Shadow kisses in dark Hogwarts hallways, flames of passion, silver eyes and smooth, pale skin… smiles and secrets… why was the past so hard to let go of? A lost passion between Hermione and Draco reblossoms on none other than her wedding day... to Ron.

Chapter 1: Too Late

This time

Sunlight seeping in through the window... bouncing off the polished wooden floor… Hermione smiled and closed her eyes slowly, revelling in the memories.
She was meant to be preparing herself for the wedding, but she was a fast worker. Her hair was done up, her makeup applied, not a crease in her dress…
And she knew this was her last chance to really be alone and think in silence about herself… and Draco…

Shadow kisses in dark Hogwarts hallways, flames of passion, silver eyes and smooth, pale skin… smiles and secrets… why was the past so hard to let go of?

Hermione walked over to the huge vanity mirror in the corner and looked at herself. Her eyes seemed huge in a face that was pale and nervous. She was marrying Ron. She had to get a grip on herself.

Crack! The loud sound interrupted her thoughts, and she shook her head, annoyed.

This place

“Hermione.” The sound of his voice made her arms tingle with goose bumps, and she turned around slowly, her white gown sweeping the floor with a “swishing” sound.

“Draco…” The sight of his pale skin, his shadowy grey eyes, was hard to resist. She could hardly believe he was here, in person, and not just another dream.

He was close, close enough to touch, and before she could help herself she reached and brushed her fingers across his lips – just to know he was real.

His lips were soft and warm against her fingers. She took a deep breath and could feel the tears stinging her eyes. The sight of him was bringing back old memories.

“Hermione…” He breathed in deeply. “Look… I just wanted to come and say congratulations to you on your wedding day.”

A tiny bubble of anger rose within Hermione. So, this was what the visit was for. Revenge. Rubbing it in…“Don’t make this any harder for me than it already is.”

“It’s so hard for you, is it?” His voice was suddenly bitter. It seemed that anger was lurking in Draco’s mind too, just under the surface.

Too long

“And why? You were the one who gave up, Hermione! You were the one who quit! It could have been me who was…” his voice trailed off. He had already said too much.

“Will you ever understand? It wasn’t about us. It was about my friends. How long can you lie to the people you’ve trusted all your life?”

“So now you’re deciding to lie to yourself, and to me? Talk about twisted logic.”

Too late

“Can you please stop doing this, Draco? I’m marrying Ron in a bloody hour!” Thick silence followed Hermione’s words. She could feel Draco’s gaze bearing into her, and she looked down, refusing to meet his eyes.

Who was I to make you wait?

“I just… wanted to know… but I guess…” Draco’s words trailed off. “I’ll be going now…” He turned slowly, about to Apparate away, but she reached out a hand to grab his wrist.

Everything stood still for a moment, as Draco looked at her, confused, his hand in hers.
“You don’t want this,” he said, pulling his hand from hers.

Just one chance

“I do… I want you…” Hermione whispered. She could see desire flickering in his eyes, so she quickly continued. “But I can’t. I’m marrying Ron.”

“You don’t have to marry him!” He blasted, his eyes now flashing and his voice searing in his anger. “Look how easy it is! All we have to do is Apparate somewhere far away, and no one would ever find us!”

Just one breath…

“But I can’t…”

“You can’t?”

“I don’t want to deceive anyone anymore, Draco. I don’t want them to be hurt.”

Just in case there’s just one left…

“You’re hurting me, Hermione.” Her eyes burned with tears at the sound of his broken words, and she turned away.

“I’m sorry, Draco,” she whispered, wiping away the tears, but he had already realised she was crying.

But you know, you know, you know…

The feel of his hands on her shoulders as he turned her around to face him was comforting as well as familiar. Staring into her eyes the whole time, he held her face in his hands and wiped away the tears with his thumbs.

I love you, I loved you all along

Slowly, hesitatingly, she reached her arms out and wrapped them around his waist, and buried her head in his chest, inhaling his spicy scent.
“I love you,” she said, her voice muffled. She heard Draco inhale sharply, and then sigh.

“You’re marrying Ron,” he whispered. “And he loves you. We can’t… you can’t… Why did we even have to get into this mess in the first place?”

I miss you… you’re far away for far too long

Draco sighed again and held her closer to him. He could imagine another time, not very far from now, when she wouldn’t be his anymore. When he could no longer see her, or feel her smooth skin, her bushy hair…

“Draco… I…” She smiled through her tears and lifted her face up for a kiss.

