Chapter One - Tidal Wave

"Say something" she whispered her voice breaking the crisp silence of the beautiful August night.

It was night, the almost full moon was reflecting off the still ocean water, only a few stars glistened in the sky like fireflies dancing in the stretch of a dark blue sky.

The beach where the two of them stood was empty as one would expect it to be at eleven at night. There was barely a breeze which was good as the girl was still wearing denim shorts and a strappy white top from their day at the beach.

She was stood with her arms folded, still slightly red in the face from the argument which had just occurred, her eyes narrowed as she waited for her companion to say something. He did not - he merely stood there and stared at her, not showing any emotion as he surveyed the girl in front of him, one may guess he was shocked people who knew him would say he was just confused and maybe disappointed, however he kept neutral and watched her before:

"Want do you want me to say?" the words left his mouth with a sort of coldness to them, he paused as if waiting for the girl to interrupt him, she said nothing, "You want me to pat you on the back and tell you not to worry because at least you told the truth?" he continued, "Because honestly I don't think you are telling the truth, you're scared, scared of something that has every chance to hurt you even though deep down you know it won't"

She did not look him in the eyes, she suddenly felt extremely ashamed and the thought of even looking at him made her feel even more guilty than she already did, "You're wrong" she said loudly but not confidently, because the truth was he was not wrong - far from it really, but she had to attempt to convince him and if not that, convince herself.

"Lying to me is fine, but don't bother lying to yourself, you’re smarter than that" He told her and he turned away from her but before walking away he looked at her one last time, he smiled but not a cheerful happy smile, a cold one full of hurt that's what killed her inside. He shook his head before saying: "always the deer in the headlights aren't you?" he muttered, but she knew it was a rhetorical question. "I’ll see you around" he added.

That was the last thing he said before he turned away from her for the last time and really did walk away.

exactly three and a half weeks prior to this conversation

Happiness can be defined as being content with what you have or who you have. It can also be described as feeling elated when certain things happen, for example spending time with people you feel happy around which will then lead to a memory that whenever you think about it, it will make you feel happy.

Happiness however can also be something you can just feel, one could feel happy when everything is going right in life for once, or perhaps when a good thing happens that turns a bad week into a good week.

Some would say to be happy they would like to win a million pounds, others perhaps an expensive car would be nice to have and maybe for some the things that would make them happy would just be to have somebody to share all of their thoughts with.

For Lily Evans right now what would make her happy would be that she would not be stuck in a car driving to Devon with her sister, because though Petunia Evans may have once been her best friend it was now eight years on from that and Lily was not a nine year old girl anymore and Petunia was certainly not twelve.

Twelve year old Petunia Evans was very unlike twenty year old Petunia Evans, she had been sweet and funny, maybe with a bit of a bad temper, a bit of jealousy and slightly selfish but never mean or cruel. Not until two days before Lily's tenth birthday when her younger sister met Severus Snape - Petunia had a rivalry for the friendship of her own sister: and then a year and a day later Petunia finally let go of her 'freaky' sister and became the opposite to sweet and funny and her mean, selfish and jealous side was shown and thus bringing forward the relationship the two sisters had to this day.

"I don't see why I have to drive you" Petunia was complaining, "From Cokeworth to Devon, just because Mum doesn't want something to happen to her precious, special baby lily-kins" Petunia continued in a derogatory tone.

Lily snorted - she was barely listening to her sister rant on but occasionally she would tune back in and roll her eyes at the crap that came out of Petunia's mouth, "I don't see why you care" Lily sighed, "you're going down there anyway"

Petunia sniffed, "Well it's a good job I was, Vernon has a meeting down there so we're getting a plane from the airport near Exeter and flying to France from there" she said as if Lily honestly cared about the details, "But that's beside the point, you took a driving test and passed why couldn't you drive yourself?"

"Mum said there was no point in taking two cars" Lily replied dryly she was so sick of repeating answers to tedious questions she knew really were supposed to be rhetorical.

Lily was going down to Devon for six weeks to stay in a house with some friends from school. Well only three of them were her friends: Marlene McKinnon, Georgia Heckles and Mary MacDonald. She supposed that was a bit unfair as Remus Lupin was a very good friend of hers and he would be going, herself and Remus had bonded and gained a very close friendship over prefect duties for the past two years and Peter Pettigrew wasn't all bad when he wasn't bowing down to James Potter and Sirius Black the two boys her made her want to pull her hair out.

Why she was going on holiday with Potter and Black absolutely boggled her. But due to the fact Marlene had grown up with Sirius and had struck something of a friendship with him, she had invited the Marauders to stay with them in Devon for a month. Lily supposed it wasn't that strange really, as she was quite good friends with Remus herself, as was her three other friends especially Mary. Also Marlene played Quidditch with Potter and Black so knew them extremely well and the two groups ended up spending a lot of time together.

Quidditch is a sport played on brooms by witches and wizards, and Lily Evans was a Witch. This was why Petunia called her a freak because Lily was different and she loved it. She spent nine months in the year at a school in Scotland called Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry studying how to perform spells using her magic wand, how to brew potions among many other things. She belonged to Gryffindor house which her friends and the four boys belonged to too.

James Potter and herself did not have a great relationship, he was very taken with her and was extremely infatuated with her of course it was a unrequited liking she had no such feelings towards him, infact she felt the exact opposite. In her opinion he was mean, arrogant, conceited and a bully but in many others opinions he was something of a legend: popular, good looking, funny, charming and athletic, does it really need to be mentioned that he was the captain of the Gryffindor Quidditch team. He was also one of the most of the popular boys in school, himself and his three friends making up the Marauders as they called themselves, Merlin knows why.

Pushing Potter out of her mind she focused on the road in front of her and how it would only be two hours until she reached the house Mary had hired out for the summer. She was excited, it would be better than spending her summer with Petunia and Vernon - Petunia's boyfriend - he was the single most boring person one could ever meet and Lily found him to be a complete arse. He had a large moustache, a lot of neck, several chins and resembled - in Lily's opinion - a large whale, she generally referred to him as Petunia's pet whale which her Mother said was mean, Lily might care if Vernon was a nice person but he really wasn't, however he was all Petunia talked about for example:

"So glad to get away from Surrey for a bit" Petunia rambled on, "Vernon's hired a beautiful yacht for us to stay on" she boasted.

Lily contemplated whether it was wise to let Vernon on a yacht as he may sink it and that might ruin her sisters 'perfect' holiday. Lily thought it not wise to voice this however.

"I wish I lived in France, don't you?" Lily said after a while, breaking the silence.

