Summary:

This story is about Reese Wood, the daughter of Katie Bell and Oliver Wood, as her and her friends, including James Potter, begin their 5th year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and the aftermath of the last war finally catches up to the wizarding world.

Chapter 1: the beginning of something great
[Printer Friendly Version of This Chapter]

Reese Wood groaned from under the covers. Frustrated, she clamped the pillow over her ears, attempting to shut out the rather annoying tapping sound coming from the window. Giving up on another ten minutes of sleep, she sat up in her bed and pushed her light brown hair out of her face. Her bright blue eyes looked towards the wooden clock on the wall. 7:18, it read.

“It’s too early for this,” she muttered under her breath as she staggered across the room and unclamped the window. A jet black owl was staring back at her, carrying 3 letters in its beak. It almost looked surprised that the teenager had actually gotten out of bed to let him in.

“I ought to just leave it open, Irick,” she said quietly, speaking to the owl “But it was hot last night.” She took the letters as the owl flew across the room into a metal cage. The first letter was from her best friend, Max.

Reese,

I’ll be there on the 29th then. I’m very excited to see you and the whole lot. Summer is extremely boring in the muggle world. I can’t believe it's already our 5th year! Thanks for the help with the potions essay, and i'll see you in London. Also, tell Euen I said Hello.

Max

Reese chuckled, Max had a bit of a crush on her twin brother, Euen. As if on cue, Euen yelled from the next room,

“Reese, did I get any mail?”

She took one of the letters and walked into Euen’s room.

“You need to get yourself a new owl, it's getting irritating” Reese said, throwing the letter at her brother.

“No ‘Good Morning dear brother’ for me, huh? He said, running his fingers through his long curly brown hair.

“Get a haircut” she responded, and headed to the kitchen, opening the second letter addressed to her.

“That your Hogwarts letter sweetie?” Her mother asked from behind the counter.

“Yep,” she said “ only a few extra books, and my robes still fit”

“Can’t say the same for your brother though” her mother said “he had to have grown another foot just this summer,”

“Are you talking about me?” Said a small boy as he entered the kitchen. Unlike his older brother, his brown hair was buzzed short.

“Sure, lets go with that” said Reese, eyeing her mother.

“Mum, can I go to Hogwarts with Reesie and Euen this year?” Reeses mother eyed her and looked towards the small boy.

“Not yet this year, Parker, but next year, you’ll be eleven, and you’ll get a wand and books and a trunk and you’ll get to come to Hogwarts with me and Euen” Reese said.

“Really?!” Said Parker excitedly

“Really” said his mother “Your fathers off at practice, Reese, but he’ll be back in time so we can all fly together to London.

“Okay” Reese said.

Reese wrote Max a response, and packed all of the school books and robes she needed for the upcoming school year in her trunk. She then went outside to fly around and practice some more seeking before dinner. Reese had always been a chaser, like her mother and Euen, but had picked up seeking that summer, and was excited to try out for the position in the upcoming season. Another one of her friends, James was also a chaser.

She threw on a Gryffindor Quidditch crewneck and a pair of pants and headed to the living room with her trunk, owl and broomstick, the Bullet. It was one of the newest brooms out there, with better turning abilities than the Firebolt 3001. Her father had just walked in the front door so she walked over to welcome him home.

“Hey Reesie,” he said as he wrapped his arm around her and kissed the top of her head. “Good day?” He asked

“Yup,” she said “I got all my stuff packed, wrote Max, and practiced for a while,”

“I’m proud of you” he said “you found the position you were destined to play and worked all summer, Gryffindor will have its best seeker since Harry Potter this year,”

“Thanks Daddy” she said

“Yeah thanks Daddy” said Euen, who had just walked in. Reese flicked him in the ear.

“Be nice kids” said their mother, “Hi baby,” she said, walking over to give her husband a kiss.

“Ewww” said Parker, watching from the kitchen counter. He sat with a bowl of cereal and a rucksack hung on the back of his chair. His dad went over, picked him up and threw him in the air. Parker was ten years old, but he was very small, something that was not to be talked about in the house, if he caught you talking about his size, you were pretty much dead.

“You stink, Dad.” Parker said after he was put back in his chair

“Yeah I better get a quick shower before were off to London.” He said, and headed off to his bedroom.

