Two Beds & a Coffee Machine
By: Savage Garden

Hermione sat against the wall in the hallway. She didn’t know how long she had been sitting there, but she was scared for her life. Tears were streaming down her face. She stood slowing, taking care not to make a sound. The door down the hall was slightly cracked open and she cautiously walked toward it. She pushed it open slowly and looked inside. He had finally fallen asleep. She took a deep breath as she proceeded the other way down the hall. The door on the end was closed. She opened it slowly and carefully.

“Rose,” she whispered, “Rose, it’s me.”

A little girl of five years old crawled slowly out from under the small bed in the room. Her blonde curls hanging in her face, hiding the tears that were flowing down her cheeks.

“Rose,” Hermione told the little girl, “I want you to pick out your favorite toys. Stay quiet, okay sweetie?”

The little girl nodded as she hugged her mother.

And she takes another step
Slowly she opens the door
Check that he is sleeping

Hermione stood up and let the little girl gather her toys. She went to the dresser and picked out a few clothes and packed them in one of Rose’s little backpacks.

She left the room and went back to the room he was sleeping in. Once inside the room she felt like he could hear her every movement. She carefully opened a drawer and pulled out its contents. She carefully put them in a bag and threw it over her shoulder.

She went back to Rose’s room. Rose was holding a stuffed bear.

“Mommy,” she said quietly, “what about Bear?”

She was referring to the white cat I had gotten when Crookshanks had died. Rose named him Bear when we got him, she was three.

“Mommy, are we gonna bring Bear too?”

“Yes, we can bring Bear,” Hermione told the little girl, “grab you princess backpack and go out to the car, I will get Bear, okay?”

“Okay Mommy.”

She picked up the little backpack and hugged her mother before leaving the room and slowly walking down the stairs.

Hermione took a deep breath before walking down the stairs herself. Bear was sitting on a chair in the living room. Hermione picked up the cat and walked to the door. Her beaded purse was sitting on a table by the door. She picked it up and shoved it in the bag with her clothes.

Pick up all the broken glass
And furniture on the floor
Been up half the night screaming
Now it’s time to get away

She left the house her and her husband had made into a home. But for her and Rose, this was no longer where she called home. This was now his house. She had never loved nor hated someone as much as she hated her husband. Many things were revealed the in the last few hours. She couldn’t believe that after being with him for seven years he would do this to her. She closed the door behind her as she made her way to the car where Rose was.

“Mommy,” she said, “where are we going to go?”

Hermione could hear the fear in her voice. Hermione couldn’t let the girl know she was just as scared.

“We are going to visit a friend of mine,” she said as she started the car.

It took an hour to get to the small house. The sun was just starting to rise, and the sky was turning grey under the thick clouds. She stopped and put the car in park. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath.

She was about to see someone she hasn’t seen or talked to in seven years. He was always a faithful friend, and she regretted everything she has done to him. She wasn’t even sure if this was a good idea, but he was all she had.

She stepped out of the car and Rose followed. She grabbed Rose’s hand and walked up to the door. She stared at the door for a few short moments before knocking.

“Who the bloody hell would be knocking on my door at-”

They stopped in midsentence after opening the door.

“Hi Ron,” Hermione said without smiling.

“What are you doing here?” he said opening the door to let her in.

“Mommy,” Rose said from behind her mother, “who’s he?”

“Mommy went to school with him,” she said kneeling down next to her, “his name is Ron.”

“Hi,” Rose said waving, “my name is Rose.”

She held her little hand out for him to shake. He took it gently in his hand.

“Ron,” Hermione said after a short silence, “can we stay here?”

“What?” he said looking at her, “Why?”

“Issues at home,” she told him, not wanting to go through the night’s events.

“Sure you can stay here,” he said, “I’ve missed you.”

He pulled her into a hug. She took a deep breath remembering the last time she saw him. It was a year after they had left Hogwarts.

“Hermione,” he said grabbing her hand in his, “will you be able to get out of work tonight?”

“I don’t think I will be able to,” she said.

“You have been working every night this week,” he said.

“I’m sorry,” she told him, “but you know how the ministry is, Ron.”

“I’ll see you when you get home right?” he asked.

“Yes,” she told him, “I love you.”