Petunia laughed, not her normal cruel and mocking one but like a genuine laugh, "Why?" she said not taking her eyes off the road.

Lily shrugged, "Such a beautiful country, beautiful people, beautiful accents and a beautiful language. France is perfect" she paused, "I'm slightly jealous, I love France, I’m sure you'll have a lovely time" she admitted.

Petunia smiled, "Thanks" she said quietly. Lily knew that Petunia knew that Lily did not exactly love Vernon but Lily knew when Lily said stuff like that it made her sister feel happier.

Lily shrugged, "I'm the same as you, happy to relax with my friends before my last year at school" she said somewhat sadly - she did not want to finish Hogwarts.

"Oh yeah, your school" Petunia muttered darkly, she sounded very distant and cold now, "Sometimes I forget you're a freak". Lily winced but did not say anything.

They spent the final hour of the journey in silence; the radio broke the uncomfortable silence between the two sisters until the journey finally came to an end.

Petunia came to a stop outside a huge house, Lily looked at her sister, unsure whether they had the right address, and noticed her gaping - she didn't blame her. The house was beautiful, right by the ocean it had a gorgeous view of the sea and the beach, it had a long driveway that stretched felt like it stretched for miles, it seemed every window on the top two floors had a balcony and double doors leading out from the room. It was something out of a storybook it was extremely beautiful.

If Lily hadn't seen Mary's shiny black Porsche - a new birthday gift from her extremely rich Father - or known how much money her Father did have, he was a high paid film producer (a muggle), Lily would've accused Petunia of being at the wrong house.

"Do you know where Vernon's hotel is from here?" Lily asked after her sister helped her unload her bags from the car and onto the driveway which was practically empty. Remus's car wasn't here yet which would be carrying him and the other three Marauders.

Petunia nodded, "We passed it, just down the road. My bags are already there, he took them with him" she said again giving more information than was needed, "See you soon then freak" she muttered, turning down the driveway her blonde head stuck in the air, she paused and turned around, "I hope you have a lovely time too" she said softly - almost reluctantly before walking away again.

Lily was about to call something after her when she heard a door open and somebody call her name.

Mary MacDonald and Marlene McKinnon stood in the doorway to the beautiful house. Mary's long brown locks dancing in the breeze and Marlene's wavy dark blonde hair shining under the sun, they both grinned. Lily beamed at them. She grabbed her suitcase and ran to greet them.

"Hola" Mary grinned kissing her on the cheek, "and welcome to Casa De Mary" she beamed as Lily hugged Marlene.

"I can't believe you rented this place for Six weeks" Lily sighed happily as she pulled her suitcase inside and Marlene closed the door.

Mary shrugged and grinned, "There's nine bedrooms so we've all got one each, each have a balcony and most have a sea view but considering we're the first here we can grab the ones we want. Come on we'll show you the one we thought you'd like" she smiled.

The room really was beautiful with pale green and white striped wallpaper and a sea view it looked too good to be true, a large double bed that made you want to act like a child again and bounce up and down on it. The room was quite simple after that it had a desk, a wardrobe and a sofa with a television on the wall. Mary explained all the rooms were similar and Lily's room was next to Marlene's and probably one of the boys.

"Yeah they haven't arrived yet, they're late" Mary said dryly as the three of them sat in the kitchen drinking lemonade.

It was extremely hot and even though Lily was in denim shorts and a strappy top she felt like she could boil. Mary was slightly more practical, she was wearing a summer dress and Marlene was fashioning the same style as herself.

"I still cannot believe you invited the Marauders" Lily muttered.

Mary smiled, "You look positively thrilled to spend six weeks with James Potter" she teased.

Lily rolled her eyes, "Ecstatic"

"Be nice" Mary teased, and Lily poked her tongue out at her, "At least try to be civil and polite" she smiled, Lily paused before reluctantly nodding.

"They're only like that because they're boys" Marlene pointed out.

"And immature" Lily quipped.

"Remus isn't" Mary added, flicking through a copy of Witch Style? Idly.

"Touché" Lily said, sipping the rest of her lemonade.

"How did you get here?" Marlene asked staring out of the window.

Lily frowned, "By car Mar, um you saw me in the driveway"

Marlene looked up, coming out of her daze, "Of course, oops" she grinned; Lily rolled her eyes and smiled good naturedly at her dizzy friend, "When does Georgia get here?" Marlene asked changing the subject.

"Next week, she's gone to Ireland to visit her cousin who's a healer for a week... her mother thought it would be a good idea… give her an insight of what it'll be like when Gee trains to be one" Mary explained. Lily nodded.

Georgia was the only one out of her friends who wanted to train to be a healer; Mary wanted to work for the daily prophet whereas both Marlene and Lily wanted to join the Auror programme. She knew it was the same for the Marauders, James and Sirius were keen to join the Auror programme, Remus was for some reason undecided - which confused Lily as he was always so prepared - and Peter was hoping to work in magical law enforcement, according to Potter who had told her this one evening when she had been alone in the library and he had disrupted her studying.

"Suppose it makes sense" Marlene shrugged, "Anyway, Lily, when did you get your driver’s license? I know Mare got hers a few days ago, but you" she frowned.

"Easter holidays, Dad taught me when I came back for Petunia's wedding" she explained, Marlene nodded, she opened her mouth to say something but Lily could guess, "Remus got his at Christmas" she said dryly, Marlene nodded and smiled smugly at her before downing the rest of her lemonade.

About half an hour later Mary excused herself to her bedroom as she wanted to finish off a potions essay they had been given over summer before everyone else turned up. Marlene needed to go into town to buy a surfboard due to the fact every summer her cousin who was married to a muggle would teach her how to surf, but Marlene now wanted her own board. Lily declined the offer of joining her so she could look around the house.

After she had looked around she went back out to the driveway to park her car in the right place. As she pulled it up behind Mary's she heard a noise from behind her. She looked into her rear-view mirror, pulling up the driveway was a blue ford. It came to a halt and the doors swung open at the same time, even though she only had her widow open the voices carried:

"On the way back Prongs, you're sitting in the back" she heard one of them snap, "Bloody uncomfortable" he swore, he muttered something else that Lily did not hear.

"Shut your cake hole Padfoot, I got us here didn't I?" another one said heatedly, "Maybe you should drive next time"

The first boy sighed, "Moony, Moony. Me driving would be like Wormtail playing Quidditch and Prongs asking out Evans" he said and Lily glared even though she knew they couldn't see her, "A failure" he added, chortling slightly at his own joke.

