Chapter 1: Hogwarts Express, again.
[Printer Friendly Version of This Chapter]

A/N: So I’ve had this story in my mind for a long time and I usually don’t take this long to put anything up but I’ve been a bit busy with my D/G. So the main characters are James, Sirius, Remus, Lily, Emily, and Karma. Em and Karma are made up characters. I promise I wont abandon so read! And review, that makes me really happy.

P.S. I borrowed bits from Order of the Phoenix and Deathly Hallows [memories] so I don’t own that or characters you recognize

P.P.S. there will be bits of Snape.

+Banner shall be up soon, if it isn’t already.

At the end of each chapter, you shall receive a quote and a few lyrics via my ipod+memory

Chapter One: Hogwarts Express, again.

James opened the compartment door to reveal a small, blonde haired, eleven year old staring out the window nervously. Opposite him, sat a red haired girl, she looked like she had been crying. He heard Sirius snort behind him. Who cried while going to Hogwarts, the most amazing place perhaps in the world!

“Can we sit in here?” James asked the boy.

He nodded nervously, “I’m Remus Lupin.” The boy said, introducing himself.

“Cool-” James was cut off by the compartment door opening again.

A small, slightly chubby boy came in, “Everywhere else is full can I join you? By the way I’m Peter.”

Sirius nodded, “My names Sirius Black, and that’s Remus Lupin, and that’s James..?”

“Potter” James supplied.

Severus hurried along the corridor of the Hogwarts Express as it clattered through the countryside. At last he stopped, outside a compartment in which a group of rowdy boys were talking. Hunched in a corner seat beside the window was Lily, her face pressed against the window pane. He sat down across from her.

“I don’t want to talk to you,” she said.

“Why not?” Severus asked.

“Tuney hates me because we saw Dumbledore’s letter.” Lily said, looking like she was going to cry again.

“So what?” Severus said nonchalantly.

“So she’s my sister!”

“But we’re going! We’re off to Hogwarts! You’d better be in Slytherin,” Severus said excitedly.

“Slytherin? Who wants to be in Slytherin? I think I’d leave, wouldn’t you?” James asked turning to face Sirius.

“My whole family has been in Slytherin, but maybe I’ll break the tradition. Where are you heading.” Sirius asked grinning.

James lifted an invisible sword, “Gryffindor, where dwell the brave at heart! Like my dad.”

Severus snorted. James turned to glare at him, “Got a problem with that?”

“No, If you’d rather be brawny than brainy-” Snape sneered.

“Where are you hoping to go seeing as you’re neither?” Sirius interjected, standing alongside James.

Peter sniggered quietly receiving a glare from Snape.

Lily stood up, looking at James and Sirius in dislike. “Come on Severus lets find another compartment!”

“See ya’ later, Snivellus!” James and Sirius cried out in unison.

Lily angrily led the way to another compartment. Two girls were sitting inside. The one with long curly blonde hair was taking notes as she read Hogwarts a History. The other girl, had shoulder length reddish-black hair, and she was playing with a blue tattered baseball cap.

“Can we sit here?” Lily asked timidly.

The black haired girl nodded at them once.

“I have to go speak to Avery. I’ll see you later.” Severus said before quickly escaping the compartment.

Lily had a feeling that he didn’t do so well with girls, though he seemed to get along well with her.

“Hi my names Lily Evans and that was Severus Snape.” Lily said.

“My name’s Karma Bell.”

“Hey my names Emily Emmett Emerson” the blonde haired girl said proudly, “but you can just call me Em.”

“So what are you doing?” Lily asked politely.

“I’m taking notes, I’m actually a muggleborn and I thought I’d get some background reading.” Emily said, smiling shyly.

“Me too. It’s a really informative.” Lily said, smiling. It felt better once she realized she wouldn’t be the only muggleborn.

Karma wrinkled her nose, “I’m not much of a reading type.”

Karma rushed after James.

“We are going to be late and it’s going to be your fault!” Karma yelled at James who was hurrying along beside her.

“We are not going to be late.” James reassured as they crossed the barrier from the muggle world to the wizarding world.

James had waited till the last minute to do his packing and Karma had to wait for him since they were going to the station together.

They could see the Hogwarts Express shining brightly. They walked towards the group of people waiting near the corner.

“Hey, Remus!” Karma said, leaning over to hug him.

“Hey guys!” James said to Remus, Sirius and Peter.

“Have you seen Em or Lily?” Karma asked, rolling her eyes as James perked up to the sound of Lily’s name.

“No sorry.” Remus said.

Karma nodded and dragged her trunk to the train. Stepping inside, she headed all the way to the back and sure enough, Emily was sitting in the last compartment, reading a book.

“I’m just waiting till the day you run out of books to read. It won’t be that far.” Karma joked.

“Ha-ha. Have you seen Lily?” asked Emily, tying her hair back.

“Head girl duty probably. Shouldn’t you be in the prefects’ carriage for the meeting?” Karma asked, as she lifted her trunk to the shelf above the seats.

“Oh yeah! I completely forgot!” Emily said as she quickly put away her book and grabbed her cloak, pinning the Prefects badge on it as she left. “See you in a while.” She called out.

Karma changed into the school uniform and sat down only to be joined by James and Sirius.

“Hey Karamell, mind if we join you?” James asked, using his nickname for her.

Sirius had already started to put up his trunk before Karma even answered.

“Of course” Karma said grumbling, Lily wouldn’t be happy when she came back.

Emily rushed into the Prefects compartment. It wasn’t like her to forget things. Lily had already started giving out duties while the Slytherin Head Boy, Lucius Malfoy, winked at another Slytherin blonde girl.

“Sorry I’m late.” Emily said meekly, as she took her seat next to Thomas Abbott.

“That’ll be fifteen points from Gryffindor.” Lucius said, grinning.

“You can’t take away points; we aren’t even at Hogwarts yet.” Lily reminded him.

Lucius scowled and returned to sneaking glances at Narcissa Black.

“Narcissa, you have patrol duty, Tuesday nights with Lucius. Em, you have Friday nights with Remus, Thomas, you have Monday’s with Tanya.” Lily concluded, reading off a sheet of paper.

Lily sighed as everyone left the compartment. She loved being Head Girl even if it meant having to work with Lucius, but it was still a lot of work since Lucius did absolutely nothing except take away points from Gryffindors, Hufflepuffs, and Ravenclaws.

She quickly walked back to her compartment, only to find, much to her annoyance, James Potter.

“Hey Lily, wanna go out with me?” James asked hopefully.

“No!” Lily said as she sat down next to Karma who gave her an apologetic look.

