A/N: Hey you guys! I am so sorry for the super delayed update. The start of the school year has made me too busy these last few weeks and gave me no time to write. But nevertheless, here’s a new one. I know it’s short, but the ones coming after will be longer. A fair warning to those of you who likes this story’s difference. You’ll start seeing more cheesiness and a lot of occ. Sorry! Pretty much after this chapter, all the cheesiness, cliché, and occness of the world is coming to this story. :] Enjoy! And please keep in mind that this story doesn’t follow HBP or DH canon.

P.S. I Love You
Chapter 14: Realizations

Hermione sat up in her bed in the infirmary as Harry, Ron, and Ginny surrounded her. They have been here for a while but had only asked her if she was alright. They didn’t ask any questions about Malfoy, the maze, or what happened. She was about to say something, but Ginny beat her to it.

“Hermione what happened in the maze?” she asked.

“I think a better question will be what is going on with you and Malfoy Hermione?” Harry asked.

“Yeah, what is going on? He seemed so protective over you all of a sudden. It is so unlike him.” Ron said.

“Well, I’ll tell you guys. But first you have to understand that all of that happened, I didn’t tell you for a reason. I didn’t want you to hurt him and get yourselves in trouble. So please, please, just listen and don’t interrupt. Ask questions when I’m done.” She told the two guys.

Ron turned beet red. “Oh no, you’re not involved with Malfoy are you?”

“What?” Harry asked.

“No, relax, I’m not involved with Malfoy,” Hermione reassured them.

“No, not yet,” Ginny was quick to add silently. Hermione heard her and shot her a look. She cowered from her death stare and chose to pick at a lose thread of her skirt.

“Look, at the start of the school year, Malfoy and I were being a bit civil towards each other. We were okay, he had compliments here and there but still the same. Then, we got stuck in his room, and he was really nice and all. But then, he became mean again. He was all nasty and we got into trouble instance after instance with the staff. Then, he became nice again. Over the holiday break we got close,” she said, not mentioning him kissing her. “And now, I think we’re acquaintances. As to what happened in the maze, we were stuck there for hours. At first, we weren’t talking to each other and then we worked together and got through the obstacles. And when we were so close to the exit, this mini Whomping Willow plant got a hold of me and started throwing me all over the place. Malfoy stopped it, but I fainted when I was cut loose. So, he brought me out, took me here, and said they didn’t want you guys fussing over me. I don’t know why he seemed to care so much. It just baffles me. So, like I said, we’re back to being friendly, I think. To be frank, I don’t know what we are. Wait, yes I do. We’re merely school mates, ex-arch nemesis, and current roommates. Nothing more okay?”

Both boys looked a bit unsure.

“What is it with you two and not believing me anymore?” Hermione half-screamed in frustration.

“Hermione, it’s not that we don’t believe you, or worse not trust you, it’s just that Malfoy’s actions have changed so much within these last few months, especially these last few days.” Harry said.

“Yeah, and he seems to have taken a liking into staring at you and having a look that clearly stated he is in deep thought.” Ron was quick to add.

“What do you mean?” Hermione asked.

“Like that,” Ginny said while pointing to the direction of the entrance to the infirmary.

Hermione looked and sure enough, Malfoy seemed to be staring at her, very deeply in thought. She waved her hands, seemingly asking, ‘Earth to Malfoy?’

“Well, I don’t know what is going on with that boy. He seems to have multiple identities. I have no idea whatsoever why he acts like that. But, for me, he’s still the same old Malfoy.”

Harry looked really angry. He turned towards the door and shouted at Malfoy.

“Oi! What do you need?”

Malfoy stared back, shaken out of his daze. He smirked.

“Nothing Potter, just making sure Granger is alright. I was wondering if I could talk to her for just a second.” Malfoy asked.

“And what do you need to talk to her about?” Ron asked quickly.

“Head duties; something your poor mind wouldn’t be able to relate with Weasley.” He replied back at Ron.

Ron turned beet red; the second time tonight.

“Well, alright go ahead,” Harry said, motioning for him to come close and talk to her.

Malfoy looked appalled. “I meant alone.”

