Chapter 21: Christmas

The next few weeks past quickly at Hogwarts and before they knew it, it was Christmas. Lily, James and Sirius were going to Potter Manor for the holidays, Remus and Alice were going with their families on holidays, Peter, to everyone’s bewilderment said he was staying at Hogwarts and Jo, much to Sirius’ disappointment, was returning home. Sirius wanted her to come to Potter Manor with them but she said her parents really wanted her to come home. This dampened Sirius’ mood slightly, but not completely. As he said, nothing could bring him down.

The Hogwarts Express left Hosmeade Station at 11:00 on the 23rd of December. The friends got their own compartment near the back of the train and settled themselves for the long journey. But for them, it wasn’t long enough. This was going to be one of the last times they took the train, as Lily pointed out.

“This is so sad,” Lily said with a sigh, looking around the compartment.

“Prongs mate, I think your girlfriend has finally lost it. What is so sad about Christmas?”

“It’s not Christmas, it’s this,” she said gesturing around the compartment.

“Oh, I am so glad you explained yourself so fully. Prongs, how do you put up with all these mind games all the time?” Sirius asked. James laughed and put his arm around Lily.

“Oh shut up Black,” Lily said. “I talking about the fact that this is one of the last times we are going to be on this train,”

Everyone looked around the compartment. It had never really hit them that this was their last year at Hogwarts, until now.

“Oh my God! You are right! I can’t believe we are really going to be leaving Hogwarts for good in a few months!” Alice cried.

“Me neither. It seems like yesterday we only got there for the first time,” James said.

“Way to bring us all down Evans. Could you have said anything more depressing?” Sirius asked her sarcastically.

Lily looked at all of them. “Do you think we will stay together, even when we leave school?”

“Of course we will! You can’t split up the Marauders! And well, two of you are dating Marauders, and Alice is your friend, so you are all kind of honorary Marauders!” Sirius said. They all laughed before Remus spoke.

“Do any of you know what you want to do when you leave Hogwarts?” he asked them all. Everyone looked thoughtful, thinking about what they would do with their life, except James and Sirius.

“Aurors!” they both said together.

“I have always wanted to be an Auror, like my parents,” James said.

“It is the coolest job ever!” said Sirius with a grin.

“I think I’d like to be an Auror too. It would be fun,” Jo said.

“Yeah, me too. I’ll do anything to stop Voldemort from hurting anyone else. So and Auror suits me,” Lily said. “What about you Alice? Where do you see yourself after Hogwarts?”

“I think I’d like to be a Healer, I like to help people,” she said.

“I think you would make a great Healer. Especially since we are all going to be Aurors, I think it would be good if there was a Healer around,” Remus said with a laugh.

“We? You mean you’re jumping on the Auror broom Moony?” James asked.

“Well, yeah. I think it would be a good thing to be,” Remus said.

“Good on you Moony! So five Aurors and a Healer! We are ready for anything now!” Sirius said with a laugh.

The journey passed quickly with them talking about what they would do after Hogwarts, funny memories from Hogwarts and the odd strange comment from Sirius. All too soon the train pulled into the station and they got off the train with the rest of the school. They said goodbye to Remus and Alice almost immediately after arriving as there parents were already waiting for them. James and Lily went off to help the younger students get back through the barrier, leaving Sirius and Jo alone.

“I’m sorry I can’t come with you for Christmas Sirius, but-”

“It’s ok, I know. I’ll see you after the holidays. It is only three weeks after all,” Sirius said.

“Yeah. Well, there’s my Dad, I have to go. Bye,” she said with a smile.

Sirius took hold of her hand. “Bye Jo. I love you,” he said before kissing her. She broke off after a few minutes and looked at her shocked. She opened her mouth to reply but her Dad came over to them.

“Are you ready to go Jo?” he asked

“Ye-yeah Dad. By-bye Sirius,” she said before her Dad steered her away.

Sirius wanted to kick himself for being so stupid. “I bet she got scared by me saying that. Why did I say it? I have NEVER said that before! Why now?”

“Because you mean it you idiot!” said the voice in her head.

Christmas morning dawned bright and covered in a sheet of white. James was woken suddenly by Sirius bursting in the door and jumping on him.

“Come on Prongs! Get up! It’s Christmas!” he shouted.

James took his glasses off his bedside table and looked at the clock. “Padfoot, it’s 6:00am!”

“Exactly! You should have been up ages ago!” Sirius shouted happily.

“Is it a custom in this house to get up before the sun even rises?” asked a voice from the door. James and Sirius looked over to see Lily standing in the door in her pyjamas.

