Chapter 1: The Makings of a Ball
  [Printer Friendly Version of This Chapter]

A/N: Hello Readers! So this is the beginning of my Short Story- actually my first fic ever! This story is a tad shorter than most short stories but trust me there are multiple chapters. This first chapter is dedicated to my beta/ banner maker/ chapter images maker/ good friend- xtimexturnerx. As you can see, it is well deserved and without her help the fic wouldn’t be here (mainly because I wouldn’t know fanfiction exists) so thank you xtimexturnerx (check out her stories Breaking Traditions and Fatal Accident) Ok so I’m done rambling and all that I as before I go is to give my rectangular secretary at the bottom some feedback- good or bad please! *begging repeatedly* and to enjoy the story thanks!

“FOR THE LAST TIME- NO!” shouted Lily before she shoved two boys out of her train compartment. The two boys flew back into the corridor wall before seeing the fuming red-head’s face.

“DON’T ask me again, Potter, or else I WILL hex you. Same to you, Black. See what happens if you even try asking for him,” she said menacingly. And with that she turned on her heel and slammed the compartment door behind her. She slammed it with such force, James Potter, one of the boys who had been pushed out, thought if it had not been magical, the glass would have shattered.

James and his best mate Sirius Black quickly rose to their feet and walked back to their own compartment, avoiding the laughter of the witnesses to the incident. The entered the compartment only to find their other two best friends rolling on the floor laughing.

“Shut it” James said gruffly

Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew sobered up as quickly as possible (it still took them a moment to finally stop all together). Silent glares at the two followed until Remus broke through the silence.

“Prongs, did you really believe she would say yes? I mean come on; she even told you she’d rather date the Giant Squid,” he said.

“Yeah, well maybe the giant squid will pay her a visit one day.” They all knew Sirius was planning revenge as he sat their massaging the new lump on his head from hitting the wall.

“No, Padfoot, you are not pulling any pranks on Lily. Think how mad she will be! She’ll defiantly kick your sorry behind and I would have to let her. And to answer your question Moony, no I didn’t think she’d say ‘yes,’ but I thought she might at least hold a civil conversation. I really want her to see that I’ve changed. I mean isn’t it obvious that I’ve changed?” James finished innocently.

He thought about what happened back in the compartment. He’d walked in, said good morning, asked Lily out, made some jokes, asked Lily out a few more times, and got his butt kicked out the door. What could he have done wrong? It’s obvious but why can’t I change when I’m near her? What makes me act like a fool? If she wasn’t so darn perfect and beautiful and smart- Come on James get a hold on yourself.... you sound just as stalkerish as they say you are.

James continued arguing with himself mentally through the train ride. Not even Sirius could interrupt his train of thought, even though he had tried many times. He checked his watch every now and then. He knew they would meet once more before getting to the castle but James had to be ready this time. He needed to show her hey had changed.

                               ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Stupid Potter- can’t even let me get to the castle before he starts badgering me. Ugh he’s insufferable. Lily Evans slammed the compartment door so aggressively; the glass would have shattered had it not been magical.
“Touchy much?” Amelia Bones, Lily’s best mate for life to the max, asked innocently with an amused smile on her face. Lily rolled her eyes and plopped into the seat beside Amelia. She sighed and gave Amelia a look. Their other friend, Alice Earnheart, giggled looking between the two.
“Ugh! He’s so……..ugh” Lily said angrily. She cannot believe he had the nerve to do that. It infuriated her. She put her head in her hands and tried to erase the memory of the past 10 minutes. Of course, she was interrupted by a stream of giggles.  “Oh Alice, what are you laughing at? Is everything just peachy with you and Frankie Longbottom?” Lily asked sarcastically.
Alice continued to smile, but the laughing stopped at once.
“Yes, Lily, everything is just peachy with Frank. Thanks for asking. H-”
“Now before we get onto this sorry topic of Potter, boys, and more Potter, why don’t we talk about something else? Did you guys see the dress robes on the supply list this year?”Amelia interrupted Alice before she could provoke Lily any further. Amelia didn’t stop Alice just for Lily’s sake, though. She knew how far Lily’s temper went when it came to Potter and she thought that Alice shouldn’t feel the wrath so early in the year. It was just fair and that’s how Amelia was- fair and mediating. That was one of the things Lily loved about Amelia. “What do you think they are for?”
“I have no idea but whatever it is I am so excited. Do you think there is going to be another Triwizard Tournament?” Alice asked eagerly. Lily laughed to herself- Alice was so easily distracted.
“I doubt it. The last time they had one, someone was nearly killed and the Ministry has been really busy lately with that maniac running around.” Lily said quietly. Alice hadn’t noticed the volume change- she was too full of life. She continued to babble on about her dress robes and what kind of ball it would be and why there was a mask required with the dress robes. She continued to be curious about the Tournament. At one point she asked who would be the best competitors from Hogwarts.
“I think Li Chang would probably do well. He’s fair at Quidditch and he’s pretty smart.” Amelia said sweetly.
“Not to mention you have the fancy the sodding pants off him.” Alice said mimicking Amelia’s tone.
“I do not”
“Do too”
“Do not”
“Do too. Admit it. Who’s going to care? Lily? Me? We already know! Just admit it.”
“Fine”
“Ha! I win!” Alice got up and did a small victory dance.
“Okay, Alice you can stop now. Besides Amos isn’t a bad choice and by all means he’s better than Potter.” Lily said from her seat. She was still sulking from earlier. “It would be the last thing he needs to get that privilege. I can see it now, ‘Oh Evans how can you say no to a Quidditch star and a Triwizard Champion? Come on just one date.’”
“So you don’t doubt that he could be chosen?” Amelia asked. She was only a little surprised though.