Harry and Ron both became protective and said, “Why do you need to be alone with her?”

“It’s a very exclusive matter you dimwits. Dumbledore asked me not to tell anyone else but the Head Girl.” Malfoy looked very irritating, but didn’t make a move to start a fight. Hermione was relieved.

Ginny then butted in to their argument. “Guys, I think we should just leave. If Malfoy says it’s important Head matters, then we don’t have the right to butt in. Now let’s go,” she said dragging Harry and Ron out the door.

Just before they all got out the door Malfoy said, “Thanks Weasley.”

Harry, Ginny, Ron, and Hermione all looked surprised.

Malfoy rolled his eyes. “I have manners, you know.”

The three shook their heads and just continued out the door.

Hermione sat up straighter in her bed. She just stared at him. She was about to say something when Malfoy spoke.

“So, how are you? Are you feeling better?” he asked, taking a seat in the closest chair to her bed.

“Yes, I don’t even know why Madam Pomfrey is still keeping me here.” She said, while crossing her arms in a stubborn way.

“Oh come on, you know it’s for your own good. We don’t want you fainting or something. For all we know, you have some kind of concussion.” He said and Hermione was surprised to find a look of concern in his face. Maybe he didn’t want to be held liable for her.

“No, Madam Pomfrey already checked. She said I was clear of everything. And, are you concerned that Dumbledore or any of the staff will hold you liable of this accident?” She asked skeptically.

His face softened. “No, I was just making sure you were alright.”

Silence fell between them and a rather long one at that too.

“Hey. Thanks again for helping me. I really appreciate it. And all the things you’ve done while we were in the maze. I wasn’t expecting you to be that cooperative at first.” She said breaking the silence and offering him a grin.

“Don’t worry about it Granger. Consider it forgotten. Firstly, I needed a high grade, and second, I really needed to apologize for what I did during New Year’s Eve. So, that’s just my way of paying you back. Besides, I want to establish our friendship, don’t you?”

Hermione looked surprised and hesitated before saying, “Sure.”

Malfoy gave a hearty chuckle and shook his head. “That is the last thing you are. But anyway, I’m going to leave you now. Just wanted to make sure that you were alright.”

He stood and turned for the door.

“Wait, what was that project Dumbledore had?” Hermione asked suddenly.

He grinned. “Oh that, that was just a lie. He doesn’t have anything for us to do; not with you in a hospital bed. I just needed something to get to talk to you. Take care of yourself. I’ll see you when you get back.”

And he left. Hermione was really confused. Why on Earth would he want to just check on her? Has the world turned upside down?

Not even twenty minutes later, Madam Pomfrey came out of her office and walked to Hermione’s bed.

“I am releasing you now Ms. Granger. I don’t usually release students on the same day that they are confined in, but someone convinced me to do otherwise. At least I know, he’ll take good care of you, the way he stated his argument. Stay right there for a second.”

She walked away, muttering things about the person’s argument that Hermione ‘was perfectly well.’

Hermione grinned and realized that probably Harry or Ron argued with Madame Pomfrey to release her. After all, they haven’t talked or spent time together in ages. They must want her to spend time with them. She knew she could count on those guys. They know she doesn’t like being cooped up in the infirmary.

Madam Pomfrey went back to her bedside and gave Hermione her clothes back. She changed and was about to leave when Madam Pomfrey shouted after her, “Be sure to thank Mr. Malfoy, Miss Granger!”

That sent Hermione in a daze all the way back to her dormitory.

Malfoy sat back in the mauve couch in the Heads’ Common Room. He just argued with the old Madam Pomfrey. He won. Yes, he did argue Madam Pomfrey to release Hermione. It was very obvious to him that she didn’t want to be there. It didn’t need her to say anything for him to observe that.

He knew why he did it too. He’s slowly surrendering to the growing feelings that he has been harboring for the pretty brunette. They have been around for so long, but now, he was sure more than ever that he more than liked her. Not love her, but not just simply like her. It was a rather complex feeling he’d rather not spend the rest of his life analyzing. During Marsh’s activity, all he wanted to do was make up with her and become friends with her. But that day, right after saving her, his feelings grew. Something inside him stirred and he’s not quite sure what it is.

