Chapter 1: Going home

There is a teenage boy sitting on his bed using his wand to barricade everyone out of his small, lonely room at number four Privet drive. Harry Potter hasn’t been himself lately and even his aunt and uncle are starting to get worried. Hedwig is gone with a thank- you card to his best friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, he had gotten a bag of every flavor beans and a book for his birthday. Harry isn’t even looking forward to a reply. It was just something to do to waste the long, hard summer month of August until the trip back to Hogwarts on September first. He didn’t even care that he was sixteen. Only one thing was on his mind, Sirius.
Harry can’t bear the thought that his beloved godfather, the man who treated Harry like a son, was dead.
Nothing could take Sirius out of his mind. Not even the Chudley Cannons book Ron had given Harry in second year. He felt as if he were alone without a friend in the world. All of the sudden Hedwig came in the room carrying a parcel. It was his Hogwarts things. Ron and Hermione got them for Harry because the whole month of persuading him come to the burrow didn’t work. They didn’t know what was on his mind. One more thing worse than having Sirius gone- if that was possible- Voldemort.
Ever since that uneventful talk he had with Professor Dumbledore he had been not just distraught- though that is what everyone else thought- but scared. He narrowly escaped Lord Voldemort last year and he just wasn’t feeling so lucky anymore. He would have told Ron and Hermione but the thought of the look of fear on their faces was enough to sustain him-for now. Harry knew he would have to tell them eventually but just not today. Interrupting him from his train of thought Harry heard a knock on the door, it was Dudley.
“ Come on Potter, mum told me to get you for dinner, though I really don’t know why she would even want you to come.”
“ Leave me alone Dudley. Maybe I’m not hungry.”
“ Well it doesn’t matter. Mum said come!”
Harry unlocked his door and went down to dinner. He didn’t know why, being down there wasn’t much better than being in his room. After dinner Harry took a bath and then went to bed. Tomorrow would be his first day at Hogwarts and his uncle was to take him to the King’s Cross station.

