Chapter 1: Remembering
[Printer Friendly Version of This Chapter]

"Hermione!" Mum yelled up the stairs. "Time to get up so you won't miss the train!"

I sat up so fast, remembering that today was the first day I get to see my friends in over 3 months. I jump out of bed and got the clothes I had laid out the night before. Deciding to go with something simple; jeans and a deep blue cami with my grey booties. I went across the hall to the bathroom to brush my teeth and take a quick shower.

I headed downstairs to eat the wonderful breakfast Mum had spent all morning making since she knew I never had much time to eat on these sort of days.

"We have to leave in 10 minutes!" Mum said as I entered the kitchen.

"After I eat we can be on our way." I replied with a smile and sat down next to Dad after kissing his cheek good morning. "Are you excited for your last year, honey?" Dad asked.

"Oh yes, it's going to be wonderful. The possibilities are endless and I am hoping to become head girl!" I answered barely able to contain my excitement as I bit into my croissant and buttered my pancakes.

"Of course you're gonna become head girl they would be crazy not to appoint you!" Mum replied.

I've been wondering who would be appointed head boy and hoping it would be Harry or Ron. I can't imagine spending my entire 7th year with anyone else. No use in worrying about something I'll have the answer to by the end of the day though. We ended up getting there later than we had planned to be so there wasn’t much time to board the train. I didn’t want what happened to Harry and Ron in second year to happen to me, I laughed inwardly.

I placed my belongings on the trolley, kissed Mum and Dad goodbye, and was off to my last year at Hogwarts.

My parents had been a little distant since I replaced their memory back in Australia. I was hoping some time would do them some good but they have yet to say anything about it. Maybe over the course of the school year they will get back to their normal, loving selves.

I boarded the train and the first person I saw was Malfoy. Those intensifying silver eyes were staring straight at me. Before he could do or say anything I quickly went to put my luggage with the others and found a vacant compartment.

Shock.

That was all I felt when the memories came back to me.

I doubled over and clutched my stomach as the horrifying repeating memories, I had no way to stop, came back.

I was in the Malfoy Manor being tortured by none other Bellatrix Lestrange.

"Crucio!" she spat out.

I tried with all my will not to scream.

To not let what they wanted happen.

To hear my pain.

They feed on pain.

I locked eyes with piercing silver eyes. They flashed  from disgust to pain and ending with extreme concern. I wasn't sure what the disgust was aimed at, Lestrange or me. I don't know why, but I had a feeling that it was towards his aunt.

He just stood there and watched as I was almost tortured into insanity.

Those eyes haunted me for a long time after the war.

I got up off the floor of the empty compartment and remembered that it was in the past and I needed to move forward with my life. I didn’t want to bother the boys or Ginny with the knowledge of my reoccurring flashbacks since they had enough they have to deal with themselves.

I walked out to go find Harry, Ron, and Ginny.

I could hear the bickering between the brother and sister. I laughed to myself. Some things never change.

I open the compartment door and walk in with a semi forced smile considering my mind was still reeling from the memory. Ron and Ginny were too distracted with whatever they were arguing about this time to see that I had entered, but Harry saw me.

"Hey Harry!" I exclaimed with a smile.

"Mione! I'm so happy to see you!" he hugged me.

"You would think they could stop fighting for 5 minutes to see their best friend whom they haven't seen all summer," I said to him loudly enough so Gin and Ron could hear me. It worked. They stopped and finally noticed me.

"Hey Hermione!" they both said at the same time and practically strangled me with a hug.

"Guys, can't breathe here." Once I was able to breathe again, I asked, "How was your summer?"

We sat there and talked about the summer, how Harry had finally confessed his love for Ginny, and how they thought the upcoming year would be like.

Everything we’ve been though, it seemed at that moment in time, I would be able to get through the constant nightmares and terror I still felt from the war.

The constant fame of Harry beating Voldemort and being a part of the Golden Trio reminded me that we had done the deed.

The constant worries of Voldemort were over which means we can finally get back to our lives.

And I was happy for the moment.

