Chapter 1: Ron and Hermione
[Printer Friendly Version of This Chapter]

“Ron?” Hermione approached Ron from behind, who was sitting at his desk and scribbling something on a piece of paper.

“Yes, Hermione?” he replied.

“I need to tell you something.”

“Just a second.”

“But it’s important!” Hermione urged. They were in their tiny house's living room where the windows let in enough light to brighten the room wtihout making it too white.

“I’m sure it is – I just need to finish writing this letter to Bill.”

“Can’t that wait?”

“It’s a very important letter.”

“Well, my news is also very important.” Hermione was beginning to get irritable.

“How important?” Ron asked.

“It’s life changing important.”

“Well, so is this letter.”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean, it’s important.”

“What’s it about?”

“It’s about the Quidditch World Cup.”

“That’s not important!” Hermione burst out. The last thing she needed was Quidditch of all things to interrupt this perfect family moment that she had planned.

“Of course it is!” Ron replied brashly.

“How so?”

“Bill can get us front row tickets.” Ron sounded so excited that it made Hermione almost feel nauseous.

“Ron, I swear. Anymore talk of Quidditch in this house and I’ll chuck you out the window.

“Relax, Hermione. I’m almost done," Ron said quickly scribbling some words onto the paper as fast as he could.

“Well, hurry.”

“Can’t your news just wait for a few minutes?”

“No, it can’t!”

“Is someone dying?” Ron asked, taking Hermione by surprise.

“Is someone sick?”

“Am I in grave danger?”

“Then it can wait.”

“I change my mind – you are in grave danger.”

“What kind of danger?”

“Being murdered by your wife.” Hermione reached for her pockets and took out her wand.

“I was just kidding Hermione – put the wand away.”

“Can you please just listen, Ron?” Hermione said, she was getting really tired of arguing.

“You’re not listening!

“I am!”

“Alright, well for the past year we’ve been married and we’ve sh- RON, YOU’RE NOT LISTENING!” Ron's nose was almost touching the piece of paper as he scribbled on it with his quill.

“I am! I am!”

“You’re writing!”

“And listening – I can do both at the same time," Ron sighed exasperatedly. He was getting annoyed too.

“Ron, stop it.”

“I need to finish this letter.” Did Hermione not understand that this was the QUIDDITCH WORLD CUP that was at stake?

“I’m about to say something very very important and I need you to listen!”

“I’m listening! Just say it!”

“Oh I hate you, Ronald Weasley," Hermione said finally with a bitter voice.

“You hate me? Is that what you wanted to say?”

“No! I hate you because you won’t listen to me!”

“For the last time, I AM LISTENING!” Ron yelled.

“Alright, I’m leaving. I give up. When you want to know, go figure it out yourself," Hermione said, brandishing her hands in the air and walking out the door.

“Hermione, come back!” Ron said as he got up too and followed her.

“Stop following me, Ron. I’m getting a headache; I’m going to lie down.”

“Alright, alright…I was being stupid – tell me.”

“I don’t feel like it," Hermione replied coldly.

“But I really do want to know.”

“Well, you can figure it out yourself now.”

“Piece it together – I’m sick, I’m getting tired easily, it’s something very important.”

“…you….you’ve got the flu?” Ron guessed, obviously with no idea.

“Are you that ignorant?”

“No, I’m just not very sure what you want to tell me.”

“Think about it, Ron!” Hermione urged him.

“Well, there are many things that could make you sick and tired that are very important.”

“What kind of things?”

“You’ve got the flu…um…”

“Is that all you can think of?” Hermione asked, rolling her eyes.

“Well, yeah," Ron said sheepishly.

“Ugh, you’re so thick!"

“Come on, just tell me!”

“WHY NOT?” Ron burst out.

Complete silence.

“Ron?” Hermione asked her pale husband.

“Ron? Are you alright?” she repeated.

“… A baby?” Ron said after a while, his voice weak and faint.

“Oh…wow…um…a…b-baby?” he asked again, making sure this wasn't some stupid joke.

“Are you happy?”

“Well- well yeah of course! I…I’m…just shocked.” He said, putting on a sheepish grin.

“Good shocked or bad shocked?”

“Good…I think.”

“I’m so glad to hear this!” Hermione cried, throwing herself into Ron's arms.

“I’m glad…I’m glad too," he said, hugging her back.

“Oh I’m so excited now!”

“So…wait…does that mean I’m going to be a father?”

“Yes, it does!”

“And…and you’re going to be a mother?”

“We’re going to be parents?”

“Yes! Ron! Yes! Are you sure you’re alright?” Ron looked a little flustered.

“Um…yeah…I’m just…I’m just going to go back to writing.”

“Okay…” Hermione said awkwardly. It was best to leave him to his own thoughts.

“Hey Hermione…” Ron said, turning around.

“Yes, Ron?”

“Can I name the baby?”

Hermione smiled. "Sure."