Harry woke up to the rattle of a cage being made by Hedwig. He got up to feed her, got dressed, and was about to go down to breakfast when he heard his uncle calling him from downstairs.
“ If you want to make it to that bloody school of yours on time then you had better hurry up.”
“ Coming uncle Vernon,” said Harry with a very dismal tone in his voice, and to himself said, “ I’ll just have to buy some food on the train.”
Harry went to get his trunk and his beautiful snowy owl then after taking them outside uncle Vernon shoved the both hastily into the back seat.
“ Finally I won’t have to listen to that damn bird anymore.”
They finally got to the train and after the very short bidding of good-byes Harry walked through the magical platform of nine and three- quarters and just in a second entered the magical world. There-with steam billowing out of it’s chute-awaited the Hogwarts Express. Though the beautiful scarlet steam engine has lost its appeal for Harry, who now at least could look forward to the great feast that was awaiting him and all the other Hogwarts students, he just couldn’t help feeling somewhat happy to be going back to Hogwarts.
Harry dragged his trunk into the last compartment of the train and while he was putting it up in the luggage rack he saw Ron and Hermione. Right, there he realized how much he had missed them and was extremely grateful to see them.
“ Harry, oh we have missed you so much over the summer,” said Hermione apparently excited at seeing one of her best friends for the first time in two months.
“ Yeah Harry, it was a shame you couldn’t come to the burrow. We all missed you, especially mum. She knew you must feel horrible and all because Sirius…”
“ Ron!” said Hermione warningly. “Well any ways Harry we are glad to have you back.”
“ Yeah,” said Harry. “I’m glad to be back and don’t worry Ron. Talking about Sirius doesn’t bother me anymore,” lied Harry, trying to make his best friend feel better. Not wanting to talk about Sirius, Harry hastily changed the subject. “Oh, by the ways, how did you do on your O.W.L.s ? I got pretty good grades. I am pretty happy. Five Outstandings, Two Exceeds Expectations, and one Acceptable.”
“ Well,” said Ron. “ I got the same except I got four Outstandings and two Acceptables.”
“ I got all Outstandings!” said Hermione positively glowing with delight.
“ Well we all knew you would,” chorused Ron and Harry.
“ Oh Harry, we are so very glad to see you, but Ron and I have to go to the prefect’s carriage to get the passwords and information for this year. Sorry.”
“ That’s okay Hermione. I’ll just wait here and read today’s Daily Prophet.”
“ Good. We’ll, see you later.”
“ Yeah Harry, save us a seat in the Great Hall.”
With that Ron and Hermione left the compartment and just as Harry was starting to get depressed about being alone in came Neville, Seamus, and Dean.
“ Hi, Harry! How was your summer?” asked Neville.
“ Okay,” lied Harry. “And yours?”
“ Mine was okay, I only lost Trevor once!”
“ And I stayed with Seamus over the summer,” said Dean.
“ Aren’t you glad to be back at Hogwarts?” asked Neville.
“ Yeah, it’s great to be back. It feels like home,” said Harry.
After everyone finished talking about their summers they all got some food off the trolley and by the time they had finished and put on their robes they had arrived at Hogwarts. Harry along with his friends took their trunks and animals and dragged them outside the train so they could be magically brought in. Harry was just about to go into the Great Hall to get seats when Ron and Hermione came in.
“ We finished early so we thought we would meet you in the Entrance Hall. We don’t have to deal with the first years this year. Thank God,” said Ron. “ I hate dealing with those cheeky little snot rags! They are so obnoxious.”
“ Now Ron that is not fair. They are not that bad,” spoke Hermione fairly.
“ Look you two, the school year has just started so stop bickering and let’s go get some food. I’m starving.”
“Okay Harry. We’re coming.”
Ron, Harry, and Hermione went into the Great Hall when they saw Professor McGonagall come striding toward them.
“ Potter. A word please before the ceremony starts.”
“ Okay,” he said following her into a slightly more private area. “ Ron, why don’t you and Hermione get seats I’ll be there in a minute.”
“ Sure Harry, see you.” Said Ron and he and Hermione entered the Great Hall.
“ Okay Potter,” said Professor McGonagall. “I just wanted to let you know that you are the new Quidditch team captain. Now there will be a team announcement tonight in the common room so the rest of your teammates know. We really have to keep up the winning streak, don’t we?”
Harry, in sort of trance went into the Hall. He had forgotten that Angelina left the team.
“ Hey Harry. What did McGonagall want with you?” asked Ron.
“ She made me Quidditch captain. I’m just really surprised.”
“ Well,” interrupted Hermione. “ You are the best seeker Hogwarts has seen in a really long time.”
They had found their seats and were about to finish their conversation when all the talking ceased. Harry looked up and saw the familiar three- legged stool being brought in the Great Hall. Professor McGonagall set the stool down and placed upon it a wide brimmed hat. Harry recognized the uneasy look on the first-years’ faces as the brim of the hat ripped wide open and began a song.
About a thousand years ago when Hogwarts barely started,
I sat upon this lonely stool and looked at those downhearted.
They wondered where they would end up and which house they would be,
And then their eyes strayed to the stool and all gazed at me.
I opened my mouth to sing a song and they were all surprised,
When I spoke of the founders four and which students they prized.
I spoke of valiant Gryffindor where dwell the brave at heart,
I spoke of clever Ravenclaw where cleverest would be brought.
I spoke of dear, sweet Hufflepuff where the most fair and just would come,
And of cunning Slytherin which was made of the most ambitious ones.
I was placed upon their heads and there the choices I made,
For I knew I was always right and to the houses the students strayed.
The song ended and the hat was quiet while the house burst out into applause, which was quickly quieted with a stern glance from Professor McGonagall.
“ Atwood, John” after the boy made his way to the stool, the brim opened and said. “GRYFFINDOR!” This long and dreary process went continually for twenty minutes until “Wilton, Lillian” became a “ HUFFLEPUFF!”
After all the noise ceased Professor Dumbledore got up to announce the beginning of the feast and new staff appointments. Everyone knew that there had to be a new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher and everyone was anticipating the moment that they would find out who it would be. None of the other teachers had lasted more than a year. People were starting to feel the job was jinxed and people were wondering whether this person would be up to this job.
“ Welcome everyone to a new year at Hogwarts. Before we begin this lovely feast let me announce the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, Professor Delving.” spoke Dumbledore. There was scattered applause through out the hall at this announcement. Harry looked at the professor. He had a fair toned complexion, with dark blonde hair and dark brown eyes. His robes were of a dark violet and he wore a very happy expression, like one would wear if they were coming back to a familiar and loved place. Currently he was engaged in a conversation with Professor Flitwick and seemed so merry with his surroundings that he didn’t realize that Dumbledore had announced the feast or when the tables became laden with magnificent food.
Harry then turned his gaze to Professor Snape. There he sat staring around the room. Clearly he was upset in not getting the Defense Against the Dark Arts job again.
Snape’s gaze turned on to Harry and he did something he had never done before to Harry, he smiled. Harry taken aback by this sudden show of kindness turned away thinking that maybe Snape was smiling to someone else but a voice in his head said, Snape wasn’t looking at someone else, he was looking at you. Harry turned the thought out of his head and turned to Ron and Hermione to join in on the magnificent feast.

Later that evening when Harry, Ron and Hermione were alone in the Common Room Harry told them about what Snape did and to his surprise Hermione acted like this was a natural thing.
“ Well he is bound to be nice to you. He probably feels bad for you because of Sirius and all.”

Chapter 2: Lessons

Harry woke up the next morning, got into his robes, and went down to breakfast with Ron. When they got into the Great Hall they found Hermione already there examining their new schedules. Ron and Harry picked up theirs and looked them over.
“ Today we start all of our N.E.W.T. classes, what fun. Today we have Transfiguration inn the morning and Charms in the afternoon. Tomorrow we only have Potions – God that will be rough. Wednesday Herbology and Care of Magical Creatures and Thursday we have Defense Against the Dark Arts and Fridays off. Not a bad schedule, what about you Hermione?” asked Ron.
“ Well of course I have all the same except Arithmancy after Potions, Ancient Runes on Thursday afternoon and History of Magic and Astronomy Friday!” Hermione answered excitedly.
“ God Hermione, don’t you want a break?” asked Harry.
“ Of course not. You two hurry up breakfast. Transfiguration is starting in fifteen minutes,” replied Hermione.

