Chapter 1: Prologue: Sibling Rivalry

My Brother the Hero

Prologue: Sibling Rivalry

My name is Victoria Malfoy and I’m 11 years old, I’m 5’4” and I have brown curly hair and violet eyes. I am so excited because this is the year that my brother D.J. and I get to start at Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry. In case you didn’t know my brother D.J. (which stands for Draco Jr.) and I are twins; our parents are Hermione Granger-Malfoy and Draco Malfoy, although I’ve been told that D.J. isn’t really daddy’s son, that he’s the son of mum and uncle Harry but I don’t know how that would be possible because I know that mum hasn’t been with anyone other than daddy. I’ll have to ask her about it sometime, I’d ask her now but she’d just say that I’m too young, so I’ll wait until I do really really well at Hogwarts and then ask her during Christmas break.

My brother and I are half fairies and half elves just like our mum, dad, uncle Harry, aunt Ginny, uncle Blaise, and aunt Padma. We grew up here in the Fairy Glades but now that we’re going to be in the Wizarding World, daddy is teaching us how to blend in and look like a normal witch and wizard because there are still fights between Wizard kind and Fairies and Elves. Mum was telling us that it’s because fairies and elves are far more powerful that wizards and they resent us for that fact. It’s not our fault that they’re not as powerful as us, why should we have to suffer but I guess that there really isn’t anything we can do about it.

Today we went to Diagon Alley to buy our school stuff and mum ran into a bunch of people she knew from school so it took twice as long as a normal shopping trip, I was annoyed but mum bought us ice cream from Florean’s so I didn’t mind so much anymore. We went to Ollivander’s wand shop after lunch, which was my favorite part even though D.J. got to go first; he’s older but only by 3 minutes.

I couldn’t help it I pouted, he always gets to go first and everyone treats him like he’s something special but he’s not! He’s not even as smart as me, I memorized every single one of mum’s old school books, not to mention I got 100% on every single one of daddy’s quizzes and exams that he gave us to prepare for Hogwarts and D.J. didn’t even bother to do the work and his did badly on the exams but daddy let him continue anyway; how unfair is that! Anyway back to what I was saying about Ollivander’s, D.J. took forever to get his wand and when he did Old Mr. Ollivander about had a grindalow when he realized that the core of this wand was from the same Phoenix that gave feathers to the cores’ of uncle Harry’s wand and the late Lord Voldemort’s wand. I guess it’s supposed to mean that he’s destined for greatness or some sort of nonsense like that. Now my wand on the other hand, Mr. Ollivander said that it’s the most powerful wand in his shop and that it was crafted with the exact same ingredients, as Rowena Ravenclaw’s wand and that the only difference was that Godric Gryffindor’s grandson who was the best wand-maker ever crafted this wand. Mum was really proud of me then and took me right out to buy me a present…a brand new racing broom! But I can’t bring it to Hogwarts until next year, which is a major bummer but I can deal with it.

Daddy was so happy for me when I told him the story of my wand and he gave me a big hug and told me that no matter how great I become I’ll always be his little girl. I couldn’t help but beam, I know I’m daddy’s favorite even though I have 2 other sisters and then D.J. Daddy always told me that I was his miracle child, that without me he never would have married mum; I don’t know how true that is, I heard the Elders of the village talking one day and they said that D.J. was the miracle child, that he fulfilled some dumb prophecy so that mum and daddy could get married. It always happens, I start to feel special and then D.J. overshadows me and I get pushed into the background. I hate him sometimes and I wish he’d never been born! Then I’d be the special one, the one everyone loves.

Chapter 2: Our First Day at Hogwarts

Chapter 1: Our First Day at Hogwarts

It’s finally September 1st, I can’t believe that after all the stories I’ve heard from mum and daddy that I’m finally going to see it! Mum said that we have to be at Kings Cross Station in London by 10:30 because it takes a while to board the train and besides, Rachael and James are going to Hogwarts this year too so that means that Uncle Harry, Aunt Ginny, Uncle Blaise, and Aunt Padma are coming with along with James’ four brothers and sisters.

I hope the muggles don’t notice with all the people that we have to get through the barrier today; I would hate to be expelled from school before I even got there. D.J doesn’t care what happens as long as he gets to hang out with James. I wonder what house I’m going to get in, mum said that she was almost put in Ravenclaw but that in the end she was put in Gryffindor and that the Sorting Hat had barely touched daddy’s head before it said Slytherin.

I don’t know which one I want to get into as long as it’s not Hufflepuff, I heard some people in the village talking and they said that Hufflepuff is the worst house for a Fairy to be in because its an insult to our magical abilities. Oh, mum is calling; it’s time to go now.

Later On the Hogwarts Express:

D.J., James, Rachael, and I have gotten a compartment all to ourselves; everyone seems to know about our parents and how they defeated Voldemort. It’s really quite annoying but I guess on the bright side it tells everyone not to mess with us. Rachael and I can’t wait to get there and see what houses we’re going to be put in because both of us are from parents that are from conflicting houses. I know that James is going to be put in Gryffindor because everyone from Aunt Ginny’s family and Uncle Harry’s family were in Gryffindor and I bet that D.J. will be in Gryffindor too because he’s always with James; it’s scary, sometimes it’s like they could be brothers.

I suppose I’ll be in Gryffindor too because everyone’s always telling me about how I’m just like mum but I guess I could be in Ravenclaw too. Anyway James and D.J. are playing Exploding Snap but they won’t let us play too; they won’t say so but I know it’s because we’re girls. Boys are so dumb sometimes! I was reading a book but that was before James ruined it by setting it on fire with his wand. I know how to fix it but I know that he’ll just do it again so I’ve decided to walk around the train a little bit; maybe I’ll find someone interesting to talk to.

We’ve just gotten into Hogsmeade Station; blimey the rest of my ride was interesting. So after James had set my book on fire I left to find some more interesting people to talk to, maybe someone that wasn’t so immature. Near the other end of the train I found a group of people that invited me to sit with them. When they wanted to know my surname (I’m assuming they’re from the Purebloods Only crowd) I didn’t tell them, I only said that my name was Tori and that I was indeed a pureblood (even though I’m not).

They accepted me and we talked about the houses and which ones were better and though most of them were going to be in Slytherin for sure, I’ve decided that I would be happy with either Slytherin or Ravenclaw. I don’t want to have to compete with my brother in the same house! Everyone already thinks he’s perfect and that he can do no wrong but they’ll see; I’ll show them that he’s really nothing special. Right now we’re crossing the lake with Professor Hagrid, he’s the Care of Magical Creatures teacher although we won’t get to take that class until our third year…OH MERLIN…Hogwarts is absolutely beautiful!

We’ve just pulled ashore and are following a teacher called Professor McGonagall lead us to this room just to the right of some really big doors where I could hear the rest of the school. I just can’t wait to be sorted!

There were loads of other first years before me, it seemed to take forever and then they got to DJ; of course the sorting hat barely touched his head before yelling out Gryffindor. I couldn’t help it, I rolled my eyes as DJ took his place at the Gryffindor table and then it was my turn.

I walked up to the stool with a confidence that I didn’t feel and sat gingerly, praying that I wasn’t put into Gryffindor; Professor McGonagall placed the hat on my head and all I could think was NOT GRYFFINDOR.

Not Gryffindor eh? Now that’s a strange request. Never have I had a student specifically ask not to be in the same house as their sibling; in fact…it’s usually quite the reverse. But if you’re sure…better be…SLYTHERIN!

I jumped down off the stool and grinned as I walked towards the Slytherin table; me a Slytherin! I squealed a little as I sat down, wouldn’t daddy be proud of me! Malfoys’ have been in Slytherin for generations and Slytherin will help me achieve a greatness that DJ could never dream of. I went to bed that night in my new green and silver dorm, dreaming of finally getting the attention and admiration that I deserve.

Chapter 2: The Potions Master

I woke bright and early the next morning, eager to start my Wizarding education.  I bound out of bed, showered, and skipped to the Great Hall for breakfast; I was so early that only a few of the upperclassmen were at the Slytherin table.  They were talking about Quidditch tryouts and grumbling about how Slytherin hadn’t won the Quidditch cup since before Uncle Harry had gone to school here.  This year would be different they said, no way was Gryffindor going to beat us in the Quidditch and the House cup for the eighteenth year running.  As they raged on the beginnings of a plan formed in my head, I’d have to see the Quidditch Captain, Justin Flint later.  I didn’t have a lot of time to dwell Quidditch though as more and more students trickled in and the Heads of Houses started handing out this term’s schedules.  As Professor Snape handed a schedule to me he grinned in a manic way,

“Glad to see that at least one Malfoy got into Slytherin, your father will be proud.”

He looked me over once more and moved on to the girl next to me, I think she said her name was Georgina Black.  It was my understanding that the Blacks had died out but apparently they hadn’t.

I didn’t really take a good look at my schedule until a few minutes later and I groaned as my eyes fell on Double Potions, 8am, Slytherin and Gryffindor.  My very first class and it was going to be with my brother and idiot cousin; my head hit the table with a resounding thud.  Georgie patted my back and glared at the Gryffindor table before turning back to her breakfast; it wasn’t long before my curiosity over the rest of my schedule won out and I lifted my head to take another look.  The rest wasn’t so bad, 10am Transfiguration, 11am History of Magic, 1pm Defense Against the Dark Arts with Ravenclaw, 2pm Double Charms, and 4pm Herbology with the Hufflepuffs.   Not too bad for my first day, I glanced at the rest of the week and saw that it was pretty much the same.

Georgie and I left the Great Hall a few minutes later and crossed the Entrance Hall to the door that would lead to the dungeons and my untimely demise.  We got into the Slytherin queue and waited for Professor Snape to open the door to the classroom.  A few minutes later James and DJ came strolling down the hallway followed by about 6 girls who were fawning all over them.  It was sickening!  They spotted me and the grins faded off their faces.

