Hey there! I’m Ashlee Winters. I’m in my seventh and final year at Hogwarts School of Witch Craft and Wizardry where I’m in Ravenclaw. Did I also mention I’m in love with none other than Ronald Weasley? Well, I am. I’ve fancied him since third year, and it’s been torture watching him and Hermione Granger day after day. They’re best friends, and the whole school knows they’re totally crazy about each other but just won’t admit it. What’s really hard… even harder than watching Ron and Hermione, is to know that Ron has no idea who I am. So here’s my goal for my final year at Hogwarts: Steal Ron from Hermione. Wish me luck… I think I’ll need it.

“I still don’t understand what you see in him. I went to the Yule Ball with him, and he was so rude to me! I mean for the longest time he was just watching Hermione and Victor Krum together. Seriously Ashlee, you’re wasting your time. Get over him!” Padma Patil, also my best friend, told me for what seemed like the hundredth time as she flipped absentmindedly through a magazine. As if I didn’t know that the two of them went to the Yule Ball together. As if I didn’t know Ron was insanely mad at Hermione because she went with Victor.

“What do I see in Ron? What do I see in Ron!!” I exclaimed rolling over onto my stomach on my giant king sized bed to get a good look at Padma who was at the end of my bed. “Padma! You can’t be serious! Ron is only the most adorable boy in the year. I love his bright red hair, what I wouldn’t give to run my hands through it just once…” I said trailing off just imagining his hair.

“Ash, you’re kind of creeping me out, you know that right?” Padma said.

“Oh! And when he blushes… how he can’t help it and turns bright red when he’s embarrassed. It’s so adorable…” I sighed.

“Ok, Ashlee, listen to me. As your best friend, I’m telling you, give up on Ron! Besides there are so many guys who are interested in you, and they’re much cuter than… Ronald Weasley… you’ve just never noticed them because you’re so hung up over Ron. Now, it’s the last night of summer break, and I don’t want to spend it talking about your weird obsession with Ron.”

“Alright…” I said as if not talking about Ron was the hardest thing ever.

The rest of the night was spent gossiping about all of Hogwarts cutest couples (the topic of Ron was strictly avoided), plans after Hogwarts, and Padma’s secret crush – Terry Boot, but he could never know about her crush seeing as how he’s one of our closest friends. It just so happened that Terry and I went to the Yule Ball together in our fourth year. Padma and I found it … not so amusing that some how we managed to go with each other’s crush. Let’s just say Padma and I weren’t too happy with that arrangement… to say the least.

Padma and I fell asleep around two in the morning when my Aunt Stace came and yelled at us to go to sleep saying we had to be up in about six hours to get the train on time. As if we needed to get up at eight! Please! We’re going to apparate there and that saves about a two hour drive to Kings Cross. Oh well, better wake up when she wants us to. My aunt has way too much stress in her life, and I’m not going to be the one to give her more.

Aunt Stace moved in with me and my little eight year old brother, Charlie, less than three months ago when my mum and dad were murdered by You-Know-Who. My mom and Aunt Stace were sisters and really close, closer than my mum and I were anyways. Mum and Dad were both Aurors and were hardly ever home because they were always fighting and such. I miss them dreadfully; they died right at the beginning of summer so my summer was a bit of a sad and depressing one. Actually, I think tonight is the first time I’ve smiled in awhile. Padma knows how to make me smile and make me feel better no matter what the situation is. Padma’s always been there for me, and I’m sure that this year at Hogwarts it’s not going to be any different.

Chapter 2: All Aboard the Hogwarts Express

Chapter 2 Title: All Aboard the Hogwarts Express

WARNING! EXTREME HALF BLOOD PRINCE SPOILERS IN THIS CHAPTER!

Disclaimer: I don’t own anything you recognize. The only things I own are my other characters and the plot. Everything else belongs the magnificent, J.K. Rowling.

Padma and I got up at eight, much to our displeasure, went downstairs and ate breakfast with Charlie. When Aunt Stace makes a meal, she either goes all out or doesn’t do anything… so it’s either a feast, or take-out. This morning… it was a feast - bacon, eggs, sausage, stacks of pancakes and waffles, French toast, and regular toast. Needless to say, after breakfast was over we were all stuffed silly.

After Padma and I each took turns showering after breakfast we got dressed in our muggle clothes. Now over the summer, I’ve been really depressed, and I needed to find a healthy way to let out some of the depression, so I picked up running. After running pretty much every day of the summer, my body has changed drastically. My thighs were no longer pudgy from my baby fat, but instead slim with some muscles. Over the summer, I noticed the change in my legs and so did Padma. She convinced me to start wearing skirts… short ones at that. She said now that I’ve got the legs I’ve got to show them off, which is what I’ve been doing all summer. I usually never wear skirts… except for our uniform skirts, but other than that I would have rather died than be caught in a skirt… now, I wear them every chance I get!

