Chapter 17:Breaking Up

Harry woke to someone kissing lightly on his lips. He looked down and saw Hermione smiling up at him. It took Harry a while to notice that he had fallen asleep with Hermione in his arms.

“Hermione!” Harry jumped up from the couch. “I’m really sorry about last night, you were all sad and upset and oh, I know you’re going to really hate me, but please, please forgive I didn’t mean any of it…”

“You didn’t?” Hermione asked with an upset tone.

“No, no, no! Course I meant it but I know-“

“Okay, you don’t need to go on about it again. But I really don’t hate you for anything, I can never hate you.” Harry relaxed. “Come sit down,” Hermione patted the spot next to her and Harry fell into the seat.

“What are you going to do Hermione?”

“Do what? Oh! Um, I don’t know. I really don’t know,” Hermione sighed.

“Come one, let’s go get some breakfast first,” Harry suggested.

“Good idea. I can never think with an empty stomach!”

Harry and Hermione walked into the Great Hall, holding hands. Hermione looked towards the Slytherin table immediately. She expected him to be sitting with Zabini and all the other people again, but she was surprised that he was sitting well away from Zabini. Several people spluttered and stared. It was not as bad as when Draco and Hermione first showed public affection, but this was just as bad.

“I thought they were friends ?”

“I thought she was dating Draco Malfoy.”

“Well it was a matter of time he dumped her. Don’t even know what he saw in the first place.”

“Do you really think so, well if she lost her chance, maybe I can give it a go?”

People were muttering things about them and Draco and what was more, the girls seemed to be not care whether Hermione heard what they were saying about pursuing after Draco or no. Ever since the final battle, Draco had become famous within the female population. He had everything. Looks, money and in the case of the war, the bravery to stand up to the Dark Lord.

Harry and Hermione joined Ron at the Gryffindor table, who was also goggling at them, but in a happy-for-them way.

“Finally! It was a matter of time you asked Hermione out mate,” he said slapping Harry across the back.

“Ouch! Yeah I guess…” Harry didn’t want to go on about his affections for Hermione.

“What do you mean it was a matter of time before Harry asked me out?” Hermione asked, eyeing them suspiciously.

"What! You didn't tell her your crush?!" Ron asked wildly, looking form Harry to Hermione then back to Harry.

“No…” Harry mumbled.

“Oh my gosh! Harry…” Hermione pulled Harry into a hug, causing several people to wolf-whistle.

When they broke apart, they were both red in the face, and Ron was smirking broadly.

“So, what did happen?” he asked.

“Well, I was crying and not really myself-“

“Crying? Why were you crying Hermione?” Ron asked.

“Um, erm, cause um, well I kind of heard Dr-Malfoy’s chat with Zabini and well,” Hermione’s voice cracked. “Well, he was lying to me all along,” she finished trying to make herself sound like she didn’t even care. “It was all a trick.”

“HE DID WHAT!” Ron roared. Several people looked their way in alarm. A few first years sitting close by scuttled to the other end of the table. “I’ll show that bastard. I’ll show him for lying to my best friend.”

Ron stood up, rolling up his sleeves.

“Ron, please, calm down,” Hermione pleaded quietly, slapping herself mentally for telling Ron at breakfast time.

“Mate, come on sit down. We can deal with the ferret later.”

Finally, Ron calmed down and sat back down again.

“What are you going to do?”

“I don’t know. Just make him jealous and show him that I don’t care about him one bit I guess,” Hermione sighed. “Other than that, I don’t know. I really don’t know.”

“Hermione? Can I have a word?”

Without even turning around, Hermione knew who this was. Just hearing the voice made her heart split in a thousand tiny pieces.

“I don’t have anything to talk to you about Malfoy.”

“Malfoy? Since when have we been back in last name terms?”

“Since the minute you decided to admit that you were using her as a bet. Now piss off Malfoy,” Harry said angrily.

“Bet? What are you talking about Potter?”

Hermione lost it.

Finishing the last syllable, Hermione ran out of the Great Hall, tears pouring down her face. Harry immediately hurried after her.