“How could you do this Tori?”

James exclaimed,

“You’ve embarrassed us by being put into Slytherin!  Even Rachael wasn’t stupid enough to let the sorting hat put her in Slytherin!  We’re not related anymore!”

I felt the anger boil up inside me as I took a step towards him, my fists out, fire in my eyes; if Georgie hadn’t been there to hold me back I woulda decked him.  Just then Professor Snape appeared and ushered us into the classroom; tears threatened to spill down my face as I took my seat as far away from my brother and cousin as I could.  I didn’t listen really to anything Professor Snape said during that first lesson, the fury coursing through me and I decided that I would get even with James for saying such hateful things to me.

It wasn’t until later in the week that just such an opportunity presented itself and I wasted no time in getting back at my stuck up cousin; I was walking down the hall on my way to charms when Justin Flint approached me.

“Yo, Malfoy!  Hold up.”

I stopped and turned as he called out to me,

“Yeah Flint?”

Once he got to me, he dropped his arm across my shoulders and we started walking down the hall together.

“Georgie said that you could use my help in getting even with some Gryffindor slime.”
He grinned at me as I nodded and handed me a piece of parchment before turning and jogging in the other direction, I put it in my book bag and walked into charms as the bell rang; I didn’t get a chance to look at it until later that night when I started my homework and realized that it was still in my bag.  I took it out and grinned.

Notice:  Calling all Slytherins!  Quidditch Tryouts are

Saturday morning at 10am.  DON’T BE LATE!

Chapter 3: Quidditch Tryouts

Saturday morning came quickly; I couldn’t believe that I’d been here a week already.  I love being at Hogwarts!  I haven’t spoken to my brother or James since Monday but according to Rachael, Griffindor is going to have their Quidditch tryouts tomorrow, I’m going to go and watch just so that I can laugh at what idiots they’re going to make of themselves.  Anyway I couldn’t wait until tryouts today, I just knew that I would dominate although I’m not sure what I want to try out for; Daddy was a seeker, maybe that’s what I should be.  I decided that I needed some breakfast and made my way up to the Great Hall, maybe I should talk to Flint about what I should tryout for.

I walked into the Great Hall and dropped down in the chair next to Georgie, neither of us spoke as I piled food on my plate; I ate quickly while my eyes scanned the Great Hall, I didn’t want to be caught off guard by my brother but I was also watching for Flint to come in so that we could talk strategy before we had to go down to the Quidditch Stadium.  I didn’t have to wait long until I saw either of my queries as Flint and my brother walked through the Great Hall door at almost the exact same time; they glared at each other and stalked off to their respective tables.  As soon as Justin sat down, he grinned at me as he looked me up and down, a part of me thought it was just to figure out where I would fit in on their team and another part of me thought it was an excuse to look at my body because I know I have a good one, it’s the fairy blood in me.  Anyway when he was done he said,

“I think you have just the build”

he winked at me,

“for a seeker and if you’re good I’ll put you on the team in a second.  I don’t want Gryffindor to win again!”

He looked angrily over where James and DJ were sitting before stabbing his fork into his breakfast and savagely shoving it into his mouth.

No more than two hours later I was pacing the Quidditch field with Georgie, nervously waiting my turn to tryout.  I hadn’t told any of my family that I was trying out for the team and so none of them had shown up but it took a little bit of the pressure off.  If this didn’t work out though my plans to get back at my brother would have to be sent back to the drawing board.  The Captains from the other houses had all shown up to watch the process, this way they could go back to their teams with a strategy on how to beat us; what they didn’t know though was that I had some tricks up my sleeve after watching Uncle Harry practice and teach James.  As I paced the field I watched the others, I watched the things that Flint nodded his head to and I watched the things he grimaced at, I took mental notes and fashioned a plan to win that seeker spot.

Finally it was my turn, I jumped on my broom and took off into the air with incredible speed and grace and as I circled around I saw Flint nod in approval and wink at me; he sounded the whistle and the returning team members hit me with all they had.  I dodged bludgers with ease, I wove in and out of the other players, and I caught the snitch in five minutes flat after a spectacular dive that I pulled out of inches from the ground.  I landed on the ground and leaned against my broom looking smug, twirling the snitch in my hand as Flint called the end of the seeker tryouts and announced that I would be the new SLYTHERIN SEEKER!  Georgie and I jumped up and down and screamed before I rushed off to the Owlrey to write Mum and Dad a letter telling them the good news.

The next day I woke up smirking, my plan was finally taking shape, I bound into the bathroom to take a long bubble bath before heading down to breakfast.  The Gryffindor tryouts were this afternoon so I had some time to double-check my weekend homework and as well as Georgie’s.  After breakfast Georgie and I sat down in the Slytherin common room, she still had some homework to finish so I took the time to sit on the couch and start the new book that Mum bought me in Diagon Alley called Ancient Runes for Dummies: A Beginner’s Guide to Ancient Runes.  I know I won’t get to take Ancient Runes until third year but they’re so fascinating that I just couldn’t resist buying it and Mum was so proud when I asked her if I could have it.  It wasn’t long before I was so involved in the book that I didn’t notice Justin sit down beside me and it wasn’t until he dropped his arm over my shoulder that I looked up and smiled.

“You have beautiful eyes kid.”

He said with a smirk, I could feel myself blush a little and I grinned as he pulled me closer to him.  I snuggled up against him and went back to my book as he dragged his fingers through my curls and read over my shoulder.

It wasn’t long before afternoon came and it was time to go watch the Gryffindor Quidditch tryouts, the whole Slytherin team went to jeer at this years contenders, Justin leading the way and me and Georgie bringing up the rear.

“What was going on between you and Flint in the common room earlier?”

Georgie asked me quietly, I grinned at her and said,

“Well…he said he thought I had beautiful eyes.”

She stopped dead in her tracks and looked at me with her mouth hanging open,

she sighed,

“That’s amazing because some of the upper-class girls were telling me that he’s never dated anyone here!”

I didn’t say anything but started walking, my brain reeling over what my best friend had just told me.  We reached the stands where the other Slytherin players were sitting and we were just about to sit down on the other side of Parker Bullstrode when Justin motioned for us to come and sit down by him.  As we made our way down to where he was sitting I noticed DJ and James scowling up at me and I couldn’t help but smirk at them when Justin’s hand snaked around my waist before pulling me down beside him.  My brother’s eyes bugged out of his head and James’s mouth dropped as this happened only making the malicious glint in my eye shine more.  Without even knowing it they were giving me more and more ideas on how to make their lives here miserable.

The tryouts started on time and took forever to complete; none of the people trying out were spectacular but there were plenty of people who were decent, I had to give them that much but in the end they added three new people.  James was made a chaser (Aunt Ginny will be so proud, that was her position during her time here), DJ was made seeker (excellent! It’s the perfect opportunity for me to make him look like a fool), and some third year was made a beater.  Separately they were all ok players however Jacob Wood could turn them into a spectacular team if he played his cards right; I knew something he didn’t though, Professor Snape had booked the Quidditch Pitch for the Slytherin team every night from now until the end of October.  The Gryffindor team would only be able to practice on the weekends from now until Halloween which would give us a huge edge over them as well as Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff.

After the tryouts were over I leaned over and whispered to Georgie that I was going to walk back to the common room with Justin and nodded slightly in DJ and James’s direction; she grinned and nodded before running to catch up with a group of second year Slytherin girls who had been hanging around by the lake.  I turned back and looked up at Justin, my heart thudded gently in my chest as his arm slid around my waist and gripped my hip gently.  We walked slowly back towards the castle and I smirked when I heard voices which signaled to us that the Gryffindor Quidditch team was coming up behind us; as we came into their line of sight I could hear one of them say,

“Hey DJ isn’t that your sister up there with Flint?”
I couldn’t see him but I knew by the silence that he was furious, probably even grinding his teeth as he bit back a venomous response.  It was all I could do not to laugh although I almost gasped as Justin’s hand drifted slightly down and away from my hip; he gave a light squeeze before shifting his hand back up to my hip.  I smiled at him as DJ said through clenched teeth,

“That.  Is.  No.  Sister.  Of.  Mine!”

As his words penetrated my mind the smile fell off my face as one lone tear drifted down my cheek.  I felt Justin’s finger wipe it away, as he steered me off the main path and stopped in a quiet little spot near the front doors of the castle.  He took my chin in the palm of his hand, anger flashed through his eyes as he said,

“You don’t need that scumbag, you have Georgie and Rachael and…you have me.”

He pecked me on the nose before he took my hand and lead me the rest of the way down to the Slytherin common room where I spent the rest of the afternoon crying in his lap while he stroked my hair and told me everything would be all right.

Chapter 4: Slytherin vs. Ravenclaw

The first Quidditch match of the season was coming up just after Halloween, and I was excited to try out some of the moves we had been working on during practice on the Ravenclaw seeker.  It had been a long but short month and a half since quidditch tryouts and what I mean is, the days flew by, classes were a breeze and the homework that the Professors were giving out wasn’t hard but the nights were long, most nights I spent sitting by the fire in the Slytherin common room reading a book or thinking but not sleeping.

My brother and I still weren’t speaking although Rachael had owled Mum and Dad and told them what happened.  I never wanted to speak to that pigheaded son-of-Merlin again.  He could be swallowed up by the giant squid and I wouldn’t care but my anger at my twin was keeping me up at night, it seemed like the only time when my stomach wasn’t churning with anger and my brain wasn’t fogged from lack of sleep was when I was with Justin and Georgie, they made my days bearable and my nights shorter.

As the days went on, I threw myself into school and Quidditch hoping that it would wear me out to the point where I could sleep and before I knew it, it was the night before the opening match of the season against Ravenclaw.  Professor Snape had written notes for everyone on the team so that we could skip lessons to work out the last few kinks in our strategy.  We had watched the Ravenclaw team at every one of their practices and Flint was sure that we had their style down to a “T”.