"Do you ever shut up?" the boy named Prongs snapped, they continued to argue playfully until the boy named Moony interrupted:

"Come on, let’s go and take a look at this house" he said, pulling the two arguing boys towards the house.

Lily groaned and leant back in her seat. The Marauders had arrived.

Chapter Two - The Sleepless

Lily Evans was a very simple person, not simple as in ordinary and she was of course no way near boring. But she was simple, simple in what she liked, simple in what she disliked.

She liked hot chocolate in the winter and ice cold lemonade in the winter. She liked boys with a funny and entertaining personality but also with pretty eyes. She liked listening to The Beatles during her muggle summers but WrockGoblin during her times at Hogwarts. She enjoyed Chinese food in autumn and spring but favoured Indian or Italian in summer and winter.

She disliked coffee and had a strong dislike for diet coke. She had no interest in boys who were lazy and did nothing; she also did not have an attraction to boys with blonde hair as their hair colours clashed. She disliked rap music when she went home and since her sister found this out she had heard more and more of it. She also had no interest in the new singer Celestina Warbeck who was only about 18 from America; she was whiny and untalented in Lily's opinion. She hated Spanish food due to an unfortunate incident when she was younger, which she was not keen on talking about and her least favourite food was chicken casserole which now happened to be Petunia's favourite.

She had a far from simple personality. She was fierce and fiery; she took no crap from anyone and was completely sassy with anybody who got in her way or on her nerves. She was however sympathetic and understanding, her friends always said she was a great listener. She was very hardworking, the best witch in the school, top of their year and excelled at everything. But finally she was also very sensitive, and when somebody broke her trust it was hard for them to be trusted again, Severus Snape saw this.

Her looks were beyond simple, she had beautiful bright greens which glistened and shone in the sun, they lit up when somebody told her something exciting, but they didn't go dull when receiving bad news, they were always full of life. She had vivid red hair and pale skin, which caused her to blush quite a lot, but she didn't mind. She was average height and rather slim, but she did not have an athlete’s body, she was not sporty but she kept healthy.

She prided honesty, trust and bravery. She was the perfect example of the Hogwarts houses united. She was as brave as a Gryffindor, as clever as a Ravenclaw, as ambitious as a Slytherin and as loyal as a Hufflepuff. She was exceptionally brave and bright, but also kind and free spirited.

And all these things are why one would guess James Potter fell for the green eyed Gryffindor.

Lily of course just believed he was infatuated with her, she was something he could not have. Out of all the girls he had ever asked out she had been the only one who had ever said no, and this obviously bothered him so he continued to ask – as if that would convince her to say yes. However deep down she was always curious what else it must be, she knew it was deeper than infatuation but it was not until much later that she would realise she had known all along.

Of course she was none the wiser when he woke up the next morning and the first thing he thought of was the red headed girl who was sleeping only three doors down from his bedroom at Mary’s house.

Lily however woke up with a start and her first thought was most definitely not James, her first thought happened to be about the dream she had just experienced. She couldn’t really remember much of it, it wasn’t very clear now that she tried to think of it, a flash of green light and somebody thudding to the floor. She was very aware she had just experience a dream where somebody had been hit with the killing curse. The question was, who was it?

Lily shook herself and pulled herself up out of bed, she desperately tried to forget the dream as she stumbled towards her wardrobe, she debated having a shower but she knew they would probably be down at the beach today and thought it pretty pointless. She pulled on her green bikini and over it a pair of denim shorts and a white strappy top. She brushed out her long red hair and tied it in a loose bun before making her way out of the room and downstairs towards the kitchen.

It was about half past ten so Lily was certain Marlene would be up and awake, Mary might be if she was lucky and the marauders would probably be up too due to the fact they were early risers, well all except Sirius who liked to spend his morning in bed according to Remus who had told her on many a prefect duties about how much of an annoyance he was in the mornings.

As Lily entered the kitchen she was greeted with a happy surprise, Marlene, Mary and Remus were all sat around eating breakfast and there was no sign of Potter, Black or Peter.

“Morning” Marlene smiled looking up as did the rest of her friends who beamed at her, “I think there’s some bacon left on the grill and some toast, if you want to grab it?”

Lily nodded and made her way towards the cooker she piled her plate up as much as possible and joined her friends at the table, “So what are we doing today?” she asked.

“Beach” Mary grinned looking extremely happy, “That’s all I want to do is go to the beautiful beach and tan, tan, tan, tan” she repeated excitedly.

Marlene roll her eyes, “You’re such a girl” she said dragging each word out.

Remus chuckled, “That’s a good thing, surely?” he asked.

“Not in Marlene’s eyes” Lily pointed out grinning at her friend who shrugged, “Not being too girly anyway, but Mary thinks being too un-girly is unattractive and that’s why boys won’t date you, she says that’s why boys don’t fancy Marlene”

“I wouldn’t be so sure of that” Remus started to say but it turned into a mumble as the kitchen door opened again and in walked a very tired looking Sirius, he was rubbing his eyes and yawning but he had managed to get dressed and was wearing denim cut of jeans and a baggy white top.

“Morning” he yawned.

“Morning” Lily threw over her shoulder before her friends did the exact same thing and she turned back to Remus, “What did you say?” she asked, every head turned to look at him as Sirius grabbed a plate and sat himself down next to Marlene.

“Nothing” Remus frowned ripping off a piece of his toast and shoving it into his mouth.

Lily emulated his frown and continued, “Yeah you did, you said something like “I wouldn’t be so sure” what do you mean?” she said frowning once more.

Remus shifted uncomfortably he looked extremely annoyed with himself – as if he had given something away – as he looked around the room avoiding everyone’s gaze. His eyes quickly fell on Sirius who gave him a bemused look which Remus answered with a guilty looking one but Sirius didn’t seem to understand and merely stared at his best friend looking completely lost.

“What’s going on?” Marlene asked setting down her cutlery and looking between the two boys.

“Yeah explain to me too” Sirius pouted – he hated being left out of peoples conversations, Lily knew this too well as once herself, Remus, Mary and Peter had spent half an hour talking absolute rubbish trying to get Sirius to guess what they were on about.

Lily sighed, “I was explaining why Mary thought nobody would ever like Marlene and then Remus basically said not to be so sure of that” Lily said pondering this topic slightly, before: “So I’m confused, does someone like Marlene?” she asked raising her eyebrows and looking between Remus and Sirius who looked as if they were having a silent argument. Not that Lily cared much but it looked as if Sirius was winning.

“Wait what?” both Mary and Marlene chorused.