Lily rolled her eyes. She would just have to figure out a way to stop James from asking her. He’d have to get tired eventually…

Lily glanced around; Emily and Remus were discussing the fastest way to patrol the hallways in hushed tones, James was staring at her. Lily quickly looked away. Sirius was staring out the window, his eyebrows furrowed deep in thought, which was quite unusual.

Lily gazed to her right. Karma had fallen asleep, her head resting on Lily’s shoulders. She covered her face with her hand, peeking through her fingers at James; he was still staring at her. She groaned. This was going to be a long ride.

A/N: Did you guys get that it switches from the past to the present? Or am I giving you lot too little credit? BTW, Karamell is a combo of her name, Karma and Bell. Got it? Anything else you might be confused about? P.S. the pairings aren’t exactly what they seem.

Chapter 2: Gits and Hogsmeade
[Printer Friendly Version of This Chapter]

Chapter Two: Gits, Hogsmeade.

Emily got up and changed into her school uniform. Glancing around the room, she saw Lily’s bed was empty; she had probably went to go get the schedules. Karma was snoring in her bed. She quickly woke Karma up before returning to the bathroom to fix her hair. Back in the dormitory, Karma was slowly getting ready so Emily sat down and continued the book she had been reading on the train. Finally Karma was ready and they went to the Great Hall.

Lily was handing out schedules to the seventh year. They joined the crowd around Lily, waiting to get their schedules.

“Black” Lily called.

Sirius got up and took his schedule to quickly examine.

“Fuck! Defense with Slytherins first period!” Sirius groaned.

“Language!” Lily scolded at him.

“Bell” she called.

Karma came up and took her schedule, groaning as she realized she too had Defense with Slytherins first period.

“Bennett, Cullen, Emerson, Giovanni, Hale, Lupin, Potter” Lily finished.

James came up to take his schedule, “Hey Lily, will you-”

“No” Lily quickly said as she walked over to Emily and Karma. James followed, sitting close by them with Sirius and Remus.

“The schedule sucks!” Karma said, stuffing a piece of toast in her mouth.

Emily shrugged.

“You guys are coming to the quidditch pitch right? I’m trying out!” Karma said excitedly.

“For what?” Emily asked.

“Beater.” Karma said, her eyes sparkling with excitement.

“Isn’t that Black and Cullen’s position?” Emily asked curiously as she cut her food into small equal portions.

“Yeah but when I try, James will have to kick out Black and take me! And then me and Edward can be beaters!” she replied, glancing down the table to where Edward Cullen was sitting.

“Potter is best friends with Black; there is no way that he’ll kick him off the team. And I don’t know if I’m gonna come to see you. Potter will be there, he’s captain right?” Lily asked peeking at him from under her eye lashes.

“You guys are my good luck charms! You have to come! James wouldn’t notice you; he’d be preoccupied with picking his team and everything.” Karma lied.

James would find Lily even if she was a mile away.

“Fine, when is it?” Lily asked dejectedly.

“Right after breakfast.” Emily informed.

“Great, I’m gonna go get my new broom! Father got it for me, it’s a Lightning 650! The best ever! I’ll see you guys on the pitch” Karma said as she ran back to the girls dormitory.

Lily followed Emily to the pitch. James was standing near the edge in front of a giant crowd of Gryffindors. Lily sat down in the stands next to Emily and Remus.

“Hey Emily, Lily.” Remus said smiling at them.

“Hey Remus,” They both greeted him.

After a whole hour, they finally had their Keeper, Zane Bennett, the three Chasers, Jasper Hale, Amanda Gresham, and Charlie Giovanni, and Potter was obviously playing Seeker.

It was time for Beaters.

Lily and Emily crossed their fingers and watched Edward get on his broom. Lily had to admit that Karma had been right; he did look pretty good, his bronze hair glistening and his topaz eyes scanning the crowd.

James watched as one by one the Gryffindors tried. It was very boring. Every one was basically the same, except for the small exception of the fifth year, Amanda Gresham, a new addition to the team. He had promised Sirius that he would save Beaters tryouts for last so Sirius could show off his moves. James snorted at the thought. Sirius, show off his moves. More like being an arrogant prick.

There were only five people trying out, Sirius, Edward, Karma, Angelina, and Mark.

First was Angelina, she was in her second year and didn’t look at all like the type to be a Beater but he let her try anyways. He handed her a bat and watched her fly up. It was a bit wobbly but that could be improved…

“NEXT!” James shouted.

“What!? I didn’t make it?” the girl cried, tears were forming in her eyes.

“Well, you only hit two out of eighteen of the Bludgers.” James pointed out.

The girl went off crying. James rolled his eyes.

Next was Mark, who turned out to be a Ravenclaw. Finally Edward, Karma, and Sirius went.

Karma was really good; James was surprised she hadn’t tried out earlier. Sirius was, as always, a show off and also the best. Edward was also good.

“Karma, Sirius you’re on the team. Sorry Edward.” James said guiltily. He felt slightly bad for picking his best friends.

“No problem.” Edward said.

This made James feel guiltier but he brushed it off as he heard her voice.

“Karma! You were brilliant!” Lily said as she and Emily ran to congratulate Karma.

“Thanks guys, hold on I’ll be right back.” Karma said as she broke free of their group hug.

“Hey Edward,” Karma said.

“Hey, congrats on making the team.” Edward said smiling at her.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to take your position,” Karma replied guiltily.

“It’s okay, I have to study anyways, with the N.E.W.T.S.  and all.” His topaz eyes laughing as if they held a secret.

“By the way, you were really good.” Edward added.

Karma blushed.

“I’m sorry to disappoint you Bell, but Edward isn’t that type.” Black said.

Karma spun around. Black was standing a few feet away, his arms crossed over his chest, smirking at her.

“What do you mean that type?” Karma asked in a dangerous voice.

“Well I think that he’s interested in girls, and your, well…” Sirius said gesturing at her clothes.

She was wearing a purple T-shirt and gray baggy pajama’s. Her eyes widened as she realized what he was saying.

“Your gonna be sorry for this” Karma whispered in a dangerous whisper before storming back to her dormitory.

“Ooh I’m scared.” Sirius said mockingly.

Lily, Karma, and Emily sat outside under the beech tree near the Black Lake. Lily was helping Emily make study schedules for them while Karma sneakily aimed her wand at a second year boy.

“Levicorpus” she whispered, grinning widely.

She bit her lips in an attempt not to laugh as the boy was hoisted into the air by his ankles. The boy looked around confused as the people around him started to laugh.

“Karma!” Lily scolded.

Karma turned around to face Lily, losing concentration and the boy fell down into a crumpled heap evoking more laughter. Lily gave Karma a look.

“Fine, I’ll apologize.” Karma said, rolling her eyes.

She got up and apologized to the boy until he started flirting with her. Karma snorted before walking away.