We trained non-stop from breakfast until lunch when we took a short break and then after lunch we would be going over the diagrams in the changing room until dinner.  After dinner I did my homework for the classes that I had missed, and for the first time in over a month I actually felt tired; I bade everyone good night and went up to bed.

The morning of the match dawned cool and bright, I grinned as I jumped out of bed, it was the first time I’d smiled in a long time but I knew that today would be a good day.  I took my time in the shower and as the water cascaded over my head and down my face, all I could think about was the match.  I got out and dried off quickly before I went to wake up Georgie, who wasn’t very happy at first but once she remembered what day it was she cheered up a bit.  We made our way down through the common room and to the Great Hall for breakfast but we kept getting stopped by Slytherins wishing me luck so breakfast had already started by the time we got there.

I didn’t eat much, I was too nervous and before long I escaped to the quiet of the grounds.  The match wasn’t supposed to start for another hour but I didn’t care, I found a rock and sat down.  I had been trying to suppress my rage at DJ since tryouts but today I let it wash over me, anger made me feel powerful; it gave me the adrenaline I needed to win today.  I sat on that rock for a while, I guess you could say that I was meditating, channeling my rage, my energy into Quidditch and I didn’t move until I heard the voices of the other students making their way out to the Quidditch Pitch.  I got up and rushed to the changing room to meet the rest of the team where Justin gave us his usual speech before we left for the first game of the season.

Once in the middle of the Quidditch Pitch, we stood in a semicircle, brooms mounted, Madam Hooch in the center with the Ravenclaw team on the other side.  She beckoned Flint and the Ravenclaw Captain, Walter Davies forward to shake hands, and then she blew her whistle and released the Snitch!  My first ever Quidditch game started; I flew away from the group searching for the Snitch, my plan was to stay out of everyone’s way until I saw it.

I watched the Ravenclaw Seeker flying around frantically, trying to spot the snitch when an idea popped into my head and I started diving towards the ground as fast as I could.  Just as I knew he would Phil Chambers started diving after me until just inches before the ground I pulled up but Chambers didn’t and he went crashing into the ground.  Madam Hooch called a time out while she and Madam Pomfrey checked him over; I touched down to the ground and ran over to where the rest of the team was waiting for me.

Justin smirked at me, Jackie Montague (who was probably the smallest person on the team) grinned at me and then turned to look for her boyfriend in the stands, Luis Crabbe and Jake Goyle (who were more like flying rocks than anything) just stared stupidly around, they were probably wondering why the game had stopped.  The Harper twins, Josephine and Laurence were the other two Chasers and they were of average intelligence and skill so I guess overall we made a pretty good team.

Madam Pomfrey decided to pull Chambers out of the game and Ravenclaw didn’t have a replacement Seeker so we knew right there and then we were going to win this game.  Madam Hooch called everyone over to the center of the pitch and the match resumed; I kicked off hard from the ground as I listened to what the commentator, a fifth year Hufflepuff had to say.

“In a spectacular demonstration of the Wronski Feint by the new Slytherin Seeker the Ravenclaw Seeker has been removed from the game.  I dare say Slytherin will win this one hands down.”

The cheers from the Slytherin bleachers were tremendous as I sped around the pitch looking for the one little ball that would win us the game.  All of a sudden there it was!  The Snitch was fluttering right by the Ravenclaw beater’s shoulder and as I flattened myself against my broom I knew it was only a matter of seconds before the match was over.

We beat Ravenclaw 200 to 20 and returned to the common room to Butterbeer, Caldron Cakes, and Weasley’s Wildfire Whiz-bangs.

Chapter 5:  Mum’s Surprise

I woke up the next morning bright and early, still feeling the high of winning my first Quidditch match ever.  I jumped out of bed, showered and made my way down through the common room and out into the hallway before I ran into anyone.

“I can’t believe my baby girl is a Quidditch star now.”

I whipped around,

“Mum!  What are you doing here?”

I ran to her and practically jumped into her arms,

“You saw the match?”

“Of course love, I wouldn’t have missed it for all the Chocolate Frogs in the England.  Your father and Uncle Harry would be so proud of you, but they couldn’t make it.  There’s some important people coming to your Uncle’s court this weekend and they’re preparing the castle and your father had to see about the Malfoy affairs as Grandmum Malfoy is getting older now and she’s having the Lawyers over for tea this afternoon.  He wanted to be here but he couldn’t, he sends his love and a hug for his little Quidditch Master.”

She put her arm around my waist and we started walking towards the Great Hall for breakfast, once we sat down the real reason for her visit became apparent.

“So why don’t you tell me what’s going on with your brother.”

Once I explained what happened we left the Great Hall and took a walk around the lake.

“You can’t let your brother get to you love.  If he’s anything like your Uncles he won’t like any boy you’re interested in.”

She frowned a little bit, a thoughtful look in her eyes.  I’d always loved the way my mum looked, she looked like a Queen; she was elegant, poised, polite, fair, and she was brilliant.  I wanted to be just like her but I’d never be queen.  I was born second; the kingdom was going to be my brother’s.  Just the thought of him being King made me boil over with anger, it just wasn’t fair!  I was the smarter one; I have the ambition, not him!  Not DJ!

I kept my anger to myself and we just sat there in silence for a bit; it was one of the things that my mum and I had in common and thinking back, everyone always told me that I was just like her but I always felt like I was a bit of a daddy’s girl.  I was pulled out of my thoughts when mum spoke again,

“I have to admit darling that when I found out you had been sorted into Slytherin that I was a bit surprised, we’re so alike that I thought for sure that you’d be sorted into Gryffindor.  Not that Slytherin is a bad house, your father was in Slytherin and I love him just the same, if not more.”

I nodded thoughtfully and decided she may as well know the truth,

“Mum, I didn’t want to compete with DJ and James, so I asked the Sorting Hat not to put me in Gryffindor.”

She looked a little surprised but I could see understanding in her eyes, she hugged me and then left to go find DJ.

I sat at the edge of the lake for less than a minute before I could sense someone behind me; I waited for the person to speak,

“Was that your mum?”

I turned at the sound of his voice and smiled,

“Yeah, that’s my mum.”

He grinned and sat down beside me,

“You look just like her.”

I scooted closer to him and his arm slid around my waist,

I whispered before I lay my head down on his shoulder.  I wasn’t sure at that moment what Justin was to me, was he just a friend?  Was he my boyfriend?  Was he a fling to make my brother angry?  I knew that eventually I’d figure it out but right here, right now, it didn’t really matter.  All that mattered was that he was here with me and as we sat there in silence neither of us was aware that a woman of thirty stood in the doorway to the castle watching her daughter and the young man she suspected had fallen in love with her charming little girl.

The next two and a half months went by quickly in the castle, between classes and Quidditch I didn’t have a spare minute to think about home.  Gryffindor had played Hufflepuff and won 160-80 and then Ravenclaw had clobbered Hufflepuff three weeks later and even though they still needed to play us, Hufflepuff had been eliminated.  Christmas was fast approaching in the castle and even though I didn’t want to put up with my brother or James I knew mum would be disappointed if I didn’t come home, so I packed my trunk.

“Georgie, I wish you could come home with me but mum said she didn’t want any visitors this year.”

The truth was that mum wasn’t sure yet how she was going to handle visits from our friends and wanted to try a few different things before we invited people home.  Georgie nodded from across the room, she didn’t reply but a minute later a gift-wrapped box came flying at my head.  I ducked,

“GEORGIE!  That almost hit me.”

I tackled her to the ground and we both started laughing.

“You didn’t have to get me anything you know.”

“I know,” She said “But you’re my best friend and I wanted to get you a gift.”

I nodded thoughtfully before I reached into my nightstand and withdrew a package for her.  It was a small pendant that mum and I blessed with a Fairy Knowledge spell.

“Oh Tori.  It’s awesome!”

She rushed over and hugged me before putting it on,

“Where’d you get it?  What do these symbols mean?”

“I’m not sure.” I lied, “I saw it in a store and I thought of you.”

She nodded and grinned before she dove under the bed to look for some missing socks or something.  I turned to my own present and unwrapped it slowly; I had never gotten a gift from someone other than my family so I wasn’t sure how to handle it.  Once I got it open I gasped, it was a hand-thrown teapot with a picture of Georgie and I painted on the side.

“Georgie this is beautiful!”

She looked up and grinned sheepishly,

“Its not as good as yours.  I only just made that.”

“No Georgie!  This is one of the best gifts I’ve ever gotten!”

I gave her a hug and packed it with the rest of my stuff.

Later that morning as I was levitating my trunk down the stairs I saw Justin waiting for me and as soon as I reached the bottom of the stairs and had set my trunk down he grabbed my hand and pulled me away from everyone else.  He looked me right in the eye and said,

“I’m going to miss you Tori.”

He caressed my face with his hand and let it rest on the back of my neck, threading his fingers through my hair and that’s when I figured out what he was about to do.  I could see it in his eyes as his other hand slid around my waist and he pulled me closer.  My heart started to beat faster and faster, and almost like it was programmed into me, my head started to tilt, my eyes started to close.  I felt our lips connect as the butterflies in my stomach exploded with delight, and then he broke our kiss, just as smoothly as he started it but he didn’t pull away; he pulled me into a hug instead.  I held onto him tight because I knew I wouldn’t see him for at least a fortnight, I wasn’t sure then but I think I had fallen in love during that very moment.  We stood there in our embrace for a few more minutes before Professor Snape appeared in the common room,

My eyes popped open and we jumped apart,

“They’re getting ready to board the train so gather your stuff.  Hurry!”

As we parted Justin slipped a small box with a bow into my hand, gave me a kiss on the cheek, and a wink before disappearing up the stairs to the boy’s dormitory.  Without even realizing it, as I walked to my trunk I fingered the spot where he had kissed my cheek and it wasn’t until Georgie asked me what I was doing that I blushed and took my hand away.  I wasn’t ready to share this with her, so I changed the subject.  We got into a carriage with Rachel and another Ravenclaw girl I think her name was Harmony but I didn’t catch her last name (she’s probably a muggle-born), and once we got to the train the four of us found a compartment and played a few games of exploding snap before we arrived at Kings Cross Station to meet our parents.