After seeing and saving her fragile and defenseless body in the maze, he felt a certain protectiveness for her. He suddenly didn’t want to let her go. That’s why he made that excuse about her friends and ordered Madam Pomfrey not to let them in. She didn’t know, but he was holding on to her hand the whole time. And as if having ESP, he let go just as she woke up.

What is this feeling that he is harboring for Hermione? Is it love that makes your heart twinge and cringe after seeing the person you like in pain? Is it love that makes you blind to not see anything wrong with that one person? Is it love that suffocates you every time she’s in the room? Is it love that makes your heart beat faster, your hands sweat and shake, and disable your mind from thinking?

Maybe it was. And maybe, just maybe, it’s time he’d do something about it.

Hermione made her way into her and Malfoy’s shared dormitory. She thinks it only appropriate that she thank him for saving her life again. She said the password to Noelle and Lawrence and got inside. She saw him sitting pretty in the massive mauve couch of the common room.

She walked to him and sat down right beside him, her feet curled underneath her. He glanced her way.

“Hey, I see you’ve been released,” Malfoy said teasingly.

She smiled a little. “Thanks for convincing Madam Pomfrey to release me. I thought my friends would have known me better and asked her themselves to release me. I guess not. But, thanks. I don’t know how many times I’d have to say it, or what I have to do to repay you for all the things you’ve done to me, tonight alone.”

“It’s no problem. Besides, I have six years of pranks, insults, and torture to pay back remember?”

“Yeah, I guess.” Hermione said.

They fell into a comfortable silence, with only the fire crackling as the sound in the massive common room.

“So, do you really think you’ll be able to rest for only one day and go back to school and Head Duties the next, or should I go plead Madam Pomfrey to get you back?” He said in a very playful manner.

“Oh haha. No, for your information, I am not as weak as you think.”

“Oh you sure do look like it.”

Hermione glared at him and turned around, her arms crossed.

“Gees, why are you such a sore loser?”

“I think you rubbed off on me.”

It was his turn to glare at her. They fell once again into a comfortable silence.

“God, could you believe all that we’ve been through just in this school year alone?” Hermione suddenly asked.

“Yeah, I feel like in the short time that we’ve pulled pranks on each other, insulted, ignored, helped, and even became friends, I’ve come to know you like a best friend or a sister whom I’ve known a long time.” He said with a smile.

“Oh, don’t be so melodramatic!” Hermione said.

“But I’m serious. Don’t you feel the same way?”

“Alright then.”

“But it has been fun, well at least the times we got along. Like when we got stuck in your dormitory. Or the time that we had to stay here for the Holiday Break. God, I can’t believe Dumbledore would do those things to us. You’d think he’d have more brains and decency to let his students sleep in the same room, let alone the same bed!” Hermione said with a small laugh.

Malfoy, who had been smiling this whole time, faltered. “Yeah, um… sure. Listen, I think I’ll head into bed now. Don’t worry about tonight. It’s no problem. Seriously.”

“But… I was just starting on how out of character it is for Dumbledore to do that! Don’t you want to hear?”

“Well, maybe it wasn’t Dumbledore’s doing,” he said solemnly and looking into Hermione’s eyes.

Her eyes widened with shock. Was he just implying something?

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

But Malfoy had already fled to his staircase. His footsteps could be heard from where Hermione sat.

“Malfoy!” she said standing up and making to follow. Unfortunately, his door was locked.

She grunted in frustration.

Malfoy grinned from where he sat in his bed inside his room.

After that, Hermione and Malfoy went about their daily routines. They were a lot closer these days, though. She never bothered to ask him what he meant that night. She had a strong feeling he was not going to tell her.

Her friends seemed a bit surprise at the way that she and Malfoy treated each other these days, especially after finding out the troubles he went to just to release her. If possible, Harry and Ron had become even more protective of her that it’s suffocating. Ginny, however, was another case. She kept on bugging Hermione over and over again that she strongly believes that Malfoy really was the sender of all those lovely and sweet love notes. Hermione would start to agree but then realize that it was Malfoy they’re talking about.