So now I’m wearing plain white cami and a destroyed denim mini skirt. Padma put on her favorite white peasant skirt with a light pink top. After we got dressed, I had Padma do my hair and make up. Somehow Padma was able to do a quick spell that turned my perfectly straight light brown hair into soft ringlet curls framing my face. After she did my hair, she did my make up. After eyeliner, blush, some eye shadow, and a little bit of clear lip gloss to top it all off. I don’t think I’ve ever worn this much make up in my whole life!

Now all my life I’ve always seen myself as “Plain Jane”. You know – brown hair, brown eyes, regular body, usual height… that’s how I saw myself. I saw myself as normal. I get good grades at school but I’m no where near as talented as Hermione Granger… though I don’t really think anyone can match her intelligence level. I don’t have all the boys fawning after me, although Padma seems to think differently. Now as I looked in the mirror in front of me, I felt something I’ve been striving to feel for a long time, pretty.

“Alright hot stuff, stop staring at yourself in the mirror and grab your trunk! It’s almost time to go!” Padma said bring me back into the present world and out of my thoughts. She and I levitated our trunks and went down stairs to say good bye to Aunt Stace and Charlie.

“Ashlee, why can’t I come see you leave this year?” Charlie asked me.

“Char, I’m sorry sweetie, you can’t come because it’s easier on everyone if Padma and I apparate there. It saves a long trip for you in the car. But don’t worry, you can send me letters, and I’ll reply right away. Bye Charlie, be good for Aunt Stace, alright? Go easy on her; she can only handle so much.” I then pulled my sandy haired brother into a tight hug which he accepted.

“Bye Ashlee,” he said through tears. Why did he have to be so darn cute?

“Bye sweetie.”

I then turned to Aunt Stace as Padma said good bye to Charlie. “Bye Aunt Stace, be safe and let me know if there are any problems with Charlie. If there are, owl me right away, and I’ll help you handle them.” I told her and gave her a hug.

“You know… I thought I was the one in charge… stop acting like the mother. I’m the one who’s supposed to be telling you be safe and if there are any problems owl me… so I guess if there are any problems owl me… and make sure you stay safe missy! Work hard in school and don’t get into too much trouble.” She said as her motherly tone kicked in.

“I’ll be on my best behavior, Aunt Stace.”

Padma and I then held onto our trunks and with a sudden pop, we were gone. Seconds later we were standing in front of the Hogwarts Express. Students and their families saying good bye to each other were all around us. The train was due to leave in ten minutes. I guess it was a good thing Aunt Stace got us up so early.

“Ladies!” A familiar male voice came from behind as an arm wrapped around my shoulders and Padma’s also. We turned and saw none other than Terry Boot. “Looking good this year,” he said as he twirled us both around causing Padma to giggle and blush like mad. It’s so obvious to everyone that she’s crazy about the guy. Well, I guess not everyone, because Terry has no idea. Terry then offered to take our trunks to the train, and then the three of us found an empty compartment together like we do every year.

“Look, I found one!” I exclaimed as we finally came across an empty compartment near the very back of the train. The three of us went in and sat in the way we always sat on the train, Padma and I sat next to each other (Padma by the door, and me by the window) and Terry sitting across from us. Some things never change, our friendship being one of those things.

But at this very moment when I remembered what we always talk about at the very beginning of the train ride. I realized that doing the same thing all the time is not a good thing. We always talk about our summers, not exactly something I want to share. And sure enough, when I looked up, Terry was looking at me with sad eyes.

“I heard what happened, Ash.” He said consolingly. “It was all over the news. How are you handling it?”

That’s exactly what I love about Terry. He’s not like other people. Other people apologize over and over again for my loss. I hate when people do that. I mean you didn’t do anything so stop fucking apologizing! You know what I mean?

“I’m not sure… I’m not happy that’s for sure. But I’m happy school’s starting again so I have a way to distract myself. I mean it wasn’t like they were home a lot… but now knowing that they’re never coming home… that’s hard” I said crossing my arms over my chest while looking out the window in hopes that Padma and Terry wouldn’t see my tearful eyes. When I couldn’t stand the awkward silence anymore I turned back and asked decided to ask Terry how his summer was.

“Not so good either… nothing compared to your summer though, Ash. Though, my mum and dad didn’t want me to come back this year, after Dumbledore’s death and all. I finally convinced them on letting me come back to finish my last year of studies telling them I would most definitely need them after school especially with what’s going on now… with you-know-who and all.” He said so quietly that Padma and I had to lean in to hear him.

“I hate this… I mean our houses aren’t safe and now school isn’t safe for us either! When do you think this is all going to end?” Padma answered in a hushed whisper.

“It’s going to end when Harry Potter defeats him… he is the ‘Chosen One’ right? He was the only one you-know-who couldn’t defeat… don’t you think he’s the only one who can be the one to get rid of him for good?” I whispered back.

“I think Harry’s the ‘Chosen One’ no doubt… but there’s no telling when the battle between them will be, and there’s no telling who’ll win.” Terry replied in the same hushed tone.

“He must be under so much pressure… how would you feel if the weight of the wizarding world was on your shoulders? I would probably go and hide or something… I wouldn’t be able to handle it.” I said.