Once everyone was out of the train it didn’t take long to find Mum, Aunt Ginny, and Uncle Blaise; I was a bit disappointed that Daddy wasn’t there to greet us but I didn’t think much about it.  I ran up to Mum and gave her a big hug before hugging Aunt Ginny and Uncle Blaise, then I stood aside as Rachel, James, and DJ greeted everyone and by that time our baggage cart was all loaded up and ready to go.  As we started walking towards the cars I pulled out a pendant that I would wear the entire time I was in the Glades, it belonged to Great-Grandmum Titania before she died and Mum gave it to me to wear; it was one of the best gifts I’ve ever gotten and I keep it with me everywhere I go, even if I don’t have to wear it.  For Christmas everyone had been invited to the Burrow so that’s where we were heading and then after that we would be going back to the Glades.

Uncle Blaise, Mum, Rachel, DJ, and I piled into the first car and Aunt Ginny, James, and his brothers and sisters took the second car.  I unfortunately got stuck sitting next to DJ, so I amused myself by looking out the window at all of the other Hogwarts students and their parents creeping out of the train station, some to their cars, some to the underground, and others to Diagon Alley.  That’s when I saw Justin and a woman who I assumed was his mother, he was the spitting image of her, tall and dark, almost intimidating but I wasn’t, I’m a Malfoy and Malfoys aren’t easily intimidated.

It didn’t take very long for us to get to the Burrow and I was almost relieved to get out of the car because being that close to DJ after being angry with him for so long was horrible.  As soon as I got out of the car Olivia and Alexandria came running over and practically jumped on me as they asked about Hogwarts.  I hugged them both and told them I’d tell them all about it later, they’re six and won’t be at Hogwarts for a long time but they’ve always wanted to be just like me so I try to tell them all about my interesting life.

Everyone is settled now, it’s a bit crowded because there’s so many people here this Christmas; Liv, Alex, Rachel, Zoey, Lily, and I are all sharing a room, while James, DJ, Demitri, and Tony are sharing the room across the hall from us.  Mum, Dad, Aunt Ginny, Uncle Harry, Uncle Blaise, and Aunt Padma all have rooms on the next floor.  Fred, George, Percy, Charlie, Jasleen (Charlie’s wife), Bill, Fleur, and Ron aren’t supposed to be here until tomorrow.  I have no idea where we’re going to fit everyone but I guess we’ll have to make it work; everyone was a bit surprised when we heard that Ron was coming because no one from the Glades has seen or heard from him since he walked out right after the Final Battle with Voldemort.

As my cousins and siblings went outside to have a snowball fight I decided to stay in and get a head start on all of my homework; as I was looking for my quill I ran across a little box with a bow on it and couldn’t stop myself from grinning.  In all the chaos of getting here I had forgotten about Justin’s gift; I sat down on the bed and began to open it, inside the box was another box but this one was black and velvety.  I gasped softly as I lifted the lid to reveal the most gorgeous necklace I had ever seen, it was goblin made, platinum with emeralds and it was inscribed on the back in a language I had never seen before and underneath that it had his mother and father’s names.

It was so beautiful that I wanted to wear it right away; it was cool to the touch as I put it on and then it burned but only for a minute.  If I had to guess I would say that it was probably enchanted to burn a potential thief because after it heated up it was cold again.  I looked at myself in the mirror and smiled, my violet eyes sparkled back at me, my curls as wild as ever; I hadn’t finished growing yet but Justin liked me just the same.  As I stood in front of the mirror I heard a voice ring out from downstairs and with that I tucked the necklace in my shirt and ran down to give my Daddy a big hug.

“There’s my girl!”

Daddy said as I jumped into his arms, he buried his face in my hair and gave me a kiss on the cheek.

“Your mother tells me that you’re a big Quidditch Hero now.  Taking after your dear old Dad?”

There was laughter from behind us,

“More like taking after her Uncle Harry don’t you think Draco?”

Daddy laughed as he shook hands with Uncle Harry and clapped him on the shoulder before giving Aunt Ginny a hug.  Just then Mum came through the door with some groceries but as soon as she saw Daddy she dropped them and ran into his arms,

“I’ve missed you so much Draco.”

She started crying, as she held onto him tight, I turned to Uncle Harry in confusion.

“Why is Mum crying?”

He signaled that we should go into another room and I followed him expectantly,

“Why was Mum crying Harry?”

He sighed, sat down in one of the chairs and motioned for me to sit on his lap.

“Your Mum and Dad are having some problems with a new Fairy Elder in the village.  See, he thinks that because your dad wasn’t born a Fairy that he shouldn’t have been allowed to marry your mum and is trying to break their bond.  All the tension and hate coming from this Elder caused your dad to move in with your Grandmum Malfoy.  Love, he hasn’t seen your mother and sisters since they saw you off for school.”

I gasped,

“But that’s ridiculous, Daddy loves Mum so much that he’d do anything for her!  That Elder has no reason to believe that daddy is inferior!  That’s like saying a muggle-born witch shouldn’t be allowed to go to Hogwarts!”

As I got angrier the necklace grew hot, my eyes started to change from violet to black, my whole body shook as my appearance went from normal to fairy but it wasn’t my usual fairy form it was dark and angry but powerful.  As I continued to get upset the house began to shake, the sky turned dark.  Lightning shot across the sky, thunder roared and winds howled.  Everyone ran into the room to try and figure out what was going on; my heart was pounding, blood rushed angrily through my veins and off in the distance I heard someone gasp.

Daddy ran over to me, pulled me off Uncle Harry and held on tight as his hands were burned over and over again, my skin was like fire but he didn’t let go.

“Victoria Lynn Malfoy, calm down!”

He shouted over the winds and thunder,

“I won’t let anything happen to this family!  I love your mother, I love your brother and your sisters, and I love you!”

He continued to shout as his words started to penetrate my mind,

“I wouldn’t have a life with your mum without you and I’m not about it give it up because some Village Elder thinks I’m inferior!”

He started crying as he held me and somewhere in my subconscious his raw emotion broke through my anger and I fainted.  As I became unconscious the sky went back to normal, the house stopped shaking, the winds died down and I returned to my human form but Daddy didn’t let me go, he cradled me like a baby, crying and hugging me.  Grandmum Weasley ushered everyone out and taking Liv and Alex with her, wanting to give us some privacy.

“DJ, why don’t you go back outside dear, this is something that your father, Tori, and I will need to talk about on our own.”

He didn’t argue, he was probably still in shock and left the room.

“Did you know she could do that?”

Daddy asked, still looking down at me.

“No, how would I have?  She’s never done anything like that before.”

They were both puzzled; they sat there in silence for a few moments before I began to stir.

“Tori darling, are you ok?”

I groaned and as I became more aware of my surroundings the pain returned,

“Mum, daddy, what happened?”

Mum inhaled sharply,

“The last thing I remember was talking to Uncle Harry.”

Daddy stroked my hair,

“You mean you don’t remember making the weather change, or the wind blow, or making the house shake?”

I shook my head,

“I can’t do those things, what are you talking about mum?”

Once they had gotten done telling me everything that had happened since talking with Uncle Harry until I had woken up, I couldn’t believe it.  As we continued to talk I noticed Daddy’s hands were all blistered and burned,

“What happened to your hands daddy?”

He looked down at them, almost as though he hadn’t registered that they were injured until now, he bit his lip but didn’t answer my question so I looked to mum for the answer.

“You were as hot as fire love.”

Tears welled up in my eyes as I realized I had caused my Daddy’s pain; I jumped up and ran out of the room.  I was halfway through packing my bags when mum walked into my room.  She sat down on the bed but didn’t try to stop me,

“Tori, your father loves you with every fiber of his being.  You are his miracle.”

I stopped packing but I didn’t turn around.

“I was going to wait until you were older but I think now is the right time.  I was betrothed to Uncle Harry, I found out on my 17th birthday but I didn’t love your Uncle that way.  He was my best friend, and still is but I was in love with your father.  I was frantic to find a way to get out of my betrothal and I finally did.  I concocted some potions with the help of Professor Snape and your father and I conceived you and DJ.  Its complicated thing to understand but DJ isn’t really your father’s son; he’s Uncle Harry’s.  Remember though that no matter what anyone tells you, you are your father’s miracle and that’s why he loves you so much.  But please don’t tell your brother about our conversation, he doesn’t need to know.”

I turned around and sat down on the bed,

“So the rumors are true.  I had always wondered.”

I gave mum a hug and that’s when she noticed the necklace.  She pulled it out of my shirt, looked at it and as she turned it over to see the back she gasped.

“Tori, where did you get this?”

“Justin gave it to me for Christmas.”

I blushed and looked down at the bedspread.

“Wow, I’ve never seen one of these before but I’ve heard of it.  People in the Wizarding community call it love jewelry although I’m not exactly sure what it’s really called.  It’s very rare and is handed down through old wizarding families, see look at the engraving on here.  Roughly translated that means, ‘A love that will last throughout time.’  And if you look here you’ll see that it’s already changed the names to Justin and Victoria.”

I gasped and grabbed the necklace back from her, sure enough it had changed,

“Love jewelry is the most brilliant Goblin made item you’ll ever find because its enchanted to know when there’s true love between the gift giver and the gift receiver and believe me darling those names wouldn’t have changed if it wasn’t sure of your feelings.  You mustn’t let anyone know that you have this because there’s a good chance that you will meet the same situation that your father and I are in with the Village Elders.  You are still young, you have plenty of time to figure this out so for now, wear it hidden.”

I nodded and tucked it back into my shirt, I would hide the jewelry but until I was sure, I wasn’t about to believe a pendant over my own heart.

