The Day The Music Died

A long, long time ago...
I can still remember
How that music used to make me smile.
And I knew if I had my chance
That I could make those people dance
And, maybe, they’d be happy for a while.

As Sirius looks through a photo album of himself, James, Remus, the rat Peter and Lily... he stops at a certain picture and places his fingers on top of it and remembers that wonderful day. How they use to be so happy. Even though that was the night that the music died. Sirius closes his eyes. That was the day that he lost her.

"Oi Padfoot! What are you doing?" Called Remus from behind. Sirius turned around and gave him a firm smile.

"Oh nothing, just looking at these photos from the ball at the Valentines Ball. Do you remember Lily's dress for that?" Sirius asked grinning. Remus leaned over and laughed as he stared at the phote.

"Yeah. She had dressed in a beautiful light pink dress. Fitted her perfectly mind you. James dropped dead when he saw her," Remus chuckled.

So did I, thought Sirius. "Do you want to go through the penseive to go back to that day?" Sirius asked
hesitantly. He decided just then that he would show Remus the thing that happened the day because obviously, it seemed to him that he didn't remember.

"You sure mate?" Remus asked staring at him. "I mean, if your not quite ready to see their faces and
their laughter that's understandable..."

"Sure I'm sure," stated Sirius. "Ready?"

But february made me shiver
With every paper I’d deliver.
Bad news on the doorstep;
I couldn’t take one more step.

It was february at the time, and Lily Evans, James Potter, Sirius Black, Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew sat at the icy footsteps. When Lily shivered, James and Sirius both looked up.

"Need me to wrap my arms around you Lily to keep you warm Lil's?" James asked slyly, "you look cold."

"I'm perfectly fine," Lily snapped, "and it's Lily. Not Lil's. Why can't people just call be by my first name and leave it at that?"

"Because it fun," joined in Sirius. "It's fun picking on you Lily."

"Well it's not fun being picked on," Lily rolled her eyes. "Besides, who would you like it if I called you Siri?"

Sirius paled, "if you did I would have to kill you."

"See?"

"Hey Lily, are you excited about the ball?" James asked. Sirius and Remus exchanged glances. Of course, James was just hinting to Lily that he liked her. Sirius wondered if Lily even knew that James was mad about her.

"Of course," Lily replied, "who isn't?"

"Have a date yet?" James asked, Sirius noticed the hopeful look in his eyes which was just saying, 'please say no, please say no...'

"Yes I do."

"You do?"

"Yes."

"Oh, then nevermind." James looked down at his feet and Sirius glanced over at Lily and placed a finger on his lips. James was dissapointed enough. He could find out that Sirius was going with Lily later. Remus and Peter didn't know either. Sirius had just kept it to himself.

I can’t remember if I cried
When I read about his widowed bride,
But something touched me deep inside
The day the music died.

"So Padfoot, who are you going to the dance with tomorrow?" James asked staring into Sirius's black eyes.

"Er ..."

"Who is it?" James pushed, "c'mon you know you can tell me everything!"

"Ok, how mad would you say if I said it was Lily?" Sirius asked, he closed his eyes. Praying that James wouldn't mind.

"Not to mad."

"Alright, I'm going to the Valentines Day Ball with Lily," Sirius admitted.

"What?!"

"Listen. You've to understand Prongs ... Lily came to me for comfort. She needed comforting, I assume you heard what that fool Diggory did?" Sirius stated.

"Yes, the damn prat. He broke Lily's heart," James said with gritted teeth.

"Exactly, and wel ... I saw her crying outside and so ... we sort of talked you know? And well ... we sort of got together after that. I asked her if she wanted to come with me to the Valnetines Ball with me that night and she said would," Sirius looked down at his hands.

"It's ok," said James. "I'll just ask that Elise girl..."

"Are you really ok with it James?" Sirius asked. "Because if you aren't I'd understand. You've been trying to get together with her for centuries. I feel somewhat guilty."

"Don't be," James stated. "Everythings fine."

"If you say so."

So bye-bye, miss american pie.
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
And them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
Singin’, "this’ll be the day that I die.
"this’ll be the day that I die."

The next day, Sirius was getting himself ready for the ball along with James, Remus and Peter. They all were in their bathroom and was tidying up themselves. Remus got out his comb and combed down his hair that was sticking out. When it didn't go immediately down he just placed his comb under the water and combed it down and grinned triumphantly.

"There!" Remus stated. "Perfect."

"Sirius mate, you look slamming," said Peter. The three boys stared at Peter strangely.