Harry and Ron ate a speedy breakfast and five minutes later found themselves waiting in line outside of Transfiguration along with all the other students from the four houses who decided to take this course. About a minute later Professor McGonagall was opening the door to let them in.

“ Welcome everyone to N.E.W.T. Transfiguration class for sixth years. As in my usual class I will expect nothing but the best behavior or you can see yourselves out right now. Because that is settled let us do a quick review from last year. Will everyone take a look at the front please?” and with that she took Ron’s copy of Advanced Transfiguration
and turned it into a small, white mouse, changed it back into the book and gave it back to Ron. “ Okay everyone, let’s see what you can do.”
A few selected people like Hermione had no trouble doing this “ simple task” so she said but it took mostly everyone ‘til the end of class to succeed. The bell rang and off they went to their common rooms to lunch. After a nice lunch of Yorkshire pudding Harry, Ron, and Hermione went to their common rooms to get their things for Charms. They arrived in the crowded classroom just in time to find the last three seats together. Obviously this was all of the sixth years’ favorite class- it was also the easiest class.
“Hello everyone and welcome back to Charms I hope you will enjoy this class and I hope it will help prepare you for life out side of Hogwarts,” greeted Professor Flitwick. “ Today let us start by reviewing some of the charms we learned in prior years.”
The class went over silencing charms, levitation charms, and more alike. The far easiest one for Harry was the summoning charm, in his forth year he practiced it so hard he felt he was bound to remember it forever. The bell rang an hour and a half later. The classes filed out to go to their common rooms and get washed for dinner. Harry had talked to the team earlier and they had decided on having a meeting in the Common Room later that evening to discuss practice times and for the former team members to meet this years new ones.

“ Well everyone, “ Harry started. “ It’s great to be back at Hogwarts and let us start off the year by us all introducing ourselves to the newer players. As you all know I am Harry, the team’s Seeker, and the captain.”
“ I’m Ginny Weasley. Last year I was Seeker when Harry got kicked off the team but this year I’m a Chaser.”
“ I’m Katie Bell, as most of you know I’m a Chaser and this is my final year at Hogwarts.”
“ Hi, I’m Jack Sloper, a beater, just became one the middle of last year so I’m kind of new to Quidditch.”
“ Andrew Kirke I am, I also am a beater. I came to the team the same time as Jack.”
“ I’m Ronald Weasley,” Ron became a lot happier with Quidditch after he helped win the cup last year. “ I’m Keeper, was one since the beginning of last year.”
“ And I am Natalie McDonald. This is my third year at Hogwarts, my first year on the team, I was a reserve Chaser last year, and I’m now a full time Chaser.”
“ Well,” said Harry. “ Now that everyone is introduced I would like to schedule some practices. As you all know the first game we have will be sometime in November and it will be played against Slytherin. McGonagall has booked us the Quidditch pitch for team practices every Wednesday from six o’ clock till eight o’ clock, the same time for Friday, and on Saturday twelve until three. Additional practices will be scheduled as needed. I think we should practice hard and as long as we keep up with our training there will be no trouble for us winning the cup for the fourth year in a row. Any problems?” Harry looked around and since no one had any questions he continued. “ Now as that’s settled we will start the training this Saturday. Well that’s it so Good night everyone.”
And with this he and the rest of the team departed and went to bed.

The next day Harry woke up relaxed and refreshed but was soon disappointed when he remembered he had Potions this morning. He went down to breakfast with Ron and they discussed the likelihood’s of Snape liking them better now that they were in N.E.W.T. Potions

“ I say if anything Snape will be more sour because we actually managed to get into his Potions class, “ said Ron. “ I bet you anything he was counting the days until he could get rid of us. Oh well. Harry could you pass me some toast?”

Ron could not have been more wrong. When he, Harry, and Hermione had reached the dungeon late Professor Snape merely wished them a good morning and told them to take a seat. He also gave Harry another one of his rare smiles. They also saw in this class, who did not look so happy, Draco Malfoy surrounded by his best friends and bodyguards Vincent Crabbe and Gregory Goyle. What they were so upset about nearly everyone knew by now. Just three months ago the world was alerted of the return of Lord Voldemort- something that the Ministry of Magic had been denying for a year- and Draco’s, along with his cronies’, parents had been accused of being Death Eaters and were thrown in Azkaban. Malfoy was no longer strutting around the school like he owned the place and Crabbe and Goyle seemed a lot less threatening.

“ Ha, look at Malfoy, what a prat. I’m surprised they didn’t take away his Prefect’s badge after what his family did. I think the whole lot of Slytherin should be tossed out. Wouldn’t that be nice?” Ron said enthusiastically.
“ Yeah, but you know Dumbledore. He’ll let anyone in no matter what their family background is. And really Malfoy being chucked out wouldn’t really affect us anymore. He’s harmless,” spoke Harry. Their conversation was cut short because Professor Snape just told the class to research a potion for class next week, a complex transfiguration potion, the Polyjuice Potion.