Chapter 7: Christmas Day

Christmas Day approached with a heavy heart for me because tomorrow we would leave for the Glades without daddy.  I put on a brave face for the little ones though and we opened gifts with one-another before having a grand feast.  Once the feast was over though I decided to take a walk, I walked along the lane until I reached the village of Ottery St. Catchpole.  There were some shops that were open, most of them I had never heard of before so I just chose one and walked in.  The store was interesting; it had things in it I had never seen before.  I had grown up in the Fairy Glades, I didn’t know anything about muggles really save for the little bit that mum had taught us so all these gadgets were new to me.

The woman behind the counter must have known that I wasn’t from around here because she eyed me suspiciously, she probably thought I was going to steal something but honestly, what would I want any of these weird things for?  I didn’t even know how to use them.  I looked around for a little bit and then I left, I wanted to get back to the Burrow before dark.  On my way home I decided that I wasn’t going to go home to the Glades this year, I was going home with daddy to the Malfoy Manor because I hated the idea of Daddy being away from his family and even though Grandmum Malfoy would be there I didn’t want him to be alone.  So when I got back I found daddy sitting in the living room by himself having a glass of fire whiskey,

“Daddy?”  He looked up,

“Daddy, I was wondering if it would be alright if I went back with you to the Malfoy Manor for the rest of break.  I don’t want anything to do with the Glades if this is how they’re going to treat you!”

He looked at me sadly but nodded, I crawled up into his lap and he rocked us both while stroking my hair and before I knew it I had fallen asleep.

Later that night I heard arguing coming from downstairs, I looked around the room and all the other girls were still sleeping so I slithered out of bed and tiptoed downstairs to investigate.

“What do you mean she’s going home with you!?”

Mum and daddy were standing on opposite sides of the kitchen,

“What I mean my love is that Tori asked me if she could stay at Mum’s with me for the rest of her holiday.  She feels betrayed by the Fairies and she doesn’t want anything to do with them right now.”

Mum bristled,

“Feels betrayed by the Fairies!?  She is a Fairy!  She belongs with her kind!”

Daddy looked like he had been slapped, he was a Fairy as well,

“She’s coming home with me and that’s the end of discussion.”

He looked worn out and broken hearted as he trudged off to the living room, Mum sat down at the table with her head in her hands and I could tell she was crying.

“Are you and Daddy splitting up?”

Her head snapped up as she saw me hiding in the doorway,

“Don’t be silly Tori, I love your father more than anything.”

I nodded slowly,

“Come and sit down dear and tell me why you want to go with your father.”

I hesitated a minute,

“Mum, I love you, and Liv, Alex, and even DJ but I also love Daddy and I can’t stand to see him alone in that big house when he can’t be with the people he loves.  It breaks my heart mum.”

I started crying and as I did so everything around me because to droop; the plants and flowers began to wilt away and the sky opened up and began to rain.  My pain was their pain and though I didn’t realize what I was doing Mum did.

“Tori, Tori STOP!”

I looked up and saw what I was doing,

“Mum what’s going on?  Why does this keep happening?”

She shook her head,

“I’m not sure baby I’m just not sure.”

She kissed me goodnight and went off to find Daddy and apologize.  As I went to bed I saw them kissing and could feel my heart mending, everything would be all right.

Chapter 8: The Malfoy Manor

The next morning dawned cool and bright as I packed up my stuff for the trip to the Malfoy Manor.  No one knew that I wasn’t going home to the Glades with the rest of the family; Dad had come in and woken me up early, he told me to get packed because we were leaving before everyone else got up.

“Its for the best”

I told my mirror as I clicked the lock into place and started pulling my trunk downstairs.  I got about halfway down the stairs when I ran into Uncle Blaise,

“You’re up early Tori dear and already packed?  We’re not leaving until this afternoon.”

I looked at the floor,

“I’m not coming with you; I’ve decided I’m going home with Dad.”

He nodded thoughtfully,

“I’ve always seen you as your Daddy’s girl, it wouldn’t be right if you came home with us and left your father all alone.”

He gave me a hug and kissed the top of my head before he levitated my trunk the rest of the way down the stairs and into the kitchen.

“Take care of yourself girl.”

“I will Uncle Blaise.”

As I walked through the door to the kitchen the talking stopped and sitting at the table were, Mum, Dad, Grandmum Weasley, Bill, and Fleur.

“Morning everyone.”

I said as I sat down next to Dad and started fixing a piece of toast and a cup of tea.

“Good morning love, how did you sleep?”

Grandmum Weasley was the first to speak, probably trying to break the silence that had appeared when I walked into the room.  They had been talking about me, that much I was sure of and I was pretty sure of what they were saying but I didn’t press them for details.  After breakfast, I hugged everyone goodbye, took a handful of Floo Powder, and was on my way.

“Who’s this beautiful young woman?”

I had just stepped out of the fireplace,

I ran over and gave her a kiss and a hug before Dad had even appeared in the fireplace.  He strolled the length of the room in about 5 steps and gave Grandmum a kiss on the cheek before walking through the door.  We didn’t see him the rest of that day or the next and by noon on the third day I started to worry.

“Grandmum, I’m worried about Dad, I haven’t seen him at all since Christmas.”

She sighed,

“Your father is pining for your Mum, he doesn’t know what to do when he can’t fix something and so he’s locked himself in his room.  Why don’t you go talk to him, maybe he’ll realize what he has right in front of him.  A beautiful daughter who’s growing up way to fast.”

I grinned before jumping up from the table.  I searched around the house for Dad and it wasn’t until mid afternoon that I actually found him.  He was sitting alone in one of the libraries on the far end of the Manor;

“Dad?  Are you okay?”

He didn’t look up, I touched his shoulder and when he looked up I could see his eyes were bloodshot, he hadn’t shaved, and it looked like he had been drinking.

He grunted, he’d probably been sleeping,

“Are you having fun baby?”

“Dad snap out of it!  You haven’t lost Mum yet but if you keep acting like this you will.  You’re a Malfoy!  You’ve always told me that Malfoys fight for what they want and you’re not fighting.”

I started crying, my Dad had given up.  I spent the rest of the day by his side, as I held him in my arms I realized that in a few short days I had grown from a girl of eleven into a whole lot more.

The next day dawned bright and as I was eating breakfast and owl appeared at the window. Tap tap.  As I slid the pane of glass up the majestic bird stuck out its leg for me and waited as I broke the seal and read the letter.

Dear Tori,

I hope you had a brilliant Christmas.  I got your gift and it was bloody awesome!  Anyway I was writing to ask you if you wanted to come over for dinner on Thursday.  The time is dragging by without you.

Yours always,

I scribbled a quick reply and sent it on with the owl before I went back to my breakfast.  As I was finishing up with the Daily Prophet and my eggs Dad walked in.  He looked well rested, he’d shaved, and he was actually smiling.  He kissed the top of my head, sat down, and started piling food onto his plate; now this was the Dad I remembered.

I said sweetly,

“Is it alright if I go over to the Flints for dinner on Thursday night?”

He tilted his head and looked at me,

“Isn’t their son a fifth year?”

I could feel myself blushing as I nodded but hurried to add,

“He’s the Capitan of the Quidditch team.”

Dad grinned; he bloody well knew that being the Quidditch Capitan wasn’t the only reason I wanted to go.

“I don’t care if you go but why don’t you invite him to stay the weekend, he can sleep in one of the guest rooms and we’ll get him on the train on Monday.  That way I can make sure he’s treating my baby girl the right way.”

He winked at me as I dashed around the table to give him a hug.

As Thursday approached I began to worry that Justin’s parents wouldn’t allow him to stay with us for the rest of the weekend so I sent an owl to Georgie asking her if she wanted to come for the weekend also.  I had been thinking about what Mum said and I didn’t want to give anyone outside of our family a reason to think I cared about Justin, as more than a friend, when I wasn’t sure myself so having Georgie around would be good cover.

I spent my days outside practicing Quidditch with Dad near the back of the yard, there was good tree cover there and as long as we used golf balls none of the neighbors could see what we were doing.  During the time when I wasn’t playing Quidditch with Dad I was working on my homework, trying to get ahead and using magic, even though I wasn’t supposed to.  On Wednesday evening I was in the library reading my newest book An Intermediate Guide to Ancient Ruins By: Helga Hunter, when I noticed a flash of lightning streak across the sky and then there was a great clap of thunder.

I set my book down and walked across the room to shut the curtains, while on my way back I noticed some books I’d never seen before.  They were black leather-bound books with gold embossed title in some weird symbols that I thought could be Ancient Runes but I wasn’t sure.  I took out the first one I saw and opened it, as I was paging through it I found a few symbols that I recognized; it was a book about the Dark Arts.  The few sentences that I could make out left me wanting to read more, I picked up my other book and went back to my room.

I would have to wait until I got back to Hogwarts and then I would check out some more books on Ancient Runes from the library but for now it would have to wait.  I spent the rest of the night getting ready for my visit with the Flints; I took a long hot bubble bath, I was in there so long that my fingers and toes came out all shriveled but once I had gotten dressed and laid down in bed I felt much calmer.

The next morning I woke up with a start, almost as though someone had just clashed two cymbals together right next to my ear; it took me a minute to realize where I was and what day it was but as soon as I did I jumped out of bed.  I rushed downstairs and into the dinning room for breakfast.

“Morning Dad, Grandmum.”

I gave them both a kiss and then sat down at the table.

“Good Morning dear, are you excited about going to visit the Flints today?”

I nodded,

“We’ll have a great time strategizing for the Slytherin/Hufflepuff game.”

I grinned as I filled my plate with breakfast items and as soon as I was done eating I asked to be excused and ran upstairs to shower and get dressed.  The next thing I knew it was time to leave, the morning had gone by so quickly!