“By the way, tomorrow’s a Hogsmeade weekend” Lily pointed out as Karma joined them again.

“Why?” Emily asked, looking up from the chart.

“Because we’re going to be having a Yule ball next week. Professor Dumbledore told the Prefects yesterday.” Lily said smiling.

“hmm…” Emily said drifting off in her own thoughts.

“Ew” Karma said snorting, “I’m not going to no ball, but I’ll help you pick out the dress” Karma said as she stood up.

“Where you going?” Emily asked, coming out of her reverie.

“Quidditch practice, I’ll meet you guys at five near the staircase, Bye.” She said as she quickly ran towards the pitch.

“Sorry, I’m late!” Karma shouted as she ran outside behind Lily and Emily.

Lily rolled her eyes, “Anyway, Emily, You were going to say something.”

Emily nodded, “Remus asked me to the ball. But just as friends!” she added quickly before Lily could say anything.

“Oh, lucky. No one’s asked me yet.” Lily said frowning.

“Are you kidding, three people asked you but you said no, what are you waiting for?” Emily asked, pushing the door open to Madam Malkins’.

“I don’t know.” Lily admitted as she sifted through the dresses.

“So did Remus say ‘just as friends’ or is that what you think?” Karma asked.

“Well he didn’t say it but we’re just friends.” Emily said bending down out of view to pick up a dress that had ‘fallen’.

“So what do you think of this?” Lily asked, stepping out of the changing room, showing them a green dress the same color as her eyes.

It was a satin sleeveless full-length dress that clung to her body until the thighs, where it started to loosen. There was a long cut starting a bit above her knees revealing her pale leg.

Emily stared at her awed.

“Ni-ice.” Karma said appreciatively.

“Thanks, I found a dress you might like.” Lily said blushing as she quickly went back into the changing room. A minute later, she came out carrying her own dress and the dress for Emily. It was a pale blue dress that came down to Em’s knees. The top part was covered with a pretty black design.

Karma and Emily nodded appreciatively.

They stopped at the Three Broom Sticks for drinks.

“Hey Rose” they said, greeting the pubs’ owners’ daughter Rosmerta.

“Hey, guys what can I get you?” Rosmerta replied flipping her curly blonde hair behind her, oblivious to the group of guys at a nearby table, trying to get her attention.

“We’ll have butterbeers.” Emily said.

“Us too.” James said, as they slipped into chairs next to them.

“So, Emily, I heard Remus here has asked you to the Yule ball.” Sirius said, winking at Remus.

Emily nodded as she stared at the table.

“Speaking of the ball, I was wondering whether you would like to go with me, Lily.”  James asked.

His eyes were wide, and he was chewing on his lower lip nervously as he stared at Lily.

“Of course, she’d love to go with you.” Karma said, grinning at Lily.

James turned around to stare at Karma. “You’re serious!?”

“No that’s him over there.” Karma said, laughing at her own joke, “but yeah, she’ll go with you.”

“No I wont.” Lily said incredulously, staring at Karma.

“Maybe you guys should go…” Emily said, to the guys.

Peter stared at his drink longingly before following the others out.

Lily turned around to face Karma, “Why’d you say I’d go with him?” she hissed.

“Because you want to.” Karma replied grinning.

“What?” Lily asked, spluttering on her drink.

“It’s true, if you hadn’t wanted to go with James, you would have said yes to Thomas or those two other guys that asked you, but you were waiting for James to ask you.” Emily said.

“That makes no sense.” Lily said, crossing her arms, as she pretended to be mad at Karma.

“You know you want to.” Karma goaded.

“Yeah right! He is so obnoxious and self centered. The way he runs his hand through his hair to make him look like he just got off his broom. And the way he shows off. He is so annoying!” Lily ranted, glaring at Emily and Karma.

“But you like him.” Emily said as she paid for the drinks and followed them outside.

“Yeah right.” Lily snorted, “I’m just not going to show up.”

“Yes you will.”

“No I wont.”

“Will, just imagine you and James holding hands, dancing under the moonlight. And then when it’s over, he’ll lean down and ki-”

“Hey Karma” a soft voice called.

Karma whirled around. “Oh hey Edward”

“We’ll see you later” Emily said, grinning as she walked away with a fuming Lily.

“So, I was wondering whether you’d like to come to the ball with me?” he asked, his pale skin glowing subtly.

“Mhmm, of course.” She replied, a little too eagerly, forgetting the fact that she didn’t have a dress, and that she hated going to balls.

“Though I might be a little late so how about we meet up at 9:30 instead of eight?” Edward asked. Karma nodded and practically ran all the way back to Hogwarts.

Ughh, I don’t like the way Karma is. She is too out of character. Please review and tell me how sucky I was. Anyways:

Chapter 3: Sorry Nights

Chapter Three: Sorry Nights

In the Common Room, James pulled her to the side.
“Hey Karma, can you help me make Lily like me?”
“Oh James, I’d love to, but that would be like convincing her to kiss a warty old frog.” Karma said grinning.
James punched her lightly on the shoulder.
“Of course I’ll help you, I live only to be of service to you, my ever so dashing prince.” Karma said rolling her eyes.

Emily skipped downstairs, not really concentrating on her way, but rather trying to figure out which page the Charms homework was on. In the Common Room, James was listening intently to what Karma was saying which was shocking since Karma couldn’t possibly be teaching him anything educational. Emily shrugged; they were probably up to no good. She continued on to the library, heading towards the secluded area in the back. She pulled out a chair and sat down, pulling parchment and quills from her bag. The essay was supposed to be thirteen inches long, but before she even got two inches done, Sirius appeared by the edge of the table looking very distressed, which was very unusual.

“Hey Emily, can you do me a huge favor?” he asked, pulling out the chair next to her.
“Yeah, sure.” Emily agreed wondering what Sirius could possibly want from her.
“Can you tutor me?” Sirius asked.
“What?” Emily asked, not sure if she heard correctly.
“Yes, I, Sirius Black, am asking you to tutor me.” Sirius said, rolling his eyes exasperatedly. “I’m failing Transfiguration” Sirius said frowning again, and Dumbledore says I won’t be able to be on the Quidditch team.”
“Uh sure, but we cant do it in the library because its practical stuff and I’m pretty sure Madam Pince wouldn’t be too happy if we turned her books into turtles. And we can’t do it right now either because I’m studying.” Emily said, pointing to her books and notes.

Madam Pince peered from around the corner of a bookshelf like a vulture and told them to shush.
Sirius pulled one of her books to look at it; Charms for Dummies by Rudolph Rein.
It looked more like a book for Sirius then for Emily who was definitely not a dummy.
He pulled a scrap of parchment to him and scrawled a note to Emily, pushing it to her.
Emily looked at the note.
Wanna help me do my Charms homework?
Sure, I’ll help you. NO COPYING!
Sirius rolled his eyes and stole some more of her parchment and a quill, looking up at her expectantly for the answers.

