Disclaimer: I do not own Harry Potter. I do own the plot to this story though! *Dances* Oh, and the lyrics are from the song I Loved Her First by Heartland.

Author Note: Hey, everyone! This is my first ever Harry/Ginny story. It may not include much romance on their part, but it’s still a Harry/Ginny fic! Well, read on! …. Oh, I forgot to tell you! Flashbacks are in bold. Now you may read on!

Arthur Weasley sighed deeply as he looked upon the dancing couple before him; Harry Potter and his one and only daughter Ginny Weas-Potter. Ginny Potter. It was the young couple’s wedding night and, yes, Arthur Weasley was happy for them—ecstatic even—but he couldn’t help but feel a slight sense of loss dwelling in the pit of his stomach.

Look at the two of you dancing that way
Lost in the moment and each others face
So much in love your alone in this place
Like there's nobody else in the world

It was obvious that Harry and Ginny loved each other; you could just tell by the look on the couple’s faces, smiling happily as they danced together. Arthur knew he wanted his daughter to be happy, and he knew that Harry was the right man to do just that, but why then was it so hard just to give Ginny to Harry?

Maybe it was because she was Arthur’s first daughter, or because she still looked so young. Or maybe it was because he believed that Ginny would stay his little girl forever…

I was enough for her not long ago
I was her number one
She told me so
And she still means the world to me
Just so you know

“Dad! Daddy! Look, I caught something!” six year old Ginny Weasley squealed, holding onto her fishing rod tightly as it bent over the slow moving river below it.

Arthur’s freckled and only slightly wrinkled face broke into a grin as he scrambled over the rocks, hurrying along the river’s edge to reach his youngest child. Maybe one of his crazy Muggle-style vacations would finally pay off.

Putting his hands over her’s, Arthur directed Ginny’s small fingers to the fishing real. “Just turn this, Hun,” he said, feeling her hands begin to pull the reel towards her and back around again.

Ginny did surprisingly well, considering that she was reeling in her first fish. Sooner than expected, the fish broke the water, dangling from the fishing line and flopping about as Ginny laughed, her brown eyes sparkling.

Arthur smiled at his daughter’s excitement at seeing the abnormally small fish. It must have been about two inches long, though Ginny didn’t seem to care. “He’s so cute! I’m going to name him…Caleb,” she announced, smiling at the fish as she poked it.

Arthur chuckled slightly. “Alright, Gin. Now we just need to get him off the hook and-”

“-put him back into the water?” Ginny finished, looking up at her father from her crouched position on the ground.

“What?” Arthur asked, taken aback.

“Aren’t we going to put Caleb back in the water?” she asked. “I mean, he has a family, too, doesn’t he?”

Arthur stared at Ginny, wondering how on earth a guy like him got blessed with such a kind-hearted daughter. “Sure, Gin. I think Caleb would like that.”

Ginny smiled as Arthur pulled the fishing hook from the fish’s lip and let it swim away back into the river’s current.

“Good,” Ginny said as she watched the fish swim. “I don’t know about the fish, but I don’t know what I would do without you, Dad.”

Arthur grinned widely at Ginny. “And I don’t know what I would do without you either, Gin.”

So be careful when you hold my girl
Time changes everything
Life must go on
And I'm not gonna stand in your way

Arthur smiled at the memory. Oh, how he missed the days when he was her number one, when she thought boys were gross, when her father was the only man she’d ever need. But times have changed and so has Ginny.

She didn’t stay sweet and caring all through her life like she did when she was six. No, Ginny Weasley developed into a headstrong young woman by the time she reached age ten. Arthur could only guess that it had something to do with growing up with six older brothers, but Ginny just wouldn’t fall for anything, not even a prank or a trick. She’d never admit it if she was wrong or if she was hurt, sad, or weakened in any way. “I’m fine,” she’d say whenever she tripped. “It’s just a scrape.”

But when you’ve lived with Ginny for all of her life, you begin to recognize her lying habits. She’d bite her lip, blush, duck her head, and sometimes even raise her voice a tad bit higher if she was lying and these symptoms all seemed to come into effect after Arthur’s little girl had met Harry Potter….

