Disclaimer: Yeah this is not mine. I do not own Harry Potter in any way, shape or form. If I did Draco and Hermione would be together and having beautiful babies.

Author’s note: I do not have the best track record with updating, but I’m going to try my best to do this one. Unlike all my other stories I actually have this one all planned out. There’s even going to be a soundtrack which can be found on my myspace in a couple of weeks. If you want a link to this just go to my author’s page and click homepage or even the other link at the bottom. Just check it out!! OH and I KNOW Draco is going to be highly out of character in this story but hopefully you’ll like it anyways! Also this completely disregards tHBP. Nothing in that book happened.

Why Don’t You Kiss Her

Chapter 1: Why Can’t We Be Friends?

“So that’s the reason you were always mean to me?” Hermione asked.

“Pretty much.” Draco answered as he lay back on the bench, his arms under his head.

“Because I was better than you at school?” She asked dubiously. They were sitting in the Great Hall so that they could take a little break from their patrol schedules. They had been talking like this for weeks. From first kisses to deepest fears to their home life they were covering it all. Their tentative friendship was fast becoming strong and neither of them knew quite what to do about it. It was strange, they were going completely against the status quo and even stranger, they liked it.

“Yes. You were totally turning my world upside down. Everything I believed was true wasn’t and suddenly my world seemed that much smaller and wrong. I mean how would you feel if in one week one person proved everything you’d ever believed wrong?” Draco asked her as he lifted himself up to rest on his elbows.

“I guess I’d be cruel as well and take it out on that person even though they didn’t deserve it.”

“You know,” Draco began, smiling a genuine smile, “We really ought to thank Chang for doing this to us. I mean if she hadn’t gone nutters and decided to put us together on patrol we’d never be,” He paused, wanting to say something, but not wanting to freak Hermione out.

“You do realize that no one is ever going to understand us being friends don’t you?”

“Yeah, but I’m a big boy. I can make my own decisions.” He answered haughtily, flashing her his trademark smirk. “Besides who said they have to know? Don’t get me wrong, I honestly don’t care whether we keep this secret or not, but if you’d rather keep this secret due to certain ramifications then I’ll understand.”

She nodded in agreement, “I’d love for this to be public, I really would, because I feel so much closer to you than I’ve ever felt to anyone else. I’ve told you things I haven’t ever told Harry or Ron and they’re my best friends. But..” She trailed off, “Is it wrong that I want this to be you and me in our own little world for awhile?”

“Well then can it be that way?”

“Definitely. I don’t think I’m ready to let the rest of the world in either.”

“But you do understand what this means don’t you?” He was concerned that she wasn’t quite going to like what he was about to say.

“I suppose we’ll have to keep up appearances.” She sighed.

“Say a bunch of cruel things we don’t mean.”

“Hurt each other intentionally.”

“Just so that we can keep this to ourselves.” He finished.

“It’s going to be hard.” She stated, gazing into his cruel gray eyes.

“I’m game if you are.”

He blinked. That was the first time she’d ever said his name.

Hermione sat on her bed, eager to read her latest letter from Draco. Just as she was about to open it a knock sounded at her door. She quickly shoved the letter under her pillow, “Come in.”

A head of red hair popped in her doorway, “Hey Mione.”

“Ginny!” She squealed as she gave her friend a hug, “What are you doing here?”

Ginny looked around the room with obvious curiosity, “I’m here to take you to the Burrow. WE haven’t seen you or heard from you for all of June and your parents said you could spend the rest of the Holidays with us.” She smiled brightly before zooming in on a piece of paper sticking out from under Hermione’s pillow. She walked over to the bed and picked it up.

Hermione’s eyes widened as she realized what Ginny had in her hand, “Umm Ginny why don’t you let me get packed.” But it was too late. Hermione watched in horror as Ginny’s eyes widened, “I can explain.”

“I’d love to hear why you have a letter from Malfoy hidden under your pillow and you better hurry cause as soon as the boys are done playing Quidditch they’ll be on their way here, so spill.” She sat on the bed expectantly.

