Chapter 4
The Boy Cares

Hermione walked to the library and sat down at the table nobody sits down at. She started to think about what just happened back in the common room.

I can’t believe Draco Malfoy, Draco Malfoy, kissed me! Hermione sighed. Suddenly, Hermione heard someone come into the library. She looked to see who it was form the side of a bookshelf. It was Malfoy. Hermione didn’t want to see him so she quietly walked out of the library and went to the Gryffindor common room. Everyone was gone, and only Ginny remained in the room, probably waiting for her.

“Hermione!” Ginny said when she saw her.

“Hey,” Hermione replied, not in the mood to talk.

“So, what happened?”

“I went into the library, sat at a table, then heard him come in, didn’t feel like talking, so I quietly walked out of the library into here,” Hermione explained in one breath.

“Okay..." Ginny said.

“Yeah, that’s it,” Hermione said. “I think I need some rest.”

“Okay. Night!”

“Night,” Hermione went to the girls’ dormitory and went to bed.

Hermione woke up, got ready, and headed down to breakfast. Hermione wasn’t really hungry. She wouldn’t have even went to breakfast, but Harry and Ron are so overprotective that they’ll be pouring her with questions of why she wasn’t at breakfast later if she didn’t go now.

Hermione entered the Great Hall and sat next to Ginny.

“Hey Ginny, Harry, Ron,” Hermione greeted when she sat down.

“Oh! Hey, Hermione,” Ginny greeted.

“Hey, Hermione,” Harry said.

“He Hominee,” Ron said with his mouth full.

Hermione looked at Ron and saw him stuffing his face with food. He had a grease stain all over his mouth.

“Ron, are you ever gonna learn to not talk with your mouth full?” Hermione asked, disgusted by her friend's way of eating.

Ron swallowed his food. “Yeah, someday, but not now.”

Hermione gasped. “Oh, Merlin! He didn’t talk with his mouth full!” Hermione said sarcastically. Ron just continued stuffing his face with food.

Hermione soon finished eating breakfast(which she didn’t have a lot of because she wasn’t that hungry).

“I’m going to go to the library and read a book or something. I’ll meet up with you all later,” Hermione said.

“Okay, we’ll see you later,” Ginny said.

Hermione stood up, exited the Great Hall, and started walking to the library. She went through the many hallways and entered the quiet library. She took a book out of a shelf and went to the usual seat she sits at when she saw Malfoy in it. Hermione just decided to go to another table, so she passed him, but Malfoy grabbed her hand, tingles running up and down her arm. Hermione looked at him.

“What do you want?” Hermione asked.

He let go of her hand. “Just sit down,” Malfoy said.

Hermione sat at the seat across from Malfoy. “What?”

“About last night…”

“Yes. Why would you actually do that to me?” Hermione asked.

“I don’t know! It just…happened,” Malfoy said, running his fingers through his hair.

He looks pretty... cute when he does that. Wait, what am I thinking? This is MALFOY!

“I guess I just knew that I would feel guilty after seeing you fail all your classes and…I don’t know, I just…did it.”

“Okay, first, why are you telling me all this? And second, what’s wrong with you?”

“First, because if I don’t tell you this now, I’m gonna do something crazy later. And second... what?"

“Well, because you’re usually making fun of me, insulting me, and all that stuff. Right now, you’re out of your personality or...your character,” Hermione explained.

“If you want me to be mean, I will. It’s not that hard to change from this to mean,” Malfoy said.

“No, no, no. This is fine,” Hermione said. Hermione opened her book and started reading, not even bothering to get up from her seat.

After a few minutes, Pansy entered the library, looking for Malfoy. “Draaaakeeeeeey!” she screamed.

“Shh! This is a library, Miss Parkinson!” Madam Pince said. Pansy glared at her.

Malfoy gasped when he heard Pansy’s voice. Hermione looked at him.

“What?” Hermione asked.

“Pansy’s here!” he whispered.