But I loved her first and I held her first
And a place in my heart will always be hers
From the first breath she breathed
When she first smiled at me
I knew the love of a father runs deep
And I prayed that she'd find you someday
But it still hard to give her away
I loved her first

“Arthur! How was work today?” Molly Weasley asked as her husband walked heavily into the kitchen and dropped himself into a chair. Ginny, who was now ten years old, looked up from her dinner from the other side of the table and smiled.

“Exhausting,” Arthur replied, pulling his glasses from his face and rubbing his eyes. “Eight raids today. You’d think the old Biting Toilet Seat trick would get old after a while, wouldn’t you?”

Molly gave Arthur an apologetic smile as she set his dinner plate in front of him. He took a couple of bites of the steaming carrots before he remembered that the date was September first.

“Did you lot get onto the Hogwarts Express well enough?” Arthur asked, glancing at Ginny before looking back to his wife.

“Oh, yes,” Molly said, turning from the sink, “we did fine. And that reminds me. Guess who we saw at Platform Nine and Three Quarters?”

Arthur shrugged, thinking it was probably one of their old school mates. “Who?”

“Harry Potter!”

Clink clank clack

Ginny, now growing rather red at the cheeks as her parents both eyed her strange behavior suspiciously, mumbled, “Sorry, dropped my fork.”

How could that beautiful women with you
Be the same freckle face kid that I knew
The one that I read all those fairy tales to

Arthur laughed a little as Ginny leaned up to whisper something in Harry’s ear, who laughed. He wondered how he could have been so stupid as to not pick up the signs. Every time someone said Harry’s name, Ginny would blush furiously and become abnormally quiet or even drop what she was holding. It was extremely obvious that the ten-year-old girl was developing a small crush on the boy .

Maybe it was because he always thought that Ginny would just have boys as friends instead of boyfriends, but Arthur was beyond surprised when he had received an owl six years later saying that she was dating Harry Potter. His daughter dating Harry Potter? Sure, he was a nice enough guy, but dating? Hadn’t he and Ginny just joked around, talked a little, acted like brother and sister towards each other? It took a while, but sure enough during the months that Harry and Ginny were dating Arthur got used to the fact that his daughter could attract young men and even date them. But the shock of realizing that Ginny was dating was nothing compared to what he felt when he realized that his daughter had gone the next step up….

And tucked into bed all those nights
And I knew the first time I saw you with her
It was only a matter of time

“Mr. Weasley? I…err…I was wondering if we could talk? Possibly in private?” twenty-year-old Harry asked Arthur on a fine summer’s evening.

Arthur put the battery he was studying down on the kitchen table. “Sure, Harry. We’ll just go out to the yard, shall we?”

Harry nodded, fidgeting his hands together as he followed Arthur out the back door and out to the garden where they stood facing each other.

“Well…I…. You know I-I’m dating Ginny,” Harry said, staring at a gnome as it poked it’s ugly head out from a nearby rose bush.

“Yes,” said Arthur, eyeing Harry suspiciously. He had never seen him act so nervous….

“Erm…well…I-I love her, Mr. Weasley,” Harry stuttered, raising his arm to scratch the back of his neck.

Arthur raised his eyebrows. “Oh?” he said, wondering why on earth Harry would tell him such a thing. Maybe Harry was going to…nah, he couldn’t be.

“Yeah, and…you see…I just wanted to ask you if it would be alright if…if I asked her to marry me?” Harry asked, glancing to Arthur just in time to see his eyes roll back in his head and faint.

But I loved her first and I held her first
And a place in my heart will always be hers
From the first breath she breathed
When she first smiled at me
I knew the love of a father runs deep
And I prayed that she'd find you someday
But its still hard to give her away
I loved her first

Arthur bit his lip to contain a sharp urge to laugh at the memory. He had been awaken about a few hours later to Harry trying to explain that he didn’t know why Arthur had fainted. Harry had thought it had something to do with the heat…but, oh how wrong he was.

It was because his daughter was growing up. And Arthur knew that he would no longer be her number one, but maybe her number two. He wouldn’t be her first choice, instead maybe her second. He might not even be the man that she would come crying to anymore, but he would always—always—be the one who loved her first.

From the first breath she breathed
When she first smiled at me
I knew the love of a father runs deep
Someday you might know what I'm going through
When a miracle smiles up at you
I loved her first