Later that night, the family all packed up, and trunks all strapped in, hopped on their brooms and headed towards London. The family thoroughly enjoyed flying, and often flew everywhere they went. The kids had two older brothers and another older sister, all who were out of Hogwarts and off doing their own thing. Ruston was 18 and had just moved into a flat in London. Liam was 19, worked in the ministry and lived in a small town with his girlfriend. Jane was the oldest, 21 and had recently moved to Australia with her boyfriend to study Alchemy. Reese and Jane were very close and wrote to each other often.

The family arrived at Grimmauld Place, a place Harry and Ginny owned and where all of the family friends met up in London to get ready for the new year at Hogwarts. Ginny, Oliver, and Katie had become close when they had all played professional Quidditch, and when their kids were born in the same year, they started to hang out all the time. Reese, Euen, and Parker were all best friends with James, Albus and Lily.

Oliver tapped his wand and the two buildings split, they walked up and knocked on the door, which was answered by Kreacher.

“Ah, yes, the Wood family has arrived, I shall alert Master Harry, yes, very good” said Kreacher, under his breath. They followed Kreacher into the Den, where they were greeted by Harry, Ginny, Ron, and Hermione. After many hugs were exchanged, the kids upstairs heard the commotion and came down to greet the Woods. Reese hugged Lily and gave Albus a fist bump. James gave her a long hug, which surprised her.

“Hey, Jamie” said Reese, James shot her a dirty look at the mention of his dreaded nickname

“Hey, Reesie” he retaliated with, and the friends headed upstairs to the room they would be sharing with Euen and eventually Max and Linden. Linden Meyers was James and Euens best mate, whose parents were extremely successful at the ministry and barley had any time for a son. He spent much of the summer at friends houses and always came to stay with them for the last few days before school.

“Max said she’ll be here tomorrow morning” James said to Reese as they sat down on beds across from each other. “And Linden will be here in about an hour”

“Sounds good” Reese said, and the two dove into a very heated conversation about Quidditch.

Chapter 2: hogwarts
[Printer Friendly Version of This Chapter]

The children and parents had both thoroughly enjoyed the next few days, and September 1st had finally arrived. Reese woke up early, around 7:30 and packed all of her new school supplies. She dropped one of her books on the floor, waking Linden who was sleeping in a cot next to the two beds.

“Morning” he said tiredly

“Good Morning” she said, picking the book up off the floor and putting it in her trunk. They heard footsteps down the hall, and then Hermione popped her head in the door.

“Hey, guys, its time to wake up” she said “We’ve got a busy morning ahead of us.” At this, Max and Euen awoke, but James lay in bed, still sound asleep. Reese hit him with her pillow.

“W-what time is it?” He said groggily.

“8 o clock” said Euen

“Too early,” James said, pulling his pillow over his head. Reese and Max dragged him out of bed by his feet.

“Ah, you got him up” Ginny said from the doorway, “Good work girls.”

Reese and Max laughed.

Hermione had managed to get them all ministry cars to go to kings cross. With many children and many large trunks stuffed in the cars, they headed to kings cross. The 5 teens split off from the rest of the group and went off towards platform 9 ¾. They all reunited with old friends, and dropped off their trunks at the luggage station. Albus and Rose went off to find their mates, as well as Lily and Hugo. Reese hugged her mother and father, and headed to find a compartment with Max. Euen hugged his father and allowed his mother to kiss him on the cheek before running off to James, who was following Reese and Max. Once they found an empty compartment, they began to speak quietly about news James had hear from his father.

“He said the death eaters are starting to attack people” James began “All of the people attacked so far were either in the Order of the Pheonix, or Dumbledores Army.”

“Are our parents safe?” Asked Reese

“They should be,” he replied, “Dad said he would be adding protection to ever Order and DA members house that he knows of at the moment and they are trying to get in contact with the rest before the news breaks in the Prophet.

“When will it?” Asked Euen

“Probably tomorrow or the day after that” James replied. A first year boy then opened the door.

“H-hi, s-sorry to bother you, but have you seen a bit of parchment with a list on it anywhere?” The group all shook their head no, the boy apologized again and quickly left.

“First years,” muttered Linden

“You know, that reminds me,” said James, reaching into the pocket of his jeans and pulling out a piece of parchment.

