Look – at – me...”

Look At Me

Emerald green eyes were staring into Snape's black coal eyes. For an instant, Snape saw Lily Evans staring back at him and not Harry Potter, the-boy-who-lived and who looked remarkably like James Potter had when he himself, went to Hogwarts. As he slipped into darkness, he remembered that he had loved someone once. Once.

  Fall, 1975

Severus Snape has always loathed James Potter. He was arrogant, cocky, conceited and most of all annoying. Lastly, Potter liked Lily Evans. Out of all the people in the world, he had to like her. But who wouldn't fancy Lily? She was smart, beautiful, and the way her emerald green eyes sparkled when she laughed was enough to put anyone on her spell. He wondered if she knew how her eyes affected him. How they've always affected him --- even when they were younger.

Abruptly, he shook his head. He must not allow himself to have thoughts of Lily like that in his head. It was too dangerous, too risky during dark times like these. He grimaced, remembering that the Dark Lord can know everything about you with one look in your eyes. He can catch anyone in a lie. Severus knew this – has witnessed it with his own eyes...

Severus was leaning up against the tree trunk with his Potion's book in his hands. The sound of the water from the lake interrupted his thoughts. That wasn't all that had interrupted his thoughts. He had became vaguely aware of soft footsteps coming up from behind him. He immediately snapped his book shut, and reached into his pocket to grab his wand. Bracing himself for whoever it was who was intruding on his thoughts.

“Severus relax, it's only me.”

Instantly, without any thought Severus released his hold on his wand and put it away in his pocket. He turned around to find Lily Evans standing a few steps behind him. Her lips formed a smile, and her eyes brightened. Her flaming red hair was pushed neatly behind her shoulders. Not at all bothered by the soft breeze that blew past them.

Lily took a few more steps forward and stared around him, at the lake.

“It's a beautiful day to be by the lake,” Lily commented softly.

“Yes,” Severus agreed with a nod.

Lily was now by his side, and staring blankly ahead. Lily was normally so easy to read. Today, however her face was blank, and her eyes could easily hide any sadness that she might carry with her.

“Lily, what's wrong?”

She looked up at him, startled.

“What do you mean, 'what's wrong?'” Lily asked, now her face was puzzled and her eyes met with his.

“You simply look like you have something on your mind is all,” Severus stated, he paused and then added, “is something on your mind?”

“No.” She replied a little too quickly.

“Lily – is it – is it – Potter?” Severus spat out the word Potter with loathing and hate.

Lily shook her head.

“Then what is --”

“I spoke with Mulciber today,” Lily finally spoke, her face changing into anger. “Do you want to know what he said to me Severus?”

Severus frowned, no he did not want to hear what he said to Lily. He know whatever he had said to her was what was causing her distress now.

“He said that I should go back to where I came from Severus. He called me a Mudblood.” Snape grimaced at the word. She laughed bitterly. “Severus, don't grimace at the word. I know that you call people that yourself! Do you want to know what else he said Severus? He said that my blood was probably the most tainted blood out there. He said that I was no dirtier then the blood itself. All I could do was deduct points and walk away and I left my dignity behind.”

“You aren't dirty,” Severus said softly reaching to touch her arm tenderly.

She shook his hand away, and glared at him. Her eyes were now beginning to water and she looked away.

“I wish I could believe that. Severus – do you remember when we were younger – and I asked you if being Muggleborn made any difference in the Wizarding world and you replied no,” he nodded, that day was still clear in his mind. “I'm sorry that I believed you.”

Lily turned away and began to walk off. Against his better judgment, Severus raced up to catch up with her and grabbed her arm. Once again, she shook his touch away and Severus grabbed her arm before she could go any further.

“Look at me,” he said softly. Lily avoided his gaze and stared down at the ground. He gently took his hand and softly caressed her cheek. He lessened his hold on Lily but did not allow her to go. “You are anything but dirty. You are just as pure and good as they are. Don't ever let Mulciber tell you otherwise!”

It came out more as a demand then anything. Severus released his hold on Lily. She continued to stare at him, as though she had just saw him for the first time. Without saying another word, Severus turned ad walked away. Leaving Lily to stare at his retreating back with a look of regret and resentment.

Yes Severus Snape loved someone once...
But like always, love slipped away through his fingers...
