Jackson looked around at Great Hall, the four tables were full of students from each house, all of them varying in age. Candles hung suspended in the air above them, there light flickering yet the huge Hall was brightly lit. The ceiling looked as though it was the night sky, it was clear and you could see almost every star glistening brightly. The staff were all sitting at a table in front of them, all their eyes were on the new students. Jackson gulped as he realized how many eyes were on him.

In front of the staff table sat a stool, on which was a musty hat that looked as though it had been through a wheat mill several times. Beside the hat stood the headmistress of the school, Professor McGonagall. She looked sternly at the first years and Jackson almost winced as her gaze passed over him.

“Well, I will now sort you into your houses. When I call your name you will come to me and sit on this stool. The hat will be placed on your head and you will be sorted, and then you will join your new house at their table.” She said in a shrill voice, looking over all the students. They all nodded as she pulled out a list.

“Adams, Cathleen” She called, a short blonde girl stumbled up to the chair and was sorted into Hufflepuff.

“Oh my gosh, I’m so nervous!” Amy whispered in his ear, Jackson nodded in agreement

“Me too…” He replied, then turned his attention back to the Headmistress. A few others were sorted when he heard a name he recognized.

“Bishop, Amy.” He heard Amy gulp before walking towards the stool and sitting down. The hat was placed on her head and the front fell over her eyes, the back only fell as low as her ponytail. There was a moment of silence and then…

“Ravenclaw!” The hat decreed, the hat was pulled off of Amy’s head and she ran over to the Ravenclaw table, smiling back at Jackson, Paige and James.

There were many others sorted before it came near Jackson in the alphabet, when at last…

“Macnair, Jackson” Professor McGonagall called, Jackson took a deep breath and walked up to the front of the great hall, receiving a pat on the back and a grin from James. He sat down on the stool, which wobbled underneath him. The hat was placed on his head and the great hall was blocked from his view.

“Well, well, well. A Macnair.” Said the sorting hat from inside his head, “Lots of ambition, and a lust for power… yet bravery and loyalty… a tough choice… tough choice… where shall I put you?” The hat said, not truly asking for his opinion.

“Slytherin!” The hat cried, and Jackson felt his heart sink to the floor. The hat was pulled off his head and he dragged himself to the Slytherin table. There was cheering there, but he wasn’t paying attention, now his newfound friends would hate him for sure. When he sat down he got congratulations and pats on the back, but he was oblivious to them. All that seemed to matter to him now was that he would have to suffer through seven years in a house he knew he didn’t belong in. Or do I? The hat has never been wrong before has it? He was barely paying attention as James was sorted into Gryffindor and Paige into Hufflepuff, but he did realize that all of them were in a different house.

There was a speech before the food appeared on the tables, but he didn’t soak in a single word of it. He ate numbly as the others around him talked loudly and discussed how wimpy the new Gryffindor’s looked and how horrible there Quidditch team would be that year. To him he might as well be eating ashes, that was until dessert came. He loaded his plate up with cake and treacle tart, and was stuffing mouth when he glanced over at the Gryffindor table, James was looking at him too. Jackson paused for a moment, hoping for a smile or grin from his new friend. But instead he received a glare and the cold shoulder. Once again the food in his mouth turned to ash.

* * *

Jackson followed the Slytherin Prefect and the other first years to the dungeon, where they were told the password (Pureblood) and shown their dormitories. All of the other first year boys in his dormitory were excited about being in Slytherin, and Jackson couldn’t help but hate them. At least Dad will be happy… He told himself as he pulled his pajama pants on. He sat down on his bed and sighed.

“What’s up with you grumpy?” Asked one of the boys, Jackson was pretty sure his name was Jared, or was it Jason?

“Nothing.” Jackson replied curtly, the boy raised an eyebrow.

“Miss your mommy?” He joked, the other boys laughed and Jackson rolled his eyes.

“Sure.” He said, not wanting to have an argument, he was not in the mood for a fight right now.

“Aw, poor baby. Home sick already?”  The red headed boy taunted, Jackson ignored him and pulled the blankets over himself. He was ready to go to sleep, this was day one of hell and he wanted it to end now. He was about to fall asleep, but was rudely awoken. His blankets were torn off of him and he groaned.

“Why can’t you just leave me alone?” Jackson moaned

“What? Is it your time of month or something?” Another boy said (named Turner), the others laughed, some of their eyes were watering.

“Just give me my blanket back and let me sleep.” Jackson pleaded.

“Make me!” Jason (Or whatever his name was) shouted, Jackson got out of bed, he was getting frustrated with his fellow Slytherin’s already. He ran at the boy, brandishing a fist. The boy squealed and dropped the blanket, much to the others amusement. Jackson grabbed his blanket and strode back over to his bed. The red headed Slytherin cleared his throat a bit and tried to redeem whatever dignity he had left.

“Good night.” Jackson stated, and the others said nothing, they seemed to have given up on bugging him, Or at least for now.  The lights in the room were put out, and after a few whispers the room fell silent. At last he could get some sleep and rest on what had happened that day.