Dad and I were going to take the horse-drawn carriage since the Flints only lived a few miles away and he wanted to ask in person if Justin could spend the weekend at the Manor.  As we rode up the long driveway to the front of their house I looked around at their yard, it was huge!  That’s when I noticed a 15-year-old boy flying around a makeshift Quidditch Pitch near the end of the property and I sighed as we came to a stop.

We stepped out of the carriage as Mr. And Mrs. Flint and two little ones came around the side of the house to greet us.  My Dad stepped forward as they neared,

“Marcus, good to see you.”

They shook hands and then Dad kissed Mrs. Flint on the cheek.

“This is my daughter Victoria.”

I smiled and shook their hands before Dad continued,

“I was hoping that you both would be inclined to let Justin stay at the manor for the rest of the week, Georgina Black is going to be staying with us also and that way you won’t have to make a trip to Kings Cross.”

“They will be adequately supervised?”

“Of course Gina, I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

As the adults were talking, Justin snuck up behind me and grabbed my hand, only for a fraction of a second but I felt it nonetheless and it didn’t stop my stomach from exploding with butterflies.

“Mother, I’m going to shower up for dinner quickly.  Tori, come you can keep the little ones company while the adults talk.”

He winked at me.  I looked at the little Flints; there was Bianca who was three and Xavier who was five.  They bound over to me and each took a hand before pulling me towards the house,

“Bye Dad, we’ll see you later tonight”

I called over my shoulder as they pulled me through the door.  He waved and smiled; as soon as the door was shut Justin turned to the little ones,

“Why don’t you guys go to the playroom and pick out some toys to show Tori and we’ll be along in a minute alright?”

They nodded and ran off.  Justin took my hand and pulled me down the hall into what I assumed was his bedroom and shut the door.  He put his hands on my waist before pulling me into a hug,

“I missed you so much.”

He said into my hair, we stood there for a few moments before he pulled away and gave me a quick peck on the cheek.

“We’d better go or the little ones will be in here soon.”

I nodded sadly; I didn’t want to move, I wanted to stay there forever but I let him lead me down the hall to the playroom.  He stopped right outside the door,

“I’ll just be a few minutes.”

I nodded and turned the handle as he walked back down the hall.

“Hey you guys, what do you have there?”

I asked as I walked through the playroom door, Bianca ran over to me and tugged on my arm, pulling me over to her toy cauldron equipped with toy potion ingredients and everything.  I could tell that she was going to be a great potions mistress when she was all grown up; she handled the herbs like a pro.

As I looked over at Xavier I could see that he was playing with old quaffles, bludgers, and snitches; I could see that he was going to take after his big brother, which made me smile.  I played with each of them and Xavier thought it was so cool that I was on the Slytherin Quidditch team with his brother.

“I didn’t know girls could play Quidditch!”

“Of course they can.”

I smiled at him,

“When you’re the Capitan of the team like your brother is, you want the best team you can get and if there’s a girl whose loads better than a boy then you’d want to put the girl on your team.  You want to win right?”

He nodded and grinned; that’s when Justin snuck in and tried to surprise me.

“Hey Justin.”

I said as he was inches away from me,

“How did you know I was here?”

I turned and smiled at him,

“I’ll tell you later maybe.”

He pouted a little bit but nodded.  Just then a house elf appeared,

“Master Justin, I is here to watch the little ones so you and Miss Malfoy is alright to leave.”

We thanked the elf and disappeared into the far corner of the library, here I saw that they had made a common room of sorts for Justin to bring his friends.  It was quaint, decorated in the Slytherin colors, there were comfy couches and chairs with a table where I suspect Justin does his homework when he’s home.  He sat down in a chair and pulled me onto his lap,

“You’re so beautiful Tori.”

I smiled and sighed as I lay my head down on his chest; he was playing with my curls when his hand brushed the chain around my neck.  I sat up, my eyes wide as he pulled it out of my shirt and immediately turned it over, I could see the shock in his eyes as he read our names as he looked up our eyes met and the realization of what we both felt was communicated whether we wanted to or not.

Dinner that night was uncomfortable, as we were served the first course the questions started.

“Now tell us about your mother dear.  What did you say her name was again?”

I hesitated,

“My mum was known at Hogwarts as Hermione Granger, everyone thought she was a muggle-born but it turns out she was adopted by some muggles after her parents were killed.”

They nodded, I could tell that they weren’t sure whether to believe me or not but they moved on.

“Justin tells us you have a twin brother, is that correct?”

I nodded,

“I also have two sisters that are six years old.”

They nodded again,

“Justin tells us that you’re a very bright young lady.”

My eyes connected with his and he blushed.

“I guess you could say that I take after my mum in that aspect.  I’ve gotten full marks on everything so far.”

Again they nodded.  I was glad when the Malfoy carriage arrived and once the house elves had loaded Justin’s trunk we were off; we sat in silence as the carriage rolled down the road, I laid my head on Justin’s shoulder and willed away the stress from dinner.  It wasn’t long before the carriage rolled to a stop outside the front door of the Manor; Justin jumped out and offered me a hand before following me inside.  Once we were in the entryway he requested to see my father and as though he had expected this, Dad appeared in the doorway to the dinning room.

“What can I do for you son?”

Justin looked him right in the eye and said,

“May I speak with you sir?  Perhaps alone?”

He nodded and signaled for Justin to follow.

Chapter 9: On The Hogwarts Express

The weekend flew by and suddenly it was time to go back to Hogwarts.  We arrived at King’s Cross fairly early and had found a quiet compartment at the end of the train and were now sitting in a compartment by ourselves, Georgie was sitting on one side, I was sitting right across from her, and Justin was laying down with his head in my lap, I was running my fingers through his hair absentmindedly.  There was a knock at the door and Rachel stuck her head in.

“Hey guys!  Can I join you?”

I nodded and grinned, Rachel and I always had a good relationship growing up and between all of my cousins she was my favorite.

“How was the rest of your holiday Tori?  Dad said that you decided to spend it with Uncle Draco?”

I nodded,

“Georgie and Justin came over on Thursday night and spent the weekend.  We had fun but I miss home, Dad does too.”

She nodded sadly,

“DJ was in a foul mood the whole time and he’s been sulking all morning.”

I couldn’t help being surprised because it always seemed as though DJ didn’t care what I did or whom I did it with.  It wasn’t until we started at Hogwarts that he started getting upset; I wonder if it’s because I have better grades than him.

“How’s Mum, Rachel?  I didn’t see her on the platform.”

She looked at her feet,

“That’s because she didn’t come.”

I was shocked!  Mum never stayed home when the family went out unless something extremely important came up.

“Was there something important going on at the Ca…urm…home?”

I had almost said ‘at the castle’, I couldn’t believe that I almost blew our secret.  She shook her head;

“It’s the same problem as before, she didn’t want to breakdown on the platform when she saw your Dad.”

Justin sat up just then and looked at me,

“What’s going on between your parents Tor?”

I didn’t answer; a tear trickled down my cheek only to be wiped away by Justin’s thumb.  I hated that the Fairy Counsel was discriminating against my dad, he was the kindest, bravest, most loyal man I knew and all they could think about was his blood.  I looked at the floor as Rachel filled them in,

“Tori’s Mum and Dad are having a bit of trouble, her Mum is in a position of…err…power I guess you could say within the Village that we live in and some of the Elders disapprove of her marriage to Uncle Draco.  They’ve been separated since September and it’s been really hard on Tori.”

Justin nodded thoughtfully,

“Isn’t there anything Mr. Or Mrs. Malfoy can do?”

Rachel shook her head and said,

“All they can do is wait for the counsel to make a decision.”

As the day wore on Rachel and Georgie had both left to visit with other people but Justin stayed glued by my side.  Mid-morning as we were playing Exploding Snap I suddenly realized that I forgot to ask what happened with Justin and Dad’s meeting.

He looked up from the cards,

I looked him right in the eye,

“I was just wondering, what did you talk to my Dad about?”

He blinked and looked away, I could see him face twinge pink, I guess I had put him on the spot.

“It was a personal matter that involves you.  I…err…I asked him if it would be alright if I asked for your hand in marriage some day, we’ll be betrothed as of your next birthday.”

He hurried to add,

“If you agree, that is.”

I studied his face as I thought about what he said,

“Why do you want to marry me?”

He looked at me for a minute, choosing his words carefully,

“I don’t know, there’s just something special about you…but does that mean you accept?”

I nodded, he swooped me up into a hug, not caring that he knocked over our game in the process and as he leaned in and brushed his lips to mine the door to the compartment slammed open.

“Get your grubby Slytherin paws off my sister before I hex you into next Tuesday!”

DJ stood there, he was positively fuming, his right hand clenched tightly around his wand.  Justin put me down slowly and was backing away when DJ whipped his wand out and pointed it right at him.  I jumped in between them,

He didn’t budge but tried to find a clear shot at Justin, which was making me even angrier.  DJ saw what was happening, he must have remembered what happened at Grandmum Weasley’s house because he lowered his wand and took a step forward.

I roared; fire flashed through my eyes and without realizing it my concealment charms disappeared.  DJ hastened to shut the compartment door,

“Calm her down!”

He shouted at Justin, knowing that he was the only one who could succeed at the task.  He crept forward slowly,

“Tori?  Love, calm down.”

He said softly, he reached out to me, clearly scared by what was happening.

“She won’t hurt you Flint!  I can only barricade the door for so long, so hurry!”

He touched my arm and then yanked his hand away before realizing that I really wouldn’t hurt him.  He inched forward, little by little until his arms slip completely around my waist.  I could hear him in the distance talking to me, he was telling me to calm down, telling me that he loved me and that DJ wasn’t really going to hurt him; his words started to break through the invisible shell around me and I started to return to normal.

The episode had cost me a lot of energy and they both could see that I was drained.  Justin led me over to one of the benches and he sat down with his back to the window.  He pulled me down so that my head was on his chest with the rest of my body between his legs and within minutes I had fallen asleep.