Lily sighed. “No, I don’t doubt that he could be chosen but he already has such a big head I don’t want- WAIT THE HEADS MEETING!” Lily frantically checked her watch. 11:55- she was meeting the Head Boy in FIVE MINUTES. Lily didn’t want to make a bad impression so she quickly changed out of her clothes into brand new fresh robes and adjusted her pin securely over her heart. All of this within four minutes. She looked decent and left the haphazardly disarray of clothing that was once her compartment with as much dignity as she could muster. Then she ran down the corridor straight to the head compartment- actually straight into a wall first. No it’s not a wall. It’s- “Potter! Move now. I have places to be.”
“Not late are we Evans? Tsk Tsk. That’s not very suitable for Head Girls.” He said with a smirk.
“I don’t have time for you or your lame jokes. Please step aside or I will make you.” She growled. Why wasn’t he moving? Oh well, at least now she had an excuse for her tardiness.
“No wait, Evans. I just wanted to say I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to upset you I was just trying to- I actually don’t know. But I do know that I was a prat and a git and I’m sorry.” James said with the sincerity pouring out of his face. Lily raised her eyebrows. James Potter- actually apologizing to her? This was new.
Is it a trick? No look at the sincerity in his face and his voice. This definitely isn’t a trick.
James, I forgive you, for this. I’m not making any future promises and I really need to get to the Head Boy so if you could just step aside.” Lily tried not to sound mean, even if the words sounded so. She really did need to get to the Head Boy and was thankful when Potter obliged and stepped out of the way. She entered the compartment… the empty compartment. Lily groaned. Could he have left without waiting or maybe he was just as irresponsible as James. Whatever it was, she didn’t like not having him here.
“Oh quit you’re groaning. I’m here. I’m ready for a meeting. You are the one who’s late.”
James’s voice startled Lily. He’s not supposed to be here. Unless…. No. It can’t be.
“Get out. You can’t be Head Boy so leave. You have no business here.” Lily said coldly. She wanted to sound mean this time.
“You’re wrong. I am Head Boy and I can prove it more ways than one. No, really look. One, I have or this badge,” he held out his badge with his name on it, “and two, if you have ever read Hogwarts: A History you would know this compartment would have thrown me out the door unless I was Head Boy or there were certain emergencies. If you don’t believe me, we can grab Sirius and I could show you.”
As if on cue, Sirius strolled into the compartment whistling. “Hey lovebirds, what did you need me for? I heard my name and I- ARGGGHHHH!” Sirius had flown through the door and his back collided with the wall. He began to shout but his profanities were muffled by the door being shut by James. James was smiling innocently. “See need anymore proof? No? I didn’t think so.”
Lily shook her head. She didn’t need anymore proof. She didn’t want anymore proof. She couldn’t believe it- Dumbledore must be insane. She was going to have to live with him all year and now he had this one incident of him remembering something she had not hanging over her head. She scowled up at him and then turned her back to the folder of scheduled activities.
“Oh come on Lily Love, don’t be like that. I know it is your favorite book about Hogwarts, so I won’t make that much of a deal about me being a little smarter than you. Actually, one little date could make me forget.”
“Potter, I believe I said I’d hex you if you asked me out again. Doesn’t anything get soaked up in your big head or is it just filled with hot air? And don’t call me Lily Love ever again.” Lily said menacingly. “Now, if you value the condition your face is in now, let’s discuss these issues then go talk to the Prefects and then leave me alone. It’s for your own good.”
Potter looked a little uneasy, but he came over, sat down and opened the folder. They discussed Hogsmeade dates, round schedules, and finally the reason for the dressrobes- there was going to be a Halloween Ball. Lily looked at the description in the letter.
Halloween Ball
            Every student has been asked to purchase a pair of dress robes for Hogwarts’ First Annual Halloween Ball. Due to the many requests for such an event after the Triwizard Tournament held a few years ago, the teachers and I have allowed the celebration to continue but instead of the Yule Ball, we decided it would be more appropriate to allow the Ball during the Halloween Feast. The students have also been asked to purchase or bring masks to match their dressrobes. Apropos to the Halloween theme, it has been made a masquerade ball. Students may bring a date and there will be dinner and dancing. We will be having a band of students playing (They are actually quite good!) They call themselves the Sisterhood of Weird, or something to that effect. All we ask of the Prefects and the Heads is for decoration input and moderate supervision before and during the dance. (We have chaperones but we would like you to keep an eye out for any not-good natured fun). We hope all will enjoy the dance and ask that you come see the Headmaster for any ideas or suggestions.
On behalf of the Staff and the Headmaster of Hogwarts,
                                    Minerva McGonagall
                                    Deputy Headmistress
            Lily read the letter and looked up at James who seemed to be reading over her shoulder. He took a step back and said, “That actually doesn’t sound half bad.”
Lily nodded in agreement. “Maybe we could give it a name or something to make it sound more appealing. Halloween Ball sounds a little bland. People might be a little more interested if it sounds cool.”
It was James’s turn to nod. Lily could tell he was thinking of something good. She was doing the same but nothing sounded good. “Oh, how about this, ‘Masks under the Moonlight’,” She said finally. James looked at her funny.
“It’s a nice name but it’s a bit of a mouthful ‘The Masks under the Moonlight Ball.’ How ‘bout if we shorten it. Like…’The Moonlight Masquerade’!”
Wow. Lily was shocked. That was a good name. “I like it. I really like it. Nice job, Potter. And you know what that could easily take care of decorations as well. We could ask Dumbledore to change the sky a bit and the scene look like something out of a painting. The Prefects will have good ideas for that. But, have you heard the band before?”
James shook his head. “Maybe we should listen to them first and see if we should find an alternative just in case. We can review that with Dumbledore along with the other details. Do you honestly like the name?”