Padma was just about to add something when our compartment door flung open making all three of us jump several feet. The food trolley had arrived. Padma and Terry got up and started buying treats as I stayed sitting waiting for my heart to stop pounding.

I stood up and joined my friends at the trolley, and while I was standing with them I caught a glimpse of bright red hair… extremely familiar bright red hair.

Chapter 3 Title: I don’t want to break the rules

A/N: I know some of you are probably mad at me for not updating, but I need to remind you that now that school has started, I will not be updating all the time. Plus I have a job so I have no free time… don’t worry, though. I have to quit my job to keep up with school, so there is one less thing for me to worry about. Whoever said junior year in high school is the hardest wasn’t lying. I’ve got so much school work to do that it’s insane! Anyways, thanks for being patient with me, and I hope you enjoy the chapter!
ALSO, I know all of you are waiting to see what happens in this story between Ashlee and Ron, and I assure you, you will find out soon, but right now I need to set everything up.

It was the bright red hair I constantly day dreamed about. The bright red hair I longed to run my hands through. There he was; the boy I thought about all summer, right in front of me. He did look different, but in a good way. I think he grew probably about another inch, but not too much this summer. He looked tanner and more muscular than the last time I saw him. I’m guessing he played Quidditch a lot during the summer.

“Hey, Winters… control the drool. You’re creeping us out,” Terry said loudly bringing me back into the present. Of course while he said it Ron just had to look up, so cliché I know, but he did.

“Hey, Boot, how was your summer?” He asked in his deep voice that made me weak in the knees.

“Pretty good, I guess, yours?” Terry replied as he bought some Bertie Botts Every Flavor Beans from the trolley; after Terry bought his sweets, the lady pushed the trolley away from our compartment leaving the four of us.

“Well, you know the chaos and all made it stressful, but other than that it was good. Harry and I played Quidditch a ton. You know, got to get ready for this year.”

“Brilliant… I didn’t get to play that much this summer, wish I had though. By the way, do you know Padma and Ashlee?” I perked up. I was going to meet Ron! I hope I didn’t look disgusting.

“Yeah I’ve met Padma before,” he said as his ears turned slightly pink as if he was remembering the Yule Ball. “But I don’t think I’ve ever met you… Ashlee is it?” He said as he turned his gaze on me. For the first time he was looking at me, not past me.

I tried to say “yes, I’m Ashlee,” but nothing came out. I tried to say something but it didn’t happen. I had to settle with just nodding my head and smiling.

"I don’t think I’ve ever seen you before, Ashlee, are you –” He started to ask me, but he was cut off by another voice.

“Ronald! There you are. You were gone for so long so Harry told me to come find you. Besides, we should really be patrolling right now. Oh, hello Terry, Padma, Ashlee,” she said all of this quickly. I was trying my hardest not to glare at her. Ron had just been talking to me thirty seconds ago, and she has to come along and ruin our deep conversation. Ok, so maybe it wasn’t a deep conversation, but it was a conversation none the less.

“Wait, how do you know Ashlee?” He said nodding in my direction.

“Ronald, honestly you must be the densest person alive. She’s only been in all of our classes with Ravenclaw since first year. Now come on, we have to patrol,” she said pulling him by the arm away from us. “See you three later,” she said waving goodbye to us over her shoulder.

I sat back down with a mix of emotions. I was thrilled that Ron now knew my name. He had even spoken to me! Of course, that happy feeling was some what deflated a bit at the image of Hermione pulling Ron away from me, the nerve of that girl.

I looked up to see Padma smirking at me, and Terry looking at each of us in turn.

“Oh, don’t even say anything, Padma.” I said rolling my eyes at the look on her face.

“Don’t say anything about what?” Terry asked looking a bit confused.

“Nothing,” I said as I glared at Padma. Incase you hadn’t realized, Terry doesn’t know about my Ron obsession. It would break his heart! According to Padma, when I’m not around he talks about me all the time! But of course this breaks Padma’s heart because she likes him! It’s one insane love… square.

Instead of questioning me farther, he settled for not knowing, which is surprising. The rest of the train ride passed with no other real significance. I did see Ron on my way to the ladies room in the back of the train. He was with Harry, Hermione, and his sister, Ginny. And guess what happened when he saw me walk by! Ok well, I’ll tell you. He waved to me! I think it was the happiest moment of my life. I know, it’s sad, but at least I’m honest and accept it.

So now Padma, Terry, and I are sitting at the Ravenclaw table “watching” the first years get sorted. More like we were trying to find the new teachers, one to replace Snape, and someone to replace McGonagall. No, McGonagall didn’t leave, she’s just been moved up to headmistress. No one’s sure if she’s going to continue teaching Transfiguration or not. As for Snape, well no one’s seen him since before Dumbledore’s death. He’s probably in hiding somewhere with You-Know-Who.

“Look!” Padma said in a hushed whisper pointing towards the end of the professors’ table. There was our Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher from third year, Professor Lupin, in his usual shabby robes.

“Brilliant! Lupin was the best DADA teacher we’ve had! Well, I suppose Moody was good too, but he turned out to be someone else…” Terry said trailing off to give his attention to McGonagall who had stood up to begin the feast no doubt.