Chapter 2: Times Change
[Printer Friendly Version of This Chapter]

I opened my eyes to see my curtain draped around my four poster bed. I remembered today we start classes. A burst of excitement flew through me. I smiled and grabbed my shower bag and skipped off to the bathroom to start my day.

The strawberry scent of my conditioner drifted to my nose. I guess I could say that it reminded me of home. I just relaxed as the water poured down from the shower head. Even though I didn't get head girl, I will still make it the best year. Nothing can stop me now.

By the time I got out of the shower more of the girls were starting to wake up and get ready for the day ahead. I put on my uniform and with that I grabbed my backpack and headed down to the common room to wait for Harry, Ginny, and Ron.

Ginny was already down there since she's a morning person. I will never understand how anyone could be a morning person. I need to be at least through my second cup of coffee before being able to be semi awake.

"Hey Ginny," I smiled tiredly and sat down on the couch.

"Hello Mione! Sleep well?"

"Actually I did, but it's so bloody early," I groaned.

"You'll get use to waking up early again in no time," Ginny chuckled.

"Sure," I said sarcastically, "By the way, how are you and Harry?"

"Were doing fantastic," She said smiling widely, "You would never imagine what he got me, it wasn't an anniversary or anything, he just came up to my bedroom one morning at the burrow and while I was sleeping, he put this necklace around my neck," She touched the said necklace and I gasped at how beautiful it was. It had a green stone in the middle and little tiny red ones around it hanging from a silver chain.

"Merlin." I whispered "It's beautiful, it must've costed him a fortune Gin!"

"I know, I insisted that he take it back because it looked to fragile for me to wear but he refused, said he wouldn't take it back no matter what I said." she replied.

"That's so sweet of him." I smiled.

Ron and Harry appeared at the bottom of the stairs. "You guys ready to head down to the great hall?" Ron asked.

"Well we've been waiting for you guys for nearly 20 minutes, so yes I'm ready. " I said laughing.

"Oh sorry, I had to make sure I looked beautiful," Ron said sarcastically. I chuckled at his apparent good mood this morning.

Once we got down to the great hall we sat with Neville, Seamus, and a few other Gryffindors. I filled my plate up and listened to the conversation my classmates were having finally taking a sip of that coffee I was longing for.

I caught site of platinum blond hair flash in the peripheral of my vision. He was talking with Zabini and Parkinson. Then suddenly as if he felt eyes on him, he looked up and made eye contact with me. This time I wasn't going to cower in fear, I stood my ground and kept eye contact. He had an emotion in his eyes that looked foreign, it was such a deep emotion that only lasted a few seconds as he masked it with a smirk. I shook my head at him with confusion and looked away. Throwing myself back into the conversation as if nothing had happened.

We all finished breakfast and I had to go to muggle studies with Ginny and Ron. Harry had Ancient Runes with Neville and Seamus. Walking out of the great hall, we parted ways and I had to pull Ginny from Harry since she was latched onto his arm. I just laughed at her with a knowing look. Ron strolled on in front of us so me and Gin could talk.

"So I saw that you were looking at Malfoy earlier," she smirked.

"I was not!" I said looking away quickly so she didn't notice the blush at me being caught.

"Mione, yes you were," she laughed "I mean if I weren't dating Harry and Malfoy wasn't a bloody git, then I would certainly get myself a peice of that." she smirked.

"Ginny!" I nearly screeched, "I don't like Malfoy, he's just the same git he has been for the past 6 years and son of a deatheater."

"Hermione, times have change people certainly have too. For all you know he could be a completely different person. We had to go through the war then a whole summer. He could have changed. " Ginny said. I didnt have time to reply since we walked into class and the new professor for the class had just walked in as we sat down in the second row.

The door had opened again revealing Malfoy, Zabini, and Parkinson.

"Sorry we're late professor," Malfoy drawled.

She just waved them off and started talking.

"Welcome to Muggle Studdies, I am Professor Vicorda and as you can see I am new here. I have changed the curriculum around a little. There is going to be only one project for the whole year, that is only thing you will be graded on, this class isn't like the other classes you are taking. I will be pairing you into partners and you'll be going into an alternate world with all your classmates. Everyone has flaws and considering this and the recent war we've all just endured you must demonstrate that you've found a flaw within yourself and how you've come to fix that as a person in order to pass this class. By that point my jaw could've been all the way to the floor, if it could go that far. What the hell is she talking about, I panicked.

