mentally laughed at herself for thinking something so stupid.

Harry looked from Luna to Pansy and back. Pansy took the hint and walked away backed to the counter. Luna looked up at Harry. “What’s going on?” She asked.

Harry sighed and ran his fingers through his hair, “it’s Hermione. She ran off and we have no idea where she went.”

Luna’s eyes widened, “why didn’t you go after her when you saw her go?” She yelled. She was yelling more at Ron because she knew this was mostly his fault. He probably yelled at her and didn’t let Harry follow, she thought.

“Why are you yelling at me? I wasn’t the one who told her to meet Malfoy in the first place,” Ron said, putting the blame on Luna.

“So this is MY fault?! You’re insane,” she said.

He raised his eyebrows, “I’M insane?! Have you looked in the mirror lately?! You’re a psycho, crazy bitch! You don’t know what you’re talking about half the time. You think everything that happens has to do with nargals or sprites or whatever the hell goes through your fat head. Welcome to earth, sweetie.” Ron snapped at her.

Luna felt the tears form in her eyes, beginning to fog her vision. She felt her heart sink down to her butt. How could he say that to her? I thought we were friends, she thought. She looked over at Harry whose shoulder’s tensed. Why wasn’t he defending her? Did he think she was crazy too?

“Fine, if that’s what you think then we’re not friends anymore.” She turned to leave but then turned back to the boys. Her eyes were red and puffy. “Oh and I hope the nargals kill you in your sleep, assholes.” She was talking to both Harry and Ron. They both seemed taken aback by Luna’s swearing.

She turned around and left for real this time. She didn’t want to go back and see Hermione. She wanted to be alone. But how could she do that without owning a house?

She walked for miles until reaching a rural area with many little houses. She saw one that was for sale. She whipped her eyes and knocked on the door.

An old man opened it with a huge smile on his face, “hello, young lady. May I help you?”

She noticed the shine in his eyes which caused her to smile. “Uh, yeah, I saw this house was for sale and I wanted to know if I could buy it.” She took out her wallet that was full of cash. She always carried some money with her in case she needed it and she also just recently got paid from the hospital. She loved that job; it had a great pay.

His eyes lit up even more, “oh joy! The wife and I have been waiting for someone to buy this house for months. It’ll be five hundred dollars a month. Is that fine?”

She smiled, “that’s perfect.”

“Great! Just give us a minute to aparate and get our things out. We’ll leave out new address so you can send us the rent.” He said.

“That’ll be fine,” she said. “I’m Luna Lovegood, in case you’re wondering.”

“Oh, you know the famous Harry Potter?”

She was just forgetting about what happened in the shop until just now, “yes.”

“My granddaughter loves him. She has a picture of him in her room,” he smiled as he remembered. “She’s only eight, though.”

Luna laughed. She always thought it was funny when young girls loved men years older than they are. She thought it was cute. “Well I’ll see you in a month Mr…?”

“Oh, how silly of me, I’m Hank Ford. My wife’s name is Fiona.”

“Oh, then I’ll see you in a month, Mr. Ford.”

Luna spent the next two hours shopping for furniture and food. She was able to send everything to the house with her wand. Thank goodness for magic, she thought.

She got back to her house at around sunset. She knew Hermione must be worried about her, but she pushed that thought out of her mind. She didn’t want to see anyone right now. She just wanted to curl up on the couch and forget her troubles.

When she was half way home, she remembered she had all her clothes at Hermione’s house. Now she had to see Hermione even though she didn’t want to.

She closed her eyes and aparated to Hermione’s front door. She knocked and waited. It seemed like an eternity for Hermione to answer the door. “Luna?”

She saw that Hermione was crying. Her eyes were red and puffy and she was wrapped in her favorite red quilt. “Uh, I just came to get my stuff.”

“What do you mean?”

“I bought a small house for myself. I need to learn to fend for myself, Hermione.” She said.

She sniffled, “yes, I totally understand.”

Luna got her stuff without saying anything to Hermione. She tried to say goodbye but she pushed her out and closed the door on her. Luna heard sobs coming from the other side but she didn’t want to bother Hermione. It was best for her to just be alone for now.

When Luna got to her house, it was perfect. Not too old, not too new. It was cute and it felt like home.

Harry sat in front of the fireplace, thinking. He heard someone sit next to him. He looked over and saw Ginny’s sparkling blue eyes looking at him. She held out a mug, “you want some cocoa?”

He shook his head and pushed the mug away, “no.”

She frowned, “what’s the matter?”

“Well can you explain to me what everything is?” She asked.