“I remember Uncle George telling me about this, and I nicked it from my Dads office this summer,”

“What,” said Max “A bit of parchment?”

“Its not just a bit of parchment” Reese said, pointing her wand at it, “I solemnly swear that I am up to no good.”

“The Marauders Map” Max read, and James opened it up.

“Its a map of the whole school, all the secret passages, and trapdoors and secret rooms, everything its all on here,”

“Woah” said Euen

“And,” said James, “Look.” He pointed at a black dot in the Headmistress study. The group bent forward to see. Minerva McGonogall, it read and Max gasped.

“You can see what everyone is doing, where they are, every minute of every day” James said.

“Now that, is awesome” said Linden.

“Anything from the trolley dears?” Asked the witch from outside the compartment. James quickly stuffed the map under his leg. Once everyone had gotten their sweets, he tapped it with his wand and said “Mischef Managed”

“We better change into our robes” said Euen, and they did that, as the Castle came into view over the mountains. It always felt amazing seeing Hogwarts for the first time every year. It felt like the start of something amazing.

Professor McGonagall hit her fork to her glass, and the whole Great Hall fell silent.

“Welcome to a new year at Hogwarts, everyone” she said “Before we begin the sorting, I’d like to welcome our new Transfiguration teacher, Professor Hillien.” The students clapped as the new professor stood up.

“Now,” continued Professor McGonagall, placing the sorting hat on the chair, “Let the sorting begin.” The hat sang about chance, opportunity and some “dark peril”. The sorting then began with Arwen, Wyatt, who was sorted into Slytherin. They all watched the nervous first years approach the stool, and cheered loudly when someone was sorted into Gryffindor. Finally, after a few words from McGonagall, the feast appeared in front of them. They dug in, and conversation about the upcoming school year arised.

“I’m thinking of holding Quidditch tryouts in about two weeks,” Freddie said “Then we’ll have a good amount of time to practice as a team before the first match, which is mid-October.”

“Sounds good,” Reese replied

“Yeah,” James agreed, mouth full of chicken.

Conversation continued throughout dinner, and they all headed up to the Gryffindor common room.

“Password?” Said the Fat Lady.

“Lucidrious” said the Prefect standing in front of them, and the portrait swung open. It revealed the common room, dressed in red and yellow fabrics, fire a blazing, a warm, homey feeling to it.

“It feels good to be back,” said Max. The group hung around in the crowded common room, before going off to bed, when the head of Gryffindor, Professor Longbottom came in to make sure everyone was off to bed.

“No sneaking off on the first night, you lot,” said the Professor.

“No promises, Professor,” replied Linden.

The next morning, Reese woke to Max shaking her.

“Time to get up, lazy” said Max, “Breakfast is starting soon.” Reese got up and out of bed, and put on her robes. The rest of the girls in the dormitory were already getting ready. Reese brushed her hair and teeth, and the girls headed downstairs, where they met the boys in the common room.

“Why do girls take so long to get ready?” Asked Euen.

“I don’t know,” said James, “But they sure do look better than us.” He smiled at Reese, which Max caught.

They ate breakfast and received their schedules for the day, which included Transfiguration, Defense against the Dark Arts, and double Herbology all together. Other classes were different for each of the friends. Reese had Astronomy with James, and Ancient Ruins with Max. Linden was the only one still taking Care of Magical Creatures.

They went through their day, and after lunch, they all headed to Transfiguration together, ready to scope out the new teacher.

“Alright, lets see who’s here, everyone” Hillien began attendance.

“Wren Axim” she said

“Here” said a dry voice from the back, James groaned, he was not excited to have Wren in his class

“Next, Linden Meyers”

“Here,” said Linden

“She seems pretty cool,” James said to Euen

“Tucker Kidwell” the teacher continued.

“Yeah,” agreed Euen

“Maxine-“ the Professor was cut off

“Max.” Max said “Its Max”

“Alright then,” said the professor

“James Potter”

“Hurrrrr” James said in a funny voice. The teacher laughed. The entire room was surprised. There were only a few cool teachers at Hogwarts.

“Reese Wood,” the teacher continued, Reese raised her hand.

The class continued, and the 5th years were surprised to how much fun they could have in a Transfiguration class. James and Reese were walking out of the door, talking, when the back of Reese’s cloak was pulled, and she staggered backwards, but did not fall. James and Reese turned around to see Wren Axim standing there.

