You Belong With Me
Song by Taylor Swift

It's been two years since the Dark Lord has been defeated. Hogwarts seemed like a different place for the past two years, even for the Slytherins. Astoria liked to think that Draco Malfoy had a hand in changing the outlook on Slytherins, but she kept the idea to herself. Her older sister, Daphne, had been in the same year with Draco Malfoy and often went on tangents on his betrayal to the Dark Lord. Astoria didn't believe for a moment that Draco Malfoy betrayed the Dark Lord. She did, however, believe that the Dark Lord betrayed Draco, as well as all of his followers, and that was that.

Arriving home from King's Cross Station was always a flurry of excitement. But the past two years, it was something of an adventure for Astoria and a relief. She dumped her trunk in her room and flounced back down the stairs. Her parents were talking quietly in the kitchen when she came back through. "I'm going over to see Draco for a bit," Astoria called to them and slammed out the back door. She had her Apparition License for over a year now and she was glad that for once, she didn’t have to ask for permission from her parents. She was an adult and a graduate of Hogwarts.

Excitement moved through her again as she popped into view of Malfoy Manor. The gates that had been closed in past years were open and almost inviting. Astoria never questioned if she was welcome or not to the Manor. She was a pureblood witch of acceptable family. She knew the Malfoys were forced to entertain guests now that were not like her family. She thought it was good for them no matter how much they hated it. A little more tolerance was a good thing for the Malfoys but she was still glad that she had the pureblood lineage to be welcome into their home.

Her friendship with Draco really started after the War. Most of the other Slytherins had shunned him for a while and her heart had ached for him. Only Pansy Parkinson, whose allegiances changed with the directions of the winds, had given him any attention at first. What Draco didn’t know was while she was friendly with him, she was also badmouthing him to the others behind his back and Astoria had been really upset about that. She would have said something to Draco about it if she could have, but she didn’t want to pull him down even further. So, she became his friend and his confidant.

She secretly wished to be more but she was fairly sure that she had kept that secret tightly guarded. Sometimes she believed that Daphne suspected it, but so far, her sister hadn’t said anything to her and it was definitely something the older Greengrass sibling would use to her advantage. Maybe she was keeping it to herself to get some kind of big favor in the future. Asotria wasn’t surprised. Her sister was about as smart as the giant Squid in the lake at Hogwarts so she often tried to blackmail others into doing stuff for her.

You're on the phone with your girlfriend, she's upset
She's going off about something that you said
'Cause she doesn't get your humor like I do

I'm in the room, it's a typical Tuesday night
I'm listening to the kind of music she doesn't like
And she'll never know your story like I do

She knocked on the door and a house elf let her in. She approved of the pristine towel the little elf was wearing with the Malfoy crest. She happened to know that the Malfoys had surprise visits from the Department of Treatment of Magical Creatures and have since made sure that their servants and magical creatures were always in good condition. “Well, hello, Astoria,” Mrs. Malfoy said as she walked into the room. Astoria self consciously moved a hand through her hair and wondered if the honeyed strands were out of place from her usual braid. She didn’t mess with her looks much, because what you have is what you got, but Narcissa Malfoy was always dressed in the highest of fashion and you never saw a single strand of pale blond hair out of place.

“Hello, Mrs. Malfoy. I came by to see Draco if that is alright,” the young woman said.

Narcissa smiled and nodded. The smile was just several degrees warmer than one of her usual smiles but Astoria still felt that she passed some kind of test each time she came by. “You can go up to his room if you like.”  Astoria quickly made her way up the grand staircase and tried not to shudder as she passed the lower dining room. Draco had told her what had happened to their old Muggle Studies teacher. She had nightmares for a week afterwards but didn’t let him know.

When she got to the room she paused because she heard Draco’s voice through the slightly open door. His voice had deepened in the past two years and she took a moment to enjoy it before she focused on what he was saying. “Really, Pansy, why are you backing out on the benefit ball at the last minute?” Uh oh, she thought. Trouble in paradise. She couldn’t suppress the momentary pleasure at that.

“I just can’t go with you, Draco,” she heard Pansy say in her annoying nasal voice. Astoria chanced a peek through the door and saw Pansy’s head bouncing in the fireplace. “My parents have picked someone else for me to go with. But I really, really wanted to go with you.” Astoria rolled her eyes. Merlin, she didn’t even sound convincing! “Well, I’ll see you there, Draco. I have to go and get ready.”  With a slight pop, her head was gone and Astoria heard Draco cursing. Something flew across the room at an incredible speed and shattered on the other wall.

Astoria swallowed hard, knocked and came into Draco’s room. He was wearing black robes and his hair, that was usually slicked back, was disheveled as if he had run his hands through it. He looked up when she came in and his pale grey eyes locked onto her green ones. Her heart did a slow long roll in her chest but she forced herself to smile. “Bad time?” she asked. She looked to see that something that was made of green crystal had smashed against the wall. She pulled out her wand and silently repaired what was a green serpent and placed it back on his dresser.