“ Well at least we don’t have to worry about that assignment as we did it in second year,” whispered Hermione.

Chapter 3: Hagrid
[Printer Friendly Version of This Chapter]

Chapter 3: Hagrid

The bell rang so everyone went to the common rooms to drop off their bags. Harry and Ron walked Hermione to her Arithmancy class and then they went outside to go say hello to Hagrid. They walked out onto the grounds and took in the beautiful scenery that was Hogwarts. Hagrid’s little hut sitting on top of a little hill under the shadow of the forest and over looking the lake. They reached his front door, knocked, and heard Fang barking happily. They have known Hagrid long enough to know that Fang was harmless, just like Hagrid.

“Shut up you dozy dog, I need to get the door.” Harry heard Hagrid say. “ comin’, I’m comin’ be there in a minute!” Hagrid opened the door and Fang leapt on top of Ron and started to cover him in slobber. “ Off Fang, settle down. Crazy dog!”
“So Hagrid. How was your vacation? Did you do anything for the Order?” asked Ron excitedly.”
“Ron you know I can’ tell you that. Stop trying to nose into everythin’ it’s not good for you.”
“Ron knows this Hagrid but tell us, what did you do?”
“Well, I did do some stuff for the Order but I can’ tell you. Oh I did see Madame Maxime. Ah…..”

After letting Hagrid think about her for about five minutes Harry decided to interrupt. “So Hagrid…do have a good time?”
“Oh yes. Oh, look at the time. Dinner should be starting anytime. Let’s go to the castle. I’ll walk with you.”
“Okay Hagrid,” with that they walked to the castle. Hagrid in the lead taking his gigantic steps. They reached the castle ten minutes later and entered the entrance hall to find Hermione. After Hagrid walked up to the teacher’s table Harry, Ron and Hermione went to go find their seats. The afternoon tea was quite nice today. Harry enjoyed a helping of his favorite steak and kidney pie followed by a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
He went to the common room after supper to work on the essay for Potions. Harry and Ron got it done in twenty minutes but Hermione wouldn’t let them go to bed without checking it over to see if they got everything right. When she was finally done the pair went to bed and slept peacefully.

When Harry woke up it was Wednesday morning. Time for Herbology followed by a quick lunch, clean off, and Care of Magical Creatures. Harry woke up Ron, Dean, and Seamus. They all got showered and dressed to go downstairs to find Hermione and Neville waiting for them. Lavender and Parvati were in a corner giggling as usual. They went down to take there seats at breakfast when Snape came over to talk to Harry.

“Harry, I wanted to ask if you are having any problems with your essay?”
“No professor, I finished it last night. But thank you.”
“Of course Harry. I was wondering if you would like to meet me in my office after supper tonight?” seeing the look of terror an Harry’s face he added, “There is nothing to worry about Harry, you aren’t in any trouble I just wanted to talk to you.”
“Yes of course sir.”
“Thank you,” and with that he walked away. Ron turned to Harry and asked, “Boy I wonder what that was all about?”
“I have no idea.” After Harry and his friends finished eating they went off to Herbology with Harry still wondering what could cause Professor Snape’s abrupt change in attitude.

Harry just finished eating his dinner and was going to go drop off his belongings in the common room. He bid Ron and Hermione a good bye and exited the Great Hall. Just as he was going to make his way up the marble staircase he heard… “Ah Harry,” spoke Professor Dumbledore. “Glad to see you are ready to meet Professor Snape. We can go see him together, come now.”
Harry having no other choice, let himself be steered by Professor Dumbledore, to Professor Snape’s office.
Harry had been into Professor Snape’s office many times before and he still hated the sight of it with its many creatures floating in unknown substances, sitting on his shelves in jars. All Harry had experienced in that office were things that are stored in Harry’s brain under the ‘most horrible experiences ever’ file. The first time Harry ever entered that office was in second year after he and Ron flew a car into the Whomping Willow. The last time Harry was in that office was when he was trapped in Snape’s pensieve. That was the moment Harry started feeling an emotion other than hate towards Professor Snape. Before Harry even knew it, they were standing in front of the office door. “Severus,” said Professor Dumbledore. “We are here.” They waited for a few moments then the door opened. Professor Snape, much to Harry’s displeasure, stopped the acts of kindness toward Harry. “I see you are here Potter, and you are late. Ah, nice to see you Headmaster,” said Professor Snape. “Please come in and sit down sir.” Harry followed Professor Dumbledore into the room rather reluctantly. After Albus had taken his seat Professor Snape was staring at Harry and then, all of the sudden said, rather vociferously,

“Sit down, Potter!” Harry quickly took a seat rather frightened at Professor Snape’s quick change of attitude.

“Now, now Severus. No need to be so harsh. Harry wasn’t doing anything wrong.”

“I never said he was. It is just, this meeting is extremely important and the faster it is over, the better.”

“What is this all about?” Harry asked.

“Harry…” Professor Dumbledore started. “I am afraid that Voldemort has a new plan to try and capture you from Hogwarts. One that involves Professor Snape. As you know, he is spy for the Order and Voldemort wants him to become a…friend, to you. His plan is that once Severus be friends you, he can take you with him to Voldemort.”