Lily took a deep breath as she stared at the green satin dress in her hand. It was gorgeous, but she didn’t feel like wearing it anymore. The Ball was tomorrow and she was insanely mad at Karma but also slightly happy for her. Even though Karma insisted she wasn’t a girly girl, Lily could see that whenever she saw Edward Cullen, she got very excited and hyper.

Though a larger part of her brain was furious at her. Karma knew how much she hated James but she still told James yes. She wasn’t the one who was going to have to listen to him talk about quidditch non-stop, or run his hand through his hair to look like he just got off the broom.
UGHH! He was SOO infuriating!

Emily examined herself in the mirror. The pale blue dress Lily had picked for her was clinging to her body nicely. Lily had even used a spell on her blonde hair making it a platinum blonde, almost white color, which looked great with the black floral design near the top of the dress. Her now platinum blonde hair hung straight past her shoulder unlike Lily’s whose fiery red hair was put up in elaborate curls.

Lily, was currently searching through her trunk. A minute later she stood up, smoothing the emerald green dress and handed Karma the navy dress. Since Karma didn’t own a dress and refused to buy one, Lily decided to lend her one of her own. The navy sleeveless dress stopped short at the thigh. She held out the dress to Karma who backed away, repulsed. Lily rolled her eyes.

“After what your making me do,” Lily said, referring to James, “I have the right to make you look nice.”
Karma sighed and walked over to Lily.
Ten minutes later, the dress was on, her hair straight and shiny, and black eyeliner in place. Even though she looked gorgeous, Lily could do nothing about the frown on Karma’s face.

Emily sighed, pulling Karma by the hand down the stairs. In the Common Room, Remus was waiting for them.
“You all look exquisite.” Remus said, smiling at them.
“Thanks.” The three of them replied in union.
“So where’s James?” Karma asked, glancing at the boys’ dormitory staircase.
Sure enough, James came down the stairs in a silky black button shirt and black pants.
Karma and Emily smiled at Lily, who in return glared at them. Remus hooked his arms into Karma’s left arm and Emily’s right, leading them downstairs to the Great Hall.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

James smoothed his jet-black hair back, staring into the mirror. This was the night he’d been waiting for. Taking a deep breath, he picked up the single white rose and headed downstairs. Thankfully, no one saw him stumble on the last two steps as he caught sight of Lily. She was breath-taking. Her green eyes were trained on the floor, her head bowed down; he could tell she wasn’t happy. He barely heard Remus whisper ‘Good Luck’ in his ear before they disappeared. And then it was just him and her. He took a deep breath.

“You look beautiful. Um, I, uhh, got you a rose.” James said tentatively holding out the flower to her.
She looked up finally and stared at him for a second before taking the flower; he shivered as her fingers accidentally brushed slightly against his hand.
He offered his arms, hoping he wasn’t pushing his luck, thankfully, she placed her hand lightly in the crook of his elbow. As he led her downstairs, he felt like the luckiest person alive.

Sirius sighed as he buttoned his emerald green robes. He tried combing his unruly hair, but as always, nothing happened. Peter was waiting at the steps with a sulky, brunette.

James and Sirius had convinced the girl, what was her name? Anna? Annie? Anyways, they had convinced her to go with Peter to the ball so he wouldn’t feel left out. The girl wasn’t easy to convince, and while doing it, Sirius had forgotten to ask a girl himself. He didn’t actually have a girlfriend. Just a few flings usually only to keep him company in bed.

Peter suggested he go alone, but Sirius Black NEVER goes stag. It was possible he could go find a girl on the way to the Great Hall. He obviously couldn’t ask Laura as he had just broken up with her. (She was too clingy) He couldn’t go with Alice as she was currently dating Frank Longbottom, hmmm there had to be someone he could go with. At worst, he could go with a Slytherin. (His mother would be soo proud, he thought with a sneer)

He followed Peter and his date out into the Gryffindor Common Room.
Annette, (Peter’s date) shot him a dirty look, before reluctantly allowing Peter to pull her past the Fat Lady’s portrait.

Sirius scanned the Common Room, his eyes locking on Evelyn, a girl from fifth year. He quickly walked up to her.
“Hey, do you want to come with me to the Ball?” Sirius asked, flashing her his most charming smile.
“Uhm, sure.” The girl replied, blushing as she tucked a strand of her dirty blonde hair behind her ears.

Remus led Emily and Karma into the Great Hall. They looked at it in awe. There were small white circle tables placed around the edge of the Great Hall leaving a giant space in the middle, obviously for dancing. Many of the small tables were occupied with people. On the tables, hovered candles, as they looked around, they saw that the candles were the only things illuminating the room. Remus led the two girls to an unoccupied table. Karma sat down and watched Remus lead Emily to the dance floor where others were dancing.

It was obvious by the way his skin flushed that Remus liked Emily. The problem was Emily; either she thought of him as her friend, or just hid her feelings really well.

Five minutes later, Lily and James arrived.

“Wow” Lily whispered as they entered the Great Hall.
James nodded as he pulled her inside. They made their way to the table at which Karma was sitting at. James pulled out the chair for Lily and took the one next to her. He raised his hand, but seeing Karma’s glare, he quickly pulled it back down. He could practically hear Karma yelling at him not to touch his hair.

“James aren’t you going to ask Lily to dance?” Karma asked grinning at Lily.
Lily glared back at Karma who seemed to be enjoying herself.
“Uhh, do you want to dance?” James asked.
Lily nodded, receiving shocked looks from both of them.

Lily rolled her eyes and waited for James to stand up. Her theory was that James didn’t really like her. He was just fascinated by the fact that she, unlike all the other girls, wasn’t drooling over him.

James, finally getting over his shock, stood up, slipping his sweaty hands into hers.
He placed his hand tentatively on her waist, holding out his right hand to her. Lily warily placed one hand on his shoulder, the other into his other hand. Lily didn’t really know how to dance, but James obviously did as he carefully guided her through the other dancers.
James spun her around, happy to see that she was actually smiling.
“Oops,” Lily said, blushing as she accidentally stepped on his foot.

James laughed and pulled her close, Lily’s eyes widened as he leaned down, but the song ended.
“I better go see what Peter’s up to,” James said regretfully, as he backed away.
Lily nodded and headed back to the table, sitting down next to Karma.

“Looked like things were heating up.” Karma said wagging her eyebrows.
“No! He is still a git. So Edward hasn’t shown up yet?” Lily asked.
“Nope.” Karma replied, glancing at the door for the hundredth time.

