CWM 9 Christmas break was flying by and before anyone knew it, Christmas Eve was here and the house was full of red hair. The entire Weasley clan showed up carrying many gifts and wearing large smiles. Hermione didn’t know that the Weasley’s, Potters, Lupins and Sirius were that great of friends, but apparently due to their children, and the Order, they were.

“Oh Hermione dear,” Mrs Weasley said as she spotted her, “I couldn’t imagine what you’re going through. You alright?” She finished, pulling her into a hug.

“Er, yeah.” Hermione lied through Mrs Weasleys hair.

“Rafe dear, you’re looking so much like your father. But where’s your mother? Don’t tell me she’s working late on Christmas Eve!”

“I’m afraid so.” Remus cut in gloomily. “She’ll arrive around 11.”

“Well we’ll stay here to wish Jenna a Happy Christmas as well.” Mr Weasley added.

Hermione loved every minute that the Weasley’s were there. They were just as sweet as she remembered and Ron actually cheered up the solemn Rafe. Gracie and Holly seemed to enjoy Ginny’s company better then having Hermione there. Harry however became back to his bitter self, clearly not impressed by “unworthy” people in his house. Although his was very moody to everyone who remotely came near him, he developed a liking to having Hermione’s company. The entire visit so far by the Weasleys, Harry has been sitting next to Hermione, engaging in conversation just with her. At 11 o clock, precisely, Jenna came walking through the door and was met by cheers by the whole house (save for Harry and an awkward feeling Hermione).

“Happy almost Christmas everyone!” Jenna said, entering the living room, giving Remus a quick kiss. “Sorry for working so late. I couldn’t imagine—“ Jenna stopped dead in her tracks. “Hermione?”

As if on cue, everyone in the living room turned their gaze towards Hermione. Not knowing what to say, she just nodded awkwardly and stood up and smiled at her.

“Oh my word, you’re exactly how I remembered you!” Jenna said before pulling Hermione into the tightest hug possible.

“Well er…I haven’t aged since the last time you saw me.” She answered, trying to keep it as least sarcastic as possible.

Everyone, besides Sirius, missed the sarcasm and went on with the celebrations. At this point the so-called cider the adults were drinking was clearly spiked with something. Everyone was red in the face, clearly not a rosy festive glow, made evident by the constant hiccups from Lily. Presents were being passed around and gift wrap was flying in each direction. A tradition in these families Christmas’ was to each open one gift on the Eve of Christmas. Everyone chose to open up the Weasley gifts, clearly knowing what the parcel contained. One at a time they each pulled out a knitted sweater, in an abundance of colours. Ron with his usual maroon sweater, Ginny had a purple one, Rafe with a blue one and Harry with a plain black one. His however, did not have his initial on the front or a golden snitch, not even the Gryffindor colours. Hermione frowned as Harry tried to hide his disappointment. A round of Thank You’s were made to Mrs Weasley for her hard work.

“I like the plain black.” Hermione said, trying to cheer him up.

He was just about to say something but Ron overheard her and spoke instead.

“Yeah she was going to knit the Dark Mark on your sweater, but she didn’t want to get arrested.” Ron said, in an angry tone.

“Very nice Ron!” Hermione shot back before glaring at him with all her might.

Well after midnight and well after their fair share of drinks, Mr and Mrs Weasley flooed back home and left the Potters, Lupins and Sirius with a house full of teenagers. Hermione laid in bed while the Potter twins were gossiping with Ginny on the top bunk in their room. Harry now had to share his room with Rafe and Ron who no doubt didn’t respect that it was in fact Harry’s space.

“I’m going to get a glass of water.” Hermione muttered before leaving her room.

She walked down the hall and knocked softly on Harry’s door. Rafe answered and gave her a half smile. Harry stepped in front of him, blocking all view and smiled at her.

“I’m not really tired. You want to grab a glass of water with me?” Hermione asked him quietly.

“Sure.” Harry answered, as Rafe scowled in their direction (Ron was passed out on the floor).

They both walked down to the kitchen and sat around the island on a couple of bar stools, sipping on a glass of water.

“Are you enjoying your Christmas break so far?” Harry asked quietly, breaking the silence.

“Yeah, it’s been fun…Okay it’s been awkward and I feel out of place.” Hermione burst out.

“I know what you mean. It’s always awkward in this house with everybody. Mom and Dad are too busy trying to even look at me and my sisters have each other and everyone else in this house would rather eat frog guts then even glance in my direction.”

