Chapter 26:
The Little Things

Have you heard the news?
Bad things come in twos
But I never knew,
'Bout the little things...
- Danny Elfman

I watched impatiently as Sirius slowly stirred, and eventually opened his eyes with a start.

"Good morning," I said with a dangerously sweet voice.

He blinked rapidly, trying to comprehend the situation. I smiled a humorless smile, my arms firmly crossed across my chest, as I stood rooted at the end of his bed. To be honest, I'm not sure which one of us looked more lost; me standing in his dorm, or Sirius Black with no recollection of the events that had took place hours ago.

"Where am I?" he slurred, looking around in a daze.

"Hell," I growled. "Black, you are an idiot!"

"What? What did I do?"

"You threw yourself from your broom onto Lloyd's, knocking him off, and then right through the stands - do I even need to tell that the stands are completely trashed because of your little stunt? You know, when people want to live dangerously, they run with scissors - they don't jump off brooms like some freaking spidermonkeys!"

"Oh, that," he said, and fell heavily back against the pillows.

"There's a party downstairs, you coming?" I asked eventually, as I gazed at his frowning face.

"We won?" he asked blankly.

"Of course we won!" I huffed, rolling my eyes. "I'm not here because I want to be, you know... James sent me to get your scrawny arse down, because there's someone looking for you."

Ah, yes. Vicky had got the impression that Sirius was suicidal because of their break-up and her relationship with Chuck, and literally harassed poor James to get Sirius down. James had used Lily as his human shield, before sending Vicky to harass me, instead.

And since Vicky and I are so good friends, I decided to get Sirius for her.

No, not really.

It just seemed to be the only way to get rid of her.

And I must say that Sirius looked quite adorable when sleeping. He snores, though.

Did I just call Sirius Black adorable!?

Oh, fuck. Did I get a Bludger smashed against my head, or what?

I watched Sirius sit up slowly, rubbing his head as he winced. My gaze immediatly fell to his scratches and bruises, but nothing too serious. He would survive.

I think.

"Painful, is it?" I asked sarcastically, as I held the door up for him.

He glared at me, as he limped past me, giving me a murderous look. "You know, this is all your fault!" he complained under his breath.

I slammed the door shut in front of him, and placed myself between him and the door, my eyes narrowed. How the hell can you roll the blmae on me, you moronic dog!?"

"Well, if you hadn't been so cavalier about your own safety, I wouldn't have needed to fling myself on Lloyd to begin with!"

"How the hell does my safety and Lloyd fit in the same sentence!? He was never a threat! He was just going for the Snitch like I was! God, Sirius! You're so paranoid! What, you're going to attack a tree next time I--"

He placed his hand firmly against my mouth, to shut me up. The rest of my sentence came out as a muffled complain, my eyes shooting daggers at him. He raised his brows slowly, as my muffles came to a sudden stop.

"Finished already?" he teased, and carefully removed his hand.

"Because it's impossible!" Sirius said and easily pushed me aside and opened the door.

I couldn't help but gape after him. "I AM NOT FINISHED, YOU... YOU... you..." I stammered, as he swiveled around to challenge me with his expression. "You YOU!" I snapped lamely, keeping my head high.

"Cute, Quency," Sirius threw back, and slowly made his way down.

"You come back right now!" I called after him, as I followed him.

For a person with a limp, he sure walked pretty fast.

My words were drowned as Sirius opened the door to the Common Room, and as I arrived there, he was nowhere to be seen.

"Fucking prat," I hissed under my breath, and snatched a bottle of Butterbeer from a guy passing me.

"Hey, that's my--" he started, but fell silent as he saw me. "Oh! Susie!"

I had to take a step backwards to be sure of it - yep, it was my cousin. "Chuckles!" I boomed, frowning at his miserable expression. "What's worng with you?" I demanded, and took a sip from the bottle.

And spitting it all over Chuck's shirt.

"Eww!" Chuck said, jumping away from me. "Was that necessary?"

"What is this!?" I grimaced, wiping my mouth with my sleeve.

"It's vodka, you imbecile," Chuck muttered, and tried to reach for the bottle. I hid it behind my back, dodging his reaching hand. "Give it, Susan!" he said firmly, and I raised my eyebrows at the use of my real name.

"Are you okay, Chuck?" I asked, slapping his hand away.