“Yes, I do. It’s very classy and elegant. Good jo- oh stop being smug, you know you can do something right. Oh! It’s almost time for the meeting. Let’s go.” Lily said and the walked out to the next compartment. James followed grinning smugly after her, but also looking a little relieved.
The Prefects meeting went by smoothly. James let Lily do most of the talking, but he helped settle people down and got the meeting started. The Prefects had good ideas about what they wanted. Lily thought they seemed like a good group of kids who got along well with each other. Not even the Slytherins were that bad this year. The meeting was finally over and the group had gotten a lot accomplished. As the prefects left, James helped Lily clean up the papers, schedules, and ideas.
“Hey! Give those back, Potter” Lily said as he snatched them away. She tried to reach for them but he was a bit taller and stronger.
“Hold on, Evans; watch this.” James was grinning as he held her back. He opened one of the drawers and slipped the papers inside. He shut the drawer and then reopened it, but the papers were no longer there.
“I was going to do that!” she whined playfully. Then she rolled her eyes and said, “I know it leads to the Heads Dorms, I do remember reading that. Merlin, why do you keep trying to show me up?”
“Because it’s fun. Oh, come on Evans, you know its going to be one hell of a year” James beamed at her.
Hell is the key word” she muttered then she turned to leave.
“Er…Evans?” James looked unsure about continuing, but he did anyway gathering his usual cocky arrogance. “How honored would you be if I was your escort to The Moonlight Masquerade?” He added a little arrogant eyebrow waggle to top it off.
Lily turned around and sighed. “Oh, Potter,” pausing for dramatic effect, “I spared you back in the Heads compartment because of your apology. But now, you don’t give me a choice. I never go back on my word.” She smiled mischievously at the nervous-looking James, but before he could grab his wand for defense-
Rictumsempra!
Lily left with a smug smile leaving poor James alone in the compartment rolling around on the floor laughing from her tickling hex.
“Ask me again, Potter, and I will hex you.”                ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The first few weeks of school went by and Lily noticed how much less Potter was bugging her. He still asked her out, in every free minute they had, but somehow, in between those invitations, he was sometimes polite, chivalrous, and even a little quiet. Lily wondered about this on her way to Arithmancy a few weeks before the ball. He was so helpful when they went to see Dumbledore and during the Prefect meetings. During their nightly rounds he wasn’t as bad, but they usually didn’t talk much and it was the same in the Heads Dorm. Classes were a different a story, with Sirius, but she couldn’t expect much with the two of them together. Overall, though, he seemed a little less annoying- only a little.
Lily couldn’t help but wonder if this was a trick. He was mocking her in some way. He has to be, she thought, why else would he be acting this way? Unless he’s trying to butter me up to go to the ball with him. Lily was really hoping he wouldn’t ask her again. She didn’t want to feel bad after the way he’s been acting, but it was Potter, she couldn’t go with him. Even if he was being nice and hadn’t asked me out more than twice a day since school started, which, I have to admit is an improvement. Lily was so deeply entwined with her thoughts, she was oblivious to the people around her.
BAM!
Papers, books, and Lily were now on the floor. Lily looked over to see who, or what, she had run into this time.
“I’m so sorry!” Amos Diggory said. He was the tall, handsome, and intelligent Hufflepuff Chaser/Captain- a lot like James, except not a prat and handsome and intelligent guess that just leaves tall and Chaser/Captain. He was also in the top ten of their grade and one of the most sought after boys in seventh year (unfortunately after James and Sirius- according to everyone else’s opinions.)
“Oh no, it was my fault. I should’ve been paying attention.” Lily said flustered. She was humiliated.
“No really, it was me. Here let me help you with that.” Amos grabbed the rest of the books and papers and held out his hand to help Lily up. She blushed and took it gratefully. He looked at her thoughtfully and handed her back the papers.
“Here you go, Lily, I am really sorry about walking into you. I really need to watch where I am going.” He’s so cute when he’s flustered, Lily thought. She tried to sound calm, cool and collected and not as if she had the biggest crush on him as she said, “Oh don’t worry about it. It wasn’t your fault I just have a habit of walking into things…or people.” Way to make yourself look good, Lily thought sarcastically. Amos looked a little uneasy about something and Lily thought she must have made him feel that way so she muttered an embarrassed goodbye and started to walk back toward her class.
“Lily!” He called after her quickly before she got too far, “er, if your not already, erm going with someone to the masquerade, er, wouldyougowithme?”
“Er, I’m sorry, I didn’t quite catch that last part,” Lily said apprehensively. She wanted to make sure she heard what she thought he tried to say.
Amos took a short breath and said again, “Would you go with me, to the masquerade ball, on Halloween? I mean if you already have a date, I understand I just thought-”
“That’s sounds great. I would love too. Thank you,” Lily said with a sweet smile, trying to suppress a very loud squeal. She was also blushing, a lot.
“So, I will pick you up around 5? At the staircase in front of the Great Hall?” Amos asked looking relieved and extremely pleased at the same time. Lily noticed that he was blushing as well. She just nodded and smiled.
“I’ll see you around then,” he said looking very pleased and then turned around to his class.
Lily was happy. No, she was more than happy. This was so good, not even Potter could mess it up. Now, she even had a better excuse for him not to bother her. Would this hurt his feelings though? He is being awfully nice- wait why do I care? And, with that she hurried off to Arithmancy almost skipping down the corridor.
Chapter 2: Cause and Effect
  [Printer Friendly Version of This Chapter]
Lily was so relieved that this was the last class of the day. If it hadn’t been, she was in clear danger of bursting. She needed to tell Amelia and Alice. When class was finally over, Lily nearly sprinted to the Gryffindor common room. Once the Fat Lady let her in, Lily ran to find her best friends.
They weren’t in the common room, in their bedrooms, or in the bathrooms (she didn’t look, she knocked).