Draco was stunned. Obviously Hermione had heard what he said to Blaise yesterday. Goddammit, she didn’t finish listening and now she was angry with him. Bloody hell. Draco was so deep in thought he didn’t notice a fist coming closer and closer before making contact with his cheek. Draco heard a crack.

“Bloody hell! What was that for Weasley?”

“For playing around with Hermione’s feelings. You never how much she loved you did you? She was probably already planning on telling you her feelings, but you, you bloody ferret just hurts her feelings just like that. I’m warning you Malfoy, if you ever touch her, or even attempt to touch her, you’ll have me to go through.”

Casting a disgusted look at Draco, he also walked out the hall.

Draco did not move from the floor. He was too stunned at what he had heard. Hermione loved him. He always knew she had deep feelings for him, but never in his dreams did he even dare think that she loved him. Just as how he had done for her……

Hermione sat at the foot of the stairs, crying. It pained every part of her body to break up with Draco, but she had to. She couldn’t let him use her as a puppet anymore, no. Never.

It was Harry.

“Harry! Oh, Harry, I’m such a weak person aren’t I?”

“No Hermione. Quite the contrary. You’re too tough, if you’re really hurt, it’s normal to cry. I know how much you loved that ferret.”
Hermione broke down again.

Harry held Hermione in his arms, trying his best to calm her down when some footsteps could be heard. Ron turned the corner and saw the couple sitting at the steps.

“Hermione, it’s fine. I bashed that git up.”

“What! Ron! Why on earth will you do that?”

“Well, I didn’t exactly bash him up, I just punched him and gave him a warning.” When Hermione did nothing but stare at him in alarm, he added, “well, it serves that git right.” He said shrugging.

“I guess you’re right,” Hermione sighed, leaving an awkward silence between the trio.

“So!” Harry burst out suddenly, causing Hermione and Ron to jump. “Erm, sorry. So, what’s the plan?”

“Plan? What plan?” Ron asked turning from Harry to Hermione then back to Harry then his gaze returned to Hermione again. Hermione simply gave him a just as bewildered look and turned to Harry.

“You know, to get back at Malfoy,” Harry said as if obvious.

“First off, there was no plan, and secondly, I don’t want to get back at him-“

“But Hermione,” Ron whined. “I think he deserves something more than just yelling and punching. He deserves something much more than that.”

“Ron, you didn’t let me finish. I meant to say before I was rudely interrupted by a certain rude person, I don’t want to get back at him as if I actually want to, I want to do it unintentionally,” Hermione said smirking. “And you’re going to play the main role in this Harry.”

“Yes madam!”

The next few days for Draco was unbearable. He always seemed to walk on to Hermione and Potter showing public affection. Such as this morning, as he was walking to Charms, he saw Hermione and Potter snogging the lives out of each other, and didn’t even notice him walking past them quickly. No, this is it, I’m just going to go and talk to Hermione. But that didn’t work.

“Erm, Hermione, can I talk to you?”

“Harry, do you hear someone talking?”

“No, all I can see is a ferret who plays with girls’ feelings. And is a complete idiot,” Potter replied.

Draco felt his blood boil. So he was a ferret that played with girls’ feelings and was a complete idiot was he? Feeling too angry to retort, Draco stormed off. Hermione and Potter were laughing behind him.

“Draco,” crooned an annoyingly sickly voice came from around the corner. Draco closed his eyes before he really did actually explode.

“Yes Pansy?” he said as calmly as possible and putting a fake smile as he turned around to her ugly face.

“I was wondering that now that the Mudblood is out of the way-“

“JUST SHUT THE HELL UP PARKINSON!” Draco roared, losing his

Pansy blinked. “Am I Parkinson now?”

“Yes you are, and you will always be. And never call Hermione Mudblood again, or you’ll have me to talk to. Is that understood?” Draco said in a dangerous voice.

Pansy seemed to shrink and quickly walked away. Draco slumped onto the floor. He was devastated with his and Hermione’s break up. He wished Potter would disappear so he and Hermione could go out again. No, Potter doesn’t need to disappear, he would get Hermione’s heart back himself, with no help. He had to.