“Voldemort doesn’t really know that much then. Like Professor Snape would be friend me? Ha, that’s funny. He hates me.”

“I do not hate you Potter. But that is besides the point. What the point is, the Dark Lord wants us to act like we are…family…like you and Black were.” At these words tears started to form in Harry’s eyes. It was one thing hearing about Sirius from a friend, nut from someone he detested was rather hard. Professor Dumbledore seeing this quickly cut-in before Harry had a chance to respond.

“Any ways Harry, For the ‘plan’s’ sake, I want Professor Snape to make it appear as if he is trying to be friendly with you and the longer you keep up a front of anger, the better,” Harry was thinking to himself… ‘like my anger will be a ‘front’…. “It is beat to delay the plan until you are ready to fight Voldemort. As soon as you are ready we will start our plan.”

“What’s our plan?” Harry asked.

“You will find out when you are ready,” said a disgruntled Professor Snape.

“Well,” spoke Albus. “I think that concludes the meeting. Maybe you should be getting to bed now. Good night.”

“Good night Professor Dumbledore…Snape.” With that a relieved Harry exited the office and, as quick as he could, ran to the common room. When he had said the password he caught up with Ron and Hermione, and told them all that had happened during the meeting.

“You mean to tell me you have to be friendly with Snape? Ha!” said Ron, apparently ammused.

“Ron, that is not funny. This is a lot for Harry to deal with,” said Hermione.

“I know it is Hermione. I just thought it was funny…” Hermione and Rona then started bickering with each other so Harry said ‘Good night’ and let them continue with their argument.

‘Well,’ Harry thought to himself. ‘As long as I don’t have to be Snape’s best friend I’ll be okay. God, Voldemort, come up with something better…’

A/N: I really hope that chapter wasn’t too short. I’m busy with my other fics and a really important competition at school. I’d, again, like to give a special thanks to all of my reviewers. Harry was walking back to the common room, and he realized he would never feel the same way about his Potions Master ever again. He didn’t know how to take in the information Professor Snape gave him, all Harry knew was that he was feeling a great deal of sympathy towards the man.
Harry walked through the deserted dungeons and into the Entrance Hall to see that some sort of commotion was taking place. There were trunks strewn on the floors with a mixture of clothing and robes thrown everywhere. A cat was running around chasing after something Harry couldn’t see, and there was a girl Harry never saw, trying to pick up the assortment of belongings, swearing in between sobs. “That damn son of a bitch poltergeist. I wish he was alive so I could kill him!” When Harry heard this it was obvious she came from a foreign country because she lacked the proper British or Irish accent everyone else had. This girl had apparently come from America. Harry didn’t know what him but he started bursting out laughing at the scene. From an outsider’s point of view it did look quite hilarious. He then went over to the girl and offered his help trying to calm down his laughter.

“Hi, sorry about laughing…it’s just funny. Do you need help? My name is Harry, by the way…Harry Potter,” he walked over and started picking up assorted spell books and handing them to her.

“Oh thank you…sorry about that little scene you had to witness. It was just, some stupid poltergeist. When I entered he grabbed my stuff and threw it everywhere…It’s nice to meet you Harry, my name is Ariel Port,” and she held out her hand to shake, while they were shaking hands she added, curiously. “You look familiar…now I know!” she said while using her hand to lightly smack herself in the forehead. “You’re that Harry Potter kid my History of Magic teacher was talking about, she said you defeated some wizard or something…Voldemort right? Anyway, I know she’s wrong. He’ll never be gone ” she said calmly. Harry mistaking the informality in her voice for nervousness said, “You don’t have to worry about him…Hogwarts is very safe. I suppose you transferred here?” he asked.

“Yeah, I did…I just found out I have an uncle who lives in England. I’m from the States, you know, and I never would have known he was my uncle unless he contacted me. He said he wanted me to go to Hogwarts…though I was hoping it would be Durmstrang…I read they put a lot of emphasis on Transfiguration…that’s my favorite subject,” she responded.

“Durmstrang is better known here for their emphasis on the dark arts,” Harry said knowingly.

“Oh, really…imagine that,” she said informally, like the subject didn’t really matter to her. “But it doesn’t matter any ways cause I’m at Hogwarts,” she said and when Harry was going to respond, Professor Dumbledore walked into the Entrance Hall.

“Ah, I’m glad you arrived Miss. Port,” and with a wave of his wand all of her stuff was gone, probably in the room she was going to be staying in. “I sent your stuff to the room. Tell me…how is your uncle?”

“Hello Professor Dumbledore. My uncle is…well…there’s something I really don’t understand about him. I’ve tried to explain that he shouldn’t be doing what he’s doing ‘cause it’ll catch up to him, but he just says I’m being foolish…”she replied apprehensively.

“Yes, well when I taught him here at Hogwarts he could be a bit stubborn…brilliant, but stubborn. It must be hard for you finding out he’s your uncle…” Professor Dumbledore said.

“It is, but it is better than having no family at all. I wish he would just go to the Ministry and let them deal with…” remembering Harry was in the room she stopped talking, except to add. “I’m quite tired Professor. Maybe we could finish this conversation tomorrow…and go over the…well, never mind.” she said all very quickly.

