Chapter Eighteen

I began getting ready for the dance. I quickly showered then charmed my hair to be pinned up in spiral curls. I did my make up with thin black eyeliner and mascara and matching pink lip-gloss and eye shadow. I looked at my dress hanging up. It was a light pink strapless dress. A white silk ribbon went across the top inch, matching the simple beaded pearl design on the dress. I put it on then realized I needed help lacing and tying up the back. I bit my lip hoping Draco was still around. I went out to the common room to see him wandering around in only his dress pants and shoes, no shirt.

"Malfoy, can you lace up my dress?" I asked. He jumped when he heard my voice and turned to me, his mouth falling slightly open. I turned around as he walked over and he laced up my dress. I was amazed at how light his fingers were and shivered as he ran his fingertips over my back. He grabbed my shoulders and turned me around.

"Wow Granger, you actually look like a girl." He smirked, looking me up and down.

I smirked and looked at Hermione. Her dress was tight around her chest and waist but then began to poof out at her hips. The light color of the dress made her skin look a soft olive color. The little bit of black makeup made her brown eyes seems even deeper and more soulful. I saw her eyes carefully scan over my chest and abs; I smirked again.

"You do have a boyfriend, Granger." I reminded her.

"I know." She stated smirking, "I was just thinking of how much better he looks than you."

I laughed. "Whatever you want to think," I said walking into my room to finish dressing.

I went to my room and got my mask. It was light pink like my dress with the same beaded pearl design. I said the incarnation to conceal my identity, changing my hair and eye color, and the spell to keep my mask on until midnight without string. At 7:00 I left to go to the great hall. I waited for Ron until 7:30, when he still hadn't shown, I went into the dance anyway. I smiled, seeing everyone dance together reminded me of the clubs in America. I went to the middle of the dance floor and began dancing with a boy who had black spiked hair and the deepest chocolate brown eyes I had ever seen. I put my arms around his neck as he pulled me closer, our bodies moving to the fast pace of the song. We locked eyes and silently agreed we would be each others' dance partner for the rest of the night. I wasn't complaining though, he was a good dancer- seeming to know my moves as soon as I did and know when to move with me. Before I knew it, it was nearly midnight and it was the last dance. My partner pulled me in for the slow dance, but kept me far enough away to not feel uncomfortable. I then realized as the song ended that I was thirsty from dancing the whole night and went to get water. At midnight I watched as everyone changed back into themselves. I laughed, seeing my black haired, brown-eyed dance partner slowly form into Draco.

"Of course" I sighed, looking around for Ron. I found him off in the corner, Pansy sitting in his lap, snogging his brains out.

I walked over and smiled sweetly at them. "Looks fun, thanks Ron, I love you too." I turned from the scene, slowly losing control of my cool façade. Kicking off my shoes I began running as fast as my feet would carry me to my common room. Draco, now being able to read my emotions like a book, followed right behind me, calling after me. I quickly slammed the portrait behind me and fell onto the couch in a fit of sobs. I heard someone enter the portrait.

"Go away." I choked out. They didn't say anything. Suddenly I felt someone lift me up so I was standing then pulled me tightly against him. "Draco," I whispered.

He picked me up and carried me to his room. He muttered a spell, changing me from my dress into a shirt and boxers of his. He tucked me into his bed then changed from his tux into a pair of sweatpants. He grabbed and extra pillow from his bed and conjured up a blanket and some cushions to sleep on the floor. I cried myself to sleep only to awake the next morning with sore eyes and a horrible headache. I looked at the light shining in and wished it would never be sunny again. I reached for my wand to close the blinds but soon noticed it wasn't beside my bed on the table. I opened my eyes more to reveal I was in Draco's room, in his clothes. I searched around for him then sighed when I saw him still asleep on the floor next to me. Still feeling quite tired and confused, I fell back into my deep sleep. I awoke again to see the room was pitch black. I wrapped his comforter around me and walked out into the common room to see Draco reading on the couch by the fire.

"She wakes," He teased.

I glared at him without saying anything. "Did you slip me deep sleep potion?" I asked, remembering my deep dreamless sleep.

"Only like, two drops, didn't want you dreaming and upsetting yourself." He said watching me cautiously. I sat on the couch next to him.

"I feel like I flew into a wall." I mumbled.

"You kind of look like you did." Draco said smirking playfully. He slipped his arm around my waist and I leaned onto his shoulder.

"So," He said casually, "You want me to hex the Weasel?"

I shook my head 'no' feeling tears well up in my eyes. Suddenly there was pounding at the door. I sighed. Draco got up and looked at me.

"Any rules as to who can or can't come in?" He asked curiously.

"I don't even care anymore." I said sighing, and laying on the couch.

He walked over and opened the door. I saw a bit of red hair and knew it was Ron.

"I need to see Hermione." He said frantically, trying to get around Draco.

"No," Draco said simply, not moving.

"What? Did she tell you not to let me in?" Ron questioned, getting annoyed.

"Nope, I just don't want you talking to her." Draco stated. I could hear the smirk in his voice.

"Oh sod off Malfoy." Ron said attempting to push passed Draco.

"Don't think so." Draco said before forcefully shoving Ron out of the doorway and slamming the portrait in his face. Draco walked over to me and I smiled weakly at him. I could feel my tears holding back, threatening to break free without warning. I sniffled which caused them all to slide quickly down my cheeks. Draco softly wiped my tears away, not saying anything. After I stopped crying Draco tightly wrapped his arms around me. A memory flashed into my mind.

"You know that night I slept out here a few weeks ago?" I asked him.

"Yeah," He said sourly. "That was the night before Pansy told me she was pregnant."

"What did you ever do about that anyway?" I asked curiously.

"Put a hex on her so that the next time she shags someone, the anti-pregnancy charm will fail." He said smirking.

"Isn't that a little much?" I asked.

"I honestly don't think it is enough." He said, "I mean, removing the charm doesn't necessarily mean she'll get pregnant, and Merlin, Hermione, I almost married her. I should've done more."

We sat there in silence for a few minutes.

"So what were you saying about that night?" Draco asked, getting me to continue my story.

"I had this dream that I was sleeping in someone's arms. And they made me feel safe like I do in yours." I told him.

"That wasn't a dream. I slept with you that night." Draco said sheepishly.

I looked at him in awe.

"I couldn't help it. You looked so inviting, all alone, shivering." He told me. I got up and sat in a chair on the opposite side of the room.

"Oh don't even tell me you're mad." He said. When I didn't answer he sighed dramatically, "Look, I didn't see the big deal, we've slept together before, you didn't have a boyfriend or anything and you said you feel protected in my arms." He defended himself.

"But you did it without my knowledge or permission." I stated sternly.

"You were shivering so I went to lay with you until the warming spell started to work and when I went to leave you pulled me closer, so, I thought that meant I could stay." He said.

"How do I know you're not lying?" I asked.

"Seems like you're just going to have to trust me," Draco said smirking slightly.

"Why do you always say that?" I asked quietly. I felt Draco walk up close to me.

"Because you always seem to question whether or not you should trust me," He said softly pulling my hair away from my face and neck. I tilted my head back to look at him and he smiled.

"I trust you." I whispered.

"You always say that." He told me.

"This time I mean it. From now on I will trust whatever you say or do." I stated honestly. But suddenly I had the saying 'fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.' Repeating through my mind and I was beginning to question how much of my trust he deserved after all these years and everything we've gone through.