Peter stared wistfully at Annette. She was dancing with another boy. Lily looked up at the sound of chairs screeching against the floor. It was Sirius and Evelyn.

“Hey, Peter, where’s Annette?” Sirius asked.
Peter pointed and resumed sulking.
Lily pursed her lips as James sat down next to Peter.

“Hey did you meet my date?” Sirius asked, nodding at Evelyn.
“Weren’t you going to go stag?” James asked curiously.
“You were going to go stag?” Karma asked snorting.
“You were going to go stag” Sirius said mimicking her voice.
Karma rolled her eyes, “Very mature.”
“Nah, I found Miss Evelyn here, to go with me.” Sirius said.
“Poor Eve, don’t worry, the night will be over soon.” Karma said, smirking at Sirius. Evelyn smiled unsurely at Karma, not knowing how to take the comment.

Emily smiled as Remus and her wove through the others.
“I’m sorry, but I cant come patrol the hallways this Tuesday with you. I’m, err, a bit busy.” Remus said.
“Oh, no problem.” Emily replied. She was used to Remus and the other three disappearing once in a while.
“Where do you guys go anyways?” Emily asked curiously.
“What?” Remus asked.
“You, James, Sirius, and Peter disappear two, three times a month. Where do you go?”
Remus stiffened, “Uh, Peter’s grandfather is, uhm, very very sick. Spattergroit. And we are very close to him, so we, uhh, visit him every month.” Remus replied.
“Oh” Emily said. Of course she didn’t believe him, but if he didn’t want to tell her, then that was fine, she wasn’t going to push him.

When they arrived at the table, they found out that Karma had gone back to the Common Room at twelve because Edward hadn’t shown up and Sirius kept mocking her.
Peter had also left, because Annette had never returned back to the table. Sirius and Evelyn and James and Lily were dancing.
Remus led her to the Common Room, kissing her cheek swiftly before bowing, like a gentlemen and backing up the stairs. Emily smiled and went up the stairs to the girls’ dormitory.

Five minutes later, James and Lily showed up in the Common Room.
“So Lily, would you like to come with me to the Three Broomsticks on the next Hogsmeade weekend?” James asked.
“No! This doesn’t change anything. I still don’t like you.” Lily said, glaring at him.
“Why? What did I do?” James asked, raising his hand to cup her cheek.

Lily quickly swatted it away. “Because. Your- Your annoying, and- And your-”
Lily struggled to make coherent sentences as James leaned down and kissed her forehead.
“Good night” he said quietly as he ran up the stairs.

Lily’s mouth opened and closed for a few minutes, her forehead burning. Dazed, she made her way up the stairs.

“Guys suck.” Karma was saying as she quickly changed into her pj’s.
“Not all of them.” Alice said in a dreamy voice.
Emily rolled her eyes as she got in bed.
Lily didn’t say anything as she got into bed; she wasn’t sure who she agreed with.

Karma groaned as she rolled over in her bed. The dormitory was exceptionally quiet.
Everyone was probably in the Great Hall eating breakfast. She would have loved to go back to sleep for another hour or so, but James had decided to hold a practice after breakfast. Cursing James as she rolled out of bed, she pulled on a pair of jeans and a gray shirt with the Hogwarts crest on the front. A few years ago, she had crossed out the Slytherin snake, but that had faded out.

As soon as she entered the Great Hall, she was stopped by Edward. She glared at him.
“I’m really sorry for not showing up last night. My brother Emmett kind of kidnapped me. I didn’t mean to stand you up.” Edward said apologetically.
Karma nodded, pushing past him to sit next to Lily and Emily. Karma tore off a piece of her toast, glancing at Lily. Lily was biting her lip nervously as she continuously glanced at James.
“What’s up with you guys?” Emily asked.
“Nothing.” Lily answered a little too quickly, “I don’t know.” Lily said sighing as Emily raised her eyebrows. Karma watched Lily stare at her plate as James and Sirius approached.
“Hey Karma, Practice is rescheduled to this afternoon.”
“Mhmm” Karma replied, she was still sleepy.
“See you guys later.” James said, following Sirius after glancing at Lily half-heartedly.

“Miss Bell, what is the incantation used when one wishes to change the color of something.” Professor Flitwick asked.

Lily nudged Karma, “Hmm, what?” Karma asked yawning widely as she looked around blearily, she had been taking a nice nap.
Sirius snickered, “Wonder why she’s so sleepy? It’s not like she was busy last night.”
Some of the Slytherins laughed.

Karma blushed as she stuttered over the answer Emily whispered in her ear.
She blushed even darker when Professor Flitwick suggested that instead of having Emily whisper answers to her, she get Emily to tutor her.

Sirius and the Slytherins laughed openly, and she could see James struggling not to laugh.
“Some friend you are!” she hissed at him.

Karma sighed as she stepped on to the Quidditch pitch. It was pouring, but James refused to cancel the practice. The fact that she was sleepy and that Sirius continued to make snide comments about her through out the day did not help. Also, spending an extra hour with him was not at all pleasing. She had asked Emily to tutor her, only to find out that Sirius was going to be there too. All the while that Em was explaining the spells; Sirius kept slipping in sarcastic comments about her.

Karma flew around slowly. Her mind was foggy, she was completely drenched and she didn’t want to risk crashing into someone. James called for a time-out, so they all landed. Suddenly a bludger hit her in her shoulder.
“Oops, I’ll go get that.” She struggled to hold onto the bludger as she made her way back to James and the others.
“Hey, Mark, did you know Edward and his brother went hunting? I guess they found bears more entertaining then Karma.” Sirius said, grinning as he glanced at Karma.
The bludger fell to the floor with a loud thump, seconds before Sirius fell.
Karma was on Sirius, one hand clutching his throat as the other swung back, hitting him square on his jaw. His eyes widened as her fist connected with his jaw, his head snapping back with a soft crack.
She stood up smiling. “That feels so much better.” Karma said in a satisfied voice as she turned and walked back to the castle.

Sirius gaped as he rubbed his jaw. “Bloody hell! She’s gone mental!”
James laughed, “You deserved that.” He said as he pulled Sirius to his feet.

Lily glanced at James. He was staring at her with a sad longing kind of look. Lily winced as she returned to staring at her cereal.
Karma dumped her books, and sat down across from Lily and Emily.
“You gonna eat that?” Karma asked, taking Emily’s toast before she could answer.
“What’s up with you and James?” Emily asked curiously, turning to Lily.
“Nothing!” She immediately felt bad, seeing Emily’s hurt look, “Sorry, I didn’t mean that, it’s just I don’t know he is so confusing. He is so aggravating, you know, but at the same time he’s kind of sweet.” Lily said, smiling slightly as she sneaked another glance at him. “What about you and Remus? Are you going to Hogsmeade with him?” Lily asked grinning at her.
“He hasn’t asked me.” Emily said frowning.
“It’s the twentieth century. You ask him.” Karma said, her voice muffled slightly with the food in her mouth.