“Welcome to our new and returning students. As I am sure most of you know, I have been appointed Headmistress after the passing of Professor Dumbledore at the end of last year. With You-Know-Who and his followers causing so many deaths in not only the wizarding world, but the muggle world as well, there of course are many precautions this year. I will therefore tell you after the feast, so you can at least enjoy that. Enjoy.” As the stiff and rigid professor ended her speech, the food appeared.

“I wonder what new precautions we have this year… they have to be some different ones though, seeing as the precautions last year didn’t stop the Death Eaters from getting in.” Padma wondered as she ate some turkey.

“Who knows what she’s thought of, I have a feeling that this year is going to be very different from our past years… not only with the war coming up, but it’s going to be the strictest yet.” I thought out loud.

And sure enough, I was right. After dinner McGonagall read a long list of restrictions including Aurors at every entrance in place of the dementors, had to walk around the school with at least one other person, not allowed out of common rooms after nine (unless you had a detention or something then your professor had to walk you back), all post searched before leaving and entering the castle, and most importantly, everyone’s least favorite, no more Hogsmeade visits. There was only going to be one and it was right before Christmas.

After this last restriction was stated, the whole hall burst into protests. It took McGonagall almost five minutes to gain control over the hall. “Finally,” she began ignoring the angry looks on everyone’s faces at the news of no Hogsmeade. “I have a new professor to introduce. Well actually he is not new as he has taught here before. I would like you all to welcome Professor Lupin back as your Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher.” Again McGonagall had to pause in her speech, only this time it was because almost all of the Gryffindor table and most of the Ravenclaws and Hufflepuffs had erupted in cheers. As I smiled and clapped along with my fellow classmates, I could see Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Ginny all standing up with a few others whistling and cheering louder than anyone. Just the sight of Ron made my stomach flip. “Yes, welcome back professor. Now, not only will Professor Lupin be teaching Defense Against the Dark Arts this year, he will also be taking my place as Head of the Gryffindor House.” There was even more cheering this time by the Gryffindors as this announcement was made. “Now, with all of the announcements out of the way, you are all dismissed and must head back to your common rooms immediately and get rested up for classes which begin tomorrow.”

Padma, Terry, and I got up together and made our way slowly out of the hall due to the large amount of people trying to leave at the same time. “Ashlee!” I heard from behind me, and I turned to see who was calling my name.

“Ron, oh um, hi” I said flashing him a bright smile trying to make up for my slight stutter.

“Hey, did you enjoy the feast?” he asked as he attempted to make his way out of the hall too.

“Yes, the food is always quite good. Though I’m not too sure I enjoyed hearing about all of those new rules.” I said bitterly. “Even though I am one who follows rules and believes they are all there for a reason, these rules are just a bit too much for me.” I said making him laugh.

“You stick to the rules too? Bloody hell, you aren’t another Hermione are you?” He asked with a goofy grin on his face.

“I try not to think so, but my friends seem to think I am,” I said indicating towards Padma and Terry. It was just then when you realized they were gone… along with just about everyone else “Where did they all go?” I wondered out loud.

“Well, I think they all went to their common rooms…” he said.

“Great, it’s the first day and I’m already going to be breaking a rule,” I said with an exasperated sigh.

“Oh,” he said with his eye brows raised. “And just what rule would that be?”

“The one where you can’t walk around the castle by yourself.” I told him.

“Well, if you are so worried about breaking that rule, I’ll make sure you don’t.” He said with his lips twitching upwards so the faintest trace of a smile was showing.

“And how will you make sure I don’t get in trouble?” I asked him doubting he had come up with any way.

“I escort you,” he said plainly as he took my arm and wrapped it in his as he pulled me out of the empty hall.

Thanks for reading! Please review! I’ll try and update as soon as I can, but there are no promises as to when that will be! <3 ellie

Chapter 4: Gossiping Boys and Girls
[Printer Friendly Version of This Chapter]

Chapter 4 Title: Gossiping Boys and Girls

Disclaimer: I don’t own anything you recognize. The only things I own are my other characters and the plot. Everything else belongs the magnificent, J.K. Rowling.

Yes, so Ronald Weasley was in fact escorting me back to my dormitory. I felt like I was in heaven floating on the clouds with an angel guiding me. Ron was that angel.

“So, Ashlee, how is it possible that we have classes together since first year, and I’ve never met you until today?” He asked me as I led him up a flight of stairs on the way to the Ravenclaw dormitory.

I wanted to tell him it was because he was busy following Hermione Granger around, but I settled for “Well, we don’t exactly have the same friends, so that might have something to do with it.” To be honest, it was kind of difficult to concentrate on words when he was standing so close to me. I could smell his cologne. It had never occurred to me that he might wear cologne… boy he smelt good!

“Well, you’re friends with Terry Boot and Padma Patil, and I know both of them. And Hermione knows who you are. How is it then, that I didn’t know you?”

I couldn’t think of anything to say so I just shrugged. We were walking down the last corridor to my dormitory. At the end of the corridor there was the painting of a queen. In front of the painting was Terry.

