Chapter 3: One Year Later
“Congratulations Gin!” Said Hermione as she hugged her. Finally all the Weasley’s had graduated, till the next generation.
“Thanks Mione, I can’t wait for our healer training to start, oh I see Harry.” Ginny went over to him and they started cuddling. Hermione didn’t think it was such a good idea as her six older brothers kept their eyes on them.
“Hey Mione,” Said Ron as he hugged her, “good to have you back.”
“Ron I wasn’t gone, I was just taking a break. Besides I cam and visited you guys as much as I could”
“I know but still why did you have to take such a long break?”
“For Merlin’s sake Ronald, it was only one year, not one hundred. And I only did it so me and Gin could become Healers together.”
“Are you sure that’s the only reason?” He asked her with a knowing look.
“Ron, we already talked about this. I think I hear someone calling me, we’ll talk later.” Without waiting for his response Hermione walked out of the door for some fresh air. Of course no one had been calling her name she just didn’t want to talk about it.
A whole year, that’s how long she had managed to escape the wizarding world. It didn’t matter what lie she told everyone because they knew the real reason. Draco. They knew it had something to do with him but they didn’t know exactly what. He is why she decided to live in the muggle world for one years. So she wouldn’t be around causing him pain. Now he would be a year ahead of whatever he decided to do for a living. And maybe they didn’t ever have to see each other again.
She walked and sat under a tree, the same tree she had seen Draco under during Christmas. Just forget him already she told herself. She remembered how shocked her parents had been when after she graduated she asked if she could still live with them for one more year. Not that they didn’t want her to, they just assumed that she would have wanted to start her career right away. But they welcomed her with open arms, happy to have her for one whole year instead of only during the summer like they’ve had for the past seven years
If someone asked her what she did during the past year she wouldn’t be able to answer, because she simply doesn’t remember but she does remember counting the days the days until she came back. Back to the only place she felt she belonged. Ginny was ecstatic when Hermione asked if she would want to share a flat with her. This was going to be her new life, training as a Healer with Ginny and living with her. She knew it was going to feel like something was missing. She hadn’t really asked anyone about how Draco was doing, though she did hint but all she got was that he was living in the Malfoy Manor and she had no idea what he did as a living.
She can’t believe she had fallen in love with him. If only she didn’t remind him of his mother. Who knows they could have been together. They would have started out as the perfect couple then they could have gotten married and then children. Hold up she needs to slow her mind down. Her life really needed some romance. One particular guy tried to get with her in the muggle world, but his brown eyes and hair did northing to her. What she wanted was that soft blonde hair that she once had in her hands. She wanted those metallic eyes even when they were trying to avoid hers. She wanted those soft lips that felt so right next to hers. Why is it that we always we what we can’t have, she thought.
She wanted to tell anyone about what happened that night to Draco’s mother. Poor Draco having to see what his own mother went through. She had tried to convince him that his mother didn’t have to be a bad memory, she’s sure that there’s more happy memories of her than heart-wrenching ones. Then whenever he sees Hermione he doesn’t have to feel pain instead he feels joy.
She noticed how dark it was getting so she got up and started walking inside. She was physically tired, yesterday she had said her good-bye’s to her parents and had moved all her stuff to her new flat. Harry and Ron had helped her, tomorrow they would have to help Ginny. Hermione was sure they would have a harder time, seeing Ginny probably had more stuff than her. Then they also had to help with the furniture they were going to buy. She smiled when she remembered how they were struggling wit her bookcase. She walked in and was immediately met by a pair of green eyes.
“Hey Mione,” said Harry, “I was just about to go looking for you.”
“No reason, just felt like talking to you.” Yeah, about Draco. Yesterday she didn’t give him or Ron a chance. She made sure to order them around and keep them busy, so they didn’t ask any questions. All the other times she had seen them they hadn’t tried to ask about him, why are they asking now?
“Look Harry, I know you want to know about what happened between me and Draco. Go ahead and ask, but my answers will be limited.” He nodded then grabbed her by the elbow and led her to the kitchen, which was surprisingly empty.
They sat down on a couple of chairs. The silence was getting long, too long. She occupied herself by just staring at the dishes cleaning themselves. She decided to ask the one question that had been on her mind.
“So how is Draco doing? Wait forget I asked.”
“Actually he’s doing-
“No, Harry, I don’t want to know” she said as she held her hand as if trying to block his words.
“Hermione, shy are you acting like you don’t care for him?” asked a irritated Harry.
“Have you forgotten that Valentine’s night? Have you forgotten how he treated me, how he ignored me? Have you forgotten how hard I tried for him to notice me? Doesn’t that show that I cared for him? I still do, I care for him. So don’t you for a second tell me I don’t care for Draco, when I so obviously do.”
“Then act like it dammit!” he yelled as he slammed his hand down on the table, making her jump in surprise. Her vision started to get blurry as she tried to hold back from crying. She couldn’t believe Harry was taking Draco’s side over hers. When he noticed her tears he sighed and his shoulders slumped. He moved closer to her.
“I’m sorry, Mione,” he said as he hugged her, “it’s just he’s a lot worse than he was a year ago. I have a feeling it has something to do with what he told on graduation night. Can you just tell me?” She shook her head that was lying on his shoulder.
“If only I could Harry, but it’s up to him. It think being and Auror has gotten to your head.”
