What do you do, when the one who means the most to you

Is the one who didn't show?

Based on 'The Moment I Knew' by Taylor Swift

Chapter 1: Moment
[Printer Friendly Version of This Chapter]

Christmas lights glisten,

I've got my eye on the door,

Just waiting for you to walk in

The fairy lights hung on the walls glistened, and I kept a firm eye on the door as the party continued around me.

I waited patiently, knowing at any moment he'd burst through the door with that 'baby I'm right here' smile. And I would feel like a million shining stars had just aligned in my heart. I would feel so happy.

“So, how have you been Rose? I heard you've met a wonderful young man, is he here tonight?” My cousin Dom asks sweetly as I take a tighter grip on my champagne and force a smile onto my face.

“He's running a little late, but he should be here any minute now. He's working.” Dom raises her eyebrows skeptically, and forms a tight smile just as false as my own on her face.

“Well, I should mingle, happy birthday darling.” She gives me a light kiss on the cheek before turning to introduce herself to my friends.

As I comb back through my memory,

How you said you'd be here,

You said you'd be here.

And it was like slow motion,

Standing there in my party dress,

In red lipstick,

With no one to impress,

I tune out the music playing in the room as I comb back through my memory, remember how he said he'd be here. But the time is ticking on and I'm standing here in my party dress, in the red lipstick he likes, waiting.

I look around the room, and see that everyone is laughing and having a great time. But he's missing. Scorp isn't here.

He'll be here.

He promised.

And the hours pass by,

Now I just wanna be alone,

But your close friends always seem to know

When there's something really wrong

The hours quickly passed by, and I couldn't fight the sadness that washed over me as I rushed down the hall to the bathroom. I trying my hardest not to fall apart as I seat myself on the edge of the bathtub. A gentle knock on the door causes me to lift my head, and my best friend Lily walks in, her expression sympathetic.

“Are you okay?” she closed the door softly behind her, sitting down next to me.

I wrapped my arms around her wordlessly, shaking my head as the tears began to fall and the sinking feeling started.

“He said he'd be here.” I whispered hopelessly.

“I know, I'm so sorry, Rose. I'm so sorry.” She held me tighter, letting me cry myself out on her shoulder as she rubbed soothing circles on my back.

“This was it for us. I told him that tonight was his last chance to show me that he could change, that he could love me right.”

I pulled myself out of her embrace a few moments later and wiped the mascara and tears from my face.

What do you say

When tears are streaming down your face

In front of everyone you know?

“What are you supposed to do, when you're standing in front of everyone you know, barely holding it together. And the one person who could make it better, the one that means the most to you, is the one person that didn't show?”

“I don't know, Rose.” I could tell that Lily didn't know what she could do to help. I opened my mouth to comfort her, when the muffled sound of “Happy birthday to you” hit my ears. I stood up slowly and walked to the mirror, wiping my face and fixing up my hair and make-up, before exhaling deeply.

Lily took my hand and I smiled gratefully at her as she led me back through the door, to my party.

He should have been here.

I would have been so happy.

You called me later

It was late that night when my phone rang. The party had wrapped up hours before, and all I wanted was to curl into bed with a book.

I pick up my phone, and see Scorp's face lighting up the screen. I take a shaky breath in before answering the call, waiting a few seconds before bringing it to my ear.

“Hey Rosie.” A lump forms in my throat at the sound of his voice and I brush away a stray tear before I answer.

“Hey Scorp.” My voice is barely a whisper into the receiver.

“I'm sorry I didn't make it tonight.” He apologises.

And that was it.

That was the moment I knew.

“Yeah, I'm sorry too.” I reply stiffly before ending the call and throwing my phone to the ground, watching the glass shatter and the screen go dark as I let him go forever.

Hey guys, so this is the half-heartedly written song fic you've heard so much about. That is, if you check my authors page for updates on my writing (or lack thereof) and stories.

I have another one written based on Stay Stay Stay by Taylor Swift, and ideas for a bunch more that'll probably be written alongside Mindset.

Speaking of Mindset, I know it's been ages since an update but school has gotten insane recently. I've getting insanely close to my final few years and I'm sort of stressing out. A lot.

Anyways I've decided to do a massive edit of Mindset, which should get done over the next few months. I'm not doing the edits in order of chapters, rather I'm going to change one aspect of the story in all the chapters then go over the story again and change something else.

Just wanted to reassure you that I WILL NOT BE ABANDONING MINDSET!

Thank you for bearing with me guys.

Much love, Adi x x