The professor had started to name off the pairings, "Ron Weasley and Pansy Parkinson, Blaise Zabini and Ginny Weasley, Draco Malfoy and Hermione Granger."

"Merlin, this can not be happening" I muttered to myself. Interrupting the reading of pairs, "Please, Professor can you pair me with someone other than Malfoy?"

"I'm afraid not, these pairs are impossible to change." she replied with a look in her eyes I couldn't quiet place.

I groaned and but nevertheless nodded my head in frustration.

I looked over to Malfoy and saw that he was looking at me with that same emotion I saw earlier in the great hall. He hid the emotion as quickly as it came by giving me a glare.

"I'm not  happy to be working with you either Granger." he said across the room, "Trust me."

The irony in that last statement made me snort and Malfoy returned with a sneer.

I turned back around to listen to Professor Victorda. "You will be starting this project tomorrow," she said.

I raised my hand hesitantly, "Professor, what would we do about our other classes while we are in this 'alternate' world?"

"Ah yes, good question Miss, Granger, you will be getting some of the work from your other classes by owl while you are there, but the work load won't be a lot since you have to focus on the project at hand." Professor Victorda said. "With that, you all are dismissed."

I threw all my books into my back and rushed to the door.

"Malfoy!" I practically yelled as I saw he had just walked out the door, he stopped and tensed but turned around slowly.

"What do you want Granger," he growled.

"I intend to pass this class so we are going to have to cooperate with each other whether we like it or not," I said, almost regrettably considering I didn't even want to be talking to the ferret. I stopped for a moment to laugh at the memory.

"Whatever Granger, " he said starting to turn around but as he heard my laugh he stopped and is eyes flashed with some unknown emotion as I started laughing, "What could possibly be the reason you are laughing right now?"

"Ferret." and he gave me a murderous look.

I laughed again and left Malfoy standing there as I started walking to the common room since I only had one class on Mondays.

I had reached the common room and muttered "Chocolate frogs" to the fat lady and walked in my mind reeling with what was going to happen the next few months.

Harry and Neville were playing a game of chess with Gin and Ron spectating as I walked up to them.

"Hey guys, how was your first day of classes?" I asked.

"They were good, even though you weren't there so I couldn't get answers off your papers," Harry said laughing.

"Harry, you were going to have to learn how to do your own work at one point in time," I said exasperatedly.

"Mione, I was kidding," he laughed, "Whats got your knickers in a knot?"

"I have to work with Malfoy for a project in Muggle Studdies," I said, "I have to go to a bloody alternative world with him and everyone in the class to complete the project."

"What?" Harry and Neville said in unison, "Is there anyway you could get out of it?" Harry asked as he looked at Ginny.

"No, there is no bloody way we can get out of it" said Ron, "It's mandatory and I'm partnered with Parkinson!"

"As much as I dont like this project they've assigned to you, you all are smart so just try to finish the project as soon as you can so you can come back," Harry said directed at Gin.

Right when I thought I was finally getting my normal life back from the war being over my life had taken a turn in the wrong direction.

We nodded in agreement, I got up and said goodnight considering I had been here talking to them for a while and I was physically and mentally exhausted from the long day

Once I had gotten up to the dormitories I changed into a cami and some pajama shorts. I climbed into my bed and closed the curtain.

I wonder how tomorrow's gonna be, this is probably the last time for awhile I get to sleep in my own bed, I thought.

Thinking about tomorrow, I had fallen into dreamless sleep.

Chapter 3: Todays The Day
[Printer Friendly Version of This Chapter]

The next morning I woke up and immediately wanted to go back to sleep and hide in my room the entire day.

Today was the day they had to start the Muggle Studies project.

Reluctantly, I got up and went through my morning routine. Finishing up rather quickly I headed down to the Great Hall to meet up with everyone before leaving for Merlin knows how long.