“Fun class, eh” said Axim, “hot teacher, bet you loved that James, since you can’t keep a girlfriend,”

James looked infuriated. Reese grabbed James’ arm,

“Let’s go, James, he’s not worth it,”

James looked at her, and calmed down slightly. She turned him around and they began to walk the other way.

“That’s right, Potter, just let your little incompetent girlfriend calm you down, but we all know your just too much of a sissy to hit me,” Axim said loudly so everyone in the hall could hear. James lost it, and lunged at Axim.

Professor Longbottom was walking through the hallway at the time, and pulled James off of Axim, and brought him into his office. Everyone looked at Axim. He had a large purple mass on the side of his head, probably from James’ wand. Reese was very confused to why James had even jumped on Axim. He was walking away, until Wren called her incompetent. She, however, ignored this, and continued onto her next class with Max.

Chapter 3: sometimes you just get so angry
[Printer Friendly Version of This Chapter]

Axim wasn’t back in class until next tuesday, James had done such damage. What was funny was, James didn’t even remember pulling out his wand and jinxing Axim. He only remembered lunging at him and then being pulled off by Professor Longbottom.

“I’ve got my last detention tonight” James said, while struggling with his broom polish, “Then we’ve got tryouts tomorrow and I’ll stay out of trouble.” Freddie, Euen, Reese, and Max were sitting at the table in the common room.

“Good,” said Freddie, “I’m going to hold you to that, James.”

Reese grabbed James’ hand, and took the polishing rag from him. She began to help him clean up his polishing job, and pulled off some loose twigs.

“Thanks,” he said nervously.

“No problem” she said back to him, smiling. The girls then headed up to their dormitory to grab their Herbology textbooks before their class.

“He likes you, Reese” said Max quietly

“No he doesn’t,” she said, quiet sadness in her voice, “Anyways, I told you, I’ve moved on, I’m hanging out with Oscar later.”

“Whatever you say,” said Max, obviously not convinced. They girls headed to Herbology.

Reese was struggling with her Snargaluff pod, and a hand reached over and pulled it out for her. She looked up to see a sandy blonde haired Ravenclaw holding the pod.

“Oh, thanks, Oscar,” she said happily

“You’re late, Mr. Finnegan” Professor Longbottom said “One more and that’s a detention,”

“Sorry, Professor,” said Oscar, “Got distracted while flying, won’t happen again.” Oscar was the Keeper for Ravenclaw.

“Grab a pod,” the Professor said, walking to go help another student, and Oscar picked one right next to Reese’s.

“We still on for after class today?” He asked

“Yeah,” she said “Looking forward to it,” Oscar smiled, and pulled out another pod.

After all of the pods had been pulled out, and their last class for the day was over, Reese and Oscar headed to the Black Lake to have a small picnic.

“What a tool,” James said,

“I thought you were over your little crush on her,” Linden said.

“I am,” James said, unconvincingly, “But he’s still a tool”

“James is right” said Euen, coming up from behind him “He is a tool,” he said as they watched Reese and Oscar walk away, hand in hand.

“Calm down boys” said Max, walking up to them “Euen, just because you’ve never had a girlfriend doesn’t mean you have to not be ok with Reese having a boyfriend,”

“So he’s her boyfriend now?” Euen asked, ignoring the rest of the sentence she said.

“No, but I bet he will be pretty soon” she said, walking away.

Reese had a good time with Oscar, and headed to dinner, then back to the common room.

“Did you have fun?” Asked Max

“I did, I really like him, we’re going to hang out for a bit in hogsmeade next weekend.”

“You’ll still hang out with me though, right?” Max asked

“Yeah, of course,” Reese said, “We’ll go to honeydukes and zonkos before I meet Oscar”

“Where are you meeting him” she asked

“Nowhere” Reese said

“Its Madame Pudifoots isn’t it?” Max asked, laughing

“Ok, it was his idea, and its not really my thing, but he wanted to go!”

Max just kept laughing at her and Reese started to walk out

“No, I’m sorry,” she said, still laughing. “Stay, cmon,”

Reese smiled at Max and they went up to the dormitory together.

James was up bright and early on Saturday, it was the day of quidditch tryouts. He got a shower, then woke up Euen. Linded had just opened his eyes as well.