“Gee, Thanks. I really am sorry Mione, I didn’t mean to lose my temper. Please don’t tell Gin, I’m sure I’ll never hear the end of it if you do.”
“Don’t worry I won’t,” she said as she yawned, “it’s only eight and I’m already tired. I’m leaving so I’ll say goodbye to everyone.” Both walked towards the living room. She spotted Ginny and Ron talking and walked towards them.
“Hey, Gin, I’m tired so I’m going to the flat so bye. Bye Ron.” She gave all three of them a hug.
“Bye Mione, don’t forget bright and early so I can join you in that flat. I might bring someone else to help us.” Hermione nodded her head at Ginny and after many redheads managed to tell her farewell she made it to the door and left.
“So, Harry did you get anything out of her?” Ron asked him.
“No, I think we should just stop. She seemed really upset when I brought Draco up. I don’t even want to bring her up in front of him since last time.”
“Well I don’t care, I’m going to bring them together no matter what,” said a very determined Ginny, “and lucky me Draco just got here.” Both Harry and Ron turned around and saw Draco’s disheveled form.
Life really sucks. It just went from bad to worse to worse than worse. If it were up to Draco he would have left that damn mansion months ago. He had to live in it for a year or else he won’t get any of the Malfoy fortune. It’s not like he was greedy, but he did need to live off something.
He tried to avoid staying in the Malfoy Manor as much as possible. He went to visit Harry, Ron, even Blaise and Pansy, anything. He just didn’t want to stay there. All the ghosts and memories just wouldn’t go away.
Draco didn’t dare enter the room where his mother had died. If he did he was sure he would lose and nobody would be able to save him. The nightmares were the worst, he couldn’t close his eyes without them flooding his mind. His eyes were red from the lack of sleep, his hair disheveled and he hadn’t shaved in days.
It was almost over, a couple more weeks and he would get to leave this hell of his. He didn’t even know what he was going to do with his life. He remembered how he laughed when Harry suggested he take training to become and Auror but the more thought about it the more he like it.
Today Ginny graduated from Hogwarts, he wasn’t sure about going to The Burrow to celebrate. He wanted to go so he could she his friends and get away from the Manor. The only thing that was stopping him, was that Hermione will most likely also be there.
She was the other woman that haunted his dreams. She looked so beautiful the last time he had seen her. Her long hair falling down her back, her skin looked, felt so soft. Her tears making her look even more beautiful because they showed that she cared for him.
He wished he had never left her because the truth is he’s a lot worse off without her. He thought she was the reason he suffered but it was him all along not being able to let go. He knew she wouldn’t take him when he practically pushed her away. He hadn’t really seen or heard from or of her since they graduated
He told himself it was the fact that Ginny would probably kill him if he didn’t go but his heart was hoping to see Hermione there. When he finally decided to go to The Burrow it was pretty late, to top it off he had to pick some flowers for Ginny.
When he got there he found himself looking for a certain curly head. He was filled with disappointment when he didn’t find it. Then he saw Harry, Ron and Ginny talking, Ginny was the first to spot him. She waved at him and had a mischievous smile, he knew she was up to something. Harry and Ron both turned and nodded towards him and he went over to them.
“Hey Gin,” he said as he handed her the lilies, “congratulation on graduating.”
“Thank you, Draco,” she said then hugged him, “I was wondering if you could do me a favor?”
“Sure.” Not liking the mischievous look that was still on her face.
“Well it seems Harry and Ron here aren’t as strong as they may seem,” both frowned and protested when she said that, “so I was wondering if you could help them move my and my roommate’s furniture to our new flat?”
“But Ginny what-” started Ron but his sister’s hand came up and stopped him.
All three suddenly left to a corner and started arguing about something. Every now and then one would turn and look at him. What the hell is going on? He walked closer to them and then they moved farther away. This was just getting frustrating. Then they stopped and walked towards him again.
“So as I was asking before I got rudely interrupted by my idiot brother here, all you have to do is go to the flat maybe we‘ll be there before you maybe not and then we‘ll ago to the furniture store.” she said it all with pleading in her eyes.
“Fine I’ll go I’m sure it won’t be that bad with Harry and Ron there.” he said and turned to them but was surprised to see Harry and Ron with discontent in there eyes, like they lost a battle. “What were you guys talking about?”
“Oh, nothing, gotta go be right back.” said Ginny
“So who’s Ginny’s roommate?”
“Just some girl you probably don’t know from Ginny’s year.” said Harry
“I’m sure I would know them seeing as I went to Hogwarts too.”
“I still don’t think you would know her.” Before he could argue on that Ginny had come back.
“Okay, Draco, here’s the address,” she handed him a piece of parchment with writing on it, “you floo to the flat and get there early.”
“Does she know that I’m going to go?”
“She knows someone else is coming.” He nodded his head
The rest of the party went on. He was actually enjoying himself though he couldn’t help but be a bit sad because Hermione hadn’t shown up. It was getting late and he had to get up early, he had mostly agreed to help just so he could leave that shit hole that others would call a privilege to live in.
“Hey, Harry, I’m heading out.”
“Alright see you later mate.”
“Actually I was wondering, this is hard for me, but do you know how Hermione has been doing?” Harry looked quite happy when Draco asked him.
“She was here tonight, you had just missed her,” Draco mentally kicked himself for being late, “but don’t worry you’ll know how she’s been doing soon enough.”
What was that supposed to mean?