"Slamming? Peter, who on Earth uses 'Slamming' anymore?" James asked.

Peter shrugged, "my parents."

"Exactly."

The boys laughed and went back to getting themselves ready. Finally, Sirius was done and he looked at himself up and down in the mirror.

"Now, I look slamming. Let's go see how the girls look!" Sirius exclaimed.

"Lead the way Sirius," James said laughing.

Once they got into the common room, they all awaited eagerly next to the girls dormitry. Finally, Remus's date was the first to came out. She looked absolutely beautiful. Her usual black hair was straight and pulled into a bun and she was wearing a beautiful emerald green dress. Sirius could tell in Remus's eyes that he absolutely adored her that minute.

"You look wonderful Cassandra," Remus said, he offered her his arm who took it immediately. Then, they awaited for the next one to come out.

That person, was Jennifer who was Peter's date. Merlin, she was usually so quiet and shy. But tonight she looked absolutely dashing! She wore her hair down and her dress was a scarlet blue color. She looked like she had spent a lot of time getting herself ready.

When Peter didn't say anthing, Sirius nudged him hard in the ribs.

"Say something to her you dolt!" Sirius hissed under his breath.

"Y-You l-look b-beautiful Jennifer," Peter admitted.

"Thank you Peter," said Jennifer blushing slightly. Peter offered his arm to her who took it as well.

And then, James date came down and Sirius sighed hardly. He knew he had to be patient for Lily to come but he was becoming anxious! James date, Elise looked wonderful. As always. Sirius could almost laugh, Elise was part of the James Fan Club and was absolutely obsessed with James. Now, her obsession would probably grow.

"Hi Jamesy!" She squealed. She rushed over and took his arm and James almost looked annoyed. Though, Sirius had to admit that Elise looked wonderful that night as well. She wore a white dress and white gloves that matched. Though her hair was a unique. That night, she had it braided.

Finally, came Lily and Sirius's jaw dropped down... literally. She wore a light pink dress, and her beautiful red hair was down and pulled back by combs. Sirius found her breathtaking, and he could tell that James thought so too. She smiled at Sirius.

"You look handsome," Lily told him laughing.

"You look breathtaking."

When Sirius said this she blushed. Sirius wasn't lying, she did really look breathtaking.

Did you write the book of love,
And do you have faith in God above,
If the Bible tells you so?
Do you believe in rock ’n roll,
Can music save your mortal soul,
And can you teach me how to dance real slow?

"Want to dance Sirius?" Lily asked after a while of being in the ball room. Sirius snapped back into reality and nodded.

"Of course."

He offered her his hand and she took it. Her hand was so warm, and it felt so right to have it in his. So right. Once they started dancing, Sirius and Lily took a while to stare into each other's eyes. She had such beautiful eyes. Emerald green they were.

"You're beautiful Lily," Sirius said to her. Lily blushed.

"Thank you."

"No seriosuly, you're probably the most beautiful girl here," continued Sirius.

Lily snorted, "Sirius have you even seen Sarah Lavelle? She looks stunning! I wish I was more like her."

"Really? Because I don't."

Well, I know that you’re in love with him
`cause I saw you dancin’ in the gym.
You both kicked off your shoes.
Man, I dig those rhythm and blues.

Sirius watched as James walked up to Lily and asked her to dance. Before he had done this, he had turned to Sirius and asked him if he could borrow Lily for just a little bit. Sirius had nodded. Not knowing what truly was happening.

He watched them for a while, he watched as Lily's face expression turned from happy to confused. He wondered what James was saying. He wondered why Lily was reacting in such a odd way. He stared at her for some more. She looked ... hurt in a way. She tried to pull out of his hold and she accomplished this.

She rushed towards the exit but found that it was lock. She looked ... trapped. Sirius rushed after her.

"Lily, what's wrong?" He asked.

"Sirius ... did you know that James was in love with me?" Lily asked, her voice full of confusion.

"What?" Sirius asked.

"Did you know that James was in love with me?" Lily repeated.

"No, of course not. I knew that he liked you but I didn't think it was that serious," Sirius admitted. What was going on?

"Sirius, h-he asked me if I would ever let him in my heart," she stared down at her shoes.

"And what did you say?" Sirius asked.

"I said that I didn't know."

"Lily ..."

"Sirius," Lily interupted. "This is my heart we're talking about. Don't you understand? I-I can't do this. I can't have to men like me at the same time. It'd just be complicated."

"Lily what do you truly want?" Sirius asked.

"I want to be with someone who will make me happy. Someone who'll be there for me until the very end. Someone who will love me." Lily stated.