"Do I bloody look okay?" he said sarcastically, and I stared into his brown eyes.

At times I forgot how much alike we were. We both had got the same black hair and dark eyes, and a pointy nose. I didn't usually pay attention to these things, but I couldn't help but see the similiarities as I saw my own reflection in his deep eyes.

"Hey," I said quietly, still frowning, as I put my hand on his shoulder, shaking him a little. "What's up, then? Huh?"

He didn't answer, but looked down with a blush on his cheeks. I let my hand fall down from his shoulder, and waited. After a moment, Chuck very slowly looked up, and glanced across the room. Without another hesitation, I followed his eyes, and pursed my lips tightly together as I saw Vicky perched on the arm of Sirius' armchair, flinging her hair flirtaciously over her shoulder, as she laughed out loud. Chuck quickly looked away, and I did the same, my head slowly falling to one side, as I gazed up at him with a skeptical look. "Are you serious!?" I said, feeling my anger boil.

"Obviously I'm not," he said, smiling only for a second at his own joke.

"You're moping because Vicky the dunderhead is hitting it off with Sirius - obviously with no success, though?"

"Don't talk about her like that," Chuck muttered. "Anyway, we weren't... official... anyway."

I stared at him until he looked at me. "You snogged her in public, in the bloody Great Hall, for Christ's sake! How much more official do you have to get!?"

He shrugged helplessly, and I felt the urge to reach out for him again. I controlled the urge, and bit my lip. I hated the feeling of getting all mushy for other people. Hogwarts truly had messed up my anti-social strategy. Back at Beauxbaton I could've watched a girl cry her heart out without even thinking about pat her shoulder and say something sensible.

But this was Chuck, my favourite cousin, who brought me to the verge of insanity from time to time. No one had ever managed to make him this upset before, and it truly scared me.

It all came to me so fast that I had to blink a few times to comprehend the idea. It all seemed to make sense; I knew what to do. I knew how to make things better.

I had to stop being so bloody selfish.

My mission in life; to make Chuck smile again, even if it meant the end of me.

"I'll handle this," I said, and took a huge sip from the bottle, grimacing ever so slightly at the vile taste as I swallowed, like a fist of fire punching its way down my throat. I handed it back to Chuck, who gave me a look of pure panic.

"W-what are you going to do?" he asked weakly, following me as I marched across the room. "You're not going to hit her, are you?"

I snorted as I elbowed my way through the loud crowd, ignoring the enthusastic pounds in my back I got on my way. I arrived to the fireplace where the Marauders were sitting. Remus and Val looked up first from their places on the floor, ending their conversation abruptly. Remus and Val were at once alarmed, but for completely different reasons, I'm sure. James and Lily sat on the sofa, holding hands discreetly, while Peter seemed to be the oddball in the equation, sitting as far as possible from the couple, his eyes curious as he noticed me.

I didn't wave back when he did, but looked directly at Sirius, who frowned at me.

"Yes?" Vicky said coolly, raising her brows at me.

"Move, bitch," I said coldly, shoving her aside. She didn't budge from her seat, as I grabbed Sirius' face between my hands, and climbed in his lap, straddling him. I had never done this before, so I hoped my Oscar-worthy-shit looked believable enough for my plan to work. Sirius didn't have any time to react, before I pressed my lips harshly against his, skipping the gentle crap and jumping straight to what last time led us two into having sex on the kitchen counter.

Minus the sex, of course.

I heard a loud gasp right next to me, and a few cheers and whistles from the audience around me. I didn't give a damn, as I kissed Sirius, feeling his lips as eager as mine were. I tried to keep a professional attitude towards it all, but every once in a while, I felt my mind wander away from the original plan, and my body reacted like on its own will, arching against his, craving to get closer.

"How dare you?" Vicky demanded loudly, standing up.

I pulled slowly away, trying to play some time for me to pull my shit together. Sirius stared at me with wide eyes, his mouth hanging wide open. I straightened in his lap, my muscles tensed as I slowly let my hands fall on Sirius' shoulders, looking up at the towering Vicky. "I'm kissing my man, why?"

"Your man!?" Vicky hissed, her hands on her hips as she glared at me.

"Yes, got a problem with that?" I asked innocently, and frowned. "Aren't you dating Chuck?"