“What’s up?” Remus asked as he saw James sigh dejectedly.
“Lily. She still doesn’t want anything to do with me. You said that if she spent some time with me, she’d like me better but she still hates me.” James said miserably.
Sirius nudged him, “There’s still hope for you, mate.” He said tilting his head slightly towards Lily who happened to be glancing at them at that moment.
James smiled at her but she had already looked away and he wasn’t even sure if she was looking at him or just scanning the room for someone else.
“Are you going to ask Lily to the Hogsmeade weekend?” Peter asked, slow to catch on.
Sirius filled him in as Emily cautiously approached them.

“Uh Remus, Can I talk to you.” Emily asked hesitantly, wondering why the hell she was taking Karma’s advice.

“Yeah, Sure.” Remus said as he got up and followed her out of the Great Hall, ignoring Sirius and James wolf-whistles.
“I was wondering whether, you’d um, like to go with me to Hogsmeade?” Emily asked.
Remus realized that she hadn’t realized that unconsciously, she had crossed her fingers.
“Oh, I am really sorry but that’s the night me and Peter and Sirius are going to visit his grandpa.” Remus replied.
“Oh, Never mind, I guess I’ll see you around.” Emily replied half heartedly.
“Hey, Em? I really am sorry.” Remus called after her. He felt wretched.
Emily nodded trying to conjure a smile, but it came out more as a grimace.

“Isn’t next weekend a full moon?” Sirius asked Remus as they watched James and the rest of the team practice. The game against Slytherin was in a week. (James had been forced by Karma to make Sirius sit out when he ‘accidentally’ hit her with a Bludger.
“Mhmm” Remus replied noncommittally. He was making study guides for them for the Potions exam tomorrow.
“Peter says he’ll keep me company.” Remus said, not looking up.
“What do you mean Peter? Me and James will be there too.” Sirius said.
“You guys don’t have to. I mean I know you have better things to do. Just because I cant date doesn’t mean you guys should give up your weekends to hang with a werewolf.” Remus said, still staring at his textbook, though he had stopped writing.
Sirius spun around, “Are you serious?” his eyebrows were furrowed together as he stared at Remus incredulously.
“No you are.” Remus replied smiling weakly at him.
“Ha-ha. Seriously, we’re coming with you” Sirius said in an unusually stern voice.
“It’s okay, you don’t have to. Anyways, I heard Peter was feeling a little down so maybe a little one on one (a one-on-one chat you sicko’s!!) with me will cheer him up.” Remus replied glancing around to make sure Peter wasn’t there.
“What do you mean? What’s wrong with me and James?” Sirius asked his forehead creasing from concern.
“Nothing,” Remus hurried, “He’s just a bit upset over his grades, don’t worry, I’ll cheer him up.” Remus replied guiltily.
He hated lying to his friends. Peter was not at all upset with his grades, in fact, he had recently gotten a B- in Charms, true that was only because Remus had been hissing the answer to him but Remus didn’t want his friends to be tied down because of him. He could recount many days when James had rescheduled a Quidditch practice or Sirius had stood up a girl because of his problem. Just because he couldn’t go out and have fun like a normal person didn’t mean they couldn’t. He smiled at Sirius before returning back to the study guides. Sirius reluctantly returned to watching practice.

Chapter 4: Oh no!
[Printer Friendly Version of This Chapter]

A/N: It's a bit fluffy sort of. Sorry! Not too good at that,

“Excuse me?” Lily asked indignantly.
“I’m just saying, it wouldn’t be a good idea to go outside tonight.” James replied sheepishly.
“Now your going to tell me when and where I can go?” Lily scoffed.
“No, just please don’t go outside.” James pleaded.
“Get out of my way Potter, I have things to do.” Lily said as she pushed past him.

“I want you to collect at least 10 vials of unicorn blood.” Said Professor Kettleburn.
Karma rolled her eyes, “Sure,” but as the Professor turned his back to the forest and her, Karma shouted out. “Aren’t you going to stay with me? How do you know I’m not just going to walk back to the castle and forget this dumb detention.” Karma asked, snorting slightly at the Professors thickness.
He smiled a sinisterly toothy smile. “Because, I have your wand, and I have placed wards so you cant get inside the castle until you complete the detention.” He strolled back to the castle lazily. Though hobbled would be a better word since one of his legs were missing.
Karma felt slightly worried. She was here, almost in the forbidden forest, which was forbidden for a reason, without a wand or any means of getting back to the castle. True she wasn’t going to be that far in the forest, professor had said the unicorn blood was spotted on the outskirts. She set out deeper into the forest wondering whether she could accio blood...oh wait, she didn’t have her wand. The whole detention was pointless. So what if she asked what help the ten uses of dragon blood would be to her when becoming an International Quidditch star. And so what if she questioned the point of Care of Magical Creatures. And so what if she had asked why Kettleburn was teaching when he should be ina retirement home.

Emily wandered down the hallway looking for Lily. Accidentally, she bumped into James.
“Oh, Sorry.” James said distractedly.
“Hey, have you seen Remus?” oops, I meant Lily.
“Uh yeah, he’s around.” James replied, again in the troubled voice.
“I thought he was visiting Peter’s grandfather?” Emily asked raising her eyebrows.
James head snapped back to face her. “He is.” James replied.
“ohkaay…whats wrong?” she asked, she could see he was worried.
“Just tell Lily not to go out anywhere tonight, okay? She’s in the Common Room. Thanks!” He said as he hurried off.
Well that was weird…

Inside the Common Room, she couldn’t find Lily or Karma. She turned around to Alice who was making out with Frank.
“Uh, Alice? Alice? Alice!” Emily shouted, frustrated.
Alice pulled away, “Sorry,” she replied blushing.
“Its alright, do you know where Karma and Lily are?”
“Uh-huh, Karma got detention from Kettleburn for pushing Zane and Thomas into one of the thestrals during Care of Magical Creatures. So she’s probably outside with Professor doing detention, and Lily said she was taking a walk. Seemed pissed at James, but that not unusual.” Alice finished with a smile.
“Kay thanks see you later. Don’t forget to use protection.” Emily said, winking as Alice and Frank blushed.

Lily checked the giant clock. It was twelve-thirty. Her arms were crossed tightly as she paced back and forth.
I hate him.
But he’s so sweet.
No he isn’t!
He got you a flower!
Only because he wants you to date him!
Isn’t that nice?
No, he is evil and arrogant, and vicious, and full-of-himself, and is not nice!
Right! Not nice.