Draco sighed as he ran his hand through his hair again and sat down in an emerald green chair. The chair matched the drapes and the bed coverings and was trimmed in silver. All the wood in the room was black. “Pansy can’t go with me to the benefit ball tonight. It seems as if none of the pureblood families want me to be with their daughters.” Astoria didn’t mention that Pansy was probably begging to go with someone else. Draco’s popularity was swiftly dying.

“What benefit?” she asked instead of telling him her speculations.

“A charity thing for the veterans of the war. We are required to put in appearance,” he said with his typical sneer. It made her smile.

“If you need someone to go with you, all you have to do is ask,” she offered.

He blinked as he looked at her again and his sneer fell away to a genuine smile. “So often, I only see you as my friend and I forget you’re a girl.” She looked away with a fake smile on her lips so he wouldn’t see the pain his words caused her. “Would you go with me? It would be horribly embarrassing if I didn’t have a date at all.”

Her smile brightened and she turned back to look at him. “Yes, I’ll go with you. When will you pick me up?”

But she wears short skirts, I wear T-shirts
She's Cheer Captain and I'm on the bleachers
Dreaming about the day when you wake up and find
That what you're looking for has been here the whole time

If you could see that I'm the one who understands you
Been here all along, so why can't you see?
You, you belong with me, you belong with me

Three hours later, Astoria was ready and her heart was thumping in her chest. She took one last look in the mirror and headed down the stairs to meet Draco. She heard her parents open the door for him and she went down the stairs slowly because she was afraid of tripping over the end of her dress robes. When she got within sight of Draco her heart skipped again. He was in emerald green dress robes and looked very dashing. He looked up and she smiled as he blinked and stared.

She took more time in her appearance tonight than she had ever before. Her honey colored hair was in long ringlets and fell from a pile on top of her head. Her dress robes were silver and it seemed as if it shined just as the stars in the heavens above. They were sleeveless with a high collar in the back and the bodice was cut low but not indecently so. The dress hugged her curves making it clear to anyone that she was a woman. Her jewelry was simple but elegant with emeralds in her ears and around her neck. She wore only one ring that had been a gift from Draco a year before for Christmas. It was silver with an emerald in the center and serpents carved into the silver on the sides. Her nails were clear and long and the make up just accented her green eyes.

Once Draco recovered from the shock, she saw him smile. “You look absolutely enchanting,” he told her and she beamed.

Walking the streets with you and your worn-out jeans
I can't help thinking this is how it ought to be
Laughing on a park bench, thinking to myself
Hey, isn't this easy?

And you've got a smile that could light up this whole town
I haven't seen it in a while since she brought you down
You say you're fine, I know you better than that
Hey, what ya doing with a girl like that?

When they arrived to the ball, they had to go through a line of heroes. Of course, Harry Potter was there, along with his faithful followers Ron Weasley, Ginny Weasley, and the muggleborn Hermione Granger. She was proud that Draco only inclined his head in greeting before quickly moving through the line and not shaking hands. She heard the praises for the team of heroes so often that seeing them in person almost seemed tiresome. “I wonder if they are as tired of it all as I am,” she speculated out loud and Draco turned to look at her.

“What do you mean?” he asked.

“The constant attention and bringing back that time in their heads. I wonder if we will all just be able to move past it eventually,” Astoria replied as they entered a ballroom in the Ministry of Magic. It was decorated in purple and gold. A house elf went by wearing a purple and gold tunic with a tray of champagne. She picked up a glass and looked back at Draco as she sipped.

“You really do amaze me sometimes, Astoria,” he told her as he did the same. Her heart sped up at the look he gave her over the rim of his glass. She watched, helplessly mesmerized, as the golden liquid disappeared between his lips. “And oddly refreshing. Tell me, what do you remember?”

Her eyes glanced away and she looped her arm through his as they made their way around the tables. He brought her to the table marked for the Malfoys and pulled out her chair. When they sat, she told him. “Potter had just entered the Great Hall and Pansy Parkinson was yelling to turn him in. McGonagall had ordered Slughorn to get us out but I stayed behind when I saw that you didn’t leave. I stayed behind. I…” her words faltered and she looked at him helplessly. He nodded for her continue. “I don’t want to tread on your beliefs, Draco, but I didn’t agree with the Dark Lord. Maybe muggleborns shouldn’t have the gifts they have received, but genocide wasn’t the way to solve it. We don’t even have an answer as to why muggleborns even happen. I didn’t want to fight against him but I wanted to see how it would end. I wanted to see if he would be defeated. You know, it is rumored that he had a muggle father. That he wasn’t even a pureblood.” Her eyes were wide on his waiting for him to confirm those rumors. When he nodded, she shook her head. “He must have been quite persuasive to have so many pureblood followers.”

Draco looked away and his jaw was locked. A muscle ticked away in his cheek as his thoughts carried him away. “I wouldn’t say he was persuasive as much as he was resourceful and knowledgeable. Nothing worse than the knowledge to destroy a person.”