“Some boy likes her and not me?” Mary said looking extremely put out.

“Don’t be so sure it’s a boy” Lily teased and Marlene shot her a glare, “What’s going on?” Lily whined turning back to Remus.

He looked back at her – breaking eye contact with Sirius who looked triumphant – Remus grinned loftily and said: “Nothing, just mis chose my words” he said reassuringly, “nothing was implied, I meant somebody might like Marlene how does Mary know” he shrugged.

Marlene looked slightly disappointed and her eyes lingered on Sirius who was sat next to her as if she was waiting for him to add something, of course he didn’t he just shoved another mouthful of bacon sandwich into his mouth and started drumming his fingers against the table. But before Lily or Mary could find some sort of retort to Remus’s counter argument the kitchen door opened for a final time.

“Food” Came the grunt of a half asleep James Potter who was almost being carried by an annoyed looking Peter Pettigrew.

“Grill” Mary said pointing to the stove, Mary still looked a bit miffed she hated not being told things and it was almost obvious the boys were keeping something.

James made his way over to the stove whilst Peter joined them at the table, “Morning boys” Sirius grinned, “How many sickles did it cost Prongs for you you to carry him down here then Wormtail?” Sirius teased.

“Oh shut up” Peter snapped but Sirius raised his eyebrows at him before: “Fine nine sickles and two knuts” he said almost reluctantly.

Sirius exploded into laughter and grabbed his side as he went red, Lily rolled her eyes at his immaturity and cut herself a bit of bacon off whilst Sirius continued, “You’re becoming a sellout mate, surely you charge at least two galleons now”

“Need I repeat myself?” Peter sighed, “Shut up Padfoot” Sirius merely grinned and ruffled his friends mousy hair just as James stumbled towards the table and plonked himself down next to Remus who grinned at his friend knowingly.

“You and Padfoot went out last night” he stated not even bothering to question it, Lily frowned and looked at Marlene and Mary who looked just as she shocked as she did. It was impossible they had all been together until about half past twelve surely Potter and Black hadn’t gone out afterwards.

But of course when Sirius nodded this threw Lily’s thoughts straight out of the window, “How did you know?” Sirius grinned – he looked a lot more cheerful than Potter.

“You both came down looking grumpy, tired and to be frank like shit” Remus smirked and Sirius grinned whilst James let out a groan and flung his head onto the table.

“Well he can’t go to the beach like that” Mary remarked standing up and cleaning up the plates from the table.

‘Of course leave it to Mary to say something sensible and actually care what happens to Potter whilst I just sit here and roll my eyes at his stupidity to go out and get obviously completely wasted’ Lily thought bitterly. It was true Lily thought Mary was being far to caring, she was only suggesting he
stayed in but for Lily that was like kissing him she was being that nice, thinking about his health. Lily didn't know if Potter didn't come to the beach he would be out of her way but then if he stayed here he would get better and thus be able to come to the beach tomorrow.

"Well" Sirius said snapping Lily out of her daydreams, "Someone's got to look after him" he said in a motherly manner stroking James's hair as his best friend still led with his head on the table.

"You can Padfoot" Remus suggested about to stand up, but Lily pulled him back down - he wasn't getting out of it that easily.

"Oh no" Sirius said a glint in his eyes, "Names in a hat" he grinned, his gaze falling on Lily. She gulped slightly she did not like the mischievous look Sirius was wearing, she knew what the outcome would be and she was not happy about it.

Five minutes later they had all put their names in the bowl Mary had found, nobody actually had a hat on them at that particular moment so they had substituted with a bowl. James still had his head on the table and was snoring softly now which Lily found extremely unnerving and she was not sure why. Anyway, Sirius pulled out his wand and flicked it a few times so the names mixed up and after doing this a few times which Lily found extremely tedious to watch he finally flicked his wand upwards and a piece of paper flicked out.

"I wonder who" he smirked, before opening the paper, he stared at it for a while before grinning and raising his eyebrows, "congrats Evans" he smirked.

no, no, no, no, no, no, that was not happening, she was not being James Potter's servant for the day and she was not taking care of him, no way.

Yes she was

Because half an hour later all her friends had left for the beach even after she had begged Marlene and Mary to stay with her but they didn't after making up stupid excuses and leaving with the three boys. Remus an Sirius had dragged James into his bed and he had fallen asleep instantly but yet Lily was still stuck in the house all day as James Potter's nurse. Great.

Chapter Three - A Terrible Accident

Lily sat with her knees pulled up to her chest in the corridor outside James Potter’s bedroom, she sighed as she flipped the page of Witch Weekly. Same old, nothing really changed in the celebrity part of the wizarding world.

Celestina Warbeck was engaged, which Marlene would find ridiculous she would not be able to believe that somebody would marry somebody with a voice as whiny as Celestina’s. Mary of course would be absolutely thrilled of the fact that her favourite singer was now engaged to an all-star Quidditch player Ryan Roaches, who played for puddlemere united and, according to Witch Weekly, was voted the most successful player of 1976.

Lily flicked over the next page and a piece of paper fell out of it, it looked like a hand scribbled note. She turned it over onto the side where the messy write was. She muttered the message to herself:

Evans
I found your copy of witch weekly, never knew you were into who got who pregnant and which witch wore it better.
Anyway…
I was wondering if maybe you would like to accompany me on a date to the beautiful muggle village in which we reside in tomorrow evening.
Think it over, you don’t have to answer straight away.
Love
-J

Lily’s first initial thought was to rip the letter up, burn it and then flush the ashes of it down the toilet and then maybe do the exact same thing to James Potter but she calmed herself for a moment. Why must he be so infuriating? Hadn’t he got it through his stupid head that over the past three years of him asking her out she wasn’t going to change her mind.

See his “crush” started probably around second year but he started asking her to dates and out in third year, this continued somewhat religiously every single day sometimes twice or three times a day and the answer would always be the same, “Were you dropped on your head as a baby Potter? Why the hell would I?” Harsh? Yes. Truthful? Always.

She stood up and flung her magazine to the ground, she didn’t care whether he was still drunk or whether he had a hangover or not she was angry and he was going to hear her shout at him and she did not care whether it gave him a headache or not.

She pushed open the door and it hit the wall with a bang, James sat bolt upright instantly, he looked around wearily and rubbed his eyes which finally landed on a furious looking Lily who was stood in the doorway holding his stupid little scrap of paper. He groaned before flopping back down on the bed and putting his head in the pillow.

“Why must you be so infuriating?” she said loudly, trying to stop herself from shouting at him.

