“Harry! Come on! We’re going to be late if you don’t wake up!”

Harry rolled over and grunted, but made no attempt to get out of bed. He was still tired from the night before. Ron, George, and Bill had taken him out for his birthday, and they spent most of the night drinking.

Ginny yelled again for Harry, but when she still didn’t get a response, she walked into the bathroom and closed the door. She flicked her wand and a pregnancy test potion appeared out of thin air. She followed the directions without looking at them first; she had done this so many times before. She waited five minutes and got up off the toilet to check. She saw the potion had turned green for negative, let out a sigh, and held back her tears. Each negative was just as hard to endure as the previous one. It never got easier. She threw away the test, covered it with some tissues, and walked out, bumping into Harry on her way out.

“Are you okay?” he asked.

“Yeah, I’m fine,” she answered and kept walking. “Happy Birthday!” she called, forcing her voice to sound happy.

Today was his actual birthday, and he was 28. Ginny would wait a little while until she told him; she didn’t want to ruin his birthday.

Harry showered as Ginny did her hair and make-up. They were getting ready to have a birthday lunch for Harry at Mr. and Mrs. Weasley’s house. When they were finally ready, they apparated over and were greeted with the wonderful noise of all the Weasleys talking, laughing, and playing. Everyone was there. Mrs. Weasley, Yanna, Fluer and Hermione were in the kitchen drinking tea. Angelina was feeding Andrew as she talked passionately to Alicia about the Tornados. Bill, Fred, and George were playing pool with the table Mr. Weasley had gotten as present from his co-workers; his passion for Muggle articles had not dimmed. He and Ron and Charlie were watching Emily, Michelle, Michael, and Max play a pretend Quidditch match while Joshua, Loren, Kristi and Tyler were playing Exploding Snap. Harry joined the audience to the “Quidditch match” and Ginny went to play pool with her brothers. The entire family was together, which was a present in Harry’s eyes. After and hour or so of hanging out and having fun, Hermione and Ron called for everyone’s attention.

“I have some exciting news to share with all of you,” she said, smiling.

“Oh my gosh Hermione,” Alicia yelled excitedly. “Did you get the job?”

“Actually, yes, I did,” she said. Hermione applied for a job a week ago to help excavate the ancient Egyptian city discovered in the Sahara. She had become a Wizard archeologist. She studied Magical ancient runes. “But,” she interrupted the congratulations, “It seemed silly to take the job when I would need to quit in a few months.”

The puzzled looks must have been Ron’s cue to speak because a few moments later he yelled, “We’re going to have another baby!” The room filled with excitement as everyone got up to congratulate Hermione and Ron. Harry looked at Ginny, who hadn’t moved. Her expression was a combination of shock, jealousy, and grief. Andrew’s birth was particularly hard for her, and now she would have to face three more new babies in the next six months or so. Harry’s heart ached for her, but he went up to congratulate Ron and his wife.

Hermione said, “Ginny? Are you okay?”

Her infertility was no secret, and everyone, realizing what she must be feeling, looked over at her with sympathy and pity.

After a few seconds, Ginny said, “Of course I am!” with forced enthusiasm and walked over to hug Hermione. “I’m so happy for you!” she said to them.

“I know this will happen for you,” Hermione whispered.

“Thanks,” Ginny replied. Now that the attention was off of her, she walked into the kitchen and made herself some hard lemonade. Harry saw her and said, “Gin, shouldn’t you wait?”

“Why?” she asked. “It’s already past 3:00”

“No, I mean, shouldn’t you wait until you take the test? You could be pregnant.”
Everyone’s attention turned to Ginny again and she forced herself to reply.

“Well, I actually took the test this morning, so I can drink whatever I want because I’m not pregnant. Thank-you, by the way, for bringing it to everyone’s attention.”

She was holding back tears now, and was pretty sure everyone could tell.

“Gin, I-” Harry began, but she cut him off.

“Don’t. It’s bad enough I can’t have a baby, now add the fact my entire family, all of whom have not trouble doing so, know every detail about it. The one thing I should be able to do, just because I’m a woman, I can’t seem to get right after years of trying.”

She was now crying and when she realized everybody was staring at her, she apparated home. She ran to her room, slammed the door, and fell on the bed. She covered her face and heard Harry open the door after a gentle knock.

“Gin?” he said softly. She didn’t respond. He said again, “Gin?”

After a few moments, she whispered, “I’m so sorry I ruined your birthday.”

“Oh Ginny, don’t worry. I only care that you are happy.”

She looked at him and began to cry again. He walked over the bed and sat down next to her. He pulled her into his arms and tried to comfort her.

“Ginny?” Harry said.

“Yeah?” she said in a sad voice.

“I can’t stand to see you go through this every month. It breaks my heart to see you this miserable. I think that…” he paused, but only for a second. “I think that it might not be worth it.”

Ginny stopped crying and sat up next to him. She looked at him with her puffy, red eyes.

“Are you saying you want to stop trying?”

“I’m saying that I think we should wait a little while, just so we can focus on other things for a change. We can’t let this run our lives Gin.”

She knew he was right, and after all, it would only be for a little while. She nodded silently which Harry took as an agreement. Ginny rested her head on his shoulder and gently drifted off to sleep.