“You all got tryouts today?” Asked Linden groggily.

“Yeah,” Euen replied.

Reese, Euen, James, and Max all headed down to the pitch after getting changed. Freddie began tryouts with a lap around the pitch, which eliminated about a fourth of the players. He then separated all of the players into positions, and began with picking the second beater. He chose Max pretty quickly, she was very strong. Chaser tryouts were hardly necessary, with James and Euen getting immediate spots, and a 7th year named Lauren Davis getting the third. Freddie then chose a surprising Keeper, a muggle-born 3rd year named Cassie Stallion. She was really good. Finally, there were only two seekers that had lasted the rest of tryouts, Reese and last years Seeker, a 6th year called Devan Markwell. He was decent, but was not a team player, and Freddie absolutely hated him. They were all praying that Reese flew better than he did. And she did. She flew amazingly and caught the snitch extremely quickly all three times, including an incredible dive during her last one.

“Come on, Fred, I was so much better than her,”

“I don’t want to hear it, Devan,” said Freddie “She’s a better teammate and team player, and a hell of a better Seeker than you’ll ever be,”

“She’s awful, Weasly, you can’t actually be putting her on the team, this has to be some kind of joke,”

“Hey,” said James as he walked over, “Shut it” he said to Devan

“You protecting your little girlfriend, Potter, she’s not even good enough to be a chaser, and neither are you, none of you should be on the team.”

James lunged at him.

“James! No!” Said Freddie, pulling him off, but the damage was already done, Devan was lying on the ground, blood uncontrollably spurting from his nose, and Professor Xavier was looking at them from the stands.

“James, I’m not going to give you detention,” the Professor said as he sat behind his desk. “But I have to inform your parents, they should know”

“I know” James said, “Thanks for not giving me detention”

“James, I know people make mistakes, but this has always been a repetitive thing for you. Maybe you should talk to your parents, because it doesn’t seem to be something you can control,”

“Ok, Professor, thanks again, see you in class tomorrow”

“Bye James”

“No detention” he told Freddie

“Thank God, how are you so lucky. If it was literally any other Professor”

“I know, and I’m going to try to stop,” he said

“No more fights” Freddie said

“No more fights” James repeated.

Reese and James sat on the common room floor, finishing a potions essay due tomorrow

“Counterclockwise 13 times you said?” He asked

“Twelve” she replied, “And you spelled Burboton wrong, there’s only one t”

“Thanks,” he said

“So you agreed to Freddie no more fights?” She asked

“Yeah,” he said

“Why do you do it” she asked

“I don’t even know” he replied “I just get so freaking angry and the next moment I’m on top of someone and they have boils all over their face,”

“You need to just stop and think before that happens” she said.

“Yeah,” he said

The next morning, James’ family owl, Kit, a beautiful snowy owl flew towards him during breakfast, carrying a red letter in her beak.

“Oh, no” Lily said, sitting next to James, “Mums sent you a howler,”

James reluctantly opened the letter, knowing what happens if you don’t.

“JAMES SIRIUS POTTER, ARE YOU SERIOUS? ANOTHER FIGHT? I DON’T UNDERSTAND WHY YOU KEEP DOING THIS. YOU CAN'T JUST BEAT SOMEONE UP IF YOU DON’T LIKE THEM, EVEN IF THEY ARE A JERK. WE GET IT YOU CAN THROW A NICE PUNCH, NOW WHY DON’T YOU TRY FOCUSING THAT ENERGY ON I DON’T KNOW, STUDYING?”

James laughed, he hadn’t gotten one of these in a while. He wasn’t embarrassed, but his siblings were. He knew he just needed to talk to his mom during Christmas and tell her what’s going on , like Professor Xavier suggested.

Chapter 4: quidditch and trouble
[Printer Friendly Version of This Chapter]

Another article about the attacks had shown up in the Prophet the morning of the first quidditch match at Hogwarts.“THE AFTERMATH OF THE WAR IS UPON US,” the headline read.

“Four attacks in the past week,” said Euen “all of them former members of the Order of the Phoenix, or Dumbledore’s Army,”

“It’s crazy,” said James, “My mum said nothing like this had happened since the war ended,”

“That’s a bit unsettling,” said Max, mouthful of porridge.

They finished breakfast, and headed out to the changing rooms. The first match would be Hufflepuff versus Gryffindor.