“Okay well see last year me and Draco ended up being put on the same patrol schedule.”

Ginny snickered, “Yeah I remember that. I thought I’d NEVER hear the end of how horrible it was for Ron to patrol with Pansy Parkinson.

“Well see me and Draco had this epic fight and then we just started talking you know?” At Ginny’s nod she continued, “That was six months ago. We’ve been talking ever since and the reason you didn’t hear from me all of June was because I was busy helping him and his mother clean out the dark magic items from their house.” Ginny looked confused and Hermione sighed, “Because Lucius is in Azkaban for life and they wanted to clean their house so I’ve been hanging out with them. I kinda just got caught up in that.”

“OoooKay. What do you think Harry and Ron are going to say about this?”

“Hopefully nothing because I need you to keep this a secret. Can you do that for me Ginny? I know I’m asking a lot but seriously they can never know. They’d never forgive me.” Hermione pleaded.

Ginny twirled her hair around her finger and sighed, “I suppose I could.” At Hermione’s obvious discomfort she smiled. “Of course I will you idiot. But you do realize that they’re really nosy and are probably going to find out eventually right?”

“Yeah but I’ll deal with it then.” She threw herself at Ginny. “Thank you thank you thank you thank you!!!” She exclaimed.

Ginny laughed and hugged her back. After awhile they broke apart and she smiled, “I’m going to go talk to your parents while you pack.” She then left the room to give Hermione some privacy to read the letter.

Hermione lay on her bed and began to eagerly read Draco’s latest letter,

Thanks for helping me and my mom clean house. We honestly didn’t think it’d take a whole month, but oh well. Mum loved having you. Because of your cheery disposition and parent sucking up skills I have had to listen to her talking nonstop about how much of an improvement you are over my other friends. Thanks for that. Just kidding. You know I’m happy you came. I still can’t believe Potter did it. But I’m glad he did. That battle at the end of last year was epic. I’m glad you aren’t in danger anymore or that you’re putting yourself in danger. I rather like having a best friend and don’t think I’d enjoy it if you died so keep yourself out of trouble eh? Hope to hear from you soon.

Hermione smiled. So she was his best friend. She smiled again. She liked the sound of that. She reached under her bed and pulled out a box. In the box lay every letter she’d ever received from Draco. She added the latest one to the pile and tied a ribbon around it. Then she got up and began to pack for the Burrow.

Malfoy Manor stood at the top of a hill It was large and domineering, giving everyone who approached it the feeling of being very insignificant, except for it’s two inhabitants. To Draco and his mother it was just home, nothing overwhelming about it. Draco flew around the manor for a second time before landing in his mother’s art room. Looking at the bright colors he smiled. This place was definitely starting to look better thanks to Narcissa and Hermione’s attentions. “MUM!” He yelled.

“IN here darling. Just reading a letter from Hermione.” Narcissa and Hermione had been writing each other since they met. Narcissa had taken an instant liking to the girl (she’d never bought into that whole pureblood crap) and they were fast becoming friends.

“Really? Was there one for me?”

“Yeah it’s sitting on the table.” She sighed, “It may be the last one for awhile though.”

Draco looked alarmed, “Is everything all right?”

“Just read your letter dear. I’m sure she’s explained everything.”

Draco pounced on the letter, tearing it open hurriedly. He quickly opened the parchment and began to read.

Thanks. I can’t wait til school starts. I hope I’m made Head Girl. I’m so nervous. I’m going to the Burrow for the rest of summer so if I don’t write please don’t hold it against me. I don’t want Ron or Harry getting suspicious. I’ll see you later.

Draco scowled and crumpled the letter up, he always knew he hated Potter and Weasel. “Well that’s just great. Mum I think I’ll go visit Blaise or something.”

Sensing her son’s distress Narcissa had an idea, “Well dear you know you could always invite her to spend the last two weeks of summer with us.” She suggested.

Draco’s face instantly brightened, “You know what? I think I’ll do that.” He hurriedly scribbled a letter and gave it to his owl hoping it’d reach Hermione without raising any suspicions.