She reached for his hand and squeezed. “Even a destroyed person can build themselves back up on top of the ruins. They may never be the same, but the foundation is there.” Their eyes locked and something clicked for Draco. Something that had never clicked before. It echoed inside him with each heartbeat. And was suddenly drown out by a loud shriek.

She wears high heels, I wear sneakers
She's Cheer Captain and I'm on the bleachers
Dreaming about the day when you wake up and find
That what you're looking for has been here the whole time

If you could see that I'm the one who understands you
Been here all along, so why can't you see?
You belong with me

Pansy Parkinson had arrived. She was wearing dress robes the color of blood red. Her nails and lipstick matched it as if she had used lipstick made of blood and dipped her fingers into an open body on her way to the ball. The robes were horribly tight and didn’t leave much to the imagination. She was on the arm of Theodore Nott who looked quite uncomfortable in the black dress robes and being led around by the young woman in red. “Well, hello, Draco darling,” she said in a suggestive voice.

“Hello, Pansy,” he returned in a cold voice. His grey eyes raked over and it finally hit him that nothing about Pansy spoke to him anymore. She was a shell, and rather empty one at that.

The corners of her blood red lips lifted up and her dark brown eyes raked the girl sitting with him. “And who is this?” she asked.

“Astoria Greengrass,” Draco returned as he stood with his date. The room had filled while he had Astoria had been talking and the dance floor started to fill with dancers as music floated around them.

“Greengrass?” Pansy murmured. Her eyes sharpened as she recognized the pureblood name. “Daphne’s little sister? What a small world.”

“And getting smaller by the minute,” Astoria said with a cold smile. Draco approved and squeezed Astoria’s hand to let her know.

Pansy’s eyes froze over as she looked at Astoria and then turned her attention back to Draco. She ran one fingernail over his dress robes above his chest and took a step closer to him. “I hope you saved a dance for me, Draco,” she said in her best smoldering voice.

Draco used his other hand and ran his fingers lightly down her hand. Then with his usual smirk, he grabbed her hand and threw it from him. “I’m sorry, Pansy, but my parents don’t want me associating with people who want me just for my power. I assure you, Pansy, I have a lot of… power.” And with that, he pulled Astoria away from the sputtering Pansy and took her onto the dance floor. She seemed to just flow in his arms as they waltzed around the floor and Pansy was immediately forgotten.

Standing by and waiting at your back door
All this time how could you not know?
Baby, you belong with me, you belong with me

Oh, I remember you driving to my house in the middle of the night
I'm the one who makes you laugh when you know you're 'bout to cry
And I know your favorite songs and you tell me 'bout your dreams
Think I know where you belong, think I know it's with me

The rest of the evening had been… magical. There really was no other way to describe it. Astoria and Draco had danced, talked, laughed, and even, to her intense delight, held hands even when they weren’t dancing. They walked slowly towards her house as they had apparated further than was necessary. Astoria was glad to have this private time. She was even happier than he still had his hand wrapped around hers and every now and then would rub his thumb across her hand. She shivered at the contact. “Are you cold?” he asked as goose bumps rose across her skin.

“A little,” she admitted but she didn’t to hurry the pace. If anything, she wanted this night to never end. He shrugged out of his black cloak and swung it around her shoulders.

“Better?” he asked as they paused so he could pin the cloak correctly.

Since she was wearing heels, it brought her eyes about level with his mouth and suddenly, her throat went dry. He was standing so close and just the closeness of the contact made her shiver again. Her tongue flicked out to moisten her lips. His eyes tracked the movement and his hands tightened on her shoulders in response.

Can't you see that I'm the one who understands you?
Been here all along, so why can't you see?
You belong with me

Standing by and waiting at your back door
All this time, how could you not know?
Baby, you belong with me, you belong with me

Suddenly, Draco thought this wasn’t his little friend anymore. Astoria was standing before him, a beautiful woman in her own right, and was staring hungrily at his mouth as if it would be the only thing that could fill her hunger. One of his hands lifted and caressed her cheek before his finger slid around, underneath her hair, and brought her forward. He felt her intake of breath right before his lips hesitantly touched hers. He heard her moan and so he took the kiss deeper. He was surprised by the softness and sweetness of her lips and dug in for more.

Astoria’s hands went up his shoulders and into his fine hair, raking it from its slicked back style. She murmured his name, and while her lips were open, his tongue flicked inside. She thought she might just die of happiness right then and there.

You belong with me
Have you ever thought just maybe
You belong with me?
You belong with me

He crushed her to him and she felt his heart beat in time with hers. When he pulled away, her eyes were wide with passion, her lips swollen from his kiss, and her cheeks flushed with desire. “I don’t know what to say, Astoria,” he whispered as his thumb caressed her cheek.

Her smile bloomed and the stars twinkled in her green eyes. “I do,” she said softly. “It’s about bloody time you did that.”

Draco threw back in his head and laughed. It wasn’t often that he laughed which made the moment even more special to her. “Is that right?” he asked.

She stood up on her tip toes to kiss his mouth softly once more before she murmured, “Of course. You belong with me.”
