Chapter sixteen- The One With The Photograph- Part Two.

“Hello ladies!” Sirius greeted in his usual cheerful manner as he took a seat at the table for lunch. “And hello Wren.” He said in surprise spotting her for the first time.

She pulled a face at him. “Are you implying I’m not a lady?”

“Would I ever say that Wrennie?” He joked. “I was just surprised to see you here…what are you doing here anyway?”

Wren smiled, sitting up in her seat proudly. “Lily invited me.” Imagine, Lily Evans, the post popular girl in school asking her to lunch. “Since you never do.” She said, her eyes wide with meaning.

Sirius laughed nervously. “There is a reason for that.” He told her, reaching forward for a piece of bread.

“Don’t worry pumpkin, I haven’t revealed any of you secrets.” She told him with a wink. “But now that I think of it there was this time when he was eight, right? Now there’s this small creek down from my house and this huge hill and you know those little-“

“And that’s enough of that story Wrennie. So that transfiguration test, ladies. Thoughts?”

“’Bout what?” James asked taking a seat next to Sirius. “Hula Hoop of fire story, Wren?” He asked in amusement, Wren nodded in delight and he laughed.

“So you were saying Wren?” Holly asked innocently, leaning forward in her seat.

If it was possible Sirius turned red. “No, she is not.” He said meaningfully. “What else did you tell them?” He whined.

Wren sighed. “Nothing at all. Lily was actually telling me about her head girl duties.”

Sirius nodded eagerly. “Is that right Lily?” He said, glad to get the conversation away from him.

At the sound of her name, Lily looked up sharply. “What?” She asked slightly bewildered, ever since James had sat down she had lost track of the conversation. “I’m sorry what did you say?”

Sirius shook his head, looking between her and James. James was staring determinedly at her, challenging her to say something or at least look at him but instead she stared at her half eaten meal, biting her lip, clearly uncomfortable in this situation.

As was everyone else. So embarrassed that Sirius almost revealed the hula hoop story himself. Thankfully Wren saved him.

Noticing the discomfort she gently touched Lily’s arm. “So Lily, what are the perks of being head girl?”

Lily turned to look at her then quickly back at James. “Sorry Wren, but I have to go. Um, I have to…” Lily trailed off as she stood up, pointing in the direction of the door, feeling like her face was burning she left still conscious that his eyes were following her.

At the table all eyes turned back to James who sighed in frustration, running his hands through his hair. Sirius was utterly bewildered. “What are you doing you idiot?” Sirius cried, hitting him in the back of the head. “Don't let her walk away! Go talk to her!”

James looked up to find Sirius’ face inches from his own. “Just drop it Padfoot.” He growled, standing up too. “I have to do something.” He told them, waving goodbye. Sympathy had never been something he had liked and he was not going to stand here and let them look at him with their soft eyes.

“Okay…” Holly laughed nervously. “That was awkward.”

“That word seems to be cropping up a lot lately.”

Wren made a face, propping her head up on one hand. “So that happens a lot?”

Both Gryffindor’s nodded wearily while Wren breathed a silent ‘O’.

“I’m gonna go see if I can catch him.” Sirius told them, standing up, leaving Holly and Wren alone.

“So,” Began Holly searching for a topic they had in common. “How long have you known Sirius then?”

“Oh, well he used to live down the road to me... before he left. We were friends as kids. There weren’t too many wizards or witches around. He was the only decent person my age around. Even if he used to pick on me. It was strange I just went over there one day and Mrs Black was screaming, apparently he just left.”

Holly frowned. “I never knew that. He doesn’t talk about his family much.”

“I wouldn’t either if they were mine.”

“So you two are pretty close then?”

“You could say that. I love spending time with him and I know too many of his secrets so even if he found me annoying, he's kinda stuck with me.”

“So if you don’t mind me asking, how come you two never dated?”

“Who told you we never dated?”

“So you did?”

“Very briefly, it didn’t work out the best. I just wasn’t what he wanted…” She said with a sad little laugh. “He was exactly what I wanted but some people are just better off as friends I guess…”

“So does that mean you still…” Holly asked, hiding her shock well. She had thought James had told her that they were just friends but then they were standing here arms around each other and suddenly she was finding it hard to believe him when he said she was no threat.

Wren laughed, that little twitter that suited her so well. “Yeah, but I know he doesn’t see me that way. I wanted to hate you when I first met you, you know.”

Holly was stunned, “Why for?”

“I was jealous. I saw the way he looked at you. Then he told me how he loves you-”

“Excuse me?”

Wren laughed again. “I know pretty immature of me but-“

“No not that.”

Wren frowned. “What that he loved you? You knew that didn’t you?...Holly?” She asked cautiously as Holly stood up without saying anything.

Completely forgetting Wren sitting alone at the Gryffindor table she headed outside where the weather was becoming increasing warm.

She had barely made it out the door when Sirius caught up with her, grabbing her arm gently and swinging her around to face him.

“What was that about?” He asked, having seen Holly run from the great hall. She was so distracted that she had run straight passed him.

Holly stared up at him, her face etched with pain. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Tell you what?”

Holly shook her head wildly, pulling her arm free. “I…That – that you and Wren dated?”

Sirius’ eyes widened. “What does that have to do with anything? It was two years ago and so brief. It was over before it started.”

“Then why did she tell me she still has feelings for you?”

“She told you that? Sirius asked in bewilderment, struggling to find a link in all of this. ”Holly you aren’t jealous of Wren are you?”