Where are they? Lily decided to wait in the common room until they came back. It shouldn’t be long; dinner was in only an hour or two.
Lily walked down the steps and into the common room. They weren’t there but she decided to go to her favorite chair and maybe read a little bit. She was about to plop down into the cushy one by the fire until she heard her name; or her surname rather.
“OI! EVAN’S! OVER HERE!” Sirius beckoned from across the room.
Lily groaned. She looked over her shoulder toward Sirius, who was sitting with James and the other Marauders on the big cushy couch by the window. He was motioning for her to join them but she smiled and shook her head no. She knew better than to go over there. Sirius just shrugged and sat back down talking to the Marauders again.
Lily sat back down and opened her book. Not even two minutes later she had little tap on her shoulder.
“Can I help you with something?” Lily asked nicely.
“Go out with me, Evans?” James smiled and cocked his head. Remus was shaking his for some reason.
“No”
“Then I am afraid you can’t help me. Sorry, Lily Flower.” James flopped down on the couch, looking only slightly hurt, next to Sirius and began trying to balance a quill on his nose. Remus sat on another couch reading his book, next to Peter who was working on some homework. Lily was annoyed now.
“Didn’t I ask you not to call me Lily-,” she started
“-Love? I didn’t. I called you Lily Flower,” James finished simply.
“Don’t call me that either. Potter, if I can’t help you, may I ask to what do I owe this plea- obligation?” she said heatedly. James opened his mouth to speak, but Sirius quickly interrupted with a stupid reply.
“Why art thou talking with such good grammar?” All in the group except Lily laughed; she just rolled her eyes. Sirius continued, “It must be that foul book. Come, James! We must rescue this fair maiden from those treacherous grammar-correct books!”
With that, James ripped the book from Lily’s hand and began balancing it on his nose. Sirius grabbed Lily’s wrists in one hand and held her back despite her many protests.
“What do you think of my trick, Evans?” James was having so much fun with this.
“You look like an otter. Hmm ‘Potter the Otter’- good circus name. Now you can go join one and fulfill your life dream.”
“But my only dream is to be with you.”
“Ugh!” Lily shuddered at the thought which caused them to laugh more. Lily continually tried to break free, but Sirius was much stronger. It’s that damn sport- stupid Quidditch muscles.
“BLACK, LET HER GO BEFORE I STUN YOU!” Lily looked over to see a very angry Amelia and a very nervous looking Alice coming over to the group. Amelia continued shouting at Sirius even though he had his already let go and James was trying to defend his poor mate.
“IF YOU EVER SUBJECT HER TO THAT KIND OF MISERABLE FOOLISH TORTURE-”
“Calm down, Amelia! Really we weren’t doing anything! Just having a laugh! Even ask Lily!” James was keeping his voice down trying to not draw attention to himself.  Amelia, still fuming turned to Lily, waiting for an answer, clearly about to tear someone’s head off. Lily’s lips twitched but she knew better than to laugh right now.
“As much as I’d love to see Potter and Black being scolded, they’re right, it was all just for laughs. Are you okay? You seem a little wound up.” Lily was concerned for her friend. Amelia didn’t act like this. Usually she would jump in on the circus or at least laugh from the sidelines. Today, however, her friend just flopped down next to Peter and held her hands in her head. “It’s been a bit of a rough day, I have detention.”
“What?!” Lily exclaimed
“Yeah, I know, but apparently it’s not becoming of a young lady to throw things a Slytherin’s head. In my defense though, he had it coming.”
Alice seemed to agree because she was silently nodding at everything. Lily inwardly chuckled because it seemed like Alice was slightly afraid of Amelia after spending this apparently “horrible” day with her. As she pulled both her friends into a well needed hug, a thought struck her. She stopped and tensed in mid- hug and dared to ask a question she thought she already knew the answer to.
“Er, Amelia, who did you say you were chucking things at?” the red head asked skeptically. Amelia and Alice exchanged a nervous glance and pathetically tried to make things seem better than they were.
“Well, you see Lily, he really did deserve it and it doesn’t really matter who it was, Madam Pomfrey said he’d be out within a week or two…the cauldron was a bit thick and metal….”
“Ohhh James, that’s a nice ring” Alice was clearly trying to change the subject as her friend trailed off, but the boys didn’t seem to take any notice, oblivious as they were.
“Thanks, Alice. It’s been passed down in my family as a sign of the Gryffindor tradition. See the gold Lion in the oval ruby, and the words of Godric Gryffindor around the silver band? Sirius would’ve had a similar one with the snake of Salazar Slytherin on it but his mum’s a hag and went crooked when he got into Gryffindor. No offense, mate.”
“Oh it’s no problem, but I don’t think hag covers it. I was thinking more along the lines of evil, twisted, sick-minded, pure-blood loving, Slytherin crazy-”
“We get it, Black. Now back to my question. Which Slytherin, Amelia Susan?”
Amelia scowled at her friend for saying her middle name. She shot death glares at Sirius and James who were stifling laughter and mouthing “Susan” to each other. When she turned back to her glaring friend, however, Amelia’s anger subsided and replaced with guilt. She sighed and said, “Okay, Lily, it was Snivel- Severus. But he was being…..he just really deserved it.”
Lily just sighed deeply and forgave her. As she closed her eyes she knew this was it- how it would always between Severus and her. He was no longer the little boy who had brought her into the magical world. He had grown into a darker meaner and creepier person. No one really will ever understand their little connection but Lily would just have to live with that. It was not something she liked to think about. It hurt her to see her oldest friend fall into a bad crowd from which she couldn’t save him. Lily couldn’t admit it to herself yet, but she knew she would have to accept it. A few moments later, Alice brought Lily back to the present.
 “So Lils, what were you doing here? Not that you aren’t welcome, but I didn’t think you would enjoy bonding with the Marauders.”