“Ashlee! There you are! Padma and I weren’t sure where you went to. Hey, Ron,” he said running towards us. I pulled my hand quickly away from Ron’s out of embarrassment. I don’t think Terry saw.

“Hey Terry,” Ron replied. “Well, I guess I have fulfilled my duty of making sure you didn’t break any of the rules, Ashlee. I guess I’ll see you in classes tomorrow?”

“I suppose so. Thank you Ronald.” I said with a smile. He gave me one of his lopsided smiles that made me weak in the knees then turned and walked away back to his dormitory.

“Password’s ‘wattlebird’” Terry said making the portrait of the queen open. “After you, Miss Winters.” He said gesturing me to go through first.

“Thank you very much, Mr. Boot.”

I walked into the Ravenclaw Common Room and saw that it was pretty much cleared out except for Padma and a few other seventh years. Mandy Brocklehurst, Lisa Turpin, Michael Corner, and Anthony Goldstein were among the other seventh years.

While Michael, Anthony, Mandy, and Lisa sat together talking about the latest gossip on who’s dating who and that sort of thing. Terry and I sat down on the floor in front of the fire with Padma away from the other seventh years. I wanted to tell Padma all about Ron walking me up from the Great Hall and how great progress I was making on winning his attention and affection, but I decided not to say it in front of Terry. I guess I can sort of see what Padma means when she says he likes me. I mean, he was waiting for me outside of the portrait to make sure I was ok. There have been other times too where he was showing how much he liked me, but I guess I never noticed before.

“Ashlee, where did you get to after the feast? You aren’t one to come in late.” Padma asked me once I had sat down next to her.

“I ran into Ron and he and I were talking and then everyone was gone so he walked me back to the common room.” I told her slightly turning my face away from both her and Terry so they wouldn’t see the smile on my face or the blush on my cheeks.

“Well isn’t that something! That was so thoughtful of him.” Padma said. I could tell she was on the verge of laughing at me. I could hear it in her voice. She was mocking me because she knew how much Ron walking me back… or even talking to me meant to me.

I guess Terry was tired of talking about Ron because he turned his attention to Padma and asked, “So who’s going to be your first boy victim of the year?”

It was a joke between Terry and me that Padma’s first boyfriend of the year was her victim. I don’t really know how the joke started, but it’s continued since second year. Padma doesn’t find it funny though.

“I don’t have victims! Stop calling my ex-boyfriends that Terry Boot!” She said bitterly and pushed her long hair behind her shoulder. “And for your information, there is a boy I have in mind, but I don’t think that I’m going to tell you!”

“What do you mean you aren’t going to tell me? Is it one of my closest guy mates? Padma don’t, that would be awkward. And why aren’t you going to tell me?”

“Because it’s a secret, that’s why! Ashlee, I’m going up to the dormitory. I think it’s time for girl talk.”

“Ashlee gets to know, and I don’t?” Terry asked with a mock hurt expression.

“Um, I already know, Terry.” I said laughing.

“Ok, now I’m hurt. So you ladies have decided to keep things between the two of you this year? Is that how it’s going to be?”

“For now,” Padma said pulling me up off the ground.

Terry gave a deep sigh then said, “Thank goodness! I don’t think I’m capable of listening to another year’s worth of you ladies’ girl talks. I’m going up too. Night Ashlee, night Padma,” he said getting up and walking up the stairs to the boys’ dormitories.

Padma and I laughed as we ran up the stairs to our own dormitory and were still laughing when we got into our room. We automatically ran and jumped on our beds like we always do. Mandy and Lisa were our room mates, but they were still down in the Common Room.

“Do you think Terry was being serious when he was thankful that we weren’t telling him about my latest crush?” Padma said turning to face me.

“Honestly, I think we’ve driven him nuts over these past years. But, I think he’ll realize in a bit how much he secretly likes being a part of it. And when you say your ‘latest crush’, you mean your life long crush right?”

“Of course, I’m talking about Terry. I think this year, the way you’re focusing only on Ron, I’m only going to focus on Terry. And truly, I didn’t have any faith in you and your plots of getting Ron Weasley, but it’s only the first night and he walked you to the Common Room? I guess I was wrong. I think you really are going to be able to win Ron and steal him away from Hermione. So tell me what happened with Ron!”

I laughed and began to tell her all about how he took my arm and we talked all the way to the Common Room. I told her how he wanted to know why he and I had never met before.

Mandy and Lisa came in a bit later and the four of us stayed up late talking about silly girly things like hair and makeup. Mandy and Lisa were good friends with Padma and me, but we had never told them about our crushes on Terry and Ron, and we didn’t plan on it either. Mandy and Lisa had really big mouths, probably the biggest mouths of the school. Well, maybe tied with Lavender Brown and Padma’s twin Parvati. Padma and I were always extra careful about what we said to Mandy and Lisa because we knew that if it was something extra juicy, it would be all over the school in a matter of hours. We also knew that we needed to stay on their good side at all times because they were known for ruining people’s reputations.