As I walked through the door to see everyone at the Gryffindor table, I realized I was going to miss them terribly. I have been trying not to think about it but it’s inevitable now.

Muttering a hello to everyone, I sat down next to Ginny and Harry. I couldn’t really stomach any food so I settled with a goblet of pumpkin juice as my breakfast.

“Are you guys ready for this journey you’re about to go on?” Neville asked.

“I don’t like this project one bit,” Ginny replied as she interlaced her fingers with Harry’s and looked at him somberly.

“Oh Ginny it'll be okay, it'll go by fast and you’ll be back before you know it!” Harry said encouragingly to which she smiled a little at.

“I'm not ready to leave but I think it will be interesting to find out what we will be facing.” Hermione said as she took a sip of her pumpkin juice. “As long as Malfoy doesn’t act like a git the entire time, we will pass. It is Malfoy we’re talking about though.”

“He'll have hell to pay if he hurts you in any way, Mione.” Harry said roughly.

They all agreed and realized it was time to go to class and said goodbye. Leaving Ginny and Harry to have their own moment I motioned Ron to walk with me.

“How have you been? I haven’t been able to really talk to you just us.” I asked Ron.

“Oh Mione, I've been getting better as every day passes, you know with the whole Fred situation. Its hard but I'm glad to be back in Hogwarts. The distraction always helps and this project surely will help.” Ron laughed.

“That’s great, Ron!” I said with a smile. “It will certainly be an experience.”

Ever since I told Ron how I wasn’t feeling the relationship thing after the war our friendship had gotten much better. We agreed that after all the chaos with the war that it was only adrenaline fueling our feelings and we decided to go back to being friends. Ron handled it admirably.

They had finally reached the classroom and found their seats. I noticed that Malfoy and his crew were already there and seated. He saw us walk in and gave us a sneer and looked away.

Typical Malfoy.

“Alright class, let’s begin! Today’s the day I send you to your alternate worlds! I have gotten Professor Snape to concoct a potion that will take you there. Everyone will be living in a community together and there will be certain challenges that will come up that each pair will have to deal with. You are not allowed to harm your partner or you will fail this class.” Professor Victoria said. “Everyone get into their pairs.”

I looked at Malfoy to see he was apparently not moving so with a huff I reluctantly walked over and sat my bag on his table.

“Your filth should not be on my table, Granger.” Malfoy sneered.

“Shut it, Malfoy. We're leaving in a few minutes. Deal with it.” I said with a scowl.

Professor Victoria had come around and put on each of our tables a different colored potion. Ours was a cloudy blue.

“Whenever you’re ready you can drink it. If anyone has any questions or concerns, you are allowed to owl me. Remember, have fun with this. Make the best of your last year here at Hogwarts.” Professor smiled.

I picked up my portion of the potion and looked over at Malfoy. “Bottoms up, Granger.” He smirked.

Everything had turned black and it felt like being pulled through a tiny hole. It was rather uncomfortable and I was starting to feel nauseous from all the spinning.

When I finally woke, it was to a rather unexpected sight.

Chapter 4: The Letter
[Printer Friendly Version of This Chapter]

This cannot be happening. I’ve gotta be dreaming or having a horrible nightmare. The potion must have been made wrong.

I’ve awoken to a tiny room to what looks like a nursery and a small infant sleeping soundly in a crib on the far wall. She’s got almost platinum blonde curly hair with streaks of brunette in them and freckles all over her cheeks. She couldn’t be more than 6 months to a year.

I hear something behind me that sounds like a grunt and I snap my wand towards the sound. It was just Malfoy.

“MALFOY!” I yelled. To the looks of it, he must still be passed out from the potion and seeing as how yelling didn’t wake him, I go over and poke his broad shoulder.

Hmmm, pretty muscular if you ask me, I thought.

Wait. This is Malfoy, Hermione, don’t be thinking about how muscular he is.

Shrugging these thoughts off it seems like he is finally about to come to and I gotta be prepared for his reaction to all this.

Malfoy stirs and after what seems like forever, he finally opens his eyes. He jumps away like he has no recollection of the past 5 mintues. “Granger, what the hell are you doing? Were you just touching me? Great, now I’ve gotta burn this shirt. It’s a shame since I really liked how it looked on me.” He said narcissistically.

