Chapter 1: Chapter 1
[Printer Friendly Version of This Chapter]

I pause outside the building looking up, and, for the second time in two days I wonder if I did the right thing. Shut up Regulus, of course you did the dark lord is the way that your parents always taught you, he’s the way that you were always meant to take and you are not going to screw this up your first solo mission is important. Right the plan you go in you infiltrate into the heart of the muggle-born rights group and then you kill the leader, it just seems so cold. What are you talking about? Of course it’s cold you’re a Black muggle-borns mean nothing to you. OK I’m going in.
I walk in and go up to the desk where a woman is sitting

“Hi,” I say, “I was wondering if I could talk to the leader of this fine organisation,”

“I’ll buzz you in, but I warn you she’s very busy we’re planning for a big demonstration on Monday,” That little bit of information would be going straight back to the dark lord.

“Thanks,” I say and she smiles I walk through to the office she indicated and see the most breathtakingly beautiful woman I’ve ever seen. She smiles at me gets up puts a wand to my throat and says in a voice as sweet as music “Prove you’re not a death-eater,” My eyes widen and I look into her eyes they’re startling green and shaped like cat’s eyes “Umm,” I say “How?”

“Well, what do all death-eaters have?”

“I wouldn’t know I’m not a death-eater”

“Roll up your left sleeve,”

I laugh if she thinks that she’ll find anything there, I might not be the brightest button in the box but I disillusioned that mark before I came in and as soon as she removes that wand from my throat she will take her last breath. I roll up my sleeve and she lowers her wand, the idiot but then again she’s a muggle born of course she’s thick. Then I’m on top of her my wand now at her throat then she does the most incredible thing she breathes out a long drawn-out breath and breathes

“Ah I thought so,”

“What?” I ask completely non-plussed if she knew what I was then why did she remove her wand, I look into her eyes they’re wide-open and staring right back at me and I know that I can’t end her life. I remove my wand and she smiles

“I also thought that,” She says smiling. I stare at her what is she doing I nearly kill her and then I don’t have the bottle and she is speaking like we’re chatting in a coffee shop. She opens the door for me
“I’m Cassandra, and you must be Regulus Black, goodbye.”

“What? You’re just going to let me go?”

“But how did you know?”
“I don’t suppose you ever credited us muggle-borns with much intelligence did you?”

I shake my head, smiling. I’m smiling? She knows I’m a death-eater and I’m smiling Then again I think if this girl was about to kill me I’d be smiling. Have you ever known anyone like that the sort of person who you meet and you know that given the chance you’d spend the rest of your life in his or her arms?

“Well despite what you may think we are not stupid and we knew that we were going to be getting a death-eater today,”

“So I guess you’re not having a demonstration on Monday either?”

“Well do you really think I’m going to tell you that?” I shrug

“Now you toddle off to your little dark lord tell him you killed me and we’ll say no more about it,”

So I left but I knew that I’d be coming back no way was that girl never coming into my life again.

I felt the mark burn and I went.

I heard the high cold voice say, “Mission accomplished?”

“Affirmative, My lord,” I lied praying that he wouldn’t use legilimency, of course I could stop him but it would be rather pointless he’d kill me anyway. But thankfully he didn’t and I knew it was because I was a Black. He then asked, “Regulus, I believe you have an elf,” It was a statement not a question so I kept quiet “I require an elf,”

“OK,” I said slowly “I guess you can have Kreach-,”

“Excellent, excellent, you may go,” So I went home and told Kreacher he was so excited but I felt slightly uneasy. Did I mention I was investigating the dark lord’s secret? No? Must have slipped my mind.