Slowly, their lips met, and she felt a jolt of electricity in her, a flame of old passion once again ignited. He brushed his tongue against her lips, begging for entrance, and she obliged, letting him in. He tasted salty, of tears, and the tears on her face mingled with his, until they were both crying and holding on to each other.

I keep dreaming, you’ll be with me and you’ll never go

The kiss was passionate, but also sad… and as Draco drew back, tears still streaming down his face, it left behind the taste of goodbye.

“Hermione… I wish…”

“I do too. I’ll always remember. I’ll never forget.”

And then she was sobbing again, her arms around him, holding him closer to her. She didn’t want to let go.

But she had to.

Slowly, he disengaged her arms from around him and stepped back, a ghost of a smile across his face. “I love you, Hermione.”

And with a crack, he was gone from her life.

Stop breathing, if I don’t see you anymore…

How would you feel if something that was part of you was taken away – perhaps forever? Hermione, however, couldn’t let emotion override her. She was about to get married.

Shakily, she drew her wand and tapped her mussed hair and crinkled dress with it, fixing it. She could still feel a shadow of his touch on her, and her lips tingled from his kiss.

She redid her smudged makeup in front of the huge vanity mirror in the corner, at times looking at the window and wondering if he was watching.

Wondering if she would ever see him again.

With you, I’d withstand, all of hell to hold your hand…

When Ginny Weasley bounced into the room fifteen minutes later, her red hair flying behind her, she found Hermione sitting by the window in quiet contemplation.

Hermione looked up, and Ginny was surprised to see the quiet blaze in her eyes… a look of love combined with calm determination.

“I’m ready.”

Ginny looked at the older girl in admiration as she stood up with a sort of feline grace, and wondered where this new found… strength… had come from. Ron was so lucky to be marrying a girl who loved him so much.

After fussing over Hermione’s hair and repining her dress, Ginny was finally satisfied. Hermione looked stunning. Her eyes were shining, her lips red and her dress floated behind her like clouds. Her normally bushy hair was pinned up sleek and shiny.

I’d give it all, I’d give for us…

Hermione’s thoughts ran around in her head in circles, but they all came back to one thing – she was marrying Ron, and she was in love with Draco.
She would give anything, anything, to be with him again… but she couldn’t.

In her hands she clutched a bouquet of roses. She wanted to fling them out the window.

Ginny must have seen some shadow of doubt cross across her face. “You look perfect,” she reassured Hermione as she led her out the door, and Hermione’s lips curved into a small smile.

I’ll give anything but I won’t give up

She walked slowly up the aisle. For a moment, the whole world spun out of focus, and it was just her there, no one else. For a moment, her vision blurred, and it wasn’t Ron standing there, waiting to receive her – it was Draco. His lips curved in his trademark smirk.

Because you know, you know, you know…

“Draco?” she whispered to herself quietly, so that no one could hear. But he was gone, and it was Ron there again, grinning widely, his ears slightly pink.

I love you, I loved you all along

They were almost at the altar now. Her father placed his hand on her shoulder, and, smiling and crying at the same time, kissed her forehead and whispered one word – “Go.”

She took the final steps alone, to Ron and a new life. But it had been more than an old life she had left behind.

I miss you… you’re far away for far too long…

As the priest began to speak, however, she couldn’t help glancing at the doorway of the church. Her eyes were quick to spot him – grey eyes, pale skin, ice-blond hair…

I keep dreaming, you’ll be with me and you’ll never go…

Draco raised his eyebrows at her, and she smile in response. He shook his head at her and leaned back against the doorway.

She glanced back at Ron and saw blue eyes brimming with love and happiness. She wasn’t prepared to take that away from him. But how she wished it could have been different. That it could have been Draco standing before her and not Ron…

Stop breathing, if I don’t see you anymore…

She glanced back at the doorway, but he was gone.

Slowly, she felt something go out of her, felt something in her deflate a little. Would she ever see him again? She bit her lip, remember their last kiss. She wasn’t sure she could bear touching Ron.

She took a deep breath and turned back again to face Ron. She would move on… and although she would never stop loving him, she would still know that he was somewhere at there in the world…

But he won’t be mine, she realised as she murmured her vows. And I won’t be his.

It didn’t matter anyway.

It was too late.

A/n: Please excuse my first ever fanfiction if it isn’t to standard! *hands out cookies for enduring the whole story* I absolutely love Dramione which is why I picked it for this story. I’m thinking about writing a chaptered sequel, but that’s for later.
However, what I really appreciate is feedback, so leave reviews please!
By the way, I used the lyrics of the song “Far Away” by Nickelback – but they aren’t my lyrics (duh) they belong to Nickelback. That’s cool.