“Why would I be jealous of that skinny little brainless Barbie?”

Sirius had no answer to that. It practically answered itself. “Holly what’s going on?”

“What do you mean what's going on? I just don’t like the way she’s always hanging around you and always – ”

“Holly!” Sirius interrupted. “Really what is this about? See I’m confused and if I didn’t know better I would think you were feeling a little bit threatened by Wrennie-kins which means you lied.”

Holly feigned innocence. “I lied?”

Sirius smirked. “You lied. The day I ask what I meant to you, you lied.”

“I did not!”

Sirius simply rolled his eyes, girls were so stupid sometimes “Holly…”

“Fine I lied. You said ‘what are we doing’ and I lied. I never had a date for Valentines. And it was more than just a game.” She added quietly.

“Why?” He asked softly.

“Why didn’t I have a date?” Holly joked, he looked at her. Okay. Obviously not the time for jokes… “I don’t know. It was easier at the time.” She said meekly. This conversation was way too truthful for her liking.

“Easier than what?” He asked. “Holly?” He asked again when she didn’t answer.

She looked up at him with watery eyes. “Admitting what you meant to me…”

Sirius looked at her. This was beyond strange. “Dare I say why again? If you had of told me then – “

“You don’t get it do you?! I’m just plain Holly! I didn’t want to become another of Sirius Blacks girlfriends. I couldn’t! Not one of those stupid barbies like Miranda or Mona. Or even Wren! The girl is smart but so dumb in other ways...”

“I never went out with Miranda or Mona.”

“You went out with Miranda in third year,” Holly said quietly, looking at the ground.

Sirius thought for a moment before laughing to himself, “Oh yeah I did too.” Holly groaned and began to walk away, but Sirius grabbed her arm once again. “Holly…”

Holly slowly turned to face him, “I just didn’t want to become one of them.”

“And now?”

“I still don't want to be one of them. I don’t want to be some girl you date for a month then discard. I don’t think I could handle that.”

“What if I told you you would never be someone like that?”

“I don’t know if I could believe you.” Holly said looking away.

(A/N: Five Years From Now by Mercury 4)
Holly: Tell me what you are;
tell me who you'll be
When the summers gone
and all you'll ever need to fall
What you gonna do, what you gonna do

Will it be someone else’s game you're playing?
What is that you need, tell me about your dream
Tell me when your childish fantasies have blown away
Who's to say, you and I are here to stay

Tell me where you be a few years from now
Will you recognise my face in a crowd?
Tell me where you be a few years from now
Will you love me, still want me
Tell me about the guy you wanna be
Will there be a place in your heart for me
Tell me where you be a few years from now
Will you love me, still want me
Say you will,

say you will

Sirius: Holding you tonight, movin' in the dark
Time is moving faster then my world is turning
So you want to know, what is on my mind
But the future seems as distant
As the sun that's burning bright
Could it be that you, are frighted that I might
Give it all away for souvenirs of yesterday
So Who's to say and I are here to stay?

Ask me where I’ll be a few years from now
Will I recognise your face in a crowd?
Tell you where I’ll be a few years from now
I’ll still love you, still want you
So tell me about the girl you wanna be
Is there still a place in your heart for me
Tell me where you wanna be years from now
Will you love me, still want me
Say you will

Holly: Say five winters have came and gone
Now forever don't seem to long
Will you wanna reach out for me?
Or will I be your memory
Coz everything that your not now
I know that I got to stop now
You got to tell me what's up now

Tell me where you be a few years from now
Will you recognise my face in a crowd?
Tell me where you be a few years from now
Will you love me, still want me
Tell me about the guy you wanna be
Will there be a place in your heart for me
tell me where you be a few years from now
Will you love me, still want me?”

“Holly you are an idiot.”

“That’s not what I want to hear right now.”

Sirius smiled, stepping closer to take her hand, “Okay, how about, I don’t know where the future will take us but as long as you are willing I want to give this real chance. A completely serious relationship. Holly, be my girlfriend?” He asked sincerely, watching her closely.

Holly smiled, “Now that is exactly what I wanted to hear.”

Lily had left the great hall and headed for her refuge, the library. Almost an hour later she had wearily dragged herself back up to her dorm, thinking at the moment sleep would be the best thing to cure her conscience. All through those couple of minutes he had felt those eye on her, begging her to say something but she couldn’t. and as much as she pretended everything was alright to her friends, that he had effect on her, it was a lie. And the chirpy, peachy-keen everything-is-a-okay act was getting old fast. Very fast.

Praying for a empty dorm room she pushed the door open, sighing in relief at the sight of the well made beds and tidy trunks but most of all the absence of her friends.

She walked to her bed frowning at the brown paper package that sat in the middle. Her frown only deepened at she saw her name scrawled messily in the corner. She would recognise that handwriting anywhere.

With trepidation she carefully unwrapped the package, mixed emotions flooding her as the tatty cover of her diary appeared.

James had had her diary.

Had he read it?

Lily nervously flicked through the pages desperately trying to remember what she had written so long ago. What had he discovered about her?

Lily stopped flicking when the book opened to the photo. With shaking hands she pulled it out noticing writing on the back.

Lily, It read, I told you once I would get this back but obviously this photo means something to you too. Talk to me. Please. I can't stand not knowing.
-Love James

A wave of guilt washed over her as she quickly read the scribbly writing. Falling back on her bed she let the photo fall the ground, the final words that made her ache with misery repeating in her head.