“Go away” he mumbled into his pillow before rubbing his head.

She laughed coldly, “Oh no, you’re going to sit up and hear this Potter” she said moving towards his bed and yanking him by the arms and pulling him into a sitting position, he rested his head on the headboard and looked at her sleepily.

“That’s alright Lils I like it when my girls are tough with me” he grinned, he looked completely out of it though, probably still half drunk.

She shook her head and widened her eyes at him, “Oh no, don’t you dare call me your girl James Potter, I am not your girl, I never will be” she thundered, her eyes ablaze with anger.

“You won’t be saying that on our wedding day” he smirked closing his eyes.

She smacked him hard on the shoulder, he flinched and groaned softly but she paid no attention to this “Shut up” she snapped, “Do you really have to keep doing this?” she snarled pointing to the note before flicking it at him, “Can’t you remember the talk we had at the end of this year” she sighed.

“Hey! Evans, Evans wait” somebody called behind her, Lily turned clutching her books to her chest, she was making her way to Arithmancy a class in which she did not take with either Marlene, Georgia nor Mary so she was alone and by the looks of it so was James Potter. For some reason he took the class too and what annoyed her much more was that he was good at it.

“What?” she frowned, she did not particularly enjoy his company, he was annoying. He had calmed down a lot this year she had to admit, possibly grown up during the summer at the end of fifth year but he was still asking her out all the time and pulling stupid pranks with his friends, which she thought was ridiculous. But he did not bully students anymore, which was a plus. Well not for her, it gave her less things to complain about and less reasons to dislike him.

“Well” he said awkwardly as he caught up with her, he ran his hands through his already messy hair and made it worse, she had to stop herself from rolling her eyes, “I mean it’s the last Hogsmeade weekend this weekend before we break up for the summer and well I mean-” did he actually look nervous? She couldn’t believe it, “Well do you want to go with me?” he finally spluttered out.

She raised her eyebrows she was about to give some really horrible, snappy retort on why she would never ever go to Hogsmeade with him, but something changed. She noticed the hope in his eyes as they darted around nervously, she realised how nervous he actually was – which was a pleasant change from cocky James Potter.

“No” she said softly, he nodded slowly – as if he had been expecting it, she couldn’t blame him. “Look Potter, aren’t you ready to give it up yet?” she said smiling sadly, “I’ve been saying no for almost three years, I’m not going to have a sudden change of heart…” he went to interrupt but she continued to talk, “yeah I know you’ve grown up but honestly James you’re still conceited, and immature. A person doesn’t just lose that. Look I’m sorry ok but it’s a no, and it will always be a no” she said quietly trying not to sound too harsh because for once she actually felt bad for turning him down.

He shrugged and attempted a grin, before shoving his hands in his trouser pockets and continuing to walk on leaving her standing there feeling completely helpless and guilty, “Potter” she called, he turned around, she walked towards him, “I mean maybe, we could try and get along. I mean this summer we’re going to all be at Mary’s, I really don’t want to be at your throat all summer” she sighed attempting to start a truce.

He smiled and nodded, “I promise I won’t ask you out every five minutes if you don’t scream at me for every little thing I do” he smirked.

She rolled her eyes, “Deal” she sighed, he chuckled. That was the last they said to each other before the term ended.

“I believe I said every five minutes, I haven’t asked you out since then” he grinned his voice weak and sleepy sounding, she hit him lightly on the shoulder again, he groaned.

She frowned, “Why in the name of Merlin do you kept wincing and groaning whenever I lightly tap you on the shoulder?”

“Lightly?” he chuckled, “Godric Evans there’s nothing light about the way you smack” he tried to joke, but Lily noticed he wasn’t making eye contact with her. He was lying.

“Take off your shirt” she demanded.

He raised his eyebrows at her, “We’re moving a bit fast aren’t we Evans? I like to get to know a girl before this happens” he smirked, she snorted as she was positive that was not true due to his history of girlfriends.

“Take off your shirt Potter” she said firmly, he stared at her to see if she was going to crack, analysing the situation he finally sighed and pulled his black t-shirt over his head.

Lily’s first reaction was too gasp. Along the back of his shoulder was a large slash which was blood red, it ran all the way down his back on the front of his stomach was a large bruise which looked as if he had been punched in the stomach quite a few times. James looked down at his own body and winced before looking back up at the ceiling.

“James” she murmured moving to sit on the bed next facing him, “What happened?” she asked softly, running her fingers along the bruise tracing it, it was a huge bruise, he flinched as her fingers traced it and she extracted them immediately, blushing, but also realising she was causing him more pain.

“Fell over?” he offered, grinning, but it didn’t quite reach his eyes.

“I swear to Godric James if you don’t tell me I’m telling Sirius, Remus and Peter” she threatened.

His eyes widened, “No you can’t, they weren’t there. They don’t know, leave them out of it” he said quickly and probably a little harsher than he intended.

“What happened?” she repeated quietly.

So he explained, he explained how Sirius had left the pub at around two as it was closing and had refused to go to an all-night bar down the road, James had said he’d be back in an hour which led to Sirius leaving without even looking back. James had actually left the bar at four in the morning; it was still dark as he made his way down some dark alleyways still pretty drunk trying to find his way back to the house. He looked down the alleyway and had seen a few people in long black cloaks, he was pretty sure by that time they were not muggle nor particularly kind. But before he could run one of them aimed their wand at him and that’s when the large cut happened, the spell wasn’t as strong as it could’ve been but James had fallen to the floor, a few seconds later one of them came along and kicked him in the stomach a few times before they all disappeared. He wasn’t really sure how he had managed to get back to the house, he had tried the best he can to apparate in the state he was in and trying to remember desperately what the house looked like in his intoxicated brain. Sirius hadn’t waited up and everyone else was in bed so he didn’t wake anyone.

“You’re an idiot” Lily sighed, “Why wouldn’t you wake anyone up?” He shrugged, “Potter you could have died in your sleep” she snapped.

He managed a weak smile, “Nice to see you concerned about me for once” he said weakly.

She sighed and shook her head before standing up, “I’ve got some dittany in my bag, I’ll be back in a second” she said before departing the room. A few minutes later she was back and the dittany was being dripped upon James Potter’s wounds.

They sat there in silence as Lily tended to his wounds, he winced every so often as she dripped a bit more dittany onto the large lacerate on his back but he did not complain which she was thankful for, it was easier for her to do this without him saying anything.

“Lily” he said softly after a few minutes and she looked up at him, “I really am sorry about the note” he sighed leaning back on the headboard as she placed the dittany on the bedside table.