As soon as she remembered the reason for her visit, Lily immediately brightened. She began telling them all about Amos, causing many squeals and hugs of congratulations from all except one person. Alice was rambling away and about celebrating with a hen’s night.
“Awe Alice, I’m going to have rain check that. I’m sorry. It’s just that I’m swamped with all this stuff for the ball and school work and everything.” Alice had pleading look on her face that also meant she wasn’t convinced. Lily continued, “Tomorrow’s really busy, too. We’ve got to meet with the band at eight tomorrow morning and we have a meeting with Dumbledore and the Prefects, right James?”
James had been very quiet ever since Lily announced that Amos had asked her to the ball. He sat on the couch not really listening to anything anyone was saying. His eyes were glazed over and his friends could tell he was thinking. At the sound of his name, his head shot up and he quickly came out of his stupor to agree with Lily.
“Erm, yeah, Alice,” slowly gaining some bravado. “Sorry we have a lot to do and I need the Head Girl to be alert and ready to work hard.”
“Merlin, mate, you’re running a ball not playing Quidditch,” Sirius said earning him a punch in the arm from James.
He seems okay, Lily thought as she laughed with everyone else.
“All right I’m hungry and it’s dinner time. Who’s coming with me to feast on yummy foods?” Sirius said suddenly, but before any could hop up to follow him, Peter was racing out the portrait. The group could have sworn they hear him utter the word ‘cheese’ between breaths, but no one was really surprised about that. Soon Alice followed, nearly tripping as she raced Remus. Lily followed Amelia up the stairs to the dorm sat on one of the beds and groaned into the pillow. Amelia smiled sadly down with the red-head on her bed.
“Feel bad about, Potter?” Lily, still face down in the pillow nodded. “Well are you happy Amos asked you out?” Lily nodded again, but this time she got up and was very excited.
She told Amelia, “I don’t regret saying yes to Amos. It’s just that Potter looked upset for a bit and I didn’t mean to hurt his feelings that way. He just happened to be there. I mean how could he possibly expect me to turn down Amos when I’ve turned him down more than a million times? He just comes back every time like I will somehow say yes! Is he mental or just thick? No means no!”
“Lils, it’s called being hopeful, and I bet he’s better now. I know I’ve seen a change especially in the last two years. He’s matured. Do you see that?
Lily snorted. “No. and even if I did- this could just be resulting from the Head Boy badge or just a late blooming knowledge of common courtesy. How would I really know if he changed?”
“Have you ever given him that chance?”
At this Lily had no response. She knew the answer was no, but her little nagging voice that wanted to justify everything she did (even if her actions were wrong) was trying to do its job. Before Lily could ponder too much about it though, Amelia broke in again. “Look Lils, I’m very happy for you because I know you’re happy with Amos, and I totally understand why you feel the way you do, but maybe it’s not because you’re going with Amos. Maybe it’s because you know you hurt Potter when he didn’t deserve it. My point is- don’t treat him like the scum bag he used to be when he doesn’t act like it.”
Lily still wasn’t sure if she was convinced the boy had changed, but she really appreciated her friend’s advice. It did make some sense and a big difference in how she felt.
“You can go ahead if you want. I’ll be down in a few,” Amelia assured her before entering the bathroom to wash up a bit before dinner. Lily went on ahead downstairs but stopped before the last step when she heard familiar voices. It seemed like James and Sirius were having a similar talk- or were they?
“C’mon it’s now or never, Prongs,” she heard Sirius say.
“I don’t know if it’s the right way to go about this.”
“Look, if you want something, then go get it, otherwise it just might pass you by.”
“But this is complicated. What if it doesn’t work out, What if some one gets hurt?
“Hey, its destiny, trust me. No one will get hurt and if it doesn’t work out something else will. No one can escape destiny. I know; I’ve tried” This earned even a small chuckle from Lily on the stairs. By this point she knew it must’ve been a prank or a joke. Sirius was always thinking a bit recklessly, but James never seemed to react like this before.
Maybe I messed with his brain a bit?
“Fine, Sirius, I’m in. But right now, I’m starved. Are you coming to dinner?”
Sirius mumbled something about being down there in a minute or two but Lily couldn’t quite hear it. She waited a moment or two after she heard James shuffle to the portrait. Then she walked down slowly and avoided Sirius. She didn’t want to seem as if she had been eavesdropping; that would be very wrong for a Head Girl and eavesdropping on the Marauders when they are plotting could lead to some murderous consequences.
The next day Lily noticed Potter acting quieter than usual, but only because he had no reason to ask her to the ball. Other than the silence, he seemed okay with her. He had been very bright and energetic this morning with the band (who were actually called “The Weird Sisters”- McGonagall had gotten their name wrong). He had seemed to be at ease with Dumbledore and the Prefects and was not in any way sulking or moping. It was as if nothing had happened, except the ask-Lily-out switch had been turned off. James seemed to be as relaxed as ever.
Lily’s mind was a different story. She was buried deep in her pile of work. She had all her homework under control but she still had…
-The ball decorating and organizing (Why do prefects have to be so needy? They should know how to hang up balloons without making them float into the fake sky!)
-The constant flirting with Amos (Alice said this was completely necessary)
-The planning of her own wardrobe for the dance (Where’s the cute hair design I saw in Witch Weekly?)
-Her friends’ love lives (not my business but they make it so- Amelia is over Li but who is her mystery date? Note to self: figure this out later. Alice is just happy to stalk- I mean love Frank)
- And, needless to say, Potters behavior (not even going to go there)
These not-so- simple things bugged Lily constantly. She couldn’t wait for the dance so that more than half of it would be done with. Regardless, she knew she could put up with it and the dance was also one of the most anticipated things of the year so far. Lily couldn’t wait.