Even without Ginny, just like this very moment when she was in DADA class, sitting right beside Malfoy, she wondered whether it was possible that he could be behind all the letters. There weren’t too much clues to completely assume that it was him. There weren’t too little either to just totally scratch his name off. But still, she wondered, if not him, then who could possibly be sending those to her. She didn’t know too many boys her age that has that talent to express himself in the sweetest of ways.

It was at that moment that she looked at Malfoy, wondering whether it could be him, and contemplating on whether she should ask him if he knew anyone who could be sending them. He turned to look at her a few seconds later, probably after seeing her looking intently at him in his peripheral vision.

“Problem, Granger?”

“Huh, um, no,” she said shaking her head.

Malfoy chuckled and gave his head a slight shake. She looked cute confused.

“Alright, ladies and gentlemen, I want to all congratulate you on your very successful adventures in the maze last Saturday,” Professor Marsh started. “I am very proud to say that our Heads, although took the longest, got the highest grades after overcoming all of their differences. Let’s give them a round of applause.”

The whole class erupted with applause. Both Hermione and Malfoy turned beet red.

“Now, I would like to take this time to tell you that the success of the maze has lead me to the conclusion that I have been teaching well enough and each and every one of you have taken this seriously and studied hard. So, as a treat you guys have this class off today.”

Cheers erupted all over the class.

“Now, I am not sure if I can even do that, so please, don’t bother the other students that much. Class dismissed.” Professor Marsh said with a smile.

Hermione gave a shriek of glee. She glanced at Harry and Ron and they all knew where they were going.

The three of them walked out of the castle and into the school grounds. They reached the lake and each of them took their places. Harry sat at the huge rock, Ron lounged right next to him and Hermione went underneath the tree to have some shade.

“It’s really nice to have some time to spend with you guys. I feel so distant from the two of you this school year!” Hermione informed them.

Harry chuckled. “Yeah, I was kind of feeling the same thing.”

Ron grinned. “It’s alright. We know you’ve been very busy with all your Head duties.”

They all fell silent.

“Can you believe how fast time has flown by? It seemed only like yesterday that you two saved me from that troll that Quirell let out.”

Harry laughed. “Wow. That was a lifetime ago.”

“Not really.”

“Yes really.”

For the next ten minutes, the three of them spent the time reminiscing their earlier years. They talked about everything from the polyjuice potion in second year, to the DA and so many other things that happened last year.

Suddenly, a tiny speck from the sky could be seen. It grew larger and larger to show that it was a tiny brown owl. It was approaching quickly, in its legs a scarlet envelope. Instantly, Hermione knew what it was and who it was from. The owl finally reached her and swooped down ever so gracefully right next to her. Hermione took the letter of the owl and it took off.

With shaking hands, she opened the scarlet envelope and unfolded the expensive parchment. The same neat handwriting was seen and the same color ink.

Dearest Hermione,

Do you ever have that feeling, a passionate craving for something so impossible? That desire for something you don’t quite know? The desire so unattainable and cannot be satisfied? Well, put all that together and it doesn’t even sum up to half of what I feel for you. I don’t know how or why but it seems an unknown force is compelling me to think of you. The level of attraction I have for you has reached an unbearable state. It is intricately indescribable.

Your Secret Admirer

P.S. Have you any clues as to who I am yet?

“What’s that Hermione?” Harry asked.

“Nothing,” she said quickly showing to hide it in her pocket. Unfortunately, Ron who was closest to her was quicker than she was and got a hold of it. She tried getting it back, but his height was too much for her. Harry quickly came to his side and read along with Ron.

After a moment, Harry looked up, “There have been more of this?”

Hermione looked down. This was such bad timing. “Yes.”

“Why haven’t you told us about them?” Ron asked almost nervous and disappointed.

“Because it’s a personal matter, and you don’t need to know.”

“Yes we do. What if this supposed Secret Admirer is a dangerous dark wizard? A death eater? A lure to get to me?”

Hermione became angry easily. “You boys have to stop being too protective! I am old enough to make my own decisions! And right now, it’s to not talk to you!”

With that, she grabbed the letter from Ron and stormed up to the castle, fuming with anger.