“Pretty decent conditions,” Said Freddie, looking up at the sky. The students had begun to file into the stands. James hopped on his broom, and pushed off of the ground. Reese followed him and they began to mess around, trying to catch each other.

“Hey, you guys,” said Freddie, “Cut it out,”

“Aw c'mon, Fred, we’re just having a bit of fun,” said James. But they complied, and flew into position, while Madame Cordila walked to the center of the pitch to begin the match. She released the bludgers and the snitch.

“And the Quaffle is up!” Said Linden from the microphone, “Lauren Davis of Gryffindor grabs the Quaffle and starts down the field, Oh did you see that bludger hit from Max Morian, it hit Charlie Reid right in the side of the face!”

The Hufflepuff chaser was now barely hanging on to his broom.

“Lauren Davis passes to James Potter, and that’s ten points to Gryffindor!”

The crowd cheered loudly. Euen then scored 7 more goals, the Hufflepuff keeper was throwing up on the side, after a nasty hit from Freddie. That’s when Reese spotted the snitch on the side of the Hufflepuff goal post, where the other seeker, Katherine Gial, was flying around. To distract her, Reese dove down towards the ground, and kept going, acting as if she saw the snitch. She then pulled up fast, and Katherine kept going, losing control of her broom. Reese chased the snitch, reached out her hand, and caught it through the middle goal post, almost crashing into Cassie. The crowd cheered loudly as the team then flew to the ground. James hugged Reese, and Reese hugged Max, there was a lot of hugging going around. She then saw Oscar on the other side of the field and he came over to her,

“You’re amazing,” he said, and kissed her. It was warm and felt amazing. She looked up at him and smiled.

James looked at Reese, who had just broken apart from Oscar. He frowned for a split second, but it was caught by Max. He quickly engaged in conversation with Euen, looking the other way. Reese and Oscar had then walked away, and Max went to find Linden, and headed to the kitchens to get some food to celebrate their victory.

Another week of long practices had gone by, and they were tired.

“James,” said Professor Hillien, “Wake up,”

“W-what’s going on?” James said, as he lifted his head off the table. The class laughed.

“Perhaps you ought to go to the hospital wing and get some rest, Mr. Potter.”

“No,’ James said, picking up his wand. “I’m fine, seriously,” and he began to practice changing his teapot into a porcupine.

After class in the hallway, James caught up to Reese, who looked to be telling of Devan Markwell, the 6th year boy who was denied a spot on the Gryffindor Quidditch team.

“Devan, I don’t care, now stop asking me,” she said.

“I’m going out with someone, and even if i wasn’t I wouldn’t date you,”

“Aw, come on, I’m a year older…” he continued and James began to walk over to tell Devan off, but before he had the chance, Devan was hit with a jinx, and bees began to swarm around his face. He ran around the corridor, screaming.

“Nice one,” said Oscar, who came up behind her, kissing her on the cheek.

“James walked passed them, and hurried up to Euen,”

“James!” Reese said, seeing the back of his head. He pretended not to hear her and kept walking. She forgot about it when Professor Daxtrom, the potions master, came up to her,

“Miss Wood,” he said “Detention with me, tonight, for the use of magic in the corridor,”

“Awe come on Professor, I’ve got quidditch,” she complained

“I can give you two if you’d like” he said

“No thanks” she said, and walked away. Oscar turned her around and kissed her. She pushed him out of the way.

“What?” He said

“I’m just not a fan of PDA,” she said

“Awe, come on, I can’t kiss you,”

“You can,” she said, “Just not in the hallway in front of everybody, it grosses me out when others do it,” and she walked into the Ancient Ruins classroom, and sat next to James.

“I’m going to miss the first half of practice,” she said.

“Why?” He asked

“Daxtrom saw me hex Markwell,” she said “I’ve got detention,”

“What an arse,” James said “Markwell and Daxtrom,”

“I know,” she said.

“I saw you walk away from Oscar,” James said, “Is he an arse too?”

“No, he’s just not to happy with me not wanting to kiss him in the corridors,”

“Oh,” said James. I just don’t particularly like watching other people kiss in public, and so it makes me uncomfortable when I do it too,”

“He should respect that,” James said “I’m not much of a fan of watching people kiss either.” Reese laughed.