“Hide under the table. She’ll kill you if she sees you sitting across from me!”

“And you care if she kills me, why?” Hermione asked confused of how he cares.

“Just do it,” Malfoy said.

Hermione sighed. “Fine.” She closed her book and slipped off her chair and under the table.

So, the boy actually cares if Pansy kills me. Odd, Hermione thought.

“Hey, Drakey!” Pansy said when she found Malfoy.

Malfoy ignored her and continued reading his book.

Pansy sat down on Malfoy's lap. “Drakey, I was thinking if we can go to Hogsmeade together today,” Pansy said.

“We can’t go to Hogsmeade on Mondays. And Pansy, I broke up with you. That means we’re not boyfriend and girlfriend anymore, we don’t go out, and we’re only friends,” Yeah right. I don’t wanna be her friend any more that I wanna be her boyfriend.

Pansy laughed, her squeaky, high, annoying laugh. “I know you’re just joking about that. Now meet me at the Entrance Hall in thirty minutes.” Pansy walked out of the library, Malfoy sighed, and Hermione rose from under the table.

“Well, you’re friend is pretty stupid,” Hermione chuckled. “Well, I have to go head down to Transfiguration.” Hermione stood up and grabbed her books.

“Me too,” Malfoy said.

Hermione sighed. “Great.” She rolled her eyes. Hermione walked out of the library and headed to Transfiguration.”

Well, she still hates me, Malfoy thought. Why do I care if Hermione hates me or not? Wait, did I just think her first name? Ugh, I gotta head down to Transfiguration.

Hermione entered the classroom and started reading the Transfiguration book(as always). In a few minutes, everyone came into the classroom. Malfoy sat next to Blaise and Harry sat next to Hermione.

“Oh, hey, Harry,” Hermione greeted. “Where’s Ron?”

“He didn’t take this class. Dunno why,” Harry shrugged.

“Oh well,” Hermione said. She closed the Transfiguration book, noticing how Professor McGonagall came in.

“Good afternoon, class,” Professor McGonagall said while she was walking to the front of the classroom. “Now today, I have arranged a pop quiz.” The class moaned as she started handing out papers. “Now, there is no need of that. If you listened and studied last time we met, then you won’t have any problem with this pop quiz. Please put your pencil down when you are finished. Begin!”

Everyone started the quiz. Hermione put her pencil down after just a couple of minutes. McGonagall collected her paper and looked impressed. Harry looked at her surprisingly.

“How did you finish so fast?” Harry whispered.

“It wasn’t that hard. Now, shush before McGonagall starts taking away house points,” Hermione whispered back.

“Mr. Zabini! That’s ten points from Slytherin for cheating off Mr. Malfoy’s paper!” Professor McGonagall yelled.

Hermione turned her back and looked at Malfoy who was smirking at Blaise. She turned back around. Odd. Usually Draco copies of Zabini’s paper, Hermione thought, not noticing that she had thought his first name. Hermione took out Hogwarts: A History and read it for the umpteenth time. After several minutes, everyone finished the pop quiz.

“Do I have everyone’s paper?” Professor McGonagall asked. The whole class nodded except for Neville. He raised his hand.

"Erm…Professor? I’m not finished yet,” Neville said, lowering his hand.

“All right, then, Neville. You will finish it today, after dinner. Be sure to be here or you fail the quiz. And I see we have run out of time. I will see you all again on Wednesday. Class dismissed,” Professor McGonagall said. Everyone walked out of the classroom. Hermione met up with Harry.

“So, how’s things going with you and Ginny?” Hermione asked.

“Everything’s going great,” Harry said.

“Hey, guys!” Ginny greeted from behind them.

Harry and Hermione turned around.

“Hey, Ginny!” Hermione greeted.

“Hey, Gin,” Harry kissed her lightly on the lips.

Hermione smiled. “Well, I see things are really going great.”

“Hey, Harry, Hermione, and Ginny!” Ron greeted while approaching them.

“Hey, Ron,” Harry greeted.