I tried to listen as Mandy talked on and on about her summer boyfriends, but all I could think about was Ron. Since he had walked so close to me on the way back from the Great Hall, I had a slight scent of his cologne on my robes. Each time I breathed in, I could see him smiling in front of me with his thick red hair. I can not believe that he walked me back! No guy from another house has ever walked me back to my common room. I couldn’t wait until the next day to see Ron and to get one step closer in winning him over.

The next morning I had difficulty pulling Padma out of bed. She loves sleeping in, but I knew she couldn’t today since it was the first day of school.

"Padma, wake up." I said loudly shaking her. Mandy and Lisa had already left and gone down to breakfast. If Padma didn’t wake up really soon, the two of us were going to be very late. And I know for a fact that Terry was waiting downstairs in the Common Room for us like he always does. If I didn’t get Padma up soon, then all three of us were going to be late. Padma mumbled something then pulled the covers over her head. "Padma, we are almost late for breakfast, not that you care or anything. But I know what you would care about! If you don’t get up this instant I'm going to curse you so your robes will say 'I love Terry Boot' for a week!" I said triumphantly.

"You wouldn’t!" She exclaimed pulling herself out from under the covers. She took one glance at my face before groaning and saying, "you would." With that, Padma got out of bed and raced around the dormitory getting ready. I had been awake for over an hour, so I was already dressed. Padma was finally ready and the two of us raced down the stairs into the Common Room and found Terry waiting impatiently for us.

"Bloody hell! That took longer than usual for the two of you to get ready! So Ashlee, how did you get Padma out of bed?"

Oh he knows us so well... well of course I couldn’t tell him how exactly I had gotten her out, but I could give him an idea. "I told her I would curse her so her robes read 'I love someone' for an entire week. And that someone would be her next victim of course."

The three of us walked out of the Common Room and started making our way down to breakfast together. "So you still aren’t going to tell me who this guy is?" Terry asked directing his question to Padma.

"No, not yet. Don’t worry, Terry. You'll figure it out soon enough." She said with a sly smile.

"This bloke isn’t a Slytherin is he? Because if he is, I'll kick his arse!" Terry said in a protective voice that made Padma turn pink.

"Nope, this one isn’t a Slytherin." She said.

"Is it someone new, or is he a past victim?"

"Terry! They are not victims! Stop calling them that! And just so you know, he's a past crush but he and I never dated."

"Really? I didn’t know there were guys that you couldn’t seduce Padma." He said jokingly, but when he saw the warning look on my face he stopped. The three of us then walked into the Great Hall together in silence. I'm not sure how, but we had actually managed to get to breakfast on time. Once in the Great Hall, I couldn’t help but look towards the Gryffindor table to see if Ron was there. He was. Harry was sitting in between him and Hermione. They both seemed rather upset. I secretly found myself hoping they had a fight.

We sat down together at the Ravenclaw table and ate our breakfast together while we waited to receive our schedules for the year. When we got our schedules, I immediately looked to see how many classes Ravenclaw had with Gryffindor. It’s not even something I do on purpose; it has just become a weird habit.

"How many classes this year, Ashlee?" Padma asked me.

"Only two this year: DADA and History of Magic." I said in an unhappy tone. I was hoping for at least three this year.

"Well, we have History of Magic this afternoon, so don’t look so glum." Padma replied as she looked over her schedule.

I nodded; my eyes then traveled from my schedule to the Gryffindor table once again. Ron, Harry, and Hermione were looking over their schedules and they each seemed to be pretty content with them. Just then, Ron's eyes drifted up and met my gaze. I was so embarrassed that he had just caught me staring at him, so I looked quickly away.

"These NEWT classes are so much longer than our regular classes used to be!" Terry stated as he looked at the times for each of the classes. "But we get a break time almost every day!" He exclaimed.

I was a bit surprised; we had never had break times before. I looked down at my schedule and started looking at all the classes I was going to have this year. Before all I was looking at were which classes I was going to have with Gryffindor. "No way! I have a break period all this morning before lunch! That's so brilliant! Then it's History of Magic and Potions in the afternoon! Where do we go for breaks?" I asked Padma and Terry.

"Well it doesn’t say anywhere specific, so I suppose we can go wherever we like, with in reason of course. So I assume the library, the common room, and hopefully even outdoors!" Padma said. "Oh a beak first thing every Monday morning... I could skip breakfast and sleep in until lunch!" She said with an excited voice that made Terry and I both laugh.

"So where should we go for our first break?" Terry asked Padma and me as we made our way out of the Great Hall after breakfast.

"Outside!" Padma and I screamed together. The three of us walked together outside and sat down by the lake under some trees.

"So do you lot have a break this morning too?" A male voice asked us. The three of us turned and saw none other than Harry, Hermione, and Ron.

"Yeah, I suppose the three of you do too?" Padma asked Harry.

He nodded before asking, "Do you mind if we sit down here?"

"Not at all!" I said, the words coming out of my mouth quicker than I had intended them to, my eyes never looking away from Ron. After I said this, he looked at me. This time when he saw that I was looking at him, I didn’t look away in embarrassment. He smiled when he caught my eye and I gladly returned the gesture.