“Thanks, James,” she said, and they continued on translating their ruins.

Reese then sat in detention, sorting potion ingredients for the Professor when James walked in.

“Hey,” she said, “Why aren’t you at practice?”

“I kind of, insulted Professor Daxtrom,” James said, “So he gave me a detention,”

“Potter, you’re late, and you’re lucky that won’t cost you another quidditch practice.” The Professor said. “Help Miss Wood sort these ingredients into sections, and then put them back in the stores,” he said, and headed to his desk to grade essays. Reese and James were told multiple times by the Professor to stop talking, and get to work, but they eventually they finished, and ran off to the pitch to catch the last hour of practice.

“Finally,” said Freddie, “Go over there and practice you’re bludger dodging with Max, both of you,”

Chapter 5: relationships are hard
[Printer Friendly Version of This Chapter]

Reese handed Professor Hillien her permission form, and so did Oscar. It was time for their first visit to Hogsmeade. The couple spent some time at Madame Pudifoots, though Reese was reluctant. She didn’t like that Oscar didn’t know her, and didn’t care either. He kind of just did what he wanted, they went to Honeydukes together, Oscar ran into some friends, and Reese left him to meet James and Max at the three broomsticks. They chatted about their upcoming Defence Against the Dark Arts class, and then the conversation shifted to the attacks.

“2 more people have died,” James said, “and their pretty much attacking anyone at this point, all who fought in the Battle of Hogwarts, or their close family members,”

“Geez,” said Max, “this is getting a little crazy,”

“My dad says the Auror office is trying to contain it, but there are too many to guard everyone who is not a dark wizard, right now they have guards at all of the former order members, and DA members houses,”

“So my parents?” Asked Reese

“Yeah,” James said, “He said your mum and dad are perfectly safe, as well as Parker.” Reese looked relieved. Her mother and Parker were often alone in her house, while her father was at practice. They continued to talk about the attacks and then headed back to the castle in time for dinner.

It was about a week from Christmas break. James, Reese, Linden, Max and Euen would all be heading to the Potters house for their annual Christmas Party, and then everyone would be heading to their own homes, and James would be spending a few days at the Wood’s before Christmas Day.

The friends headed to Defence Against the Dark Arts the next morning, excited for their new lesson.

“Ok, today we will be learning the Patronus charm, can anyone tell me the use of this charm?” said Professor Xavier “James?” He said, snapping his fingers in front of James’ face.

“Oh, uh to get rid of dementors,” said James

“Yes, very good,” said the Professor, “The Patronus charm will repel a dementor, and if powerful enough, will emit an animal form, which is different from everyone, for example,” He said “Expecto Patronum” and a silver eagle came out of the tip of his wand.

“Woahhh” said a voice from the back, and numerous students seemed impressed.

“Now, the key to the Patronus charm, is to think of a memory, a particularly happy memory,” the Professor continued, “You’ll need to focus on that memory, and direct it towards your Patronus. Then, the incantation ‘Expecto Patronum’, now I don’t expect you to get it right away, but let’s all try it now.”

James got it first try, a silvery deer coming out of his wand, but James had been able to do a Patronus since third year.

“How can you do that so well?” Asked Linden.

“I dunno,” he said, “Just think of what makes you the happiest, what gives you butterflies,” James said

“Got it, butterflies,” Linden said sarcastically. James glanced at Reese and smiled, which she returned. Reese was also having trouble with her Patronus, which was rare for her, having trouble with a spell. She was getting pretty frustrated. All she had gotten was a bit of silvery stuff coming out of her wand. They kept practicing the next few days, and almost everyone in the class had gotten their Patronus, except Reese.

“Can you help me?” She asked James.

“Yeah, how bout we meet in the common room after practice tonight?” He said.

“Thank you so much, James,” she said. He smiled at her, and headed down the corridor.

Quidditch practice went well, and Reese and James were then in an empty classroom, as the common room was way too crowded for them to practice in there.

“Think of the happiest you’ve ever been,” James said, “You know, the thing that makes you smile every time you think about it.” Reese thought about Quidditch, and flying, and how it makes her feel.

“Expecto Patronum!” She said, and a bit of silver stuff came out of her wand.