“Hey, Ron,” Hermione said.

Ginny didn't even bother to greet her brother.

“Next is free period. What do you guys wanna do?” Hermione asked.

“I gotta catch up on homework,” Ron said.

“Me too,” Harry said.

“Well, I guess it’s just you and me then, Ginny,” Hermione said.

“Yeah,” Ginny said. “We’ll see you two later. C’mon, Hermione. Let’s go to the girls’ dormitory. Lavender, Parvati, and Padma are there.” Hermione and Ginny walked to Gryffindor Tower, into the Gryffindor common room, and into the girls’ dormitory.

Lavender, Parvati, and Padma turned around.

“Oh! Hey, guys!” Parvati greeted.

“Hey, Hermione and Ginny!” Lavender greeted.

“Hey, guys! So, Hermione, did you like the dare I picked for Malfoy?” Padma asked smiling.

“Oh, yes, Padma! I absolutely loved kissing Malfoy!” Hermione said sarcastically in a girly voice. Then her face turned back to normal. “Of course not!”

Parvati and Lavender laughed.

“Well, it couldn’t have been that bad,” Parvati said. "It is Malfoy, isn't it?"

“Well, he was kind of nice to me today in the library,” Hermione said while thinking about what happened in the library.

“Explain to us, please,” Lavender said.

“Yeah, Hermione,” Ginny said. “You didn’t tell me about this.”

“That’s because I had to go to Transfiguration after I left the library,” Hermione said.

“Now…explain?” Parvati asked.

“Well, I had nothing to do, so I went to the library to read a book, as usual. I went to a shelf, got a book, and I walked to the table I usually sit at and saw Malfoy sitting at it. So, I passed by him to go to another table and he grabbed my hand. I asked him what he wanted and he told me to sit down, so I did. We talked about the dare and he said that he did it because he said he would feel guilty seeing me fail all my classes--” She got cut off by Padma.

“Malfoy? Guilty? Are you sure it’s Malfoy we’re talking about?” Padma asked.

“Yes,” Hermione laughed. “As I was saying, he said he would feel guilty seeing me fail all my classes. I found this odd to see him talking to me about this, so I asked him why he was telling me all this and asked what was wrong with him. He said that if he doesn’t tell me all this now, he would do something crazy later, and he was clueless about my second question. I told him that he’s usually mean to me, making fun of me, yeah, yeah, yeah, and all that stuff and then I told him he was like not acting like himself. Then I started reading my book, and after a few minutes, Pansy came in the library, screaming ‘Draaakeeey!’--” She got cut off by Parvati.

“Pansy? This is gonna be good,” Parvati said. They all leaned in towards Hermione.

“Anyway, then Malfoy gasped and told me to hide under the table because Pansy would kill me if she saw me sitting across from him. I asked him why he cared about Pansy killing me and he told me to just do it. So, I hid under the table. When she was gone, I came up from the table and said I had to go head to Transfiguration and he said he did too. Then we all went to Transfiguration,” Hermione explained. “Eh, my mouth hurts.”

“I’m sure it hurts. After giving a story like that!” Parvati said. “Looks like Malfoy…cares. I didn’t think it was even possible.”

“Yeah, yeah. I’ll see you three later,” Hermione said standing up. “I’m going to go for a walk.”

“See you later!” Parvati and Padma said together.

“Bye!” Lavender said.

“I’ll see you later, Hermione,” Ginny said.

Hermione walked outside and saw Malfoy sitting on the grass, leaning on a tree a few yards away. He heard the doors open and looked to see who it was. He saw no one.

Hermione quietly walked behind Malfoy. This will be a funny sight, she thought.

“Boo!” she said from behind Malfoy.

“Ah!” He got startled and jumped and stood up. He looked back and saw Hermione laughing.

“Well,” Hermione smiled. “Looks like a ‘mudblood’ just scared a ‘pureblood.’”

Malfoy just walked up to her and kissed her. Just like that.