“Yes Miss. Port, I understand. Maybe Harry should take you to your room, seeing as how you are staying in the Gryffindor tower with the fellow sixth year girls,” he said nodding at Harry.

“I thought I was going to be placed in…” she started but Professor Dumbledore cut her off. “There was no room and it might be better…” he said significantly looking at Harry, who was oblivious to the whole topic. “…if you were there. I sense bravery in you Ariel.”

“Okay sir…Good night then,” said Ariel.

“Good night Miss. Port…Mr. Potter,” he responded then added. “Don’t forget to meet me in the morning before classes. You will, of course, be participating in classes with Gryffindor,” and with a twinkle in his eye, and a swirl of his robes, Professor Dumbledore was gone.

Harry and Ariel had just bid Professor Dumbledore good night so Harry went to show Ariel the way to the tower.

“The tower is on the seventh floor so it is a long walk,” Harry started to explain.

“Then why don’t we just shimmer there?” she asked.

“What’s ‘shimmering’?” Harry replied curiously.

“Shimmering is like apparition except it is done with in the same building you are in. All wizards can do it and you don’t need a license. I’ve always been able to do it – at least,” she explained.

“I don’t think you can here. It has charms all over the place,” harry reasoned.

“Well let me see,” Ariel said and then disappeared only to reappear a second later. “I guess it can be done. But I think I may have gone to the boy’s dormitory. Oh well,” she said and then shrugged her shoulders.

“I don’t think I can do it…” Harry started.

“Of course you can. Just think really hard of the place you want to be.” Harry closed his eyes and he was gone and when he opened them he was in the Gryffindor common room. He turned around to see Ariel beaming at him.

“See, I knew you could do it,” she said proudly. “My uncle was wrong after all.”

“What?” Harry asked, confused.

“Oh nothing, I better be going to sleep now. I’ll see you in the morning.”

“Good night,” said Harry and he shimmered to the sixth year boy’s dormitory.

Harry woke up the next morning and went downstairs into the Entrance Hall to see Hermione, Lavender, Parvati, and Ariel all giggling about something. Harry looked for Ron and the other boys and found the source of their amusement. Sitting on the ground next to Millicent Bullstrode was the ugliest dog Harry had ever seen. It had a pug-like face and was looking very scared. He saw Crabbe reach down to pick up the dog when he heard Ariel say, “I wouldn’t do that unless you want to end up the same.” Just then Draco Malfoy walked into the hall.

“Well, well what do we have here?” he said looking at Ariel with interest.

“A certain pug-faced Pansy Parkinson, Draco,” she responded calmly. Draco looked taken aback about how she knew his name but shrugged it off.

“That’s Pansy? Who did this?” he asked amused.

“I did,” replied Ariel. “She was insulting Hermione.”

“Oh…so you’re a new Gryffindor? How lovely,” Draco said.

“Actually, I belong to all of the houses. I am just rooming with the Gryffindors. And I can participate in all house activities. I saw Professor Dumbledore this morning,” she replied back cooly.

“Oh…well it’s too bad that you did this. But it is quite funny. Perhaps you should change her back now…” Draco said with a superior tone to his voice.

“My family doesn’t listen to Malfoy’s!” she spat out, saying the word “Malfoy” with disgust.

“And who’s your family…?” he said, equally angry.

“Ask your father. Tell him my name’s Port…Ariel Port,” she said. Ariel waved her hand over Pansy and she turned back into herself. Hermione, Parvati, and Lavender were still silently laughing. Mostly at the look on Draco’s face. By then the whole of Gryffindor and Slytherin were out there watching the display. The most interesting thing was that most of the seventh year Slytherins, along with all of the Gryffindors, were prepared to defend Ariel if needed. Then the captain if the Slytherin Quiddicth team, Adrian Pucey, walked over to Ariel.

“Hello Ariel, if I’m correct?” she nodded her head and he continued. “That was a very interesting performance you had there…would you like to join me for breakfast?”

“Actually I am going to sit with the Gryffindor girls today. But I’d be glad to sit with you for lunch, Adrian,” she responded. And after he bid her a ‘good-bye’ a strange thing happened. It appeared as if he bent his head down ever so slightly. But no one paid attention. They were too into remembering how Ariel was able to transfigure Pansy…with out a wand.

A/N: How was the chapter? I know it was short but I thought it had some really important clues in it *wink, wink* . I hope you liked it and I’ll up-date soon, I promise. Love always, Rose Eva.

Chapter 8: Mysterious conversations.

Disclaimer: I do not own harry Potter or any thing related otherwise. I do, however, own this plot and if you want to use it please ask.

Summary: Draco finds something out about Ariel but what is it…?

A/N: Sorry if this took to long. I went on a trip so it took a little while.

~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~

Ariel walked with Hermione, Parvati, and lavender into the Great Hall and sat down at the breakfast table.

“I can not believe that you did that. You are going to be in trouble,” Hermione said, her voice mingled with fear and laughter.

“No I won’t. That is as long as no one tells,” Ariel replied calmly.