“Yes it is! Glad you’ve caught on! Come on Prongs, even Evans is up! You have to get out of bed! There are presents to open!” Sirius shouted jumping up and down on him. Sirius loved Christmas and always got a bit hyper in the morning.

“I knew this had nothing to do with me, all you want is your present,” James said with a smile getting out of bed.

“Thank God! That is the longest it has ever taken to get you up! You must be getting old!” Sirius exclaimed.

James ignored him and walked over to Lily. “Morning!” he said putting his arm around her and giving her a kiss on the cheek.

“Morning to you too,” she said with a smile.

“Yes, yes, we know it is morning. Now lets go and open the presents!” Sirius said walking out of room with James and Lily behind him. They entered the sitting room where the Christmas tree was set up to see Mr and Mrs Potter sitting on the sofa.

“Merry Christmas!” Mrs Potter said.

“Merry Christmas!” they all said to them, sitting down on the floor. Sirius was looking at the presents under the tree with his name on them, jumping up and down with excitement.

“Oh go on and open them Padfoot before you explode,” James said with a laugh. Sirius dived forward and grabbed the closest present to him, ripping the paper off it.

“Wow Prongs! This is brilliant!” he shouted holding up a huge bag of Zonko’s merchandise. James just grinned.

“You had to get him that didn’t you?” said Lily with a laugh.

“What else?” James asked with a smile.

The morning passed with them all opening presents from one another. When all of them were opened James turned to Lily and handed her a small box. He waited until all the other presents were open because he was nervous about what she would think.

“Oh James you didn’t have t-” she said with a smile opening the box. She stopped as she saw what was in it. “Wow James! This is….it’s… is so beautiful,” she said quietly looking at it again. Inside the box was the most beautiful necklace Lily had ever see. It was in the shape of a lily. It seemed to be made of glass with shimmering pale blue streaks running through it.

“You like it?” James asked.

“James, I love it! I have never seen anything as beautiful,” Lily said looking at him.

“I have. You,” James told her. Lily leaned in and kissed him.

“Aw! Isn’t that so sweet? It makes me feel sick!” Sirius said from beside them.

“Oh leave them alone Sirius, it is so sweet!” said Mrs Potter.

The rest of the morning went very fast. Lily and Mrs Potter prepared dinner while James, Sirius and Mr Potter sat in the sitting room talking about Qudditch. At 12:00 Mrs Potter called them all in for dinner. James sat beside Lily who had put on her necklace.

“Well, Merry Christmas everyone!” Mr Potter said when they had all sat down.

“Merry Christmas!” they said before they all started eating. It was absolutely delicious. Not even the House Elves at Hogwarts could have made a better meal. They all sat there eating, talking, laughing and enjoying themselves.

“That was wonderful Mrs Potter, thank you,” Lily said when she had finished.

“Oh it wasn’t just me dear. You are an excellent cook!” Mrs Potter said.

“Yeah James, hold on to her. I need a good meal every now and again,” Mr Potter said with a smile making everyone laugh.

After dinner they all went back into the living room. James sat on one of the armchairs and pulled Lily onto his lap.

“Did you have a good Christmas?” he asked her.

“It was the best ever!” she said with a smile.

“I’m glad you enjoyed yourself,”

“Thank you for my necklace. It is so beautiful,” she told him looking down at her necklace.

“Did you look at the back of it?” James asked her.

“No, why?”

“Just turn it over,”

Lily did so and smiled at it. On back read:
“You will always be my Flower, Love James”

“It is wonderful, thank you James,” she said quietly.

“You deserve it,” he told her giving her a kiss as she settled herself against him.

The day was one of the best Lily had. She looked down at the floor where Sirius and Mr Potter where playing a game of Wizard Chess and over at Mrs Potter who was looking through a book she had received from a person at work. She was happy that she was a part of this amazing family.

Suddenly there was a crack from the kitchen and Albus Dumbledore walked into the room.

“Albus! Merry Christmas!” Mr Potter said standing up.

“Merry Christmas Harold,” Dumbledore said.

“Can I get you something to drink Albus?” Mrs Potter asked.

“No, no, I am fine. I have come to tell you all some very upsetting news,” he said quietly. Lily looked at him to see he had tears in his eyes. She knew whatever he was going to say was not going to be good.

“What is it Albus?” Mr Potter asked him.

“I am very sorry,” Dumbledore said a tear falling from behind his half-moon glasses. “But I have received news that Ms Plunkett has been killed,”
