“Man I wish Slughorn would ease up on the essays, why must we do two feet?” whined Lily to Rose.

“Because he enjoys torturing us,” said Sirius dropping into the chair next to Rose and they began snogging.

“Hmmm lovely, need any help Lily?” asked James slipping in the armchair next to her. She smiled at him and rested her head on his shoulder making to start complaining to someone else about the essay when a smart tapping on the window interrupted the moment, though Sirius and Rose were unaffected.

James stood up looking disappointed and walked over to the window. He opened it and let the owl into the room. It was one of the school owls and it stuck its leg out so James could untie the letter. Turning it over he read the writing to see it was addressed to Lily. He walked back over to her and handed her the letter.

“Is it for me?” she asked pointlessly. He smiled and handed her the letter turning to give her privacy, only to see Sirius and Rose were still attached to each other and oblivious to the fact Lily had a letter.
She opened it and began to read:

I have no idea how this stupid bird is going to find you, but it managed to find me when I wanted to send you a letter. Anyway, Mum and Dad are dead. They were in a car accident, a drunk ran through a red light killing them both instantly. Like you would care anyway, too busy being a freak. The funeral will be on February 15th so if you can extract yourself from that freak place long enough feel free to come, not that I really want you here anyway.

James stood and watched Lily’s face change from surprise to pure grief. She stood there and began shaking. He stood up and made to go over to see what was wrong, but she scrunched up the letter and threw it into the fire and ran up the stairs to the girls dormitory.

“What happened?” asked Sirius finally managing to extract his lips from Rose’s. He said nothing and raced up the stairs after Lily. He watched as she crumpled to the floor sobbing uncontrollably, oblivious to everyone watching.

“No, why them, why?”

“Oh Lily,” he said quietly reaching her at the top of the stairs pulling her into his chest, not caring that she was crying over his shirt. He smoothly lifted her into his arms and carried her into her dormitory and placed her on her bed.

Lily was vaguely aware someone was carrying her, she hoped it was James. She couldn’t feel anything but the pain and continued sobbing. She was alone now and no one cared. Now she was on her bed with the tears streaming silently down her face grief etched across her face. She could feel James was there and he made to leave.

“No stay,” she whispered quietly searching for his hand. In one motion he was next to her and she was in his arms.

Sirius and Rose crept up the stairs an hour later. Pushing the door open quietly they discovered the two fast asleep, James’ arms wrapped protectively around Lily.

“See I told you they would be fine. He knows what he is doing. He loves her, don’t worry.”

“He does?” Rose asked,

“Yes, can’t you see it on his face when he looks at her,” said Sirius wrapping his arms around Rose, kissing her (again).

A week later James was sitting in Charms miserably staring out the window.

“Preoccupied?” questioned Sirius.

“Shove off Padfoot,” grumbled James. Sirius took one look at his face and chuckled.

"You've got it baaaaaaaaad."

During lunch, James picked aimlessly at his food gazing off into the distance. Rose joined them, plopping down next to Sirius, giving him a quick kiss on the cheek and dumping a large pile of books and paper next to her.

“What’s all that for?” Sirius asked with a shocked face, “Are you planning on reading all of them?”

“No silly, its Lily’s homework. I have to take it to her tonight.” At the mention of Lily’s name, James’ head snapped up so he could face Rose.

“Is she here?” he asked searching the Great Hall hopefully.

“No Prongs, she’s in her dormitory still.”

“Oh. What are all those books for Rose?”

“Can I take them to her tonight?”

“Um, if you really want to.”

“Yes I do.” The other four watched as he gathered his things and walked to his next class and exchanged worried glances.

Later that night James walked up the staircase to Lily’s dormitory with all of her homework. He opened the door and Lily looked up from her homework,

“Where’s Rose?” he tried not to let that sting.

“I asked her if I could bring you your homework tonight.”

“Oh.” He dumped her things on her bedside table and sat on the end of her bed.

“Are you coming down to dinner tonight?”

“I’m not hungry.”

“Just come and sit with everyone. They are all missing you, even Sirius.”

“Lily please, you need to stop.”

“Stop what?”

“Pushing everyone away from you like this. We all care about and are worried we are here for you.”

“But I have no one. My parents are dead and my sister hates me. No one.”
“That’s not true. Rose has been your best friend since first year. Sirius, Remus and Peter all care and are worried about you as well.”

“What about you?”

“I-I love you Lily Evans. Not just like a sister, but with everything I have. You mean the world to me. Doesn’t that matter to you?” He looked up and met her deep emerald green eyes.

Lily sat in silence for a few minutes. James had just said that he loved her. LOVED HER. She raised her eye level to see he was still there waiting. Then he said,

“I am not that hard to chase away. I love you and I am willing to wait, however long it takes until you are ready. If you don’t feel the same way I will leave you alone and we can remain friends if that is what you want.”

Slowly she leaned into James and slid her hand into his beautiful messy black hair and kissed him. That was all he needed to know.