"No, I'm not--"

"So you just snogged him in front of the entire school this morning because... because you do that to everyone, right?"

"No, I--"

"You know, there's a word for people like you," I cut her off, smirking. "Some people would call it 'slutty', but I'm sure you're not slutty, are you?"

"No, I--" Vicky began again.

"Yeah, I'm sure you're just a natural... giver," I said in a sweet tone and smiled. I did a mental touch down dance as I heard people laugh openly at the look on Vicky's face. "It's good to have people like you around."

Vicky was fuming. I was suddenly very much aware of Sirius' hands on my hips, his hands burning through my shirt. I watched as Vicky swiveled around and almost ran into Chuck, who didn't look as miserable anymore.

"Charles!" Vicky said, trying to pull herself together. "Do something!" she snapped.

"No, sorry," Chuck said stiffly. "This is your shit - you clean it up."

I heard a few guys roar with laughter somewhere in the crowd - I recognized one of them being Finn - as Chuck turned on his heel and made his way through the crowd. People were now laughing hard, and pointing openly at Vicky.

I took this as my moment to quit the act. I felt my cheeks burn, as I awkwardly struggled to get up from Sirius' lap, suddenly finding both of our limbs everywhere. Sirius chuckled under his breath, as he helped me get up, standing up with me.

"You okay there, love?" he laughed, keeping one hand on my waist.

"I'm fine," I breathed, straightening my shirt.

I met Lily's stare, as I quickly made my way through the crowd. None of them seemed to see me anymore, as they sang 'GO GO GRYFFINDOR!' at the top of their lungs as if nothing had happened. Vicky had escaped the Common Room like her ass was on fire, and I was sure she wouldn't show her face around for some time.

Sirius followed me like a puppy - I snorted mentally at my comparison - even if I had no idea where to go. The entire room was spinning around, so I let Sirius entwine his arms around my waist, leading me swiftly through the crowd.

He opened the door to the boys' staircase, and pushed me inside, and quickly followed me, closing the door after himself. I let my eyes get used to the dark, before sitting down on one of the steps, Sirius already next to me.

"What was that?" he asked quietly, just as the crowd outside started with another victory song.

"I... don't know," I said with a frown.

"I just don't understand you," Sirius whispered.

"Me neither," I admitted, and we both laughed one short laugh.

"You know," Sirius said after a moment. "It's really irritating to not know what to expect when it comes to you. One moment you can be so fucking adorable and sweet, and lovely, and the next, you're one helluva annoying little thing. It's hell."

"It's bad," I agreed, looking away to hide my blush in the dark.

"It's the best kind of bad, though," he murmured, and I felt his hand fumble for mine in the darkness.

I automatically clenched both of my fists into tight balls, but let him take my right hand anyway. I watched him in the dark, as he raised my fist to his lips, and kissed it once.

"You're drooling on my hand," I said suddenly.

There was a short silence between us, until Sirius started laughing loudly. I couldn't help but join him, as I thought about my comment. I truly was the master of ruining moments normal people considered sweet, or something like it.

My hand was free, as Sirius laughed, and it had fallen casually on Sirius' knee. I didn't realize this until we both had calmed down. I stared at my hand there, tense as every other muscle in my body. As if someone had called my name, my head snapped up at the same time Sirius' head did, and we stared at each other.

"Why do you hate me?" he asked suddenly.

Okay, leave it to him to ruin moments from now on.

I quickly pulled my hand away, folding my arms tightly around my knees to keep myself from doing something stupid. "I don't hate you anymore than I hate anyone else."

Sirius snorted. "You hate everyone equally," he joked.

"True," I agreed after a moment.

"I really think we started the wrong way," he said slowly. "I mean, if we had met in any other circumstances, I'm sure we would've... um... you know. It wouldn't have been like this for us."

"I'm not so sure," I grumbled, pursing my lips tightly together. "You're the very core of what I loathe."

"You're the kind of girl I never thought I would be attracted to," Sirius said with a sigh.

"We're a messed up team, aren't we?"

"Team Oddball," he agreed.

We sat in silence, listening to the singing outside. The coolness in the staircase was soothing, and not uncomfortable at all. Not with Sirius next to me, his shoulder pressed against mine. It was so warm; his skin was like flames, sending waves of warmth through my entire body.

It was actually quite nice.