“Malfoy will tell, I’m sure. He’s probably angry that you insulted his family,” Parvati interjected.

“Oh well. I’m not going to worry about it now,” she responded and the girls ate their breakfast just chatting about miscellaneous subjects. They finished breakfast and then Harry and Ron met up with Hermione and Ariel and they walked together to their first class of the morning, Potions, which happened to be with the Slytherins.

“Yay, another chance to see Malfoy,” said Ariel sarcastically. Everyone laughed and then walked into the classroom.

“Hello Miss. Port. Please sit down and try to keep quiet,” said professor Snape, less vicious than usual.

“Yes sir,” she said, and then took a seat at the front of the class.

“Would you please try not turn anymore of the students in my house into animals please? I do not want to give you a detention,” he said calmly, not at all upset that one of his students managed to get herself turned into a canine earlier in the morning.

“I’ll try sir. But to be fair she was asking for it. Pansy needs to be nicer towards the people in other houses,”

“Hey,” Pansy interjected. “I hardly did anything!”

“You called her a ‘Ugly bushy-haired freak’. Which she is not by the way,” she said giving a small wink to the Gryffindors.

“Silence! I will not have petty arguments taking place in this class. Miss. Parkinson, did you call Miss. Granger that?” Professor Snape said.

“Yes,” said pansy, looking defiant and surprised at the fact that Professor Snape cared.

“I am sorry, but that deserves a detention after school,”

“Well,” said Draco, who was suprisingly quiet for the past ten minutes. “Isn’t Ariel even going to get in trouble?”

“Shut it Malfoy,” said Harry, Ron, and Hermione together.

“No, Mr. Malfoy, she will not,” said Professor Snape calmly, while glaring at the trio.

“Why is th…?” started Draco, but was shoved by Blaise who quickly said, “Shut up Draco!”

“Why?” Draco responded to Blaise. Seeing the class staring at them he responded, “I’ll tell you later. Just leave her alone.”

“This has gone on long enough! We are now going to resume the class and learn about potions. Now! Can anyone tell me about the Transfiguration potion?” Both Ariel’s and Hermione’s hands shot up in the air at the same time. Hermione, however, after seeing the look on Ariel’s face, put her hand down slowly.

“Yes Miss. Port…?” said Professor Snape. And Ariel went on for fifteen minutes explaining the potion and how it is to be brewed properly. When she fished Professor Snape said, “Very good, Miss. Port.” The class then proceeded to taking notes on the potion while Ariel and Professor Snape talked quietly in the front of the class. When the bell rang Harry went up to see Ariel and he heard a urgent conversation going on between them: “Are you sure? You had better tell the headmaster.” “I have.” “Okay. If you hear anything else tell me. We’ll have to get together with the headmaster and talk to him about…Mr. Potter, can I help you?”

“Sorry professor. I was just waiting for Ariel,” Harry responded quickly.

“Well, you may wait outside of the classroom,” he said.

“Wait Harry!” said Ariel. “We can go now. Bye professor.” And they walked out of the classroom together to meet up with Ron and Hermione, only to run into Draco, who seemed quite nervous.

“Um…Ariel?” Draco started. “I just talked to Blaise and I wanted to say I’m sorry for this morning. Would you mind…er…walking with me now. I understand that you have a free period now?”

“Well, I was going to meet Ron and Hermione, but I suppose so. Yes Draco, I’ll talk to you. Bye Harry. Sorry to leave but I think this will be important,” said Ariel.

“Okay,” Harry said. “I’ll see you tonight at dinner, right?”

“Yes,” and Ariel and Draco walked away, heads together, talking quietly. Harry went to see Ron and Hermione thinking: “I wonder what that was about?”

Chapter 8: Dark Magic

Chapter 9: Dark magic

Disclaimer: I do not own Harry Potter.

Summary: Is Ariel using Dark Magic? And if she is what will happen?

Dedication: To my loyal reviewers…oh wait. I don’t have any. They all disappeared! (Except Anora, I thank you! And my beta, Signeus.)

~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~
Harry entered the common room and there he met Ron and Hermione.

“Hey there mate,” Ron started, but upon seeing the look on Harry’s face added. “What’s wrong?”

“Something strange is going on with Ariel,” Harry replied.

“Is she hurt?” Hermione questioned, looking slightly scared.

“No…it’s just, well, things are strange with her. It’s like she’s well…”

“Mysterious?” Hermione supplied helpfully.

“Yeah, and today. Malfoy came up to us and he was…nice to her. He wasn’t even angry about the insults or anything,” Harry said, very suspiciously. “Something has to be going on.”

“Well,” said Ron. “I think we should ask her about it.”

“But I doubt it’s anything bad. I mean, she can definitely hold her own. Look what she did to Pansy. It’s just…she’s different. Kind of too perfect, if you know what I mean,” said Hermione, contemplating their decision. “We don’t want her to think we don’t trust her.”

“Yeah,” said Harry. “But just ask her if anything is wrong…to be sure.”

“That’s a good idea,” said Ron. “Malfoy can be pretty tricky. Who knows what he’ll try to do?”