He sighed, “today has been hell. Hermione and Luna hate Ron and I. Who knows what Ron’s doing now.”

She put her hand on his back and started rubbing it, “everything will soon be okay, I promise.”

“How do you know that?” He looked over at her. His green eyes were shining.

“Because I do…Soon everyone will be friends again.”

“Everyone but you and Luna,” he said.

She stopped rubbing his back and looked down at the floor. What was she supposed to say to that? She and Luna never got along. She hated to admit it, but she was jealous of Luna’s individuality. Being different wasn’t easy. Not having friends wasn’t easy. Ginny gave her credit for that.

She didn’t want to be her friend because back then all she cared about was fitting in with everyone else. She knows now that real friends are more important than a good reputation at Hogwarts. Maybe she should go talk to Luna.

“If it’ll make you happy, I can talk to Luna.” She said after the long silence.

“No, I don’t want to force you to do something you don’t want to do.” He said. He got up and started walking to the stairs, “I’m going to bed.” And with that, he disappeared. Ginny sighed heavily and got lost in thought in front of the fireplace.

Pansy Parkinson was about to lock up the shop. She turned the lights off and saw a light go off from the other side of the store. It was a light from a wand. “Who’s here?”

She walked toward the light and when she was close enough, a hand went over her mouth to keep her quiet. “Shh,” it was a male’s voice.

Pansy stuck her tongue out and licked the man’s hand. He instantly let go of her and she pulled out her wand and pointed it at him. She still couldn’t see his face, though. “Tell me who you are or I’ll hex you into next week!”

The light on his wand went out and she could see the silhouette of his hands. They were up as if saying ‘don’t hex me, please.’

“Tell me who you are,” she shouted. She took a step closer and felt her wand rest against his neck. “Tell me or I swear I’ll do it. I’ll hex you right here, right now.”

“Calm down, Parkinson, it’s just me.” He said.

She rolled her eyes, “I obviously don’t know who ‘me’ is.” She kept her wand pressed firmly against his neck, ready to hex him at any moment possible.

He chuckled, “it’s me. Draco Malfoy.”

She lowered her wand a bit and lit it up after saying ‘lumos.’ “Well, I’ll be. Draco Malfoy? I ahven’t seen you in years.”

He smirked, “I know. You look extremely hot.”

She rolled her eyes, “what do you want from me?”

“Get him to write another letter for me,” he said.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” She still held her wand near his face. He may be Draco, but he’s still a sneaky ferret.

“Oh don’t pretend like you don’t,” he said. “I want you to get him to write another letter to Granger for me.”

“Why? So you can keep messing with her head?”

“Exactly,” he said with a huge grin on his face.

“Why are you doing this? Why are you playing her?” She asked.

“Because I’m bored and have nothing better to do.” He said. Pansy rolled her eyes at that. What a stupid prick, she thought. “Why do you care anyway, Pansy? She’s not your friend. You hate her and she hates you. She’s just a stupid mudblood.”

“Well, Malfoy, unlike you, people change. I did because I want real friends.”

“We’re friends,” he said.

“No we’re not, Draco! I was only with you because I had a stupid schoolgirl crush on you.” She said.

He raised his eyebrows, “schoolgirl crush?” He laughed, “Pansy, you were madly in love with me.”

She was silent.

“And I bet you still are,” he smirked.

“Yeah right. You’re stupid, arrogant and obsessed with yourself. No thank you. I’d rather have a guy who doesn’t even know how to talk to a girl and who starts a conversation with ‘nice weather we’re having isn’t it?’” Pansy said. She instantly thought of Ron. Oh boy, she thought.

Draco stepped closer to her. “Yeah right. Just once with me and you’ll forget all those stupid guys.”

She backed away, “no.”

He stepped even closer. Their faces were inches away. “Want to bet?”

She glared at him, “go away.”

“I’ll hex you.”

“I’d like to see you try,” he laughed.

Her hands rolled into fists. Who did he think he was, coming in here thinking he’d smile at her and she’d end up in bed with him? Not happening, she thought.

“Get out of here. You’re not welcome.” She said.

He rolled his eyes, “oh just shut up and kiss me.”

He pressed his mouth hard on hers. She felt herself melt into him. Her mouth parted and he put his tongue in her mouth. She moved her lips with his and it felt so…right.

She pulled away once she realized what was going on. She slapped him across the face. “Get off of me!”

He put his hands around her waist. She started screaming and punching his chest. “Draco stop!”

He was nibbling on her ear, “you know you want it.” He whispered which sent chills down her spine. She pushed at his chest more but she couldn’t move him. He was too strong.

“DRACO, GET THE HELL OF ME!” She screamed at the top of her lungs.

