Chapter 1: Hello
[Printer Friendly Version of This Chapter]

Hello

Harry skirted the outside of the corridor. He was under the invisibility cloak, but even still, he had to be careful. Harry was headed for the Room of Requirement. Ever since February, he haunted the place. Arriving by the tapestry, Harry was surprised to find a door already in place. Opening the door quietly, he slipped inside. Inside the room, there was a grand piano, which was facing away from the door. Hermione was seated at the piano and she was playing a soft haunting tune, then she began to sing.

Playground school bell rings, again
Rain clouds come to play, again
Has no one told you she's not breathing?
Hello I am your mind giving you someone to talk to,
Hello

Harry knew what she was talking about, and his memory flashed back.

Ron and Ginny had disappeared from school grounds two weeks after the holidays. Harry and Hermione had been frantic. Professor McGonagall had sent out as many Order members as she could spare, but their searches had come up fruitless. Then, two days after Valentines Day, a student found their bodies on the edge of the lake. Upon hearing this, Harry had gone to the lake to see for himself. Hermione followed him, knowing that she would be needed to calm him down. After Dumbledore’s death, he never seemed alright, but he always put on a smile and faked his way through each day. Upon arriving down at the lake and seeing Ron and Ginny’s lifeless bodies, Harry broke down. Hermione gently pulled him away, and took him to the Room of Requirement. There, she had held him while he cried, while she herself felt tears pour down her face. While her relationship had been a rocky one, she still loved Ron. After Harry finished crying, he kissed Hermione on the cheek, the left the room without another word. Neither of them spoke of it the next day, sort of like a mutual and silent agreement. They both attended the memorial service in stony silence, sitting in the first row that was reserved for family. Harry kind of let himself go after that. The only person that he ever spoke to, besides teachers, was Hermione.

Harry was jolted out of his thoughts by Hermione’s singing.

If I smile and don't believe,
soon I know I’ll wake from this dream
Don't try to fix me I’m not broken
Hello, I am the lie living for you so you can hide,
Don't cry

Harry cringed and knew that this part of the song was about the fight that they had had last week.

Harry sat in the darkness of the Room, his only light coming from the fire that crackled before him. Watching the flames lick the wood, he slowly nursed his butterbeer. He heard the door open, and didn’t even bother to turn around, because he knew that it was Hermione.

“Harry,” Hermione said. “Professor McGonagall wanted me to check on you; you’ve been in here for hours.”

“You’re point?” Harry asked acidly. He knew that there was no call for his tone of voice, but he didn’t feel like putting up with anyone today, even Hermione.

“Don’t use that tone of voice with me,” Hermione said, stunned and hurt. “I only came up here to check on you because I care about you. You’re living a lie, Harry, and you’ve sucked me into it too. Don’t try to turn it around either, I’m not the one that’s broken, you are. You think that you’re the only that lost some on that day? Do you?” Hermione finished her tirade. Harry looked at her.

“Did you really love him?” Harry asked. Hermione’s jaw dropped. She couldn’t believe that he had just asked her that. Not even bothering to answer, she stormed out of the room.

Harry heard Hermione’s voice again, and listened.

Suddenly I know I’m not sleeping,
Hello, I’m still here, all that’s left of yesterday

Again, Harry’s memory took him back to about two days after his and Hermione’s fight.

Harry found Hermione in the common reading. It was almost eleven at night, but she didn’t seem tired. Harry steeled himself before he opened his mouth.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered. Hermione looked up from her book with tears in her eyes.

“I’m sorry too Harry, but I’m still here, I’m all that’s left of yesterday. I love you so much Harry, I would do anything for you, but I can’t hide you from the world anymore.”

“I love you too,” Harry said. Hermione looked shocked for a minute, she had only meant as a friend, but Harry thought she meant is as more. Not saying anything, Hermione fled up to the dormitory, leaving Harry confused.

Harry came to his senses, noticing the absence of the piano. He looked and saw Hermione staring at him.

“How long have you been there?” she asked, determined not to meet his gaze.

“The whole song,” Harry said honestly.

“I’m sorry I ran out on you in the common room the other day. I was in shock. When I said that I loved you, I only meant as a friend, but then I got thinking. I love you too. I think I’ve always loved you, I’ve just never shown it.” Harry walked toward Hermione. He leaned down until his nose was almost touching hers.

“I’m glad,” Harry said, and then he kissed her soundly on the lips.