“Yeah Ron, but he was civil to her today. Like he was, well, afraid of her or something. Remember how Pucey acted towards her earlier? That was odd,” Harry said.

“Maybe – well, just maybe she’s using er…dark magic?” Ron said, voicing what everyone was thinking.

“Ron!” Harry and Hermione shouted in unison.

“Sorry, it’s just like you said, Hermione. She’s too perfect,” said Ron, trying to justify himself. “I know what you can do, Harry. Talk to Dumbledore. He’ll know what to do.”

“Yeah, maybe I will. I always run into her having these whispered conversations with teachers.”

After they decided that Harry would see Professor Dumbledore, they went to the Great Hall to have some lunch and then went to the library to research dark magic. “Just in case” as Ron put it.

~ * ~

They couldn’t find anything in the library that described a dark spell well enough. Probably so no one would try to teach themselves. And when they actually found a book Madame Pince, the librarian, stood behind them making sure they weren’t “up to something”.

“Nothing,” Ron said while slamming another book shut. “Maybe she is perfect.”

“She can’t be. No one is that good at magic. And she didn’t even get in trouble for such an advanced state of Transfiguration! Something is going on,” Hermione said, getting more and more determined by the second.

“I think I found something…Oh my God, I used Dark Magic?!” Harry said shocked, with a slightly sick feeling in his stomach.

“What?!” Hermione practically yelled. “What is it?”

“Shimmering. It’s a form of apparition that is used by dark wizards to get from one place to another without breaking anti-apparition spells and charms. The first day she was here she showed me how to shimmer. And I did it. I can’t believe I used dark magic!” Harry said, very angrily.

“Maybe she didn’t know?” suggested Ron. “And it’s not like you did anything wrong. It’s her fault.”

“Yeah, but now I’m definitely going to Dumbledore,” Harry said.

A/N: Hope that it wasn’t too short. And what happened to my loyal reviewers? Should I put this on “hiatus”?

Chapter 10

Disclaimer: I do not own Harry Potter…yet. JUST KIDDING! I wish I owned HP but I do not so I just have this and a hundred more little plots to get me through.

Author’s Note: So I guess this is the end of my story. Quite a pity having to end it… I might not depending on reviews *wink*. Thank you to my beta, Signeus!

~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~

Harry decided that he was going to see Professor Dumbledore and tell him. Harry, Ron, and Hermione didn’t want a dark wizard running around the school. He was almost at the office entrance when he ran into Ariel, herself.

“Hello Harry! What are you doing?” she asked cheerfully, almost innocently, but Harry knew better.

“I need to see the Headmaster,” he started but got an idea. “In fact… Why don’t you, er…join me?”

“Er…okay. It sounds really serious. What happened?” she said cautiously.

“Just come with me,” Harry said firmly.

“Lemon drops,” Harry said to the gargoyles flanking the entrance and they moved over to allow him access. They went up the spiral staircase and Harry knocked the Griffin knocker against the door. When he heard the old man say “Ah… come in” Harry allowed Ariel to enter first and then put a locking charm on the door. This caused Ariel to get suspicious and even a little nervous. Something she wasn’t known to do.

“Ah…Harry. And Ariel! What do I owe the pleasure? It must be urgent if there is need for a locking charm.

“Actually sir,” Harry started. “It is quite urgent. There is something I need to ask both you and Ariel.”

“What is it Harry?” Ariel said, her voice nervous.

“Yes, my boy. What seems to be the problem?” Professor Dumbledore mimicked.

“Why are, er…you, Ariel, using Dark Magic?” Harry asked cautiously. The whole scene seemed to freeze over. Professor Dumbledore lost the twinkle in his eyes and Ariel started looking very sick.

“Excuse me?” she said. “What made you get that idea?”

“Er…you know. Shimmering. It’s considered a dark art,” Harry said cautiously.

“Harry,” Dumbledore started. “There is something I need to tell you but you can’t tell anyone. Do you understand?”

“Okay, Ariel is the niece of Lord Voldemort. When her parents died last year, she went to go live with him. That is why she’s at Hogwarts this year. Voldemort wanted her to spy on you.”

“And have you?” Harry asked Ariel.

“No, of course I haven’t!” she said defiantly. “I’ve been helping.”

“That’s why Malfoy’s scared of you, isn’t it? And why you never get in trouble?” Harry asked.

“Harry,” Professor Dumbledore started. “One thing you must know is that Ariel was raised to be a dark wizard and she sometimes can’t control her emotions. You should know what that feels like.”

“Yes, but isn’t this a bit much?” Harry said plainly. “I mean, I’m supposed to be training to defeat Voldemort when his own niece is here at Hogwarts!”

“Yes,” Ariel said. “But what we haven’t told you yet is that I’m going to help you train and defeat Riddle. I can use a spell that he taught me this year. It transfers pain. If we use that, you’ll finally have a chance to beat him. And to save the world from evil.”

“Okay…” Harry said convinced. Not really knowing what he was agreeing to.

~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~

A/N: Yes, I am evil, aren’t I? A cliffhanger. Yep. Now if you want me to finish, I will and then you will find out what Harry really agreed to…please review! (I’ll probably finish the story… eventually)