As I slept DJ explained everything to Justin, being half Fairy, half Elf, about our Mum being the Fairy Queen, about how Dad might be forced to leave the Fairy Glades forever because one Elder didn’t like that he wasn’t born a Fairy but made into one via potions, everything and once everything had been explained and Justin realized how precarious of a situation I was in he understood why I was upset.

“You have to promise that you won’t tell anyone.  Not a soul, understand?”

Justin nodded slowly, still processing everything that DJ had told him.

“If you tell anyone about my sister or me I will kill you.”

Justin’s eyes clouded over but he agreed.  Once DJ had left and it was just the two of us again Justin sighed, he had never imagined that there were real Fairies in the magical world and he’d never expected to fall in love with one.

It wasn’t long before I started to stir and as I opened my eyes I smiled because the first thing I saw was Justin, he had been playing with the necklace he gave me for Christmas,

“Its beautiful, and so special to me Justin.  You have no idea.”

He smiled down at me,

“DJ told me everything.  After what happened there wasn’t any way around it.”

I sighed,

“I don’t know what’s happening to me Justin.  These weird things start happening when I get really angry or really sad and neither Mum nor Dad knows how to explain it.  It’s so scary because I can’t control it.”

He listened intently as I vented my frustration with myself and I began to realize that he really did care for me.  Once I was done we lay there for a little while longer and I listened to his heartbeat, when suddenly I had an idea.  I sat up and started to unbutton his shirt,

“Wait Tori!  What are you doing?”

I grinned at him,

“Not that silly, I wanted to see something.”

Once his shirt was completely undone I looked at the skin that had been hidden underneath.

“See, I’ve heard some of the people in the Village talk about this magic that can only be performed by some fairies.”

I placed my wand hand on his chest right over his heart and closed my eyes, I breathed in and out in time with the beating of his heart and willed my Fairy powers to work.  As I took my hand away you could see a faint mark on the skin over his heart, it was a Rune that translated to ‘My true love’.

“It’ll darken as our love grows and once we’re married it’ll disappear.”

I buttoned his shirt back up but not before kissing the Rune, which made blend in with his natural skin tone.  He kissed me tenderly as the Hogwarts Express pulled into Hogsmeade station.

Chapter 10: Slytherin vs. Hufflepuff

About a month had gone by since Christmas, and the match against Hufflepuff was coming up.  It was an important match because if we won we’d be in the finals, so Justin had the whole team practicing day in and day out, we basically practiced from the end of classes until curfew and even then a few of us snuck out to practice on the pitch at night.  It was important to win this match because we would probably be playing Gryffindor in the finals and I wanted to beat my brother so badly.

As Quidditch practices were going strong the amount of homework that the Professors were giving out started increasing and I couldn’t go into the common room without hearing someone griping about how much homework Professor Snape had given them or that Professor Binns wanted a 10-foot essay on the Rise and Fall of Lord Voldemort.  I wasn’t having any problems with my homework which was good and bad, the bad part was that everyone, even the older kids were asking me to help them, apparently it had gotten around the Slytherin house that I was brilliant so now I studied in the Astronomy tower.

The week before our match against Hufflepuff I got a letter from Dad.  It was Saturday and I was sitting at the Slytherin table in the Great Hall eating lunch when my owl Gloria came swooping in with the letter, stamped with the Malfoy crest.

My Dear Tori,

The Counsel has finally made a decision, and I’m moving back home tonight.  I went and pleaded my case to the Head Elder and he insisted that they were being silly, that I had lived in the village and served the Fairies since I was 18 years old and there was no reason to believe that I was anything but worthy to be married to your mother.  You made me realize that I had to fight for her.  Thank you Tori, you really are becoming a wonderful young lady and I love you.

Hugs & Kisses,

I squealed in excitement and ran off to find my brother.  Later that evening as I was heading back to the Slytherin common room from Quidditch practice I heard some voices behind a tapestry,

“He’s been spending an awful lot of time with her.”

Said one angry voice,

“I know!  I bet she’s bewitched him with some sort of love potion!”

There was some movement and as I ducked behind a suit of armor two sets of feet appeared from behind the tapestry and headed in the direction of the Ravenclaw common room.  I couldn’t help but wonder who they were talking about; it seemed to me that these two girls were jealous.  It really wasn’t my business but I was curious just the same so I decided to follow them, I thought they might continue to talk about this girl if I did.  I snuck up behind a cute Asian fourth year and an Irish fifth year both dressed in Ravenclaw robes.

“He’s so dreamy though, what could he possibly see in a lowly first year?”

The Asian girl sighed,

Said the other simply,

“The Malfoy name is synonymous with power.  Everyone knows that.”

I gasped.  They couldn’t be talking about me…could they?  I stopped following them after that but I couldn’t stop thinking about what I’d heard.  Justin loved me; I knew that but could it be possible that his love was only for my name?  I went to bed that night more confused then ever.

The next morning I woke up with a weird feeling in the pit of my stomach but it wasn’t long before I remembered the conversation I had overheard the night before.  I didn’t want to believe that Justin only loved me for my name but I needed to find out for sure.  That would have to wait though because this afternoon was the Slytherin/Hufflepuff game and I needed to be at my best.

After breakfast I went back to the rock by the lake and began to meditate; just like I had before the Ravenclaw game, only this time I wasn’t feeling rage.  This was becoming a Quidditch tradition for me because as soon as I heard the voices and footsteps of the other students I headed towards the changing rooms to get ready for the game.  We crushed Hufflepuff, 300-0 and celebrated with Butterbeer and Cauldron Cakes until dawn.  We were in the finals!

Chapter 12: Veritaserum

Chapter 11: Veritaserum

Over the next month all I could think about was what those girls had been talking about, I was hesitant to say anything to him about it because I didn’t want to accuse him of something if he didn’t do it but then again I didn’t think I’d ever feel the same if I didn’t know the truth.  Then one day I was sitting in on a 6th year Potions class where Professor Snape was giving a lecture on a potion I’d never seen before.

“Now, you’ve probably noticed that this potion is colorless as well as odorless, easily mistaken for water it takes a full lunar cycle to brew.  Three drops of this potion will have you sharing your inner most secrets to everyone.  It is very complex however by the end of your N.E.W.T.s you should be able to brew a near perfect batch of Veritaserum.”

As the class copied down the notes that Professor Snape had written on the board an idea started to form.  I could brew Veritaserum in secret and use it to find out if Justin really loved me or just my name!  It was brilliant but there were a few problems, where was I going to get a copy of the instructions for the potion, where was I going to get the ingredients and where was I going to brew it?  I left the lesson with a lot of questions and no answers, I was so distracted that I almost ran right into the very person I was thinking about.

“Whoa Tori.”

He grabbed me as I tripped and pulled me to him; I couldn’t help but smile as he looked down at me.

“I’ve barely seen you over the last few days Tor; where have you been?”

His eyes sought out mine as I tried to think up a lie,

“I…erm…well I’ve been stu…studying and umm…”

I looked at my feet in shame I couldn’t lie to him.  I think he knew there was something bothering me but he didn’t press me on it; he just gave me a hug and a kiss and walked away.

As hard as it was I avoided Justin over the next week as I tried to come up with answers to my problems with the plan and then as I was sitting with D.J, Rachel, and James one day in the Great Hall during our morning break from classes James mentioned Uncle Harry’s old potion’s book.

“Yeah he told me that it belonged to the ‘Half-Blood Prince’.”

He went on excitedly,

“He said it was the reason he did so well in potions but he never found out who it belonged to.”

I jumped up suddenly as I realized that James had just inadvertently answered one of my questions!  I ran to the owlery looking for Gloria and once I spotted her I got out a piece of parchment and a quill and scribbled down a quick note, sealed it, and sent Gloria on her way.

I didn’t have to wait long for a reply, there was one the next morning as I sat down to breakfast; it was stamped with the royal Elvin seal.  My heart started pounding as I broke the wax and read what Uncle Harry had written.

Dear Victoria,

I got your owl late last night, it sounded urgent so I wrote back as quickly as I could and I hope this gets to you before it ends up in the wrong hands.  I understand your concerns about Young Flint’s quick attachment and supposed love for you, however I don’t want you to think that you need a potion to tell you if he really loves you and not just your power.  I hate to think that as young as you are that you’re already going through this and I only hope that my girls don’t get put in the same position so I’m going to help you out.  I’ve sent a parcel with Hedwig; it contains the Half-Blood Prince’s copy of ‘Advanced Potion Making’, the Marauder’s Map (which I think you will find useful), and a note from your mother who unfortunately intercepted your owl to me.  Be careful love, I’ll talk to you soon.

Uncle Harry

I squealed in excitement as I destroyed the letter; no one must know that I have the Prince’s book or the Marauder’s Map.

I anxiously awaited Uncle Harry’s parcel and it wasn’t until Thursday that it showed up.  I was pacing back and forth in the common room when Professor Snape swooped in with Hedwig on his shoulder.

“Miss Malfoy, I believe this.  Belongs to you.”

He smirked at me as he caught my gaze and held it for what seemed like a really long time.  I felt a little strange after but I brushed it off and took the parcel and Hedwig from him and rushed up to my bed.  I gasped softly as I looked over the items I’d requested, fingering the spine of the potions book gently I flipped it open and skimmed the first page.

It was just as I pictured it; the worn cover, the notations in the margins, the creases that Uncle Harry had made as he was experimenting with the spells written in it, and the smell.  Oh how I loved the smell of old books; there was just something about the dust of an old library, it sent shivers down my spine.  After a bit I put the book down and turned to the Marauder’s Map.  Uncle Harry didn’t tell me how to use it but I was sure that James knew so my next obstacle was to get the information out of him without making him suspicious.

As I sat there playing absentmindedly with old parchment I remembered that Mum had sent me a letter as well!  I stood up and looked around for it but it wasn’t there, it wasn’t on the bed, or the floor, it wasn’t under the bed, or on the nightstand.  I couldn’t find it!  This was bad.  This was really, really bad.  I tore through everything I had and then turned back to the book; maybe I put it in there on accident?

