Chapter 1: Head Girl
[Printer Friendly Version of This Chapter]

A/N: I wrote a lot of the story already, but it will probably be a while before I get to type more of it up. Homework sucks!

Hermione Granger squealed with delight as she finished reading her Hogwarts letter. She rushed down the stairs to inform her parents of the good news before she Apparated to the Burrow for the last week of her summer vacation.

“Mum!” she called, “Dad! I have the best news!”

“What is it darling?” her mother questioned when Hermione found her parents in the small kitchen.

“I was made Head Girl!” she said happily, her eyes portraying exactly how excited she was.

“Pumpkin, that’s wonderful,” Drew Granger responded, smiling at his daughter.

“Yes, it really is. We know how long you’ve wanted that position,” Emily Granger beamed.

It was true. Ever since Hermione had stared her magical education at Hogwarts, she had dreamed of becoming the Head Girl. Now, six years later, that dream was coming true.

“Thanks Mum, Daddy,” she said, still excited, “I’ve got to go now. The Weasleys are expecting me to be over there by noon, and I don’t want to be late.”

“Goodbye, sweetheart,” her father said, giving Hermione a huge bear hug, “watch out for those boys.”

Hermione rolled her eyes playfully, “I will, don’t worry.”

“Good luck, Hermione. Don’t forget to write and feed Crookshanks, and you know…”

“I’ll be fine Mum, I’ll see you in June,” she said hugging her petite mother.

Hermione ran back up the stairs, collected her belongings, and Disapparated to the Burrow with a loud *CRACK.*

Hermione knocked on the back door of the Burrow, with her enormous smile still plastered on her face. Ron Weasley answered the door and a confused expression crossed his face at the sight of Hermione’s huge grin.

“Is something going on?” he asked,, still looking confused.

“Yes! Where’s Harry? I want to tell both of you at the same time,” Hermione’s words were rushed as she stepped into the house, full of excitement and energy.

She followed Ron into the kitchen and saw Harry Potter sitting in the kitchen with Ginny Weasley, both of them looking rather uncomfortable.

“I thought I heard you,” Ginny said, standing up to embrace her friend. She had obviously noticed Hermione’s wildly excited expression, “What’s up Hermione?”

“Well…” she replied, “I opened my Hogwarts letter and this fell out!” Hermione held up a shiny gold badge with the words Head Girl engraved into it.

“Hermione that’s great. Not that it’s much of a surprise or anything,” Harry teased.

“Wow, Hermione. Congratulations!” Ron exclaimed, giving Hermione a quick hug.

Hermione stood flustered for a moment. “Er… thanks guys,” she stuttered.

Ron’s happy expression turned into a grimace. “Great,” he moaned, “Now Mum’s going to want to have a party.”

“Lighten up Ronald. Parties are fun,” Ginny scolded.

“Just the same, I don’t really need a party. Where is your mum? I wanted to know when we were going to Diagon Alley.”

“Not sure. Wait, here she comes,” Ginny said acknowledging the footsteps coming down the stairs.

“Hello, Hermione, dear. It’s very good to see you,” Mrs. Weasley said, smiling warmly before turning to Ron, “What’s this I hear about a party?”

“It’s nothing, Mum,” he answered, his ears turning red.

“You had better tell me Ronald, or I’ll have to start guessing some embarrassing things.”

“It’s nothing Mrs. Weasley. We were talking about how I was made Head Girl,” Hermione said, rescuing Ron.

“Now I understand. We’ll have a party for you on Sunday,” Mrs. Weasley said maternally.

“Oh, Mrs. Weasley, that’s really not necessary.”

“Nonsense, dear, I want to. Besides, you’re going to be seventh years. That’s certainly something to celebrate, now, isn’t it?” Mrs. Weasley reasoned.

The next day, the Weasleys, Hermione and Harry traveled to Diagon Alley to purchase their school supplies for the coming year. They went together to Flourish and Blott’s, but afterwards, Ginny needed Potions ingredients and the boys wanted to go to the Quidditch supply store.

“I’ll meet you later,” Hermione told them, “I need to get new robes.”

“Okay,” Harry agreed, “We’ll meet you a Fred and George’s in an hour.”

Hermione wandered off on her own and entered Madame Malkin’s robe shop. When she saw who was inside, it took almost all of her will power not to turn right around and leave again.

“Well, well. If it isn’t Little Miss Perfect,” the familiar cold voice drawled.

“Oh, shove it, Malfoy,” she said with a glare. She was sick and tired of his horrid behavior. This was supposed to be a good year, and she refused to take any of his badmouthing.

“Don’t we have a temper today, Granger?” he sneered, “You’re lucky we’re not in school. I could take points form you for talking back to the Head Boy like that.”

Hermione’s jaw dropped. This cannot be happening. “You can’t possibly be the other Head,” she said quietly,

“Oh, but I can, Granger, I can.”