She kissed him before turning and leaving.

She had always felt bad about that day. And nothing could fix what she had done to him.

“How long do you need to stay?” he asked as he took the bag from Hermione.

“I don’t know, just until I find a place me Rose and I to live,” she told him.

“You two can stay as long as you would like,” he said leading them to a bedroom, “you can stay in my room with Rose, and I will sleep on the couch.”

“Don’t do that,” Hermione said, “you sleep here. I don’t want to impose.”

“There is two of you, and one of me,” he said, “You take the bed.”

“Thank you,” she smiled.

She hugged him tightly before letting go and looking at Rose.

“What do you say?”

“Thank you Mr. Ron.”

He smiled when she said that. Hermione looked at Ron and realized all of the mistakes she had made in her life.

“Mommy,” Rose said, “I’m tired.”

“Ok, baby,” Hermione told her, “let’s go get you in bed.”

“Here,” Ron said, “I can go put her in bed.”

“Thank you,” she said, “Rose, can Ron show you to the bedroom?”

“Yes,” she said smiling.

“She’s beautiful,” Ron said as he walked back into the living room.

“Thank you,” Hermione said.

“Can I ask you something?”

“Sure,” she said.

“Why did you leave?”

“Ron,” she told him, “I didn’t plan it.”

“So why did you leave?”

“I don’t really know,” she told him, “I just felt like I was under so much stress, I didn’t know what to do.”

Full of candy dreams and new toys

“We were all under stress,” he said, “but none of us left.”

“Ron, I’m sorry,” she said as tears began to slide down her cheek, “I was going to come home, I really was, but I just felt like if I did I would make your life so miserable.”

“Hermione,” he told her, “I haven’t felt the same way about another girl, I haven’t seen anyone else since you left.”

“So you did when we were together?”

“No,” he said stepping toward her, “I meant that once you left I never went on another date,” there was a slight pause while Hermione processed what she just heard, “I’ve missed you.”

Hermione threw herself at him and kissed him. She loved him, and he needed to know that. He needed to know that even though she had left him, she never stopped thinking about him, she never stopped loving him, and she never stopped wishing she could see him.

His hands pulled her closer. Her arms wrapped around his neck. They pulled out of the kiss, but were still in each other’s arms.

“Ron,” she said, “I missed you too. And every day I was gone, I was thinking of you, and of how much I wished to be with you. I wish everything turned out differently.”

“I do too,” he told her, “but the difference is that I was here waiting for you.”

He pulled away from her and sat on the couch. Hermione didn’t move from where she stood. She closed her eyes and wished everything had happened the way she wanted.

“Ron,” she said as she opened her eyes, “what if we don’t pick up where we left off, but start slowly. We can slowly get to know each other again. We can start over.”

“I’d like that.”

The next morning Rose woke up early. She walked into the living room to find her mother and Mr. Ron, asleep on the couch. She walked over to the couch.

“Mommy,” she said trying to wake her up, “Mommy, wake up.”

Her mother didn’t wake up.

“Mommy,” she said again, “Mommy wake up, I’m hungry.”

Her mother opened her eyes slowly, “ok sweetie, Mommy is awake.”

The little girl smiled as her mother sat up and stretched.

“What does my little Rosie want to eat?”

“Waffles,” she said sweetly.

“Ok sweetie,” her mother said, “let’s see if Ron has a waffle iron.”

She began to open cupboards looking for what she needed. All of the noise woke Ron up.

“What are you looking for?”

“Do you have a waffle iron?”

“A what?”

“I’m going to assume that is a no.”

“I do know of a place that has really good waffles,” he said, “I would love to take you two there.”

“Mommy,” Rose said, “I like this Mr. Ron man.”

The place was small. They sat at a table near the window. A lady came by to take their order.

“And what would you like?” the young woman asked Rose.

“I want chocolate milk and waffles.”

“Chocolate milk and waffles it is then.”

The woman left the table.

“Thank you Ron,” Hermione told him, “she has never liked someone this much this easily.”

“Well I’m glad she does,” he said, “because then I might have a better chance with her mother.”

He smiled and grabbed her hand across the table. He lifted it to his lips and kissed it gently. She smiled as he did this.