“That’s not true Harry. You see, I’m not really a big fan of frog guts.” Hermione said, sarcastically.

Harry laughed quietly and looked up at her. “Why are you nice to me? I was never even civil to you before you came back.”

“Well maybe that’s what you remember, but I remember something quite different. Before I went back, I remember me, you and Ron being the best of friends. So I have faith that you’ll change.”

“Why do you have faith in me but no one else does?”

“Because someone should, Harry.”

There was an awkward silence until Harry spoke.

“I think I’m going to head up to bed now. I’m getting a bit sleepy. You coming?”

“No, I might stay up for another minute or two.” She said, walking with him over to the door frame.

“Alright then. See you in the morning.” Harry said, turning to walk up the stairs. “Oh, Hermione?”

“Mistle Toe. “ Harry said, pointing above her head.

She looked up and saw the strange little green leafed plant hanging above her head. She blushed and looked at him, casting him a weak smile. He leaned in and gently kissed her on the lips and pulled away and muttered “goodnight” before going up the stairs. Hermione stood there in shock and licked her lips subconsciously, not knowing if that really happened or not. She made her way into the living room to find someone curled up on the couch, holding a piece of paper and an empty bottle of bourbon. She got closer to see Sirius in his drunken sleep. She quietly and carefully removed the bottle and placed it on the coffee table and slipped the piece of paper out of his other hand. Her nosey side got the best of her and she turned it over and gasped. It wasn’t a paper, but the picture that they took in Hogsmeade when Hermione was back in their time at school. She stared at the picture as tears filled up in her eyes. Young Sirius picked up the joyful Hermione and spun her around, kissing her on the cheek, before falling to the ground with her. She laughed to herself and placed it down on the table before picking up a blanket from the back of the couch and throwing it over him gently. She smiled at his incapable boyish self and went up to bed.

The next morning Hermione was woken up by smell of maple and bacon. Her stomach rumbled as she breathed in the scent of a home cooked meal. She glanced over to bunk beds to find them empty. She then turned her head to Ginny’s bed that Lily conjured up for her to find it empty with the covers askew. She slowly got up out of bed and tamed her frizzy hair before throwing on a house coat and walking down the stairs. She heard laughter as she walked into the kitchen and smiled to herself as she looked up at the mistle toe.

“Good morning!” Lily said brightly. “Happy Christmas, love!” She finished before running over and giving her a big hug.

“Morning. Happy Christmas everyone.” Hermione said politely.”

“We’ve been waiting for you to open presents!” Holly said, impatiently. “So hurry your butt over here!”

Hermione laughed and sat down next to the Christmas tree and passed out her gifts she got for everyone. They were small gifts, mainly for a thank you gift for their hospitality. She however gave all the kids “Ditchaquills”, which were quills that corrected your spelling mistakes by nagging at you until you made the correction.

“Try them out, they’re fantastic!” Hermione beamed.

Ron laughed and wrote the word “Kristmas” on the back of a piece of wrapping paper. He jumped when the quill yelled at him.

“Were you born yesterday? It’s C-h-r-i-s-t-m-a-s you fool!” The quill shouted.

Everyone went silent in the room but began laughing as soon as the novelty of the item sank in.

“Er, you can change the volume and the harshness of the tone of voice as well.” Hermione said, getting embarrassed.

“I love it! Thanks Hermione.” Rafe said with a smile.

“Any quill that will yell at my brother is the best quill I’ve ever seen!” Ginny said with a shove to Ron’s ribs.

The present exchange was long but exciting. The best reaction was Lily when Harry gave her the necklace. She broke down in tears and hugged Harry so tight; Hermione thought his eyes would pop out.

“Okay Mom I get the point, you like it.”

The rest of the day went smoothly and by the end of Christmas vacation, Hermione thought she would have to go up a size in pants. She wondered how the Potter family weren’t 300 lbs each with all that great cooking. Hermione stood in the twins’ room and double checked to make sure she had everything. She turned around to leave but Sirius was in the door way blocking her exit.

“Can you tell me something?” He said quietly.

“Sure.” She answered, fiddling with the handle of her suitcase.

“Should I move on?”

“What are you talking about?” She asked with a strange expression.

“Should I be searching for a wife? I don’t want to die alone, Hermione. Or is my life going to change when you enter your seventh year? I need to know now.”

As if she was planning this answer for some time, she spoke right away.

“I’ll come back for you. I promise.” She said, before walking by him and downstairs to meet everyone.