Harry sat down in between Padma and Terry. Ron was just about to sit down next to me when Hermione grabbed his arm and stopped him from sitting. She had seen the smile exchanged between the two of us, and I think she was getting a little bit protective.

"Ronald, I completely forgot that there's something I need to show you in the library." She said not letting go of his arm.

"Mione, can't it wait?" Ron groaned. "I don’t want to go to the library first thing at the beginning of a new term."

"What is it Hermione?" Harry asked in a concerned voice.

"Oh, nothing you need to worry about, Harry. It's just something I need to show Ron. And actually Ronald, it really cannot wait. It's really rather important that you see this." By now Hermione was starting to pull him away from us and towards the castle instead.

"Fine, just stop pulling my arm! That bloody hurts!" he said. He then turned around and said "I guess if I'm not back soon I'll see you at lunch mate," he said to Harry. He then looked at Terry, Padma, and I while saying "History of Magic this afternoon?"

We all nodded and Hermione started pulling Ron away again. He pulled his arm away from hers and sent one last glance at me before leaving with Hermione. After a few steps, Hermione glanced over her shoulder and sent me a triumphant smirk.

"Bitch" I thought angrily to myself as I watched the two of them walk away.

Chapter 6: History of Magic
[Printer Friendly Version of This Chapter]

I was depressed. There really was no other word to describe the way I was feeling at this particular moment. Hermione and Ron didn’t show up for lunch. Not that I had intended to look or anything, but Harry had been sitting with Ginny Weasley and some other Gryffindors and not the other two members of the famous trio. Again, not that I intended to look or anything, but Ron and Hermione were missing from Great Hall for all of lunch. Terry was droning on and on about Quidditch and how he really though Ravenclaw had a chance this year. Of course, all lunch I had let my mind get carried away with what Hermione and Ron were doing and where they were. I honestly hope they weren’t doing anything like what my mind had led me to believe. I was walking out of the Great Hall with Padma and Terry after lunch. Terry was droning on and on about how he thought Ravenclaw had a great shot at the Quidditch Cup this year. All we needed to do was get a decent keeper. I had turned him out once the subject of Quidditch had started; Padma was hanging on to every word he said. Unless we’re talking about Gryffindor Quidditch team, which Ron happened to be on, I could care less about Quidditch. The three of us made our way down the halls of Hogwarts to our least favorite class: History of Magic with Professor Binns. The only upside to this horribly boring class was that Ravenclaws had it with the Gryffindors twice a week this year.

The three of us walked into Binns’ classroom and found it half way full. I automatically searched the room. What can I say, I know I’m obsessed. I saw Harry already sitting down with a seat open to his left and to his right. He looked tired and frustrated. Hermione and Ron weren’t there. This only increased my depression. I should probably get this depression thing checked out. It can’t be healthy to be this depressed over a boy. But, he’s not just a boy. He’s my dream boy… so I guess my unhappiness is slightly justified. No? Ok whatever. To me it is. Terry was still babbling on about Quidditch as he sat directly behind Harry. Padma, still completely absorbed in what he was talking about, immediately sat down on his right. I sighed and grabbed the chair on his left and continued to block out the obnoxious Quidditch chatter which Harry had turned around and joined in. People were continuing to file in as the last few minutes of class ticked by, and yet, he wasn’t there yet.

Class hadn’t started yet, but I pulled out a quill and some parchment anyways. Binns always started droning on and on about some useless facts as soon as the bell rang. As I was digging around in my plain black messenger bag, I heard the door open and the sound of pounding feet. Curious, I looked up and saw Hermione huffing into the room. She slammed into the closest desk to Harry which happened to be the desk on the right. Padma and I exchanged confused glances around Terry. Hermione Granger upset on the first day of classes? Something big must have happened. I checked my watch and saw that the bell was going to ring in about thirty seconds (I’m not a freak; I promise!). Where in Merlin’s name was he? Just as I wondered this, I heard another set of footsteps. I chanced a quick glance to my right and saw him. I immediately felt my depression wash away just at the sight of him. I really do need to get a life.

Ron walked through the class, rolled his eyes at the sight of Hermione, and grabbed the empty chair to the left of Harry. Why yes, this chair happened to be right in front of me. Oh happy day!

Ron turned around in his chair and smiled at me, “Hey, Ashlee.”

All I could do was smile in response because the bell had just rung. Ron turned back around in his chair and muttered something to Harry. Harry shook his head in disapproval but I could tell he was holding back a smile. Hermione was glaring at the two of them.

I had been so fascinated with watching Ron that I hadn’t even noticed that Binns had already started reading off dates and other ridiculous facts that I would never need to know in my life. Terry nudged me in the side. Startled, I turned and looked at him.

“Ashlee, why aren’t you taking notes?” He asked me.