The only problem was that I didn’t remember seeing the note to begin with.  I frantically searched every page in the book until I came to one near the very end; at the top of the page was the word, the word I had been thinking about non-stop for the last few days, Veritaserum.  The note was right there, clipped to the side of the page as if waiting for me to discover it.  I took it from the page, slid my finger under the wax seal, and was surprised to see only three words, Moaning Myrtle’s Bathroom written in Mum’s slanted handwriting.  She had just given me the answer to my next question.  The only questions left were, how do I open the Marauder’s Map and where can I get the ingredients for the potion?

The answers wouldn’t come to me for another week, maybe two but with the finals of the Quidditch Cup fast approaching I barely noticed.  Justin had us practicing 6 nights a week, giving us Sundays to do our homework.  He said there was no way we were going to let Gryffindor win with such a great team.

AN: Sorry this chapter isn't one of my best but I needed to set the scene.

Chapter 13: The Potion Master's Cupboard
[Printer Friendly Version of This Chapter]

Chapter 12: The Potions Master’s Cupboard

It was a warm Tuesday night and I was sitting on my bed looking over ‘Advanced Potion Making’; I was looking at the list of ingredients for the potion:

-         Powdered Horn of a Romanian Longhorn

-         Three drops of Erumpent fluid

-         A Pinch of Crushed Hellebore

-         One drop of Acromantula Venom

-         Half a cup of Flobberworm Mucus

Blah, blah, blah…the words fluttered on the page as my eyes drooped and without realizing it I slipped into a dream-like state.

I was walking down a narrow hallway, the walls were made of the same stone as the walls of Hogwarts but I didn’t recognize anything else there.  As I neared the end I saw a door, light shining underneath it was ajar.  I stopped for a minute outside the door, debating on whether to go in or not but in the end my curiosity won out and I pushed the door open.  Before I had even crossed the threshold I could see jars lined the walls but I couldn’t be sure what was in them until I had a closer look.  I crept into the room, glancing around to make sure I was alone and once I was sure I made my way towards the nearest shelf to have a look.  The first jar I picked up had a slimy green plant that looked like seaweed and it was labeled “Gillyweed”.  I gasped as I realized what this was; it was a potion’s storeroom but where?  Who did these ingredients belong to?  Before I could explore any further ……

“Tori?  Tori!”

Georgie shook me awake,

“Did you hear that?”

I groaned and rolled over to face her, rubbing my eyes.

“Hear what?”

No sooner had the words left my mouth and there it was again.  A soft humming came from downstairs; now I was wide-awake, I flung the covers aside and leapt out of bed before flying down the stairs into the common room.  I knew what that sounds was and if I didn’t get out of the common room right now the whole school would find out I was a fairy!

Hours later I shook my head angrily as I crept back into my bed, hoping I wouldn’t wake up any of the other girls in my dorm.

Earlier that evening:

I threw some clothes over my nightgown, rushed out into the corridors, and ran head first into the very thing I was dreading.  I screamed as I was sucked into the swirling vortex of doom (but really I’m being dramatic); I landed a minute later with a thump on the floor in front of the Fairy Counsel.

“Do you know why you are here Victoria?”

The Eldest one asked sternly; I shook my head as I stood up and dusted myself off.

“You have been brought before the Fair Counsel because your father has betrothed you to an unworthy soul, a mere wizard without the consent of this Counsel!”

I was starting to see why they brought me here in the middle of the night; they didn’t want my mother to know what they were up to because surely she would have stopped them.

“I do not see the problem Sir.”

I said with an edge.  The Head Elder looked at me for a minute, clearly wondering if I was mocking him or if I seriously didn’t see a problem with this arrangement.

“You are a Fairy Princess, you cannot marry a wizard!  This distinguished body will not allow it!”

My eyes flashed as it became clear that they didn’t have my best at heart, they were angry that they couldn’t destroy my parent’s marriage.

“I am not the successor, so you do not have the authority to tell me who I may or may not marry.”

I spat, my breathing becoming more rapid with each word; a few of the newer members seemed taken aback and a little nervous by my reaction but the most seasoned members underestimated me in that moment.

“You are forbidden to marry the wizard and that is the end of this DISCUSSION!”

My anger peaked at that moment; I felt the power coursing through me and made my first conscious decision to use it.

I felt myself lift off the ground, I felt my body changing, wings sprouted out of my back, my hair grew long and dark, my eyes became black as the vision in them sharpened;

“You do not get to decide my life for me.”

My voice had become low and menacing and before I knew it power irrupted from my hands, filling the hut with black light as every member of the Counsel fell to the ground dead.  I landed lightly on the floor back in my normal form, realizing what I had done I rushed out of there and up to the Castle to find my dad.

The Next Day:

I woke up in my four-poster bed a bit disoriented, not really remembering what had happened the night before.  In fact the only thing I really could remember was being very very angry at something but for the life of me I couldn’t remember what it was.  I brushed it off as a bad dream and that’s when I remembered…the store cupboard!  I wonder where it could be, is it possible that it’s within Hogwarts?  How would I find out?  I thought about it for a while as I got dressed and then as I went into the common room, as I went to breakfast, during my first class; it wasn’t until lunch that I remembered Uncle Harry’s parcel.  The Marauder’s Map!

A/N:  Sorry this chapter is so short, its more of a filler chapter than anything else.

Chapter 14: Snape’s Store
[Printer Friendly Version of This Chapter]

Chapter 13: Snape’s Store

The first thing I did the following day was search out James and it didn’t take long for me to find him. He was flying around the Quidditch Pitch with the rest of the Gryffindor team, no doubt training for the match against us. I sat in the stands and waited as patiently as I could. I watched as James fumbled the Quaffle, as D.J. searched tirelessly for the Snitch, and as the rest of the team did their best to beat the reserve players. I searched the skies absentmindedly not really looking for the Snitch but it wasn’t long before I found it, that glint of fluttering gold, I dragged my eyes around to see if my brother had spotted it but he hadn’t. I kept my eyes on him for the rest of their practice; unfortunately he hadn’t found the Snitch once.

As I waited outside the Gryffindor changing rooms I started to wonder if my perfect plan was in actuality pretty dumb. Losing a Quidditch match to me wasn’t punishment and in all I wasn’t really that angry with my twin anymore. I guess I was growing up more quickly than I thought because it seemed that in six months my whole outlook on life was different. James and D.J. were the last two to emerge from the changing rooms and they stopped when they saw me standing there;

“Hi guys.”

I said looking them right in the eyes,

“I have a favor to ask.”

They looked intrigued and followed me when I started walking to a remote part of the grounds, I didn’t want to be overheard. I explained everything from the betrothal to what those girls had said and ended with what I suspected had happened the night I was called back to the Fairy Glades even though I couldn’t remember exactly. They sat there quietly listening, knowing there was more to the story.

“I’m going to brew Veritaserum, I want to know for sure how he feels about me. If I’m going to marry him some day then I want to know the truth.”

They nodded,

“What do you need from us then?”

I pulled out the torn piece of parchment; they looked from me to the parchment and back to me before realization dawned on their faces.

“How did you get that?”

James said softly.

“Your dad sent it to me when I asked for the Half Blood Prince’s copy of ‘Advanced Potion Making’. Do you know how to make it work?”

He stared at me blankly for a moment before reaching for the parchment, tapping it with his wand and saying,

“I solemnly swear that I am up to no good.”

He handed it back to me as the ink snaked across the page.

“Just make sure you say ‘Mischief managed’ when you’re done otherwise anyone can read it.”

I nodded and started looking over the map in front of me; I didn’t see anything that looked like a personal store cupboard for potion ingredients. I sighed,

“I don’t suppose that you know where I could get the ingredients for the potion do you?”

The two boys grinned at each other,

“We…erm…stumbled across Snape’s store cupboard in like our second week.”

They sniggered softly,

“We’ll get you the ingredients, just make us a list.”

I gasped,

“You’d do that for me?”

D.J. nodded earnestly, I jumped up and hugged them both as they sputtered about how un-cool it was to be seen hugging me.

That night I slipped them the list and watched their progress on the Marauder’s Map from the safety of my dorm room. I hadn’t seen Justin at all that day; it kind of made me wonder if he really was only interested in me for my name, my money, and my power. My attention went back to the map as I saw my brother’s dot moving down a hallway I’d never been in before. Sure enough he stopped outside a door that was labeled ‘storage’, kind of sneaky really because no one would think to go in there if it was just a storage closet. I watched D.J. move around the room before I noticed another dot approaching the room. It was Professor Snape! I had to do something and fast! I ran down into the common room, looked around quickly, screamed and fell to the ground convulsing before I passed out. From there I’m not too sure what happened but from what I’ve been told Justin rushed over to me as Georgie raced out of the room calling for Professors Snape, McGonagall, Dumbledore and Madam Pomfrey. Justin cradled my head in his lap as they waited for help to come; it arrived moments later. I was rushed up to the hospital wing, Justin in hot pursuit and Georgie rushed off to find my brother and cousins. When I awoke the Professors and Madam Pomfrey surrounded me; my family, Justin, and Georgie were standing off to the side.

I rubbed my head, trying to remember what happened.

“Why am I in the Hospital Wing?”

Professor Dumbledore answered first,

“You had a seizure and fainted.”

He paused, waiting for me to say something;

“Umm…what caused it?”

Madam Pomfrey spoke next,

“I’m not sure my dear but we’ve talked to your parents and they agree that you should be seen at St. Mungo’s.”

I shot up but was immediately shoved back down by Madam Pomfrey.

“I can’t go to St. Mungo’s! I can’t miss class!”

“You can make up your class work when you return.”

Professor Dumbledore said, a twinkle in his eye as he realized that I was just like my mother. The next afternoon I was transferred to St Mungo’s, forced to undergo test after test and when they were finished they still didn’t know what was wrong with me.