As for the mysterious prank of the Marauders, Lily never heard of anything suspicious and  nothing major had been pulled in a while. All Lily knew was that it if had been done during the dance, someone (Potter, Black, etc) would be very….sore….the next day.
Disclaimer:
Seriously I WISH I was a rich british woman and the creator of the most awesome book series known to man....but sadly I really *deep breath*  am not.
Finally the night had arrived. Lily had done all the fine tuning on her looks as possible. She examined her knee length black dressrobes with a golden trimming around the bottom and inner edges that extended to the V-neck. The fabric was not a jet black but instead a black material with golden glitter within it. The mask was gold with beautiful gemstones on each edge. Her vibrant red hair was pinned up in curls to resemble a small amount of bubbles perched at the top and a few stray curls trailing all over. She was extremely happy with the way she looked and was ready to have a good time.
At five, Lily and her friends were waiting at the top of the staircase leading to the Great Hall. Carefully trotting in her black stilettos, she walked down the steps to meet a handsome bloke with jet black hair, in a golden mask, wearing a light smirk on his face.
“Good Evening, Lily,” he said with a gentlemanly bow.
“Good Evening, Amos,” the girl replied with a blush, “How did you know it was me?”
“Hmmm, your unique hair or your vibrant eyes might have given me a clue.” If possible, Lily blushed further, but Amos continued, “I actually think it was the fact that you and you alone are always this stunning to me.”
Lily mumbled a thank you and linked her arm with his. She noticed her friends had met up with their dates as well. Alice was flirting with Frank and Amelia was talking to….SIRIUS?
Amelia caught Lily’s jaw dropping expression and explained while Sirius had his back turned. She pointed to the two them and mouthed ‘just friends- promise’ ‘not dating.’ And then with a nonchalant shrug ‘what the heck?’
Lily laughed at this; she agreed with Amelia- what the heck? Amelia was sensible and Sirius wasn’t stupid enough to try anything when he is with her. When Amelia smiled and turned back to her date, Lily had done the same. With that they proceeded into the Great Hall for their Moonlight Masquerade.
The ordinary dining area had been transformed to resemble an elegant, sophisticated, banquet hall that was set outside under the moonlight. The tables were dressed with a white cloth and midnight blue trimmings. The center piece was a floating crescent shaped moon with dazzling stars revolving around it.  (James thought it would be a bit uncomfortable for Remus if there were any full moons- even if they were fake) The ceiling had been enchanted to portray a cloudless night with thousands of scintillating stars and a beautiful crescent-shaped moon in the center. The entrances had been decorated with dark blue, gold, and white colored balloons twisted in each other to form a spiraling pillar of balloons and there was a large dark blue banner with the words “Welcome to the Moonlight Masquerade Ball”
As Lily admired the wonderful job everyone had done on these, she couldn’t help but feel grateful to James. She knew that without him, her life would have been a lot more hectic and Lily had to admit the boy had some classy ideas when it came to parties. Winning a girl over- not so much, but parties- definitely. Lily knew she would have to say thank you when she saw him.
She saw Amos admiring the decorations as well and looked over to where he was looking. There was an odd sight there. A handsome boy with light brown hair, beautiful blue eyes, and a stunning smile was linked arm in arm with Melinda Merquewitz. Lily didn’t care for the girl because she was a complete cow, but she could say Melinda looked pretty nice tonight and she was quite aware of her date’s sudden popularity.
This boy, although very handsome, was also a mystery. Who is he? What house is he in? What year is he in? No one knew. No one cared .Everyone assumed he was a transfer, but the reason didn’t matter. Lily pulled her eyes away from him and reminded herself to go and introduce James and her later as the Heads formally and welcome him- if he were a transfer student (if not they would look like idiots).
Now it was time for her to enjoy the ball with Amos. She tugged at his arm and pulled him to the table where her friends were sitting. He quickly pulled out of his ogling and said to Lily, “She wishes she was as pretty as you” As usual, Lily blushed at his compliments and sat down in the chair he pulled out for her. He is such a gentleman.
Each table sat twelve, which was good considering the fact that Lily had to sit with the marauders, thanks to Amelia and her date. Lily said hello to everyone and their dates, thanked James for all his help, and prepared herself for the dinner portion of the ball. The Headmaster walked up to the stage, said a few opening words and then dinner began.
It went by very smoothly; however, Lily did notice three things out of the ordinary. The first being Peter’s absence, but when this was mentioned, the Marauders explained that he was sitting with his date’s friends and there wasn’t enough room on this table anyway.
 The second being James was continuing to be considerably chipper. He looked like he was enjoying his date’s company very much (his date was some random girl from Ravenclaw in their year and needless to say she was enjoying his company very much as well.)
The third thing didn’t please Lily, but she wasn’t exactly sure she was seeing what she thought. All throughout dinner when Amos thought Lily wasn’t looking, she noticed he took a quick glance at the table behind them. Melinda and her date were seated at that table and if Lily was correct, she knew he was looking at her. Her brow furrowed and she glanced at Amelia and Alice. They wore the same expression, but no one said anything about it.
When dinner was over it was time to dance. The band got up on stage and played like there was no tomorrow. Everyone got up to dance and was happy with the music. Lily danced with all of her friends, all their dates and Amos. After a little bit he said he would go out and get something for them to drink. Lily continued to dance while she waited for him.
But, after ten minutes past, Amos didn’t come back. Lily was patient and waited a bit more… twenty minutes….twenty-five minutes….thirty minutes.
Lily knew something was up by that time and she was furious. She left the dance floor and Amos was no where near the punch bowl- surprise surprise. She marched off to the next broom cupboard and low and behold there was Amos and Melinda doing a tad more than snogging.
“Oi! Get your own- LILY?! MERLIN- OW, OW, OW!” Lily grabbed his ear and yanked him out of the closet where he was wearing nothing but his dress shirt, loosened tie, knickers, and socks.