Lily nodded as both parts of her mind agreed. She was about to turn around when something caught her eye. Some kind of large deer shaped animal was fighting something else. She couldn’t tell what they were since she was far away, but the undistinguished animal had large teeth and claws. It backed away into the forest and the deer/caribou thing chased after it. Lily shrugged, she decided she should go tell Professor Dumbledore or Professor Kettleburn about the animal. One of the students could get hurt. Before she could get some much as two steps closer to the castle, her body froze. Karma was doing detention in the forest.

Emily headed out of the front gates of Hogwarts, and headed towards the Whomping Willow, where she could see a silhouette. She guessed it was Lily, but a few feet before she reached the tree, she stumbled to the side, narrowly avoiding stepping on a rat. She stared as the rat scampered to the castle. Turning around she was met by a pair of glowing yellow eyes. Her own eyes widened as she stared into the scary, familiar eyes, before letting out a high pitched scream.

Her heart thudded violently against her ribs as she slowly backed away. She tripped over a rock landing on her butt. The werewolf followed, he crouched down and Emily could tell he was about to pounce on her. His claws were clenched tightly as he stood bent over. He seemed to be debating the best way to kill her. She snatched up her wand and pointed it at the werewolf. Her hand trembled violently and as she tried to think of a good curse. None came to mind. One part of her mind was screaming at her to get up and run but the other part of it laughed. She knew she could never out run him.

Suddenly her heart clenched painfully. She was obviously going to die, but what about Lily and Karma. She prayed that they weren’t outside. Or if they were, she hoped they would be with Professor Kettleburn. He would most likely be able to protect them. She focused on the werewolf again. He had moved back a few feet. Wasn’t he going to snack on her? He seemed to be debating whether or not to attack. He moved forward two steps before backing up three. Suddenly a large stag and a giant black dog jumped in front of her.

She watched as the dog and stag tried to jump on the werewolf but they seemed to be causing no physical damage. The stag was limping and as it raced around the werewolf, she could see a large gash on its underbelly and foreleg. The werewolf let out a long howl before retreating into the forest. The dog chased after it. The stag limped towards her, nudging her with his nose. Emily patted the stag before running back to the castle. Her mind begging her friends to be safe. She had to go tell a Professor. Even though she was a talented witch, she knew she could never fight a werewolf.
Karma stared at the silvery liquid. It was pretty considering it was blood. She wondered who was killing the poor animals. Currently however she hated the animal’s blood. She had only filled up one out of ten bottles. Tomorrow they had no classes. Would anyone notice her missing? Kettleburn wouldn’t make her stay out her all weekend would he? He wouldn’t dare, Karma thought, narrowing her eyes as she predicted his evilness.

She spotted a gleam of silver and she hurried forward, just as she was bending down to retrieve it into one of the vials, something hard collided against her shoulders. She flew backwards as the heavy black dog landed on her. She looked up bewildered as the shaggy black dog growled. The dog was covering most of her vision but she could barely make out a stag and a werewolf.
“What the fu-?” Her sentence was cut off as the black dog dug his teeth into her arm and dragged her to the side. He deposited her behind a tree before running back towards the werewolf.

She peered around from behind the tree and saw the dog and stag push and prod the werewolf towards the whomping willow. Suddenly, they disappeared. Karma blinked her eyes as she stared into the darkness. There was only the tree, swaying slightly in the wind. All of a sudden, a man appeared, besides the tree, almost as if he apparated, but Karma was sure apparition wasn’t possible on Hogwarts grounds. Em and Lily had only mentioned it a thousand times.
The man jogged towards her. As he ran through a clearing in the woods, she could see by the moonlight that it was Sirius. Karma got up and ran towards him. He was only wearing a pair of ratty, old shorts.

“What the hell is going on?” she asked.
Sirius responded by grabbing her arm and running to the castle. Karma had to run to keep up with him. When they were only two feet from the castle, Karma was tossed backward ten feet. Sirius whirled around.
“What did you do?” His face was grim for the first time as he glanced around.
“I cant go inside until I finish detention. And you didn’t answer my question; what is going on?”
“I’ll tell you later” Sirius muttered as he paced back and forth, running his hand through his hair. He stopped and motioned for her to follow.
“Stay right here. Don’t move! I’ll be back in a few minutes.” He said, staring at her sternly.

Without waiting for a response, he dashed around the castle and out of view.
Karma groaned. She debated whether or not to follow him. It didn’t look like she was going to get any answers, but decided not to. Nor did it look like she was ever going to finish her detention. She sat down with her back leaning against the tree.

Lily was about to turn around and get Karma when she saw a spot of blood on the ground. She turned around and saw James, lying not ten feet away. She ran towards him, her eyes widening as she saw the blood soaking his shirt. His eyes fluttered weakly as she knelt down.
“James? Get up! I’m gonna take you to Madam Merion okay?”
“Lily?” James whispered feebly.
Lily nodded, her hair swishing back and forth. The anti-James voice from her mind had disappeared.
“Not the Hospital wing. Too many questions.” James muttered between gasps.
Lily nodded again, tears were streaming down her cheeks as she muttered locomotor corpus. Casting a disillusionment charm on both of them. She ran upstairs to his dormitory. Edward, Sirius, and Remus’ beds were empty. Frank had fallen asleep downstairs in the common room next to Alice. She quickly laid him on the bed, before accio-ing bandages from her room. Pulling his shirt off gently, her stomach flipped as she saw the large gash on his arm and stomach. Conjuring a bottle of dittany and poured it onto the cut, watching as greenish steam billowed upward when it had cleared. The wound now looked several days old, but Lily was sure it would leave a scar. She then grabbed a towel and wiped off the excessive amount of blood. He looked a little less nauseating now, but he was still pale and a thin sheen of sweat dripped from his face. James groaned and opened his eyes.
“How do you feel?” Lily whispered.
“Rotten” croaked James, wincing as he sat up, “Where are we?”
“In your dormitory. Shh, Go back to sleep.” Lily murmured.
“Are you leaving?” James croaked again, “Please, don’t.”
Lily nodded and sat down on he edge of the bed, combing his hair with her fingers, as he closed his eyes.

Emily ran down hallway stopping at the gargoyle. As she tried to remember the password, her mind flitted to Remus. Thankfully, he was visiting Peter’s- her breath hitched in her throat as the pieces fell into place.

