"I just don't understand it. When did Lavender and Ron decide they were all lovey dovey again?"
"I don't know, I think it started when it first snowed. Lavender was saying that she was making a snow angel when Ron tripped over her. I guess it went from there."
"That is like, the fourth couple that’s been formed in three days!"
"Maybe Jack Frost has some magic of his own or something."

The two girls laughed and continued on their way to the comfort of their common room. Hermione Granger and Ginny Weasley were supposedly the only two single girls left in Hogwarts. Even "Loony Luna" had landed herself a man. As they were on their way after dinner, a messy-black haired boy popped up in front of them.

"Hey Harry. How are you?" asked Hermione smiling. She immediately noticed the intense look on his face, directed at her friend. She bit her lip to keep from laughing as she witnessed the mental conversation occurring between the two. "Well, I'll let you guys be for now. Ginny we'll catch up later!"

What is going on? Am I the only single person left in this school!? thought Hermione as she dropped her belongings off in the dormitories. Grabbing her scarf and ice skates, she decided to go on the grounds for a little while. As she made her way towards the lake, she lost herself in her puzzled thoughts. When she reached the water’s edge, she pulled of her shoes and slid her feet into the new pair of skates her parents had sent her that Christmas. After lacing them up, she stood and entered the frozen water’s surface. The blades gripped the ice perfectly, allowing Hermione to glide all around its smooth texture. Tracing intricate patterns into the frozen lake, she found herself oblivious to the world; including the gaze of a certain student.

Draco Malfoy had been watching the girl on the ice since she arrived. The falling snowflakes obscured his vision, preventing him from identifying the person who easily glided across the ice. He walked closer until he came to the spot where her belongings were. Unfortunately, nothing was there to hint towards her identity. Deciding that standing was doing nothing for him, he ventured onto the ice. However, he neglected to remember that the expensive shoes he wore were not designed for icy surfaces. As his foot met the ice, it flew out from beneath him causing him to land on his back with a low thud. He blinked his eyes a few times and gasped, trying to regain some of the air that had been knocked out of him. He heard the faint sound of metal scratching into the ice growing steadily louder until he found himself looking up at the person he had been watching. “Malfoy?” she said with a confused tone. “Are you alright?”

Groaning, he put his hand to his face so as to cover his eyes. Great, of all people it just had to be Granger. “Yes I am. Just lost my footing for a moment.” He slowly sat up and was met with a hand in front of his face. “Do you want some help?” she asked politely, though the hesitancy on her face was enough for him to know that she was going against her better judgment. He wordlessly grabbed her hand and was astonished to find a tingling sensation shoot through his fingertips and up his arm. Looking up at her, he was pretty sure that she felt it too. Her eyes sparkled despite the diminishing light, momentarily entrancing him. However, he shook out of his thoughts when he realized who exactly this was again. Placing his signature smirk on his face again, he looked back at Hermione. “Well are you just gonna hold my hand or are you going to help me up?”

He watched as her cheeks flushed a crimson color before pulling him up and skating away from him. He turned around and watched as she came off the ice and began putting her shoes back on. As he watched her, he couldn’t help but think about how different they had become. Before the war, he never would have imagined breathing the same air as her. She was after all a Mudblood. But that was what he was designed to think; it was engraved into his head from the moment he was born. Now that the war was over and the control of his parents was gone, he was free to think for himself. Surprisingly, he found himself thinking about her now. She had grown up quite nicely over the years; more a woman both physically and mentally. The war had matured her, though her eyes still remained the same. One thing that struck Draco from the moment he met her was those eyes; those caramel colored eyes that seemed to sparkle in any atmosphere, which could entrance any person who dared to gaze into their depths.

“Are you just going to stare at me all day or are you waiting for me to help you off the ice?” she said with her usual spunk. Draco sneered at her, snapping out of his reveries once more as he started to walk back towards the lake’s edge.

“No thank you Granger. I am quite capable of…”

Before he could finish his sentence however, he found himself on his back once more. Bloody hell he thought angrily as he heard laughter. He slowly sat up and watched as Hermione lost it in a fit of laughter.

“Yes I can see that you are capable. Capable of falling on your arse!”

Draco bit his lip to prevent himself from joining her in laughter. He had to admit it was slightly amusing, though he wasn’t happy that she was laughing at his expense. Looking around him, he saw a small pile of snow lying a few inches away. Grinning, he formulated an idea and he silently crawled off the ice unnoticed. He picked up a small amount of the snow and formed it in his hands. Smirking, he turned back to Hermione who was finally starting to compose herself.

“Oy Granger! You think that’s funny?” She looked up and saw him holding a snowball in his hand.

“You wouldn’t dare…” she said as she slowly stood up.

As she did so, Draco launched the ball towards her, hitting her right in the face. Draco doubled over with laughter at the sight of the astonished expression on Hermione’s face. She narrowed her eyes and grabbed her own pile of snow, creating a perfectly circular snowball. She whistled loudly to get his attention, and then threw her own snowball. She laughed as it him on the top of the head and knocked him on his bum. Looking up at her, he did something she did not except. He smiled. For a moment, her heart fluttered in her chest as she gazed at that dazzling smile. Hermione regained her thoughts soon however when she noticed Malfoy stand. “Now you’re going to get it Granger.”

Hermione squealed as Draco ran towards her, throwing any snow he could get his hands on. She dashed around the grounds, trying to outrun him. However, Quidditch training had helped him greatly, allowing him to easily catch up with her. They ran all around the grounds, Draco hot on her tail. Suddenly, Hermione stopped gasping for breath. Not expecting the abrupt stop, Draco crashed into Hermione causing them both to fall into a pile of snow. Hermione was laughing until she realized she had an unusual weight on her. She opened her eyes and found Draco staring down at her. His arms were on either side of her, while her own were lying next to her body. Her chest rose and fell as she tried to regain her breath. Her eyes stared into Draco’s, losing herself in their gentle gaze. She had never seen his side of him before, carefree and pleasant. She sucked in a breath as his face got closer to hers, his eyes now on her lips. “Granger…” he whispered so softly that she almost didn’t hear it. Then his lips were on hers.

A shock of electricity far stronger than when their hands touched shot through both of them. They broke away quickly and stared at each other once more. “Whoa…” they both said at the same time. Hermione smiled at him, causing him to grin in return. Hermione’s eyes took in every detail of his face, noting the small scars that were forever imprinted on his face. He seemed more delicate than before; not as fearsome as he once was before the war. She looked back at him and grinned before bringing her lips to his in another kiss. After a moment, Draco rolled off her and let out a content sigh. “Guess Jack Frost didn’t forget about everyone after all.”