“HOW DARE YOU, YOU LITTLE SCUMBAG! WITH THAT SLAG! I OUGHTA TURN YOU INTO THE COMPLETE TOAD YOU ARE!” She dropped him on the floor and pointed her wand toward a cowering Amos.
“Lily! STOP! He’s not worth it,” a voice called out. Lily turned and saw Melinda’s date running toward them.
“No! LOOK at them! Melinda too!” The boy looked shocked but he didn’t shout at Melinda. He just grimaced and turned toward Lily.
“They really aren’t worth it.” He glowered down at the others coldly but continued to talk to Lily, “Let’s just walk away now knowing we are definitely better than them.”
Lily didn’t want to leave but she knew he was right. Just as she turned to leave she heard Amos and Melinda whisper simultaneously,
“Nigel…”
“Lily…”
“I’m sorry”
The boy named Nigel glared coldly at the two and turned around waiting for Lily. She took this opportunity to fire one small spell.
Let’s just say people will see them for what they really are tomorrow.
Then she strode up to Nigel and they walked away together. It took everything Lily had not to turn around and bash Amos’s face in but she had that kind of self control. It took a lot more self control for Lily to hold back her tears.
The two walked in silence together for a while, but Lily knew she couldn’t hold back her tears much longer. She spotted the entrance to the courtyard and whispered shakily, “I need a minute alone” before sprinting toward it.
Lily could hear Nigel follow her but she wouldn’t stop. He called out her name, but still, she wouldn’t stop. Lily was determined not to cry in front of him and show him that Amos had hurt her. For some reason she felt compelled to keep him from seeing her pain.
But just as the first tear escaped her, Nigel had caught up to Lily, spun her around, and pulled her into a comforting embrace. Lily didn’t try to fight because she knew she couldn’t so there she sat sobbing outside in the middle of an empty, cold courtyard with a boy she had never even known existed.
Chapter 4: Who, What, How?
  [Printer Friendly Version of This Chapter]
After a while, the sobbing subsided and Lily looked up into the boys eyes. People always said she had the most stunning eyes but compared to his blue ones she didn’t know if the title fit anymore. He felt her move and looked down.
“I’m sorry for ruining your dressrobes, not to mention your night.” She said softly.
“You didn’t ruin my night. She did. As for the dressrobes, its just a piece of cloth. Are you ok?” the boy looked very concerned.
“I’m fine” she replied wiping a tear of her cheek and pulling the loose strands of hair behind her ears. She was finished crying for him, the scum. Though, she did feel bad for...for... “Look we never got to formally introduce our selves. I’m Lily Ev-“
“Evans- I know. Actually who doesn’t know?! James Potter goes around school proclaiming his love to you everyday”. This made Lily blush but if he noticed he didn’t show it. “I’m Nigel, Nigel Crempton. I think we have Herbology and Ancient Runes together.”
“Really? I mean, not to be offensive or anything, I just never really noticed you in any of my classes. Maybe my friends were right, I do live in a bubble” Lily laughed softly and she could see a twinkle in the boy’s eyes. Was she really that blind? Ironically the boy pulled out a pair of thick brown glasses from his pocket.
“You may remember me with these. I just recently got contacts…you know what those are yea?” he continued when she nodded, “but I still carry these just in case.” Lily recognized him immediately from the minute he put the glasses on. He was the very quiet, yet intelligent boy in most of her classes. Nigel…she had never bothered to find out his name.
“What house are you in? I remember you, just not all that much. Forgive for sounding that rude and conceited but it’s the truth” Lily said quietly. She was big on honesty right now.
“Well…er… I am actually pretty ashamed to say this thanks to Amos the A-hole, but I’m in Hufflepuff.” He ducked his head sheepishly.
Lily smiled ruefully, “I think I can forgive you, maybe not him, but you…I think so. Actually, it’s pretty funny you mentioned that name. I’ve never heard anyone but James and Sirius call him that.”
Nigel raised his eyebrows and asked surprised, “Really? I’ve heard loads of people say it. I mean Amos isn’t exactly popular with some people.”
“There goes me and my bubble again” Lily laughed, but she hit another realization, “Actually I haven’t heard either of them call him names like that since… well, since I got the date. I wonder why...”
All of a sudden Nigel burst out. “You! You were the reason!” Then he began to redden in embarrassment and frustration. “What I mena is…erm…you were…oh bollocks. Yes, you were the reason he stopped because he knew it would make you unhappy so he didn’t say anything. He also knew you wouldn’t believe anything if he told you.”
Lily thought about and the more she did, she realized he was right. There was no way in hell, Lily would’ve have trusted James. She would have blamed it on jealousy.
“Wow, that’s respect on a whole new level. Who knew that James could be sweet?”
“Um, everyone? Ok I’m kidding, but you’d be surprised at how much you didn’t know about him.” Nigel was smirking at how fast her expression had changed from shock to disbelief.
“Oh, really?”
“Yes really, I mean there’s a lot more to the guy than a handsome face and brilliant quidditch skills.”
“Then why don’t you date him, Nigel?” Lily rolled her eyes, but smiled. She has heard all of that before.
“Ehh he’s not exactly my type. I’m more of a lady- lover.” This caused Lily to laugh but it gave her a fantastic idea.
“You know what? I am so tired of hearing what a good bloke Potter is. I want to see it. I want proof. Can you do that Nigel? Can you prove that Potter is a good guy?”
Nigel turned to face Lily. He broke into a handsome grin so wide, it could have given the Cheshire Cat are run for its money, and he said to her, “You bet.”