Sirius shifted in his sleep, pulling the orchid and jasmine smelling object closer to his face. The object in question moved, pushing away from him.
“Hmm?” Sirius asked groggily as he rubbed his eyes.
As he opened his eyes, he saw Karma trapped in his arms, as she pushed at his chest in a futile attempt to escape.
“Sorry” Sirius muttered sheepishly as he pulled away.
Karma shook her head as she stood up. “Do you think I can go in now?” she asked, eyeing the door.
“Only one way to find out.” Sirius said as he pushed her to the door.
“No way! Do you know how much being kicked ten feet feels like?!” Karma asked.
“I’ll stand right behind you so you don’t go flying.” Sirius replied grinning.
He stood behind her as she took a wary step forward. Nothing happened.
“Maybe a little closer?” Karma mused.
Sirius nodded, stepping closer to her.
“I meant to the wall.” Karma said, raising her eyebrow.
“Right.” Sirius replied with another grin.
Karma rolled her eyes and walked towards the castle, passing through with out incident.
Sirius ran after her, following her up to the Common Room.
Halfway up the girls dormitory staircase, Karma called out to Sirius, “You WILL tell me what happened last night.”
“Sure, sure.” Sirius replied.
Karma rolled her eyes and ran up the rest of the stairs, opening the door only to be ambushed by Emily.
Emily squeezed Karma tightly. “Thank god, your alright.”
“Karma pulled away, “Wait, you saw the werewolf too?”
Emily nodded, “I’ll tell you everything when we find Lily. Come on.”

Lily got up, careful not to disturb James, and crept down the stairs. Emily and Karma were in the Common Room.
“Hey.” She whispered, careful not to disturb Frank or Alice.
Emily pulled her to the side, as she cast a Muffliato spell.
They all recounted what they saw last night.
“James had an enormous cut on him? So did the stag.” Emily said furrowing her eyebrows.
“You don’t think he’s an animagi?” Karma asked curiously.
Lily nodded “It makes sense,”
“But then Sirius would be…the dog?” Karma asked skeptically.
“Did you guys see Remus? He’s the werewolf” Emily said solemnly.
“That’s why they’ve been disappearing.” Lily thought.
“Their obviously not registered animagi. Do you think Peter’s one too? He always goes missing with them, but I didn’t see any other animal.” Karma mused.
“Let’s talk to Sirius, he’s upstairs.” Lily said, leading the way upstairs.

Sirius was sitting on his bed, talking quietly with James.

“Sirius, you have to tell us everything.” Lily said crossing her arms, glancing at James who was trying to sit up.
“I know what he is.” Emily said.
“And we know what you guys are.” Karma said.
“And what would that be?” Sirius asked sneering.
It was as if their previous conversation had never occurred.
“Your animagi’s!” Karma yelled, annoyed.

Lily put a hand on her shoulder, restraining her from ripping his head off.
“What? So now your gonna go run and tell Dumbledore?” Sirius asked standing up glaring at her.
“Sirius.” James murmured weakly.
Karma glared at him. “You obviously don’t know us well enough. Emily and Lily would never tell Remus’ secret. Neither would I, no matter how much I loathe you.”
“Whatever. You better sleep with your wand under your pillow. The day this secret leaves the room, you will be dead.”
Karma rolled her eyes.
Sirius turned around to address James, “I’m going to see Remus. See you in a bit.”
“Can I come?” Emily asked, worriedly.
Sirius nodded and left the room with her.

Karma crawled on to James’ bed, while Lily hung back uncomfortably.
“Why didn’t you tell us?” Karma asked pouting.
James grinned, “Sorry, Guess I’m not an amazing friend.”
“No your not, and I’m never speaking to you again.” Karma sniffed haughtily.
“Oh, how will I live?” James asked sarcastically, “How about this. I tell you guys the whole story, and then you can speak to me again.” James asked glancing at Lily.
“Story time.” Karma said gleefully as she sat next to James and waved Lily over.
Lily perched on the edge of the bed. James reached out and grabbed her arm, ignoring her yelp as he pulled her next to him. Lily blushed slightly as James grinned at her and began telling the story dramatically.
“It was a dark and dreary night…”
Karma stared at him.
“Okay, it was a normal night, five years ago.”
Lily smiled slightly, embarrassingly aware of the heat radiating off of her face as James’ arm kept brushing against hers ‘accidentally’.

Emily followed Sirius as they made their way to the Whomping Willow. Sirius stopped and muttered something, and a long, sturdy looking branch materialized at their feet. Sirius picked the branch up, using it to prod a knot at the roots of the tree. Emily watched, amazed as the branches stopped swaying. Sirius motioned for her to follow. Suddenly he disappeared from view. She spotted a small opening between two of the largest roots. Taking a deep breath, she slid in. Sirius was inside, waiting for her on his hands and knees. She crawled behind him for what seemed like a century, finally entering alit room. Emily stood up as she glanced around the room. The walls of the room were scratched as well as the boards covering the windows. Quiet snores seemed to be coming from a small pile of rags on the floor. She turned around, directing her gaze at the four poster bed. Remus was sleeping their, twitching every three minutes. His brown hair was unusually dirty and unkempt.
“What’s going on?” Sirius growled.
The pile of rags gave a jerk and shifted, revealing Peter’s face.
“Dunno. A nightmare or something. Tried waking him up but nothing.” Peter continued quickly at Sirius’ stunned expression.
“He’s alive. Want me to get Madam Merion?” Peter asked.
“No. I’ll get her myself.” He glanced at Remus again, worry etched on his face, before sweeping out of the room.
Peter seemed to have went to sleep again. Emily crawled onto the side of the bed. There were new scratches on his face. She softly brushed his hair back with her fingers. Even in slumber, his face was full of concern. She held his dirty hand in her own pale ones, interlacing their fingers.

She wasn’t sure how long, but a long time later, Madam Merion showed up, though Sirius was no where. She examined Remus for quite a while, forcing him to drink various potions before stepping away to face Emily.

“Miss Emerson, he shall be awake shortly. Please remind him to drink his potion daily.”

Em nodded and watched Madam Merion disappear through the door. When she turned around again, Remus had awoken.

“Hey, do you feel any better?” Emily whispered, crawling back onto the bed.
Remus chose to ignore that question, staring at his hands for a minute before asking her one of his own.

“James told you?”
Emily nodded.

“I’m soo sorry.”
Emily stared at him, with a confused expression. “For what?”
“For what? I almost killed Lily and Karma today. I almost killed you. If it hadn’t been for James and Sirius… I hurt my best-friend. I’m a monster.” Remus said shamefully, not meeting Emily’s eyes.

“Remus, I don’t care what you are and you’re definitely not a monster. You are one of the sweetest, smartest, and handsome guy I’ve ever met. In fact…I love you.”
Remus’ eyes locked with hers.

I love you too. A lot. More than my life. “But I don’t.” Remus replied looking away.
Emily’s momentarily hurt face changed into accusation.
“Don’t lie. Your doing this for my safety aren’t you?” She accused, jerking him back, forcing him to look at her.

Remus didn’t reply.
“None of it matters to me.” Emily whispered, before taking his face and brushing her lips against his.
