Chapter 19 Crying Lullabies

The blue sky paraded above them, not a single cloud covered it. The breeze was gentle and refreshing, the green grass stood out boldly against the sky. Birds went about their day happily, the world went about their day normally. But for a few people, they knew their world would never be the same.

The whole school had gathered to see him brought to peace. His whole family was there, including their friends. Hogwarts was in mourning; for Ronald Weasley. Hermione waited in a room to one side. Kalisha stood by the door, waiting silently. Hermione looked in a long mirror. She wore a long black dress, detailed in lace. She wore a diamond necklace around her dainty neck. Tears fell from her brown eyes, they rolled down her cheeks softly. She made no attempt to brush them away. It wasn’t supposed to be like this. They had always said that they would make it through, right till the end.

The Golden Trio had been broken. Kalisha stepped forward and put an arm around Hermione.

“Mione,” she whispered, barely audible, “It’s okay. Everything will be okay.”

Hermione turned to look at her friend. She looked into her blue eyes. She to had begun to cry, she wasn’t even sure why herself. She put her forehead against Hermione’s. They both closed their eyes. Hermione took a deep breath.

“Come on. We should go out there.” she said lightly. Kalisha nodded and took Hermione’s hands.

“It’s gonna be okay.” she repeated. Hermione smiled sadly through her tears. She wanted to believe her friend, she really did. She sighed and let go of Kalisha’s soft hands. She turned towards the oak doors and took hold of the cold iron handles. She swallowed thickly and turned them to open.

She looked around. She saw so many familiar faces, but yet she didn’t actually register who they were. She saw the whole of The Order, all of the teachers and professors, everyone who ever knew Ron had turned up today. It made her happy yet sad at the same time, that so many people wanted to wish him well.

Her eyes twinkled softly in the sunlight, searching the crowds for him. She saw him at the back of the crowds, alone. He was looking off into the distance, into nothing. Hermione stepped through the guests carefully, not wanting any attention. She wound her way through and eventually got to where he was. She reached up and out a hand on his shoulder. She stepped to the side of him and looked out onto the horizon. They stayed silent for a while, both deep in thought.

“You know, I never thought it would end like this.” Hermione said quietly. Harry looked down at her, she was looking straight up into his green eyes.

“Neither did I…” he muttered. He looked straight ahead again. Hermione continued to look up at him.

“Mistakes are choices, Harry. You choose to do something, and it goes wrong. Everyone makes them. It just so happens that the worst possible fault dawned onto us. He would want us to be happy.” Hermione spoke wisely and slowly.

Harry took her hand in his.

“Come on. Let him rest in peace once and for all.” Harry said softly. Hermione nodded and they made their way back to the front. Kalisha stood waiting with Draco by her side. Draco smiled sadly at Hermione, his eyes sad and lonely. Hermione saw Mrs Weasley crying into Mr Weasley. Fred and George stood solemnly side by side. Charlie and Bill both looked as if holding back tears. It dawned on Hermione that they had also lost Ginny. Her heart stung with pain when she thought about her. She couldn’t help but think it was partially her fault. She was her best friend, she should have noticed, she should have helped.

Dumbledore stood on a stage at the front. His blue eyes had lost their twinkle, and his face was grim and grave. No one blamed him. He had to do what he did, otherwise who knows what may have happened. The whole school had arrived to pay their respects, the girls were crying softly whilst the boys swallowed and looked on in sadness. He took a deep breath, and began to speak. Harry squeezed Hermione’s hand gently and left with Draco.

“We are gathered here today at the expense of Ron Weasley. His life was cruelly taken from us, I wish him the best. In our life we will make choices. We will make mistakes. We will never forget him, he will live on in our hearts and dreams. Ron Weasley, rest in peace.”

The crowds erupted with cheers and applause. The music began to play, the aisle in the middle was cleared. Harry, Draco, Bill, Charlie, Fred and George were all carrying the black coffin towards the front. Hermione stood with Kalisha, they both held back the tears. The wind blew around them and the green leaves flew from the floor. Dumbledore moved from the stage, Hermione had to speak next. She took a deep breath and stepped up.

“Ron was one of my best friends. I’ve realised that my life will never be the same without him. The times we’ve laughed, the times we’ve cried, everything we’ve been through, I’ll never forget. I ask myself, why him? But in the end, I know, everything happens for a reason, and sometimes we’ll never know. Ron, I love you so much, I hope you knew that.”

With that, she left the stage. She left the ceremony. She entered the reception room and headed to the fire place.br />

“Day is done,
Gone the sun,
From the lake, from the hills, from the sky.
All is well, safely rest,
Goodbye, Ron, I'll never forget you.”
she rehearsed quietly.

She took a handful of floo powder and one last deep breath.

“Hogwarts castle!” she said, and she was engulfed in green flames.

Harry watched Hermione silently. He was so in love with her he couldn’t get over it. He loved the way she laughed, he loved the way she cried, he loved the way she shouted, he loved every thing about her. She was so beautiful, there were no words to explain it. In his eyes, she was an angel. His guardian angel. This was the first day of the rest of their lives.

A/N: I hope you all liked that as much as I enjoyed writing it. I know it’s short, but I didn’t want this chapter to drag on and on.
