PART 1 of 2 [trust won't see this one coming]

Chapter 13: Reminding

“So he was like, ‘Will you go to the ball with me?’ and I was like, ‘Oh. My. Gosh. Are you serious?’ and he was like, ‘Yeah,’ and I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes!’ and he was like, ‘Great!’ and I was like, ‘Ahhh!’ and so…” Katie kept going on and on about how George had asked her to the Yule Ball. Katie liked George a lot. Seriously, a lot. She'd had a crush on him since she was a first year. I was pretending to listen as I searched through the dresses they had at Hogsmeade.

“Oh. My. Gosh,” she said when she saw a dress. She squealed and jumped up and down. “This is it, Emma, this is it!” She ran to the dressing room and tried on a purple knee high dress that flared out at the bottom.

“It looks really great on you,” I said when she walked out.

“You really think so?” she asked, excited.

“Oh, yeah, Katie, it’s perfect for you!” I assured her. She shrugged.

“Ok,” she said, doing a really bad job of hiding a smile. I could tell she really liked it. “It’s just I want to have the perfect dress for George.” Well, that was understandable.

“Oh my gosh, you’ll never guess who asked Angelina to the Yule Ball!” she said.

“Who?” I asked completely uninterested. I picked up a zebra strapless mini dress and went to try it on.

“Fred Weasley!” she gushed. She was almost as excited as she was about George asking her. I, on the other hand, were completely shocked, even though I had no reason to be.

“What?!” I said a little too soon.

“Well, wait, you would have known right? Fred’s your best friend. He told you, didn’t he?” she questioned in a confused tone.

“No, he forgot to mention that,” I said, matter-of-factly.

“Oh,” she said.

“So,” I said, from inside the dressing room. “When did this all happen?” I had a nasty tone behind that one.

“This morning at breakfast,” Katie said. “It was so cute! He just came up and asked her when she was about to leave.” That actually didn’t sound too fancy but Katie thought that any guy that asked a girl on a date, no matter how unoriginal it was, was the cutest thing in the world.

“Sure sounds cute,” I said walking out.

“OH MY GOSH! YOU HAVE TO GET THAT!!! YOU LOOK SO FREAKING SEXY!!!” Katie said, her mouth dropping.

“I don’t know,” I said, considering another dress that had caught my eye.

“No, get that one, Emmie, it’s amazing on you!” she tried to convince me.

“Maybe,” I said. I went back in the dressing room and took it off. “So…what did Ange say?”

“Yes, of course!” Katie said it like it was obvious. “How could she say no? It was so sweet. He took her arm and took her aside, got down on one knee and asked her.” Now that did sound cute. And a little too close to a proposal. But still, I never knew that Fred had a thing for Angelina. I actually thought he had a thing for…well, it didn’t matter because I was apparently wrong.

“Oh. Well, how sweet of him,” I said coldly. I hadn’t meant to sound harsh, but I did. I walked out and got the other dress and went to try it on.

“Yeah, really…” Katie said noticing my tone. “But you’re going with Oliver, right?”

“Of course,” I said nicely. She could tell it was phony.

“Emma, are you ok?” she asked.

“Never been better,” I said, walking out. Katie’s mouth dropped longer than the first time.

“Oh. My. Gosh,” she said. “Em, you look stunning!”

“Thanks,” I said. I really liked the dress. It was very, very pretty. It was a beaded gold mermaid halter dress with tulle at the bottom quarter. The entire upper three-quarters of it was gold beads and the back was open so that it barely covered your butt. It literally was perfect and you fell in love with it immediately.

“I lied. You’re buying that one.” Katie demanded. “It matches both you and Oliver’s skin tones perfectly! And all the boys are gonna be so jealous!”

“Uh-huh,” I said, uninterested. My mind kept thinking of Angelina and Fred. How could that have happened? Fred liked Ange? That didn’t make sense.

“Sorry, Katie, what did you say?” I asked, coming back from my thoughts.

“We need to get back,” she informed. “Oliver won’t be happy if we’re late for practice. Well, he won’t be happy with me.” She winked and laughed. I paid for the dress and waited outside for Katie. For some reason my heart was sore now. Sore, and it felt like it was beating out of my chest. I had no idea why, but I couldn’t keep my mind off Fred.

‘I love Oliver,’ I kept telling myself. After a while it almost sounded like I was reminding myself that I did.

“Ready to go?” Katie asked when she came out, dress in hand.

“Yeah,” I said getting up from where I was sitting. I walked back pretending to listen to Katie when really I was listening to myself.

‘I love Oliver,’ I told myself. ‘I love Oliver.’