She shrugged, “Well I’m really sorry about hitting you so we can call it quits right” she said lightly standing up.

He pulled himself up a little more and groaned slightly, “I was wondering, I know we said we’d try and get along this summer, but I don’t know. Maybe we could try and be friends” she eyed him curiously and he continued, “like if I promise to keep my promise” he said actually grinning this time.

She smiled slightly, “but will you” she said raising her eyebrows, he nodded, “I’ll keep mine too” she smiled.

“And um, thanks, for this” he said quietly, “I mean considering I’m kind of a toerag to you, you didn’t have too” he said smiling faintly.

“Yes I did, because if I didn’t I wouldn’t really appreciate being hexed to death by your best friend if he found out I didn’t do anything” she grinned and he chuckled slightly.

“You won’t tell them right?” he asked, she shook her head, “thanks” he added.

She shrugged, “Your choice, it’s not my business to do so” she turned away, “I’ll be outside the door if you need me, you need sleep” she told him, he nodded, she opened the door and turned around one last time, “James” he looked up, “do you know who it was?” she asked trying to keep the curiosity out of her voice and trying to provide a casual tone.

“Yeah, yeah I do” he said, but the tone of his voice led her to believe that he didn’t really feel like telling her or talking about it anymore so she gave him one last nod, “thanks by the way”

“For?” she asked, he had already thanked her.

“Calling me James” he murmured before turning over and closing his eyes, she stood in the doorway frozen for a few minutes before he started snoring softly.

Chapter One - Change Our Mind

The sun came up that morning illuminating colours of oranges and yellows as it rose into the fading pink sky, it was beautiful, a picturesque scene, Lily almost wished she had a camera to capture this perfect moment.

Most people were in bed at half past five in the morning, but Lily had been sat on this cliff overlooking the shimmering sea for an hour as the sun rose. She hadn't exactly been able to sleep, her mind whirring, busy and to be honest she just needed to empty it and sitting on a cliff at half five in complete silence only the sound of the sea breaking the silence that would later be filled with shouts and laughter from the beach bellow, it was sort of relaxing. Until:

"You're not planning on jumping right?" somebody said sitting down next to her, legs dangling over the edge of the cliff.

She rolled her eyes and ignored the comment, "Everything's just such a mess" she admitted after a few moments silence, her companion nodded either in agreement or in understanding, after yesterday’s events it was probably in both.

“One strawberry milkshake please” Lily said smiling politely at the boy stood behind the drinks stand, he nodded before turning around to make her drink.

Merlin it was a hot day, thankfully today she had managed to be able to go the beach with her friends, James was at the house claiming he was still ill from the other day. The rest of them had gone to the beach and Remus had promised to come up and check on him in the afternoon, of course Lily was still the only one who knew what was really wrong with James Potter.

“He’s cute” Marlene muttered in her ear before sipping loudly on her chocolate milkshake the pair of them had made their way up the beach and toward a drinks stand at the top of the beach whilst Mary tanned and Sirius, Remus and Peter were in the sea.

Lily rolled her eyes, “That’s something Mary would say” she pointed out.

Marlene made a choking noise, and without even looking at her Lily could assume she choked on her chocolate milkshake but her friend did not say anything else as Lily was handed her milkshake, she smiled and paid the boy in muggle money before making her way back down the beach.

“So how was yesterday with James?” Marlene asked.

Lily sighed and shrugged, “It was fine; he slept the whole day we barely talked”

“Barely?” Marlene asked a hint of suspicion in her voice.

“Yeah when he woke up at one point we talked” Lily said simply kicking a beach ball out of her way idly. A little kid shouted out in protest and cursed her under his breath before running down the beach to retrieve his ball but Lily barely noticed.

“About?” Marlene said trying to get her to elaborate in the most unsubtle way possible.

“Oh come on Marlene, about barely anything, we just sort of agreed we’d try to get along this summer, I don’t know why you always think it’s so exciting when me and Potter talked” Lily said slightly disgruntled.

Marlene shrugged, “Just waiting for you to finally be friends”

“Why?”

“I don’t know, I guess I know he’s always wanted that”

Lily snorted, “No he’s wanted something else”

“You’d be surprised Lily how much he’s willing to do just for your friendship” Marlene said before sitting herself down next to Mary.

Lily didn’t say anything else but she did sit there in silence whilst Mary and Marlene argued about whether Mary should trust anything in witch weekly, of course Mary couldn’t stand somebody arguing against witch weekly and Marlene thought it was a stupid magazine which made teenage witches look pathetic.

Merlin Lily couldn’t wait until Georgia got here, even though Lily found herself always closest to Marlene she couldn’t stand listening to Mary and Marlene argue over things they both thought they were right in and Georgia usually managed to get them both to shut up.

“What do you think Lily?” Mary said snapping her out of her thoughts and bringing her back to argumentative reality.

“Hmm?” Lily said not really too bothered.

“What do you think?” Mary said shooting her a 'be on my side or no side' look, sadly Marlene shot her the same look.

“I don’t really care” Lily said truthfully before laying herself down on the towel.

Mary sighed obviously exasperated and continued to argue her case to Marlene who was trying to talk over her now every time she made a point. Eventually Marlene shut her up by saying something like if you carry on arguing you’ll get stress lines on your forehead. Marlene was obviously pleased with herself and Mary was obviously annoyed so she led down next to Lily and pointedly opened up her copy of witch weekly and started reading aloud.

“Superstar singing sorceress sensation Celestina Warbeck has announced that she will be writing, in her own words, a truly breath-taking next album as soon as her wedding was over with” Mary said her voice filled with happy hope.

“Arrogant” Marlene muttered under her breath and Lily snorted quietly.

“Ooh look, Gilderoy Lockhart has admitted that he once tried out for male modelling in the muggle modelling industry but decided fighting monsters and saving the wizarding world was a better for career for him” Mary sighed contently, “he’s so perfect, and his eyes, as blue as the sea if you ask me, he could definitely be a model, such a hero”

“He’s only a few years older than us, how has he done so much stuff in the three years he’s been gone from Hogwarts?” Lily asked curiously.

Mary sighed again, “Who cares how he’s done it? Nobody questions hum because he’s so brave and gorgeously handsome, why was he not a Gryffindor, so much courage” she contemplated.

Lily snorted and lay back down on the towel, the hot sun shining on her back. A few metres down the three boys were still in the sea, laughing and joking. The sun shone on the sea making it sparkle beautiful colours of blue, Cornwall on days like these looked like a sunny paradise.