He crashed his mouth on hers to shut her up. “Shut up,” he mumbled in between kisses.

She felt her arms get weak and she couldn’t push his chest anymore. He put her arms around his neck and pushed her against the wall. He slowly pulled away, “will you get him to write that letter for me?”

She looked into his blue eyes and felt her heart melt. Maybe she wasn’t really over him… “Sure, I’ll find him in the morning.” She tried to get off of him but he wouldn’t let her leave. “I have to go home.”

“Can you give me ten minutes?” He smirked.

No, no, no, no. No’s kept running through her brain. She didn’t want to; she was over Draco. Wasn’t she?

“Fine, I’ll answer for you,” he said and dragged her into the bathroom.

Pansy walked home with tears falling down her face. What did she just do?

Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.

She unlocked her house as tears fell down her face. She hung her coat up and walked into the kitchen. She saw someone in her fridge. How could that be? She lived alone.

“Excuse me?”

He stepped out of the fridge and looked at her. His red hair complimented the freckles on his cheeks. “Hey Pansy. What’s wrong? Why are you crying?”

“Ron? What are you doing in my house?”

“The back door was open,” he said. “I hope you don’t mind.

“Uh, I guess it’s fine…” She said awkwardly.

“Why are you crying, Pansy? What happened?” He stepped closer to her and held her cheek. His hand felt so warm against her skin. She closed her eyes and took in a deep breath. Was she developing a crush on Ron? How could she be so stupid and let Draco have his way with her? She wanted to crawl under a rock and die.

“I-it’s nothing,” she said.

“Well it has to be something if it made you cry. You can tell me, you know.” He said. His voice was soft and kind. He seemed perfect. Then why was she also attracted to Malfoy? She knew she was about to dive into a pool full of man eating sharks.

“I want to, but…” She didn’t know how to finish that sentence. What was she supposed to tell him? Draco practically raped her in the bathroom of a book store? That would hurt him, she could tell.

He caressed her cheek. She wanted to fall asleep in the warmth of his skin. His skin against hers just felt so right. She was starting to think that she only wanted Draco because she couldn’t have him. Everyone wants something they can’t have…

But she can have Ron. She wanted Ron. She wanted to get to know Ron. Her brain pounded in her head. She was so confused and had no idea what to do.

“Ron,” she softly took his hand off her face and held it, “I really need some sleep. Meet me at the center of Diagon Alley tomorrow at around two?” She smiled.

He smiled back at her, “how can I say no?”

She wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him into a hug. “I’ll see you tomorrow, then.”

After Ron left, Pansy took a long hot shower. When she got into bed, sleep couldn’t take over her. Her brain kept going back and forth. Draco. Ron. Draco. Ron. Draco. Ron.

She buried her face in her pillow and screamed, knowing no one can hear her.

Luna started a hot bath. She needed something to sooth her muscles. Today was a long day and she just wanted to escape it all. Just as she was about to undress and get in the tub, she heard a knock at the door. Great, she thought sarcastically.

She closed the bathroom door behind her and walked to the front of the house. She opened the door and she was shocked to see Ginny standing there. “Ginny? What are you doing here? Come to call me more names?” She wasn’t in the mood for Ginny’s stupid drama.

Ginny sighed, “no. I came here to apologize.”

“Did Harry tell you to do that?” She raised her eyebrows.

“Maybe, but I actually came.”

Luna crossed her arms and Ginny became uncomfortable. “Can I come in?” Ginny asked.

“No,” Luna said.

“Come on, Luna, I’m trying to say sorry but you’re just being a bitch about it.” She said.

“Wow, I was called a bitch a lot today. No go away and don’t come back.” Luna slammed the door in Ginny’s face.

Ginny backed away. She knew Luna wouldn’t forgive her. She shouldn’t considering how mean she was to her. She sighed heavily and aparated back home.

Luna locked the door and went back to the bathroom. She got in the tub and let herself relax in the warm, bubbly water. She forgot about everything, everyone. She felt great. She wanted to stay like this for the rest of her life.

The bright ray of sunshine woke Pansy up the next morning. She groaned and put her pillow over her face. Today she had to get him to write another letter to Hermione. It shouldn’t be that difficult because he was obviously infatuated with her for years. He would just watch from afar.

She brushed through her straight hair and put some mascara and eye liner on. She got dressed, put her shoes on, ate an apple and headed out the door.

She aparated to his house and knocked on the door.

“Hey, Pansy, what brings you here on this fine morning,” he said cheerfully.

How was he so cheerful? She thought.

“I need you to write another letter to Hermione, Blaise.”