"Then be with James," Sirius said reluctantly, "be with him. He loves you Lily, he truly does. I'm not even sure what my feelings are at the moment. I'm sure his is stronger."

"Sirius ..."

"I mean it. Lily, you will always be my flower. But, now you've got to give James a chance and be his flower," Sirius explained.

"I suppose you're right." Lily sighed. "Where is he?"

"I'm not sure, let's go ask Remus."

I was a lonely teenage broncin’ buck
With a pink carnation and a pickup truck,
But I knew I was out of luck
The day the music died.

That night, Sirius had stayed after everyone had been long gone. One last song played, and he closed his eyes. He had just lost the girl that he admired. The girl that he adored. Now, he was alone. And he almost wondered if he would cry. He knew he wouldn't though, he never cried.

Lily had gone after James, leaving Sirius here alone broken hearted. Lily got what she wanted, but Sirius was left empty handed.

Just then, a song came on and Sirius blinked in surprise. One of his favorites, it wasn't that bad for a muggle song. He began singing to it even though he had a broken heart.

"I started singin’,
"bye-bye, miss american pie."
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
And singin’, "this’ll be the day that I die.
"this’ll be the day that I die."

"'And good old boys drinking whiskey and rye, singing this will be the day that I die.'" Sirius repeated.

"Mr. Black, it's time to go. It's awfully late," Professor McGonagalls voice came from the other side of the Great Hall.

"I understand," stated Sirius. He stood up and began to walk away. His long robes going down to the ground. That was the day that the music died.

Now for ten years we’ve been on our own
And moss grows fat on a rollin’ stone,
But that’s not how it used to be.
When the jester sang for the king and queen,
In a coat he borrowed from james dean
And a voice that came from you and me,

"Do you remember that day now?" Sirius asked after they came out of the penseive. Remus nodded.

"I did remember it before," he admitted. "I just didn't want to mention it."

"It was a terrible day, but my heart healed and I moved on." Sirius stated.

"Did you really?" Remus asked curious.

"Did I really what?" Sirius asked slighly confused.

"Moved on?" Remus continues.

"No," admitted Sirius, "she was far to beautiful. My heart still breaks when I remember that day."

"Sirius, you've got to move on," said Remus. "She's gone now and she wouldn't want you to be heart broken over her."

"I'll try Remus," Sirius says with a smile. "I'll try."

The rest of the song...

Oh, and while the king was looking down,
The jester stole his thorny crown.
The courtroom was adjourned;
No verdict was returned.
And while lennon read a book of marx,
The quartet practiced in the park,
And we sang dirges in the dark
The day the music died.

We were singing,
"bye-bye, miss american pie."
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
And singin’, "this’ll be the day that I die.
"this’ll be the day that I die."

Helter skelter in a summer swelter.
The birds flew off with a fallout shelter,
Eight miles high and falling fast.
It landed foul on the grass.
The players tried for a forward pass,
With the jester on the sidelines in a cast.

Now the half-time air was sweet perfume
While the sergeants played a marching tune.
We all got up to dance,
Oh, but we never got the chance!
`cause the players tried to take the field;
The marching band refused to yield.
Do you recall what was revealed
The day the music died?

We started singing,
"bye-bye, miss american pie."
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
And singin’, "this’ll be the day that I die.
"this’ll be the day that I die."

Oh, and there we were all in one place,
A generation lost in space
With no time left to start again.
So come on: jack be nimble, jack be quick!
Jack flash sat on a candlestick
Cause fire is the devil’s only friend.

Oh, and as I watched him on the stage
My hands were clenched in fists of rage.
No angel born in hell
Could break that satan’s spell.
And as the flames climbed high into the night
To light the sacrificial rite,
I saw satan laughing with delight
The day the music died

He was singing,
"bye-bye, miss american pie."
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
And singin’, "this’ll be the day that I die.
"this’ll be the day that I die."

I met a girl who sang the blues
And I asked her for some happy news,
But she just smiled and turned away.
I went down to the sacred store
Where I’d heard the music years before,
But the man there said the music wouldn’t play.

And in the streets: the children screamed,
The lovers cried, and the poets dreamed.
But not a word was spoken;
The church bells all were broken.
And the three men I admire most:
The father, son, and the holy ghost,
They caught the last train for the coast
The day the music died.

And they were singing,
"bye-bye, miss american pie."
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
And them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
Singin’, "this’ll be the day that I die.
"this’ll be the day that I die."

They were singing,
"bye-bye, miss american pie."
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
Singin’, "this’ll be the day that I die."