“Oh my Godric” Mary squealed, “Gilderoy’s doing a book signing for his first book, in Diagon alley in four weeks, oh we have to-”

But her excited squeals were broken off by Marlene’s exclamation of: “Oh my god”

“I know isn’t it exciting?” Mary said happily.

“No not that” Marlene said sounding distracted, Lily sat up and looked at her best friend, “Lily isn’t that..” Marlene continued her mouth wide open. Lily followed her gaze across the beach and her eyes fell on a tall boy with short blonde hair and sea blue eyes, he was carrying a surf board and had that typical gorgeous, surfer look.

“Thomas” she finished for Marlene, Mary sat up instantly and swivelled around to follow Lily’s eyes. The wizard noticed them staring at him before waving and making his way over to their collection of bags and towels, “What is he doing here?” Lily hissed.

“Shouldn’t you be pleased?” Marlene teased.

“I sure am” Mary smirked eyeing the wizard happily, Lily rolled her eyes.

Lily glared at them both, “I thought I broke up with him” she muttered before standing up slowly to greet Thomas Dicaro.

Thomas placed his surf board on the ground before grinning at Lily and wrapping his arms around her neck and pulling her in for a hug, she reluctantly hugged him back before pulling away quickly and smiling slightly at him.

“Tom, what are you doing here?” she smiled politely.

The thing was with Tom, they had gone out since November last year and broken up about two weeks ago, he was extremely sweet and kind at first but then he started to get too clingy and every time she spent time with anybody else he’d get jealous and over protective. He started walking her to every lesson and picking her up from every lesson, he’d walk her to meals, to the common room. He was a Ravenclaw so when she had been in the common room, he thankfully couldn’t come in, she had spent the last week of their relationship hiding in the common room as a refuge and now he was here and she knew exactly what he thought.

They had just had a falling out.

“Wanted to surprise my girlfriend” he smiled, kissing her softly on the cheek, she widened her eyes at Marlene who was smirking slightly, “Hey Mary, Marlene” he smiled, “Where’s Georgia?”

“She’ll be here soon, she’s not coming down for a while, she’s busy” Mary pointed out, “How are you Tom? You look good” she said batting her eyelashes. Lily rolled her eyes, Mary found Tom extremely annoying but she found him extremely satisfying to look at.

“Great thanks” he said turning back to Lily, “How are you love, I missed you” he said kissing her cheek again, she pulled a face instinctively luckily he did not see but Mary did and she smirked at Marlene who was biting back a snort.

“Yeah I’m fine” Lily said waving his question away, “Um look Thomas, perhaps you didn’t get it when I said-”

“Is that Remus Lupin, Sirius Black and Peter Pettigrew?” Tom said ignoring her and frowning looking downwards the beach. Lily followed his gaze and sure enough the three boys were making their way back from the sea.

“Uh yeah, we’re kind of here with them” Lily said slipping out of Thomas’s grasp.

He frowned, “You came on holiday with three out of the four Marauders”

“Um no” Marlene said looking up from her magazine ‘It’s Quidditch’, “We came on holiday with four out of four of the Marauders” she corrected. Lily’s biggest task at that moment was to stop herself from smirking whilst Tom looked extremely bothered.

But before he could say anything in retort the Marauders had finally made their way back to the towels and were eyeing Tom curiously. Lily couldn’t help but notice Marlene stare a little too long at a shirtless Sirius before blushing slightly and looking away, Mary had her eyebrows raised at Marlene making Lily realise she wasn’t the only one who had noticed.

“Thomas” Remus said smiling, he looked slightly confused, “What brings you here?” he asked politely. Ah Remus always the gentleman.

“I knew Lily was here for the summer, so I thought I’d surprise my beautiful girlfriend” he smiled wrapping an arm around her again.

“I thought she dumped you” Sirius said with a mouthful of crisps, Lily shot him a look and he let out a low whistle. Thomas either didn’t hear him or out rightly ignored his comment.

“Right, so are you gonna show me where you’re staying?” Thomas asked happily.

And yes, half an hour later the six of them, plus Thomas had made their way up towards Mary’s house. Thomas stared at it in awe, commenting on how big and grand it was, Lily rolled her eyes a few times and Mary kept smirking at her.

Mary led them all into the house and Thomas was still looking around completely stunned by how grand it was. Sirius and Peter disappeared the kitchen promising to grab some food, Remus and Thomas followed the girls into the lounge.

“It’s magnificent” Thomas was saying, Lily didn’t get how he could be so star struck after living at Hogwarts for six years, “Beautiful, just massive”

“Would you all shut up” somebody shouted from above them, they all looked up, they had just been passing under the stairs, “I’m trying to fucking sleep” James snapped angrily. Lily sighed relieved that he had shut Thomas up for two minutes.

“Sorry Prongs” Remus yelled, “We’ll be quiet” he added before gesturing them forward and back into the lounge.

“What’s up with him?” Thomas frowned. Of course like most boys Lily dated he had never been keen on James Potter due to the fact that James Potter had been, or still was – however you wanted to put it, was extremely infatuated with her and this led to jealousy and resentment from the boys she dated.

Lily shrugged, “He’s not feeling very well” she said as she sat herself down next to Marlene on the sofa. Thomas obviously sitting on her other side. He draped his arm around her shoulders, instantly making her feel like she had no escape whatsoever.

They sat and talked for about ten minutes before Sirius and Peter finally entered the living room with crisps and biscuits. The living room was probably one of the largest rooms in the house, with crisp white walls and a wooden floor, it had three sofas which were all quite long and were a black leather, it had a single brown coffee table in the middle of the room and in one of the corners was an old muggle television. But Lily’s favourite part about the lounge was the large pair of doors that opened up onto a beautiful patio filled with lots of different types of flowers and a swing chair that overlooked the large garden.

Lily shifted a bit in her seat but this only caused Thomas to tighten his grip around her before kissing her, again, on the cheek but not as soft as before. She wriggled slightly and loosened herself before standing up. Everyone looked at her.

“Just going to the toilet” she said smiling, rolling her eyes slightly in a way to tell them that they didn’t need to be so paranoid that something was wrong, a girl could go and pee surely? Wrong.

She did not go to the toilet she made her way upstairs however it was not to go the bathroom, for some reason she found herself knocking on James Potter’s bedroom door.

“What?” she heard him groan from inside the door, she instantly felt guilty.

“Uh it’s me, can I come in?” she said awkwardly.

“Sure” he replied slowly before she opened the bedroom door.