“OH!” I said a bit too loudly as I picked up my quill and started furiously writing. Terry laughed at me then leaned back in his chair and closed his eyes. I’m one of the few that can stand this class. Yes, I think it’s awfully boring and Binns has the most monotone voice ever, but I don’t think I’d ever be able to not take notes in a class. Terry and Padma don’t take notes in History of Magic; they always copy mine after class. Now I know, I shouldn’t let them copy my notes, but whatever. They’re my best friends; I’d do anything for them. Even though I know they rely completely on me for these notes, I think Padma at least can understand why there wouldn’t be many notes to copy today. I was definitely not expecting a note to appear on my desk not even five minutes into class.

Completely startled that the note had interrupted my note taking, I put my quill down and picked it up. I looked over to my right and saw Terry already sleep and Padma doodling on the parchment she should have been taking notes on if she could stay focused. Confused, I looked back down at the note and unfolded it.

Binns is extra boring today, don’t you think?
Ron.

Oh. Merlin. Ronald Weasley has just passed me, Ashlee Winters: the girl that he never gave the time of day to in six years, a note. I think I’ll say it again to myself. Oh. Merlin. I feel completely justified in what I did next. I completely forgot about my notes, Binns, and Terry and Padma counting on me. I scrawled back a quick answer:

Definitely! And that’s saying something.
I can’t concentrate on my notes at all!
Ashlee.

I pulled out my wand from a pocket inside my school robes and quickly tapped the note. It folded itself up and disappeared; I knew that the note had reappeared on Ron’s desk. I fidgeted for a few minutes and tried with all the effort in me to get some sort of information out of Binns to write in my notes, but I seriously could not pay attention to what he was saying. Padma looked over my way more than once and sent me a concerned glance. I just shrugged and continued to fidget. I almost exploded when a note reappeared after what seemed like forever (it had really only been a minute or so). With out hesitating, I quickly unfolded it and smiled in spite of myself at Ron’s messy handwriting.

I think I stopped being able to concentrate on his lectures first year.
I’m impressed that you’re still trying!
How was the rest of morning break? Sorry I got dragged away. Mione’s a nutcase today. I don’t know what’s gotten into her.
Ron.

I grinned. Not only was he impressed with my, but he called Hermione a nutcase!! I wrote my response and didn’t even notice Padma’s shocked face as she watched me.

Don’t be too impressed; I’m failing miserably.
You should have seen Hermione when she came in.
She looked ready to curse someone into obliviation!
Ashlee.

I tapped the note with my wand; it folded itself and disappeared just like the last time. I looked over and caught a glance at Padma’s shocked face. I shrugged and went back to smiling to myself. The rest of class went on in this manner. It was by far the greatest hour and a half of History of Magic I have ever experienced. As Ron and I continued to pass notes, we talked about all sorts of things: having Lupin back at school, the summer that just ended, why he is still so surprised that he and I have never talked before, and Quidditch. Yeah I know… I hate Quidditch and all… but like I said, I only like Quidditch when it has to do with Ron. At one point during the class period, Hermione, being the brain she is, realized what was going on between Ron and I. She tried to scold him over Harry and to tell him to pay attention, but he ignored her. She then turned around and sent me the most horrid glare ever. I seriously thought I was going to die under her penetrating look that clearly said, “Watch it, bitch.” I’m not sure if Hermione’s the type to say bitch, but the look she was giving definitely said it even if she’s never said the word out loud before. Somehow, I’m not even sure how, I managed to put a smirk on my face that I intended to read as “Make me bushy haired, teacher’s pet, obnoxious book worm!” I’m not entirely sure she got all of the adjectives I threw in there. As long as she got the “Make me” part, then I’m good. Hermione narrowed her eyes at me once more, then turned around and went back to her notes.

Suddenly, I heard the bell ring and I jumped up in shock. That was by far the shortest class I’ve ever had with Binns in my life! I saw Padma hit Terry, and he jerked awake.

“What? Class is over already?” He asked in a disoriented voice. I felt the same way.

Ron turned around in his chair and smiled at me. I seriously wanted to melt. I actually started blushing a bit too, I’m sure, since I felt my face heating up. I smiled back and bent down to pick up my bag. I allowed my plain brown hair to cover my face so he wouldn’t be able to see how red it was getting.

“Ronald, hurry up,” I heard Hermione say in a very snippy voice if I do say so myself.

“Hermione, I’m not two. I know where Transfiguration is. I don’t need you to walk with me,” I heard Ron respond. I stood up and was surprised to see Ron standing in front of my desk; obviously Padma and Hermione were as well. Terry and Harry were back to discussing Quidditch.

“Actually, Ronald, if you had been paying any attention during McGonagall’s speech last night you would know that you do need to walk with Harry and I because you’re not allowed to walk by yourself around the castle anymore.” Hermione retorted.

Ron shook his head in disbelief at the disgruntled bushy haired girl. “Alright I’m coming.” He said to her. He turned back to me and said, “That was a fun class; we should definitely do it again next time. You made Binns so much more tolerable.”

“I do what I can,” I said trying to play it cool.

Ron smiled and said “I’ll see you around, Ashlee,” before turning and walking out with his two friends.

Padma walked around Terry and pulled me by the arm. “Come on, Ash, we’re going to be late for Potions.” Padma, Terry and I made our way down to the dungeons. Normally I would be dreading going down into the creepy dungeons, but today I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face.