A/N Okay, so all I ask right now is that you lower your wands and hear me out. To all of you who noticed, I am sorry that the Chapter 3 repeated. I was updating it and I forgot to change it- I know I’m terrible. I’m very, very, very sorry. I am also sorry I made you wait so long for this chapter and that it’s a taddd short. It is partially up because I wanted to procrastinate for my midterms this week, but I have been loaded with work for school and extracurricular that I haven’t gotten a chance to retype this chapter (it got deleted :’( along with chapter 5). Good News though!- I had originally planned to end the story in the next chapter but if I get some reviews (or I just really feel like it) I will make an epilogue and extend it one more chapter! Thanks to all my readers and especially to my reviewers- this one is for you guys. Now for those of you who bothered to even read this very long and boring note – please review!!!
A/N 2: and for those who decide to skip that- please read and review!!!
Chapter 5: Proofs
  [Printer Friendly Version of This Chapter]
A/N: Ok so this is it. This may be the end of my first fic ever. I say may because I may add another chapter. It would be the epilogue. That’s up to you, though, my lovely readers. I don’t know exactly if the story needs and epilogue, so I will let my audience help me decide if they’d like to. I’m just asking for you wonderful readers to drop a review and let me know. If this indeed is my last chapter I just want to say thank you to all my readers, especially those who reviewed, and my beta/ banner maker/ chapter image maker- xtimexturner. Without her none of it would have been possible. So thanks and enjoy-
Disclaimer: I really am not J.K. Rowling and none of her characters or her franchise is mine. Happy? I admitted it! (This goes for the whole story in case I forgot any chapters- like 4 for instance)
“Okay so first, before I begin my monologue about Potter,” Nigel said as the two continued their stroll. “I want to know what you hate about the bloke and then I want to know what you think a guy should be like.”
“Well, the first one is easy- I hate how he runs his hand through his stupid hair. I hate his arrogance. I hate how he thinks he owns the school and how he thinks it’s ok to put other kids down because he’s better at something. I hate how he thinks he can show off because we are tied for top in our class and he’s decent at a stupid sport. I hate how he knows he can have any girl in school, and I absolutely HATE that out of all that bloody girls that love him he had to pick me to annoy the most.”
“Well, aren’t you a little ball of hate? And I take it that’s not all” Nigel laughed when she shook her head. His amusement in how fired up she got was familiar. “Okay, so half those things he does is in our guy code book under ‘How to Impress Chicks: Just be Stupid, They Like That.’ He thinks that acting like an idiot can get you the attention you want. Actually, I should say he thought, because he hasn’t been doing anything stupid lately. It’s been a while since an infamous Potter Prank hasn’t it?”
Lily could see what he meant. It was obvious the boy wanted her attention and she realized that if she looked at the situation in another way, James really wasn’t all that conceited anymore. After telling Nigel her mini-epiphany, he continued.
“You see the poor bloke isn’t so bad. Now give me the best qualities you look for in a guy.”
Lily began listing her favorite characteristics of the perfect boy: smart, caring, respectable, sweet, chivalrous, funny and witty, clever, honest, unique, loyal, and modest were just a few…
“Ahh, a few alright, well let’s make my job easy. First, I know you’ve seen him be chivalrous, smart, funny and witty, loyal to his friends, and caring. He does it everyday in school. You also said yourself that he is one of the smartest in your class. He obviously cares for you. As for others, well let’s just say on Sundays, he’s up early volunteering to tutor kids like me who have trouble in Transfiguration.
“Sweet and respectable are already covered. Potter really only cares for his body for two reasons, and neither are girls- health and Quidditch. Potter doesn’t care what other girls say or think about his body except you. He doesn’t flaunt it as much anymore because he knows you don’t care. This doesn’t exactly make him modest, but everyone has a flaw or two.
“Some key points: honest and unique- James does not sugar coat, especially on the pitch. And judging by the pranks and million ways he asks you out, I think it’s safe to say he’s unique. The guy is really a nice person, it just take a chance to know him. Have you ever given him that chance, Lily?”
Lily just looked at Amos incredulously. This was the second time someone asked her that question but this time she guilty answered, “No.”
She felt horrible for judging him so quickly, but then she realized that this was the boy who spent all his time doing these things for her and that he truly deeply cared for her. Nigel was right, about everything.
“Nigel, how did you know all of this?” she asked looking up at him, but instead of seeing a smile or a chuckle, he grimaced, as if he wished she wouldn’t have asked.
“Well, I seem to overhear things a lot. I’m kind of invisible to others.”
Lily snorted and just said, “Eavesdropper”
Nigel faintly said “observant” and started fidgeting with his finger. Lily looked up at the real crescent moon hanging above their heads. She had so much to think about, but her main concern was if she’d ever get the chance to hear him ask her out again. It seemed as if he’d given up a few weeks ago. Just then, as if he had read her mind, Nigel said in a low voice, “Would you say yes?”
“I don’t know. He may not even ask me anymore. He hasn’t in a while. I think he has given up”
Nigel told her that he highly doubted that and apologized for adding to her confusion.
“Oh please, it was the perfect distraction the wake up call I needed. Thank you for everything,” Lily said getting up and giving the boy a hug. She thought she heard a faint plop! But she ignored it. The clock struck twelve and Nigel said, “I hate to be the Cinderella, but I really have to go. I’ll see you around.”
Lily just nodded and watched as he walked away, but she quickly remembered a question. “Oi! You never told me how he was clever!”
Nigel just smirked and called back, “You’ll see.”
She smiled faintly and looked down to pull her mask off her face, but then something in the water glimmered and caught her eye. Bending down to pick the small, round object, everything suddenly made sense- Nigel and James’s weird behavior, Peter’s absence, Nigel’s knowledge, James’s cleverness.
Lily laughed to herself and the called to the retreating figure, “You dropped your ring…James.”
A/N: awe I love the ending to this story. Please leave a review and thank you for reading. Don’t forget to lemme know if you think there should be an epilogue and if you’d like just explain why so I know. Questions- Comments? Leave them in the square below. Thanks Again!