His room looked as if he hadn’t left it the day before, it was messier but it looked like he had been hibernating in there for quite a few months.

She smiled awkwardly and made her way over to him, he was sat up in his bed, his hair everywhere and he looked extremely tired.

“Sorry did I wake you?”

He shook his head, “Nah you all did, about fifteen minutes ago” he said grinning loftily.

She bit her lip, “Sorry” she smiled, he shrugged, they sat in silence for a few moments, “Um, well I just came to see how your injuries were, considering you’ve got nobody else checking on them” she said laughing slightly, he nodded and smiled.

“Thanks Lily” he said quietly before pulling off his top.

She stared for a moment, the bruise on his stomach had gone a purple colour and still looked extremely sore. He coughed awkwardly and she looked up at a smirking James Potter.

“You know Evans if you want to stare at my body all you have to do is ask” he teased.

She clucked her tongue impatiently, “You know for somebody who said they were going to try and get along with me, you’re still being exceedingly arrogant” she snapped.

“It’s my charm” he offered.

“So very un-charming ” she quipped.

“You love it”

“I honestly can’t say I do Potter”

“Ah we’re back to Potter are we Evans?”

“Back to Evans are we Potter?”

“This is going to turn into a vicious circle”

“I’ve got all day”

“I haven’t I could die of blood loss”

“Don’t be so over dramatic”

“Says you who practically fainted when she saw my wounds yesterday”

“That’s an over statement”

“Don’t scoff at me Lily Evans”

“I’ll do what I please”

“Would you please do me”

“I swear to Merlin Potter I will smack you”

“Where?”

“JAMES”

“Thank you Lily

She sighed, “Turn around, let me see your back” he nodded, still grinning.

It looked a lot better than yesterday, it wasn't as red as it had been before it was a fading pink, obviously the dittany had been working. The bruise on his stomach looked worse than the mark on his back.

She voiced this to him and he seemed to agree before pulling his t-shirt back on. He sighed slightly and leant against the headboard and smiled at her.

"What?" she asked slowly eyeing him curiously, sinking down on the bed.

He shrugged, a smirk playing upon his lips, "We can't go five minutes without arguing, no matter what we say we're going do"

"Oh come on Potter we can go five minutes" She retorted.

"Nah we can't" he quipped.

"Yes we can" she said heatedly.

"Can't" he smirked, laughing slightly.

"Can" she said in a sing song voice.

"What's going on here?" came a cold voice from the doorway.

Lily turned around instantly, she didn't realise she was sat so close to James because her hair accidentally flicked him in the face as she turned around. He winced but she didn't notice.

"What are you doing here?" Lily said trying to smile.

"You've been gone almost twenty minutes" Tom said coolly.

James sat up straightaway and frowned, "What the hell is he doing here"

Crap, Lily forgot James had a massive problem with Thomas. Thomas is the house captain for the Ravenclaw Quidditch team and last year in the Gryffindor vs Ravenclaw game Thomas - who is a beater - "accidently" aimed a bludger at the Gryffindor seekers head, aiming above the neck was against the rules. James insisted it was on purpose but Thomas denied it, the match continued with a replacement seeker Gryffindor lost 320 to 50. Ever since both James and Thomas have done whatever they can to show each other up.

"I'm here to see my girlfriend" Thomas retorted smoothly, "What are you doing here Potter?"

"I was invited unlike you" oh James Potter always a truthful one, he paused and then frowned, "what do you mean girlfriend?" James said glaring at him.

"Lily, my girlfriend"

"Now wait just a se-" Lily tried to interrupt.

James growled, "I thought you broke up with him" he snapped turning on her, "You told everyone you had" he fired up.

"James you need to calm down" she said softly, putting her hands on his chest and pushing him slowly down and back against the headboard before standing up.

"James" Thomas scoffed, "how many times did you have to get her to shag you Potter before she would first name you" Thomas sneered.

Lily widened her eyes and him and gaped before making a move to slap him, but Thomas grabbed her hands, "Come Lily, James Potter really how could you sink so low?"

"Oh please" Lily scoffed, "We're barely friends, let alone sleepin together"

"I can make you happy, You stay with him and you'll just be another one of his sluts" Thomas said in a derogatory tone, a tone she had barely heard him use before. He had never been cruel - not to her.

Before she could retort a quick and swift movement of the hands landed Thomas on the floor. Lily whipped around the minute she realised she wasn't the one who hit him, James was stood there trembling with anger whilst Thomas led on the floor.

"Potter" she hissed dropping to the floor by Thomas's side. He was led on the floor clutching his nose where James's punch had hit him.

"He called you a slut Lily and you were going to stand there and take it" James snarled.

"He was angry, you didn't have to punch him" she shrieked. She pulled some tissue out of her pocket and dabbed it over Tom's nose.

"Oh don't make excuses for him" James snapped.

"I'm not you only punched him because you have this pathetic grudge because of Quidditch" she retorted coldly.

"No Lily, this isn't my problem, you let people walk all over because you hate seeing the bad in people" he said coolly, "But you know sometimes you don't try and look for the good in some people either"

That's where they had left it, Lily had said nothing more she had pulled Thomas up and taken him into the spare room where he slept for a bit. After that she sort of avoided both him and James before going to bed.

It had been a restless night and now she was here sat on the side of a cliff staring out into the early morning with James Potter who wasn't the best company when she was angry with him.

"What am I going to do?" she sighed, looking sideways at him for the first time since he had joined her that morning.

He shrugged, "I don't know" he admitted.

She snorted, "Top advice there Potter"

"What can I say it's not easy being a genius" he smirked, his glasses were crooked, she didn't why she noticed but she did.

"Yeah, genius, that's the word" she teased.

He laughed slightly and smiled at her, "So we're ok?" he asked, she nodded, "even though I punched your boyfriend"

"Oh god, my boyfriend" she groaned laying down on the grass, "my boyfriend, there was a reason I broke up with him, is he an idiot?" she whined.

James chuckled and lay down next to her, "You just need to talk to him I suppose, maybe be a bit harsh" she nodded and sighed slightly, they sat in silence for a few minutes.

"James?"

"Hmm?"

"How did you know I was here?" she asked turning her head on the grass to face him, even in the little amount of morning light she could've sworn he blushed.

"I left when you did, I was -um- worried something might happen" he shrugged.

Ok that was rather sweet, and she had basically yelled that they weren't even friends when he had gone out of his way to look out for her.

"Thank you" she smiled, he just shrugged.

"What are friends for" he said as the warm, orange sun finally rose fully and a beautiful golden light shone over the beach bellow them.