“That was good!” He said, but try a different memory, it might work better.” She thought of her first kiss with Oscar, and the same amount of silvery stuff came out. Then she remembered. Her first kiss. She was thirteen and sitting in the Potters backyard, with James, playing Quidditch, and she caught the snitch, and they flew down, and she kissed him. They had never spoken about it much afterwards, but she remembered how happy she felt when she finally decided to kiss him.

“Expecto Patronum!!” She said, and finally, a giant, silver hippogriff came out of the end of her wand.

“YES!” James, said, and gave her a hug. That was the moment that she realized, James was the one who made her the happiest, not

Oscar. But she didn’t act on it. Instead, they sat on the floor in the back of the classroom, and talked, until they realized how late it had become.

The next day, Oscar was trying to get Reese to wear the heart necklace he had gotten her.

“Oscar, you’re a good guy, but you don’t seem to care about what I want,” she said, “It’s always what you want to do, or what you want me to wear, but you don’t own me,”

“Cmon, Reese, its fine, you don’t have to wear it, I’m sorry,”

“No, Oscar, I’m tired of I’m sorry, one day you’ll find the girl who loves to go to coupley shops, and wear heart necklaces, but that’s just not me, I’m sorry but it's over,” she said, and walked away, running into Max outside the Gryffindor common room.

“Reese,” she said, and followed her into the dormitory,

“Are you ok?” Max asked

“Yeah, I’m fine, he was a good guy, but he wasn’t good for me.”

“I know” she said, she didn’t hug her friend, she knew it wasn’t necessary. They then finished their Charms essays during their free period, and went to lunch. Oscar and his friends were giving James disgusted looks, who was sitting awfully close to Reese, talking to her about Saturdays Quidditch match against Ravenclaw.

“I hope Freddie doesn’t think it's an issue,” said Reese, “You know, what happened with Oscar, because it isn’t, I’m perfectly fine playing against him,”

“I know you are,” said James, “and Freddie does too, he trusts you”

“Good,” said Reese, smiling and nudging James in the arm.

Saturday morning came quickly, and Reese was up early and ready for the game, and Max was in the shower. The boys, however, had slept in, so Reese went into their dorm to wake them up. She hit Euen with a pillow.

“Get up,” she said, “We’ve got to be down at the pitch in 30 minutes”

“It's toooo early,” said James, getting back under the covers, but Reese ripped them back off him.

“Up!” Said Reese, “You lazy gits” she said, and walked out.

They headed down to the pitch, and James still looked very tired.

“How late were you up?” Asked Max

“I dunno,” said James “Couldn’t sleep for some reason,”

“Well better get some energy quick,” said Reese, patting him on the back, “Because I’m going to need you to score a lot on Oscar today,”

“I gotchu, don’t worry,” He said, and flew into the air. The game started off rough, but then James started scoring, 7 in a row, and after every single one, a look at Reese, which was then met by an angry look from Oscar. These looks just made James want to score more, including an incredible goal where he 360 faked out Oscar, and scored.

“YESS!” Reese yelled, and James shot her a huge grin, almost falling off of his broom. Reese then chased the snitch, which was flying near the commentators box, and caught it, almost crashing into Linden in the process. She gave James a huge hug, and they all went straight to bed, extremely tired, and ready to go home the next day.

Chapter 7: winter is here

“Yes, very good, 10 points to Gryffindor” said the Professor, “The Patronus charm will repel a dementor, and if powerful enough, will emit an animal form, which is different for everyone, for example,” He said “Expecto Patronum” and a silver eagle came out of the tip of his wand.

They all headed to the Hogwarts express the next day. It was a quite boring ride, until they were interrupted by Oscar walking into the wrong compartment. As soon as he realized what he had done, he turned red and stumbled back into the corridor. James held back his urge to laugh, but his face went blank when Reese stepped out to talk to Oscar.

“Hey,” she said

“Oh,hi,” said Oscar. He was fixing himself and getting ready to walk away.

“I know it’s not possible right now,” she began, “but I don’t dislike you, and I would like us to try to be friends maybe, if you want,”

“Yeah,” he said awkwardly, “that’d be nice I guess,” a small smile came across his face.

“Ok great,” she said “have a good holiday,” she said, and turned around.

“ you too!” He called back, not hiding the excitement in his voice very well, but Reese didn’t notice.

“Everything good?” Max asked as Reese sat back down.

“ yeah,” she said.
