Chapter 1: If Only I Didn't Care
[Printer Friendly Version of This Chapter]

"Hermione, what are you doing?" Ron said as he tried to stop Hermione from packing her things. "It was just a letter; it was probably just a prank - a mean, stupid prank . . ."

"Ron, you don't get it, do you?" She replied in almost a whisper as she stopped packing. "They know. They know what I saw...."

She sat down on the bed and wiped away the fresh tears that had formed at her eyes. She looked at Ron only to find that he was crying too, but he was in a more panicked state and she knew he would do anything to make sure she didn't leave him . . . not like this.

"Ron, I love you, you know that! From the day you proposed I have been devoted to you and I always will be. Can't you see I am doing this for you and only you? If I didn't care so bloody much I would stay here with you, but I do Ron. I love you and nothing will happen to you as long as I am gone." She said this passionately as she leaned over and kissed him. "I have to go for your sake . . ."

"No Hermione. No - I took those vows too and it said “‘til death do us part” and I won’t let you go out there alone and endanger yourself. As long as you’re with me I will protect you - I swear I will!" Ron said as he wrapped his arms around her laying his head on hers. "I won’t, I can't let you go . . . can't you realize that?"

Hermione smiled as she listened to him; she didn't want to leave him but she knew she had to.

"Promise me you won’t leave? Let us do this together?" he said with a sob. Hermione promised and he began to relax, "Just put away the clothes you packed please? It would put my mind at ease..." he said as he let go of Hermione and stood up. He smiled at her sadly as he left the room.

"Oh, Ron . . ." Hermione whispered as she continued packing, "I'm sorry . . ."

She had to leave that night before she lost her nerve; she had to for Ron's sake. And all because of a certain letter, a letter that threatened her and Ron's life if she wouldn't leave him. A tear ran down her cheek as she picked up their wedding photo. He was her support, her life, her everything and here she was leaving him. She didn't know when she was coming back or if she ever could. A sob escaped her throat and she clutched the photograph to her chest before putting it in a suitcase. When she was packed and all ready she hid the cases under the bed. It was time to say her goodbyes. But it was even harder not to burst out crying or let him know she was leaving.

"Ron, I love you . . . " she whispered in his ear when she went into the living room and saw him sitting on the couch re-reading the letter which brought them so much pain and suffering. He smiled at her before she leaned in and kissed him with more passion than she had even kissed him with. He seemed surprised but pleased and began to return her kisses with at the least as much passion. She wanted their last night together to be special.

Their kiss seemed to last forever until they where forced to break apart for a breath. Lust gleamed in his eyes and she was going to give it to him, anything he wished, for that night had to perfect for the both of them.

"Oh . . . Hermione I am so glad you stayed," he said slowly as he began pulling off his own shirt. "I promise from now on it’s always going to be about you."

It took everything for Hermione not to burst out crying for she knew the next morning she was planning on leaving. She knew there would be no "from now on" from now to whenever she thought it would be safe to return it would just be her. She couldn't hold back the tears any longer - they spilled over her cheeks as Ron kissed her neck. She even let out a cry that he must have mistook for a moan, for he didn't even look up. She felt his hands roaming her body as she held his warm body to hers. All she really wanted was to hold him to her and try to remember the feeling he gave her and the warmth he brought her. She wished the night would never end . . .

The next morning she woke up as the morning light brushed over her face. She smiled sadly as she looked at Ron's sleeping face; she wanted to reach out and brush her hand against his chin. But she didn't want to wake him, for she had other plans for that morning.

She silently got up and went into their bedroom, making sure she didn't step on any creaking floor boards. She walked over to the bed and reached below to grab her suitcases. She didn't want to leave like this but she knew he wouldn't let her go, and it hurt even worse that she was breaking her promise to him, even though from the moment she said it she knew she was going to break it. She walked over to her closet and pulled out her jacket. She knew she had to leave soon before Ron woke and it wouldn't be long. She pulled on the jacket and grabbed the suitcases before she left the room and went into the kitchen to grab a piece of paper and a pen. She sighed before starting the goodbye letter . . .

Dear Ron,

I'm sorry I have to leave like this, but you left me no choice and you have to realize this: I love you and always will, so don't doubt that. I promise I will stay faithful to you. Don't hate me for this - I only did it because I love you, and if you were to get hurt because of me I would never forgive myself. I fully intend on coming back, I just don't know when. Please wait for me and stay faithful. Iif you truly love me don't come looking for me. I love you with all my heart and I tried to show you that before I left. Please, please don't hate me...

With all my heart,

Hermione's tears fell onto her note as she wrote the last few words. After she was done she walked over to Ron, who was still sound asleep on the couch. She left the note on his chest so he would see it when he woke up. As she leant over to leave a peck on his cheek before she left it caught her eye: the letter. There it was, right by her husband’s head. She remembered how he had been reading it. She slowly grabbed it and stuffed it into her pocket, quickly turning around to head for the door.

The time had come for her to leave and the longer she stayed the harder it would become. Somehow she managed to open up the door and step out, but before she closed it and left, without turning back she whispered, "Never stop loving me . . ."