I roll my eyes and brush off his insult since that is the least of our worries right now. I gesture over to the far wall for him to look at just what we’ve gotten ourselves into.

He gets up and walks over only to go rigid as he takes everything in.

“Malfoy?” I asked tensely, “I guess this is our project. To take care of this baby together.”

He looks over to the stand next to the crib and picks a piece of parchment up. He walks near me to we both can read it.

               Hermione Granger + Draco Malfoy,

As you can see, there is a child here to your left. You must take care of this child as if it were your own flesh and blood. You must be curious as to why this child even looks like the both of you. With the Headmaster’s permission, we took DNA samples of each of you and made a potion to create a baby for each pair. At the end of the semester you must present the child and tell us the flaw that you’ve identified and how you’ve come to work to fix it.

               Good luck,

               Professor Victoria

Malfoy snorts, “A baby? This wasn’t even in the project description when the Professor first told us about it. This is absolute insanity. There is no way in hell I’m doing this project and definitely not with you!” He storms to the door and tries the door but to no luck, its locked.

“Listen here Malfoy, I’m only going to say this one time. I will not allow you to let me fail this class because of your stupid morals and stubbornness. Let’s just be adults here and get this project done.” I walk passed him to try the door just as he did and it’s still locked.

I turned away in frustration and sat down. To my astonishment, Malfoy walked around the room curiously and as I watched him, I noticed bags under his eyes, he looked like he hadn’t slept in days. I shrugged it off.

I got up and went over to the baby and noticed she had wakened. “Malfoy,” I said quietly, “Get over here.” As I motioned him over, the baby let out this wail and started crying. I looked at Malfoy utterly helpless at what to do and saw some deep emotion in his eyes but still couldn’t place it.

This seemed to be a reoccurrence with this man and every time it leaves me more and more perplexed. Pushing these thoughts aside, I lean down to pick her up and as I do she looks at me with these big brown eyes and finally stops crying. I’m astonished as I start to rock her back and forth. Malfoy just stares at me with the baby and the next thing he does surprises me.

He reaches out to stroke the baby’s hair with such tenderness that I had to stop myself from letting out a gasp. Not wanting to see the emotion I knew was there in his eyes, I look back down to the bundle in my hands and she looked up at the both of us with such happiness. I was so taken aback at what had just transpired I barely heard the click of the door right after his hand had come in contact with the baby. Looking over, the door we had both tried opening earlier was slowly opening to a corridor.

Considering the baby had stopped crying and seemed to have fallen back to sleep, I set her back down in the crib.

“Well,” I say as I clear my throat, “I guess we should go see what else this crazy professor has planned for us.”

All he does is gesture for me to go through the door first, all intense emotion completely gone from his eyes and the disgust was back. It was like the passed few minutes never happened. I grunt and go reluctantly.

As we move down the corridor, I notice it feels warm and I get a sense of comfort which is weird because any scenario with Malfoy behind me and comfort doesn’t make sense. I notice, as we get to a staircase, there are a bunch of pictures and to my shock they’re of Malfoy and I. I briefly touch one of the pictures of the two of them walking down a trail and there are leaves falling all around them, they’re holding hands, and it looks like I’m in mid-sentence and Malfoy seems to be laughing hysterically at what I’m saying. The weird part about this picture is that it looks genuine. I look happy and Malfoy doesn’t even look like himself. Dare I say, he looks handsome while he’s laughing the way he is.

I glance at Malfoy who seems to be focused hard on another picture. It was the two of them. He’s standing in what looks to be his best gowns and he’s looking over at me with an odd expression on his face but he has the biggest smile on his face so I doubt his thoughts could be bad natured. I’m in the most beautiful wedding gown I’ve ever laid my eyes on and my hair is all pinned up. I look over at Malfoy again to see he’s moved on and gone down stairs. I shrug and follow as I investigate the rest of the house. There doesn’t seem to be anything weird with the rest of the house, so they move on to outside and notice they were the only house in what seemed to be miles.

“Well, we’re so failing this project.” I sigh.
